Funny enough, Disney fired him for "wasting resources" (when he directed the original Frankenweenie short). One clue as to the kind of producer Tim Burton was on this movie is the temperaments of the people who worked underneath him. At 2:49, Henry Selick seems pleased to be directing the movie. But at 3:33, you can kind of tell that Danny Elfman is pissed off about the fact that the movie started production without a script. Elfman has since admitted that he and Burton had a major falling-out on this movie. Elfman was frustrated that this movie (as well as "Batman Returns") consumed two years of his life, and I think he was also annoyed that Burton could never make up his mind on things. That's why Burton replaced Elfman with Howard Shore on "Ed Wood", although he and Elfman later reconciled on "Mars Attacks!". They have since mutually agreed never to speak again about the bad experience they had working together on Nightmare Before Christmas.
It’s 2018 aka the 25th anniversary of this movie. For Halloween I was jack Skellington because I’m so obsessed with this movie! I swear this is one of the best movies ever because they put so much Time in effort into this movie that it is actually insane. This will always and forever be my favourite movie

"The Nightmare Before Christmas brings to the screen dazzling stop-motion imagery." *Shows scene of Oogie being revealed as a disgusting mass of wriggling bugs* Yes, simply dazzling.

30 years old and as timeless as ever It's from the mind of Tim Burton but director Henry Selick is the one to thank for this gem of a holiday flick despite it being only 76 minutes long Jack Skellington embodies a preoccupation common in Burton's work over the years; the terrifying notion of being misunderstood That's something a lot of us can relate to indeed, at times we can be carried away with something new going way overboard with enthusiasm Halloween is special but we're reminded too why Christmas is just as beloved This works immensely thanks to its original storytelling, stellar animation, excellent set and character designs, clever camera angles, memorable songs, a slick villain, and a very good message of not messing with another holiday learning to cope with what we have Danny Elfman's score is unforgettable as well Truth be told the movie made even the executives who worked on it very nervous The dialogue is very basic and it's not that deep as far as character complexity Yet this still worked regardless inspiring all kinds of merchandise from holiday decor to clothing for Hot Topic to video games to board games to housewares to theme park attractions etc. It made over $50 million and winning critics and audiences alike being a perennial favorite for Halloween lovers as well as a hot item for costumes, cosplayers, and conventions 'Nightmare Before Christmas' remains astonishingly imaginative, brisk, beautifully told in its storytelling, and operates as a simplistic fairytale being very accessible to everyone serving as a cautionary fable
17:30 "I think 2d animatorns and motion animators are just frustrated or shy actors who can't get in front of the chameras so they act it out with the puppet", and well, now everything's basically CGI and it's hard to find a big movie with the good old stop motion... We're killing the shy actors
3:23 - Danny Elfman = composer, lyricist, associate producer and the Voices of Barrel, the Clown with the Tear-Away Face and the Singing Voice of Jack Skellington
The Haunted Mansion is MUCH older than this movie. It opened in Disneyland in 1969. Also, Tim Burton owns 50% of the rights to the film - and he supposedly won't let Disney make a ride of it (so far.)
Watching this and the behind the scenes for Corpse Bride as a kid is what made me want to work in film. Right now I'm in college doing theater makeup (designing makeup for a show for the first time right now!) and I plan on moving to Burbank to finish my Film/TV/SFX makeup schooling. Movies are magical. I can't imagine doing anything else. I wish I could go back and tell my 7 year old self "you wanna do this kind of thing, and you will". It's weird to come back now and see the faces of the people who helped me to find my career path. I just hope I can also create something that will inspire another generation of artists too.
That is so amazing! Tim Burton was literally my whole childhood, especially The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. These movies raised me more than my parents did (No offense Mom and Dad lol). People might say I'm weird and was taught wrong because I'm goth and only like dark things, but I have absolutely no regrets 🖤 It's my dream to be a stop motion animater, but I doubt that's ever gonna happen. I'm studying to be a tattooer, and am pretty close to reaching that, maybe in a year or two. Theater makeup actually sounds so awesome though! I've never really thought of that before
Update: Got accepted to my makeup school in LA and am going in June!!! So excited to work in the film industry. Thank you Tum Burton for igniting my creative spark as a kid.

