How To Deal with Aggressive Sulcata Tortoises

  • This week on Ask Kenan, Charles E. asks "My 6yo Sulcata Tortoise has become aggressive/territorial. How would you suggest redirecting that energy into something else? I've got him in a quarter-acre enclosure and I gave him a soccer ball to push around (which seems to have helped.) But, I was looking for other ideas that you might have tried? I have 3 more Sulcatas quickly catching up in a different area, and I'd appreciate the advice." Lucky for Charles we have ton of experience dealing with Sulcata Tortoise behavior here at Kamp Kenan and it might just surprise you what Kenan's suggestion is for this predicament!

That was my instinct to show them that they are not the alpha. I just have a really stubborn russian that likes to bite everybody. I would flip him, kept coming, flick his shell and feet, kept coming. Finally I would just hold him high in the air and give him some stern words. Still an ass. lol. He's 3 yrs old. Still immature. I have two sulcatas in a box. They are the same size however different ages. Our new tort is 8 years old and the other is 13. They are both about a foot in length but the older one is wider. Anyway. The older one has been charging the other one. Not all the time but enough for me to look it up. I think they are both female but they are still too small to tell. Everytime I flip the aggressive one over she shoots pee. She paces the food and then tries to chase Nelson the younger one away. He/she walks away for a bit but comes back and grabs a few bites and runs. Anyway do you think it's wise to keep them together or let them work it out? My enclosure is as big as I can have it for now and we keep them outside all summer. I live in the states in the Midwest. I do have two tort boxes but it would be nice to keep them together. I feed hay most of the time. It's when I feed greens that my older one gets possessive and charges. I put her in the time out tub....

Ok so I need some advice, my male leopard tortoise is trying to breed with my baby female sulcata when I let them walk around my yard, I stop them when I see them but he will always get on top of her again. They have there own pens but there a bit small so I just let them walk around outside of them. How can I stop him from getting on top of her?

Hey Ken I have two male socata tortoise. One out weighs one by 30 pounds. The biggest one mount the other male as if they are mating. Is this normal for two males to behave in this manner. I know that you would know the answer. By the way I am a student in the classroom watching your videos. And I found some fluckers tortoise food at .y local Petsmart. They only have one variety of fluckers tortoise food unfortunately. I just introduced the food to them on 11- 11- 20. They were hesitant to eat it. Maybe because it was new to them. What do you think. Leave the comments below. 😄 Just had to say that. Anyway would love to hear your input. Thanks for the information about climate difference since I live in Southern California. Thanks again.

I have a 36 yr old male California Desert Tortoise (females are larger) and he is a smaller male. I have him because he was too aggressive is his colony of 5. He has a cracked plastron (just below his armpits). Doesn't slow him down, but does make him a little vulnerable. His problem in the colony was that he was the smallest, but kept trying to mate with the females all day everyday so he would get flipped over all the time. He would also try to mate with the males and get in fights. Which he would also lose. So he was obviously not the dominant male, but he didn't get the hint. I would love to be able to rescue more of his species, but with his temperament, I can't. Any ideas?

We have a 2-3 year old sulcata who has started getting very aggressive every day with a smaller male sibling. They have the whole backyard to roam and they share a heated shed at night. When he isn't ramming the other, he is often mounting him as if he was a female (or prison cell mate). I tried flipping him upside down several times but doesn't seem to help stop the behavior and he goes right back at charging towards the other.
Wife wants to take it to the vet to nuter him thinking it will cut down the testosterone production but I have my doubts it will help...or even possible on a tortoise Separating them is not practical. Waiting for him to kill the other isn't good either. Very frustrating.

if it's just the two males you've got then it's probably not good for them to be together, pretty much the only time male tortoises get along is when there's lots of females around, even then they might not

Thanks great advice. Have 8 large Boyz and Girlz.
Someone brought in another large male
Started messing with Rock my alpha.
Had to rehome the new guy. Now that spring has sprung Rocky is aggressive again.
Will keep and eye in his behavior, and will fill his 150# body over for the first time in his 30 YO life. Should be a wake up call.
