  • Part 2 We will be installation the distributor, New Valve Cover Gasket and update after 3,000 miles. After 3,000 miles we had a PO code come on. (Not Related to Any Service We Have Done). Long in this car's history the emissions system had been tampered with.

I do all the work on my vehicle. I've done lots of advanced and technical repairs, but distributors scare me. Still, my engine is plagued with oil leaks, and thanks to this video, I'll be able to hopefully tackle them all today!

There's not much adjustment on this dist, just mark the rotor / base to the head and you will be good when you re-install the dist.

I had a shop quote me over $600 to fix this. I think I will try it my self.

That repair should take an hour. $70 Diag+120hr labor $12 bucks for the O-ring is no where close to $600 bucks. That's why we do these video's.

Just bought a 1996 Nissan B14 (in Costa Rica) and have the same problem as this vehicle. Is the O ring part number the same? Since it was manufactured here?
    Thanks for any help

Hi from the UK I have a people carrier with the same engine as the Altima:-) I tried a factory oring but it still weeps. Have also changed the pcv valve. Wasn't that happy with the factory oring that was supplied via Japan. But cannot get the one listed in the UK. I know you mention a different vehicle but didn't quite catch it or is someone helpful to put one in regular mail to the UK for me please. Have tried to source the felpro one but the price of shipping via a shop is too much :-(

Thank you for the video, very helpful. Quick question: I am replacing the distributor n my 95 Altima, how do I know how to make sure the timing will be right? Is there a method to it?

    • @KNKRNR

If your replacing the dist you need to make sure the base and rotor are set exact to the old one. Take a picture for reference of your old DIST before you remove it! Install the new one in extract position as the old one. You can measure between the center of the lock bolt and the top of the base to get your new mark down. There's not a lot of adjustment in this system. To verify your timing is exact when you test drive the vehicle you will either have the normal power level it has or you will hear it ping under mid to high load. If it pings you will need to make tiny adjustment on the base setting of DIST till the power level is correct and ping is gone. If the timing is off it will lack power and ping like crazy. If it has power and no ping under load your base timing is good to go. This is the method we do for replacement DIST without using a timing light.

I have a 93 Altima, and I have replaced this o-ring three times with in a 6 month time still can't get oil to stop leaking from distributor...any tips or advice will do at this point...

I would change the PVC valve next. If the PVC valve is plugged up there may be an excess amount of positive air pressure in the engine. Too much positive air pressure can blow oil past the dist o-ring.

P.C.V. changed in clouding a number of hoses and Vac. Lines...the car does have over 350,000 miles on it., but on a good day it runs like a champ...could the E.G.R system effect this..?

@@jamesruz645 EGR wouldn't cause that leak because the engine would stall if it has to much EGR gas running through the intake. With that many miles you might have too much blowby causing a positive air pressure through out the engine. Take the oil filler cap off while its running and if you feel a a lot of air pushing out the oil fill hole then its also causing the oil to leak past the dist o-ring.
Its common for 4 cylinder engines to have some blowby but there a point the seals can't hold that positive air pressure back. If it is a blowby issue then the only fix it to rebuild the engine or install a used one with less miles on it. If it runs good but leaks otherwise I would run it till then engine gives up the ghost as no o-rings out on the market can hold back oil and positive air pressure at the same time. Do that blowby test to see if that might be the cause of premature dist o-ring failure. I'm interested to see if there is too much blowby air pressure causing this oil leak.

The seal inside that seals the shaft is leaking. I came here hoping to find a part number.