Nightmare before christmas is a stop-motion, puppet animation, not claymation. The characters are built using various materials, mainly latex to allow ease of movement. A claymation would be where the characters are made from clay, or in some cases for example Wallace and gromit, where the characters are made from plastercine.
Disney initially released the film through Touchstone Pictures because the studio believed the film would be "too dark and scary for kids". The Nightmare Before Christmas was originally going to be released under Walt Disney Pictures as part of the Walt Disney Feature Animation lineup, but Disney decided to release the film under their adult themed label Touchstone Pictures, because the studio thought the film would be "too dark and scary for kids," Selick remembered. "Their biggest fear, and why it was kind of a stepchild project, [was] they were afraid of their core audience hating the film and not coming. To convey Burton's involvement and attract a wider audience, Disney marketed the film as Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Burton explained that, "…it turned more into more of a brand-name thing, it turned into something else, which I'm not quite sure about." Disney fired Burton, under the pretext of him spending the company's resources on a film that would be too dark and scary for children to see. Tim Burton was fired by Disney after Frankenweenie was completed, as the studio claimed that he had been wasting company resources and felt the film was not suitable for the targeted young audiences.
I am so grateful to all these people who went through this painstaking process for three years to bring us this magnificent film.

I was curious to watch this feature because my teacher worked on the film. lol she was telling me stories when she worked on the project. I found her, didn't know she would be interviewed.
I'd talk her ear off about this movie. So many questions that weren't answered in the documentary.
I remember watching this in art class 7th grade. 😁😊❤️One my favorites movies ever and Tim is my favorite directors.
I remember watching it in my orchestra class in 6th or 7th grade.
Jam Lym nice!!!
Too bad he didn't direct this movie lol
@lenindominguez1986 yeah I know that's why I said Tim didn't direct the movie
I've entered a mini obsession phase over this movie, and I couldn't be more grateful to the brilliant minds that helped it all come together
The fact that all of these people are spending so much time, creating the sets, creating the puppets and creating all of the environments for the puppets to interact and whatever the amount of time that it takes to do all that stuff is absolutely mine boggling.
i swear tim burten is the most amazing movie person ever i love seeing how this while prosesse gets done if i had that kind of talent i would be doing this stop motion for the rest of meh life
My Romance23 The director of this movie is not Tim Burton, it was Henry Selick. However, Tim Burton came up with the idea. Henry Selick is a brilliant director who made many several brilliant Stop Motion movies. I would recommend Coraline, it's my favorite movie.
oh i got a bit confused when i thought he was lol but i love corline and nightmare before chrismas
My Romance23 Tim Burton worked on it and gave the original sketches Nightmare Before Christmas was based on, however he went to direct Batman instead. Henry Selick did most of it. Cheers!
yep
I still love and have this movie on VHS since I was 7 years old, brings me back memories looking back. I also still know the words to the song "what's this" Tim Burton, always know how to make Disney movies and characters look adorable than scary thumbs up if you grew up watching the nightmare before christmas in those days when it first came.

“Jack is a long-limbed, elegant, spider-like man”
He said it not me
The genius that is the Tim Burton / Danny Elfman collaboration. Brilliant every time
Elfman Has Collaborated with Chris Wedge, Rob Minkoff, Rob Letterman, Yarrow Cheney, Scott Mosier, and Stephen J. Anderson.
Even more brilliant since Elfman had some influence on the characters and story.
Wow. This is why I love watching the behind the scenes of- a movie. You learn to appreciate a movie even more
I feel lots of admiration for all the crew involved in this film specifically but after watching this is like ...wow! As a drawer I will tell you that the amount of work and dedication of this animators, sculptors and the story boarder is mind blowing. Incomparable movie
growing up loving this movie, I'm so glad I found this. it really makes you appreciate how hard people work on your favorite films 💙
I am so glad they made this movie! All the hard work really paid off! It's my favorite Disney movie, my favorite movie to watch for Halloween and Christmas, and one of my favorite movies of all time 💖 I love the art, the characters, the music, and the comedy 😁
I freaking love The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's also my all time favorite movie too.
Questo film è meraviglioso...lo adoro....
Is this a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? When do I watch it? November?
That's the great thing about this movie, it can be both a Halloween and Christmas movie, or at least for me it is lol
pffft it's a yearlong movie
I recommend you watch it every day :)
Every day is Halloween, my friend
Mordecai Fan Aye!
