Theoretical limits mean jack in a TSA102, same with other names like TEC, Astro Physics etc, their optics allow for much more than the average scope. I have had Saturn up to 340x in that scope andnit was still impressively sharp, real sharp, the TSA-102 is considered one of if not the finest 4” refractor ever made.
You’re correct I’m gone 20 to 50% over the maximum theory. I see it more for the people that don’t know what it’s supposed to do like a regular entry refractor.

For visual observation on Jupiter with refractors with apertures between 76 and 127 mm, I see the best contrast and sharpness at magnifications between 95x and 120x. The downside is the image size is not large enough to see fine detail. Making the image larger makes it easier to see detail, but you lose contrast and sharpness with increasing magnification. In my experience, Saturn typically holds up better than Jupiter with increasing magnification. The challenge is to find the magnification that reveals the most information in the image, taking into account the quality of the optics, the visual acuity of the observer, and, most importantly, the seeing conditions. With Jupiter, I always start at 90x and work my way up.

I think where I’m located in Toronto the scene most days are fairly good. Sometimes it’s even super but there’s lots of light pollution when I went to Mexico. It seems to be very windy compared to here. I’m sure different locations as pluses and negatives but I find from my location the planets are mainly pretty
Sometime last year I had my 100DZ out looking at Jupiter. The seeing must have been incredible that night. I boosted the magnification if I remember correctly to 390X and Jupiter looked a lot better than I expected. Of course the image was degraded but was still ok. I was gobsmacked and I would not blame you if you don't believe me. I don't remember exactly the eyepiece combo I used but surely I was using a barlow of some kind. I think the image would be acceptable at around 325X or so.
No, I believe you I was almost there right now, but yeah yours did a lot more depends on seeing of course I didn’t try to go any higher because I don’t think I had anything stronger. Maybe I should’ve added a Barlow but I thought that would’ve been way too much, but wouldn’t hurt to try.

Re: Tracking. The EQ5 polar axis was pointing south instead of north. EQ6 mount was setup correctly, pointing north.
I was laughing because that would be a really rookie mistake but I just watched a video again so it’s the second part of that video. No both of them were pointing north if you look at it again, you’ll see the mount is pointing towards my building which is north.
@@JoeJaguar I apologize. When I returned to the video where you were using the EQ5 mount and magnified the image, I could see that it was correct. The orientation of the telescope and the darkness made it look like the mount was pointing south. Excellent video, by the way. It's a great idea to have a fellow observer participate in your video.
@@mikenofi281 no that’s OK. I really doubted myself if I was so busy thinking of something but it’s good to see that you guys are on your toes so no problem there but somethings off with the tracking maybe the batteries were getting low or maybe it’s on too tight the gears that it’s not turning even though I can feel the motor clicking, I’ll have to look into it

Nice vid. Joe what was better the TSA 102 or FS102 Tak for planetary? How much different are they and what do you perfer? Thanks!
I never tested them side-by-side and going by memory is never a valid conclusion I would say they’re probably very similar. The FS is about half the weight. The TSA is about 17 pounds I think and the FS is probably more like nine or 10 pounds so it’s a big difference.
Plus I believe the SS version since it’s only a double it is probably at least a lot cheaper
I have both and they are like apples & oranges in my opinion. You wouldn’t be disappointed with either one of them. Taks are that good.

Also, just curious what you run for eyepieces? I use Pentax XW & older XL eyepieces and they are SUPERB with my 3 Taks. Well worth a shot if you have never tried Pentax.
I still have the meade 4000 series ultra white angle, the maid in Japan ones they were rated as good as Nagler of course after that never made pieces that good anymore

@@CONDUCTORE77 to tell you the truth I thought the images were OK not as good as I normally do but I tried using a different combination of IP pieces and of course Saturn is pretty far this time
A beautiful refractor but unfortunately way too expensive for me.
That’s OK just use what you like and what you can afford. I’m just showing it on the channel for others like yourself that don’t have it what it could be.
I also have lots of inexpensive stuff too like my Celestron 4 inch F5 acro
Your Takahashi is a mighty fine scope, but I bet my Bresser 102mm/460 focal length at f/4.5 using my Generic x.8 focal reducer/field flattener bring it to f/3.6 has a wider field of view.
For sure, I’ll have a wider field of view easily. When I want to see the huge stuff, I use a 4 inch F5 refractor with a 2 inch diagonal and the 2 inch Eyepiece
