Edward Scissorhands is simply one of the most beautiful movies ever created. I think I speak for everyone else when I say that Johnny was the perfect choice for the role. No one would have been able to portray the innocence and love the way he did. Johnny is an absolute genius and I think he deserves more recognition. Even though he is one of the best actors in the world (in my opinion he is the best) I still think he is very underrated.
"Edward Scissorhands" is a vastly underrated movie, with a great message about accepting someone who's different beyond their own control. There's so much to like about it, though I don't care for the seduction scene.
It's one of those off beat films that is criminally underrated at the time but goes down as a classic, thats everyone has to watch. JD and TB are those kind of films neither one has really been one for the blockbusters really.
His eyes are so kind, so gentle, and so curious as Edward. But really most of it comes from Johnny and his true nature. It's accentuated in Edward Scissorhands using makeup and prosthetics in a way that highlights his eyes in comparison to the rest of his face. But his eyes and his gaze are authentic. Such a sweet man. My sister and I discovered it randomly, and though I can't remember how, I do remember it's impact. It was the first occasion of experiencing intense empathy for a character to that degree. It was enough to be thoroughly charmed by Edward to the point that we both wished there was a way for us to hug him. And then being sad that hugging Edward was impossible. We were young girls just old enough to understand we were many years late for that oppertumiy. The ending DEVASTATED us. And I mean, we are both adults now and it still kinda does. It's objectively upsetting.
I think personally since it originally Tom cruise was gonna be the first choice tim Burton had for Tom,but unfortunately whatever the reason t cruise turned that role down 👇
Caroline Thompson wrote the screenplay for Scissorhands. She revealed how the hive mindset of women can turn against someone they used then abused and discarded. The women of the town, treated Edward like a sex object, a tool to be used for their homes, a stylist for their hair and their dogs, and when one woman tries to take advantage of him she lies to protect her own reputation by destroying Edwards with lies and manipulation. The women began to turn against Edward like a leper. Kim was distrusting of Edward because of his appearance and how shy he was, though she slowly began to see he was an innocent person not like the common people and not as cruel and self serving as her boyfriend Jim. The Mother was very kind to Edward and sadly knew society would continue to use him and be cruel to him and thought it best he went home to his castle. The film is so simple and beautiful allowing scenes to breathe with length allowing music to carry the emotion of each scenes expression. Very beautiful film about being different and the narcissism of human nature.
I'm a person who hardly ever cries, for personal reasons too. I don't get emotional with films, but I swear, Tim's movies do it for me. I get emotional when I watch them, specially Edward scissorhands and Alice in wonderland/Alice through the looking glass I also LOVE his remake of willy wonka and the chocolate factory, those movies just do something to me, I can relate so much to the characters, the stories...they are literally everything. Tim is brilliant, Johnny is brilliant, everyone who worked for those movies is brilliant. I can finally feel like I have a functioning heart when I watch them
Agreed. I just rewatched this movie the other day and I very rarely cry because I’m devoted to moving forward at all costs, but the “hold me/I can’t” scene punched me right in the tear ducts.
@@metrognome2225 Exactly. Also, in general, we rarely see characters as pure and gentle as Edward in movies, and the fact that everyone misunderstood such a gentle soul, and thought he was bad, really resonates with me (I get judged and misunderstood a lot just because of the way I dress or express myself, but I wouldn't hurt a fly). It's really a wonderful movie, but I think introverts are the ones who really appreciate it the most
Love the brilliant relationship with Tim & Johnny ❤️ their magic together when they do a movie is just something exquisite every time..love all their movies they do together ❤
16:26 This story makes me think of all of the times test audiences like these ruined movies with comments like these. Thankfully they didn’t for this movie.
No matter how many times I watch Edward Scissorhands, the scene @ 14:20 where Price's character dies, will forever give me cold chills. The man was pure acting genius.
One of my all time favorites but I could never finish it without crying my eyes out so I had to stop it halfway, the ending leaves a bittersweet uncomfortable and unsatisfying feeling I had to keep telling myself it's not real
17:19 is what turned me off to the movie for so long. I was absolutely terrified of him as a kid. But watching it now I was sobbing it's such a beautiful film. But I see how hard it was to market
It's funny how Caroline Thompson sort of resembles Winona Ryder. Like she could play her older sister. They ought to have done a photoshoot of Tim Burton dressed as Edward and her as Kim/Winona.
There's such a beautiful moral behind this story ...and everyone who watches it cries. You want to watch it over and over (even as an adult) anyone who doesn't get it's touching beautiful message is pretty shallow.. I'm a southern California boy. But never would I speak in such an ignorant tongue. Everyone gets so frustrated at the young girls ignorant boyfriend.for wanting to hurt Edward scissorhands. But not just him the whole town starts to misunderstand him and use him. And turn on him because of their own ugliness!. Now how could anybody not see that. Johnny play such a lovable loyal innocent character. . The last thing I'll say is... to think that there is people in the world that think like that." Oh the mean boyfriend had a right to want to kill that fat guy etc." There is people like that who exist in the world. The funny thing is, those are the people that Tim Burton was writing about in his movie. The one the main character feels out of touch with , but is so much beautifully different. That's why the girl falls in love with him.The misunderstood lovable character runs into the hateful world. It's just too bad that the hateful world is actually our reality. We need more characters like Edward scissorhands in real life.
If that drawing really is the original one Tim Burton himself made in highschool then Johnny was really born for the role of Edward because i swear i can see Johnny's face on that drawing.

His range is unmatched I think he is the best actor as well his performances simply can not be done by others.
Maybe Willem Dafoe in fetal form could pull it off
It's movies like these that make me want Johnny Depp to get into the world of anime.
He's not underrated. But I don't think he cares about that, he loves music, not acting.
Edward scissorhands is my favorite movie, I love this movie so much it really hits me I cry everytime I watch it

Tim Burton's mom straight up roasts him at the beginning hahaha

uggh thank god Tom Cruise didnt do. Johnny was ideal for this film.
True!
Right! I literally scoffed out loud at the mention of his name. Lol.
No one thought he could play Lestat either... but he did it perfectly.
Right?! I think RDJ would've done a decent job tho, but yeah Johnny was the right casting

Ahhh was such a good film. Really hoping it doesn’t get a remake tho I love it as it is

100 percent
Burton really do know how to make everything in the backstories of his child hood and then bringing to life on camera it’s stunning!
Honestly the casting of Johnny in that role was probably one of the best pieces of casting I'm Cinema history, he was perfect for that.
I enjoyed this almost as much as the movie itself! It's just so fascinating to have an insight to how they created it. So cool!
So good