I now have so much more respect for this movie!
Who knew that some guy in a band called Oingo Boingo could master movie scores like he does.
@@Savagemister not to mention, he's Jack's singing voice in the movie.
I remember watching this movie on VHS just so I could watch this post credits mini documentary and the few Tim Burton short films at the end, pure nostalgia! Thanks for posting ❤
Tim is such a genius in every way
This is amazing, and I'm an animation student, but who else agrees with me that Tim Burton movies are nightmare fuel???
*raises hoof* I agree
+Zerrasoron Nightmares? Never.. His movies are fascinating.. Cartoon-like..
I find them beautiful and very inspiring
but..... I'm very dark and twisted so
Still he is a idol to me
im weird
That's what makes Tim Burton movies great, I literally love all of his movies
They’re beautiful and interesting
This is my favorite movie ever. So artistic, creative, creepy, and lovable. I mean , nobody could ever pull all that off making it into one film. Complete Masterpiece! Thank you cause you all made my childhood that much better.
Quick fun fact: the person that narrated this little mini documentary is “Corey Burton” who voiced the person on the “Mickey and friends tram” at Disneyland. He also voiced the ghost host in Disneyland’s Haunted mansion Holiday
Amazing work to be good at, I don't have 1% of the patience those guys have
I’m so happy for them that their hard work paid off. This movie is still beloved to this day. It’s so well deserved!!
Thank to these people who cheered my days and keep cheering them still at 36. Your work means so much and brings me always lovely memories.
I really want a Jack Skellington puppet

@@jacefiore6203 did you just say Muppet?
ken kaneki Hahahah
I just watched this movie for the first time, and it’s like the best thing I’ve ever seen 🤣 the process of making stop-motion intrigues me so much and the music is sooo on point. “Sally’s Song” has to be my favorite. Probably going to watch this movie every year, right in the middle of the time between Halloween and Christmas.
That's the perfect time to watch it lol. Better late than never, and I'm happy you enjoyed it!
@@chscott9525I wish there will be the nightmare before christmas 2 movie.
@@chscott9525I watched it at Halloween a few years ago. I wasn't interested in it when it came out, but now I LOVE IT. I can't wait to MEET Sally and Jack at Disney Halloween party in 2024
I love this movie so much I have watched it every Halloween and Christmas since I was 9! It never gets old, I have seriously thought about the nightmare before christmas being the theme of my bedroom
Same here. I remember seeing it in the movies & then getting it on vhs when I was 13…
They should keep these sets and action figures in a museum or even use them for a sequel!!!! You have everything you need along with making new story boards, then you need lights camera action!!!
Tim Burton is amazing with his films from Sweeny Todd nightmare before Christmas even corpse bride Tim Burton has such an awesome imagination and brings them to life!! Can't wait for watever film he has planned next keep on giving us amazing films Tim Burton🥰🥰
4:50- Ah, Joe Ranft, we'll always remember you.
Henry slick is also super cool he made coraline the same way all hand made. It’s so cool.
I heard that Elfman was upset that he didn’t get more credit for his influence on the movie. I mean he practically wrote it.
burton is a genius. pure genius. i take alot of inspiration for my filmmaking from him for sure
It’s 2018 aka the 25th anniversary of this movie. For Halloween I was jack Skellington because I’m so obsessed with this movie! I swear this is one of the best movies ever because they put so much Time in effort into this movie that it is actually insane. This will always and forever be my favourite movie
This film is an amazing classic no matter if it is either a Halloween or Christmas film ❤️
Halloween.
I used to have a crush on jack skellington when I was 2 hahaha I also thought of Sally as my kid the fact that I was only 2 and I had a crush on jack was so humiliating to talk about
little did they know this would be one of the best disney movies ever
I wouldn't say it's one of the best Disney movies ever, definitely one of the best stop motion movies though.
"The Nightmare Before Christmas brings to the screen dazzling stop-motion imagery."
*Shows scene of Oogie being revealed as a disgusting mass of wriggling bugs*
Yes, simply dazzling.
I don't get how Oogie Boogies inner look with the worms and stuff was animatead/created? how did the do it?
They probably glued them together and put wires in the limbs? I have no idea.
