    Happy Saturday everyone. Here's the latest video on how to perform a tuneup on a 1996 Nissan Altima. The second installment on this car will be on how to replace the valve cover gasket.

    Would your car still turn on? My distrubor went out wondering if I can just change the cap nd rotor

      The problem is that oil gets on the optical trigger down inside the distributor once the bushing wears out and the seal fails. The whole unit needs to be rebuilt/replaced.

    I know the video is a bit old but anyway of know why when I accelerate while driving my temp gauge moves erratically back n forth

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably a loose connection somewhere. One way you can check is to use a scanner to look at what the computer is reading on the temp sensor while then needle is freaking out.

      @@6speeddakota ok so ride the coder connected to the car and see if will throw a code?

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use a code reader that will read out the values of what the sensors are seeing. That way you can see if it's just the gauge or the computer is seeing a wonky value.

    Thanks for the video. I'm with you on the difficult fuel filter location. Would it make sense to replace the filter with a piece of metal fuel line, and locate a generic inline fuel filter up the fuel line closer to the engine? Wish there were a similar fix for the location of the PCV valve.

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would just stick with the OE one. You may run into issues with relocating it as moving it closer to the engine can cause the filter to heat up from the heat of the engine, boiling the fuel and causing vapour lock issues.

    Nice job! I have a '98 Altima which is stalling at idle intermittently. My mechanic was stumped as to why. Is it possible for you to narrow it down from afar? Thank you!

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This generation of Altima is notorious for an issue with oil getting onto the optical trigger in the distributor causing poor performance and stalling.
      Check out briansmobile1's channel, he has a video on fixing it.

    • @CharlieSill62VO

      ***** I will do that and thank you for your great videos! RicktheCarGuy changed out his intake manifold gasket as that was the cause of a '97 Altima running roughly...I am not about to attempt all that work! LOL

      samsonpker AAA Auto Care solved the trouble...the valve cover gasket was deteriorating to the point of oil getting onto and into the distributor cap causing misfiring. Had a major tune up and they replaced the valve cover gasket for a grand total of $850.00! Ouch!

      I test drove one when my wife and I were looking for a second vehicle and it was fantastic, solid, great air conditioning, ran perfectly, and was reasonably well cared for, had all fresh fluids and all it needed was a new set of tires and a front brake service. When driving it, I got to the end of the street, the distributor decided to take a vacation, and I had to limp it back up the road. The seller's words were "it does that sometimes" I was going to buy it and toss a new distributor in it, but our prices differed quite significantly when I offered him $400 for it, so we bought our little protege instead.

    I have a 1995 infinity g20 and recently changed out the distributor cap, wires, rotor and spark plugs. I followed instructions and my car did not start. Was I missing something?

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you have the firing order correct, if you didn't put the wires on correctly, that'll definitely cause it. If it's good, check for spark, if there is none, the distributor trigger goes bad on these engines all the time, very common problem

    thanks. q, can i replace the fuel filter without pulling the vacuum line? mine is really hard to get out 94 sentra and it's underneath the manifold :/ is there another way?

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try lift it up and go from underneath, but other than that, it's going to be a contortion act either way

    I have a 1997 Nissan pulsar aka Altima that the plugs are in really tight. I was going to change them myself but a bit worried about them. I live at Darwin Australia. Do I need to put that anti freeze on the plugs. I suppose if the garage had done it they wouldn't be so tight.

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anti-seize, not anti-freeze. That would be a recipe for disaster ;)
      One thing you can try is spray a bit of penetrating oil down in there and let it sit overnight, drive it a bit, re-spray it, then let it sit again overnight and try it again. But don't put too much in, just a squirt, because if and when you get the plugs free, the oil will all run down into the cylinders and you'll end up with a smoky mess when you start it up.

    Hey I want to know if the engine out of a 1998 automatic altima will fit in a 1996 manual altima?

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're both KA-24 engines, so it should work. just keep the old engine in case you have to swap some parts around.

    my 95 altima runs perfect when cold. soon as it hit opp orating temp it dies , is hard to start , sputters and stall when trying to accelerate. any ideas ???

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Distributors are the most common issue with these cars, if you take the distributor cap off and see oil on the inside, that's a sure fire sign that it's pretty much toast. Here's a video I found for idle air control replacement, but that wouldn't likely cause your problem. It could also be a bad coolant temp sensor telling the computer it needs more fuel than it actually does, that'll cause a rough running engine and poor fuel economy. th-cam.com/video/KVRwhINvRfs/w-d-xo.html

      new distributer, new o2 sensor, throt position sensor . egr. new maf catal not plugged new fuel filt pressure is right idle speed is good. new cap rotor plugs i have done everything i can think of like i said runs great till it gets to temp. what am i missing ?

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd test the coolant temp sensor

      temp sensor is fine. and my mistake. rephrase my original comment. the problem exist hot or cold. it starts great. idles perfect but as soon as i give it pedal it wants to choke cough and die. if i am careful when accelerating you can get it to go but it is very touchy. the least bit of gas pedal to much and cough and stal. everytime. please help. I am so frustrated. even the shop i took it to diagnosed it wrong. I can fix this car IF i know what the problem is. arrrggggg. ! lol please help what am I missing ?

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      throttle position sensor maybe, if it's conking out as soon as you give it gas. Also, check to make sure that you have the correct fuel pressure, low fuel pressure will cause it to die out since it's not getting enough fuel

    • @6speeddakota

      +El ToTo productions first thing I suggest is do a full tuneup, including spark plug wires. If you notice it stalls and it's hard to restart, as well as having a sputter or hesitation when you try jumping on the throttle, I'd suggest looking under the cover that's underneath the distributor rotor, if you see oil inside there then you need to replace the distributor. It's a common problem on older Nissan vehicles