Oogies bugs were little pieces of wire and metal painted different colors. they talk about it in the director's commentary.
i asked the same thing
Did you know oogie boogie was skinned alive in the desert and left for dead so when maggots came to eat the rest of the meat he sewed himself up with this material that no bugs can eat though
@@keeganmaynard3045 Thank you. I was wondering this.
Joe Ranft, RIP good sir.
Charming is an understatement. This movie is a masterpiece
Such extraordinary talent. I absolutely love this movie. it will always be one of my favorites of all time. thank you for gracing us with this masterpiece!!!!!
The stop motion is one of the best inventions of man.
This movie and Corpse bride are my favorite animated movies EVER
So is 9.
I love Tim Burton ♡♡♡♡
He's one of my favorite movie directors
I love Tim Burton's art style and paintings It's creepy and fantastic at the same time!
It's like a combination of Fantasy, Drama, Comedy and sometimes including Musical just like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride
And 9.
30 years old and as timeless as ever
It's from the mind of Tim Burton but director Henry Selick is the one to thank for this gem of a holiday flick despite it being only 76 minutes long
Jack Skellington embodies a preoccupation common in Burton's work over the years; the terrifying notion of being misunderstood
That's something a lot of us can relate to indeed, at times we can be carried away with something new going way overboard with enthusiasm
Halloween is special but we're reminded too why Christmas is just as beloved
This works immensely thanks to its original storytelling, stellar animation, excellent set and character designs, clever camera angles, memorable songs, a slick villain, and a very good message of not messing with another holiday learning to cope with what we have
Danny Elfman's score is unforgettable as well
Truth be told the movie made even the executives who worked on it very nervous
The dialogue is very basic and it's not that deep as far as character complexity
Yet this still worked regardless inspiring all kinds of merchandise from holiday decor to clothing for Hot Topic to video games to board games to housewares to theme park attractions etc.
It made over $50 million and winning critics and audiences alike being a perennial favorite for Halloween lovers as well as a hot item for costumes, cosplayers, and conventions
'Nightmare Before Christmas' remains astonishingly imaginative, brisk, beautifully told in its storytelling, and operates as a simplistic fairytale being very accessible to everyone serving as a cautionary fable
8:42 In my mind, this was the size of the sets. I'm actually impressed by how gigantic they really were compared to what I was expecting.
It’s a shame he never got to direct his original movie ideas.
Wow. What a team of incredible and talented people. My mind is blown.
This and Paranorman are to me the most intricate stop motion movies ever made. to date.
Uno puede dar criticas negativas a muchas peliculas, pero hablar mal de esta es algo imposible. Mis respetos. Gran pelicula.
Sin embargo hay gente que lo hace, como en Filmaffinity
Annnd this, ladies and gentlemen and everyone else, is why Tim is my favorite director
My favorite movie of all time! I will obsess over it forever!
Much better than the overly animated CGI we get nowadays
If you haven't seen ParaNorman, check it out. They did well with not overly utilizing CGI elements.
THANK YOU for putting this on youtube! I have always wanted to see a "making of" for this movie! :)
The Haunted Mansion is MUCH older than this movie. It opened in Disneyland in 1969.
Also, Tim Burton owns 50% of the rights to the film - and he supposedly won't let Disney make a ride of it (so far.)
It's so cool to see how it was made this is my favorite holiday movie I have so much respect for these animators
@@nathanhaimsonCongrats. Working in film is a DREAM OF MINE. Even just as an EXTRA. I've seen Many films FILMED in New Orleans. Especially 21 Jump street and the 2nd PLANET OF THE APES. I also saw NCIS NOLA
I never watched this movie as a kid because I found it a bit boring but my 2 year old is obsessed with it. I have a new found respect for this movie to know how much hard work and talent went into it. 😮
This is really cool. I had no idea that this much effort went into making claymations.
Nightmare before christmas is a stop-motion, puppet animation, not claymation. The characters are built using various materials, mainly latex to allow ease of movement. A claymation would be where the characters are made from clay, or in some cases for example Wallace and gromit, where the characters are made from plastercine.
I see, thanks for the info. I had no idea. XD I thought there was just one claymation thingy but apparently not lol
Still watching this during quarantine ❤️
This movie took so much dedication from all of them, it deserves the popularity 30 years later
