    What a range of personalities you had with those three little tortoises. The spunky active little cherry head, the easy going albino elongated, and the shy little elongated, that just wanted to be left alone.

    (molecular biologist here) It's Tyrosinase! (pronounced tie-ro-sin-ays). It performs a key part of melanin synthesis, it's the rate limiting step, so without it (or if it works less efficiently) you don't get as much melanin. (fun fact, these enzymes work via oxidation, which is part of the reason potatoes go black after a while when you slice them up and expose the tissue to oxygen)

    A fellow torty and turtle dad myself, my baby sulcatas and jr baby red foot have such the personalities. Not as picky of eaters as a russian tort i had, the red foot enjoys the occasional strawberry time to time. Great channel you got man and with such passion, it shows. Keep on educating! Turtle power!

    Early growth rates are fascinating. This year, I hatched 6new Box Turtles in two days . Sadly, one failed to thrive and died at three months . One was tiny like the one that died, but he is my most aggressive feeder and is now second largest. There is one that is half again larger than the biggest one, and three that are close in size and maybe 5 times their hatching weight since hatching last July. Loving those dusted mealworms and earth worms..

    I wish everyone considering getting a medium or larger size tortoise would research it first and see what adults of that species look like. I got my tortoise Emelie from a family that simply decided she was too much work. Their son was in highschool and lost interest in her. They have a life-span sometimes longer than ours so being a tortie parent is a life long commitment.

    Tortoises need water..... THANK YOU! I am so frustrated when I watch respected TH-cam channels and they say to water them only once or twice a week. WHY would you do that? Give them fresh clean water and let the animal decide if it's thirsty . As always Kenan, you are the best!

    No pyramiding is only caused by too dry conditions. Keeping hot temps and high humidity has hatchlings makes smooth tortoises. (For most species)

    • @missholly4307
      @missholly4307 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wrong. An incorrect diet, especially one with too much calcium also causes pyramidying.

    • @bakarikonte
      @bakarikonte 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Miss Holly WRONG :● It's okay I wont critizise your opinion. Pretty sure neither of us are scientist with tortoises specialization. Just saying what I believe to be true based on my experience and others.

    • @StickyFeets
      @StickyFeets 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree 100%. Closed chambers are the way to go. Humidity is the one factor that many people overlook. Unfortunately the majority of keepers choose to ignore or disagree with this. I just direct them to Tom’s decades long success with his smooth sulcatas.

    • @geofjonescustoms7332
      @geofjonescustoms7332 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had turtles and tortoises for close to 40 years humidity has everything to do with it . Rhetorical question ? Have you ever seen an aquatic turtle with pyramiding . The pyramiding is always more pronounced in the earlier stages of growth when they are less tolerant of moisture deprivation ; humidity . Think 2mo human not as tolerant of the sun as a 20 year old adult .

    Random question: how long after seeing my Musk turtles mating should I expect possible eggs? Sorted out a nesting area already, just curious. Do you think I should put a heating lamp on it at night to encourage its usage? I'm in the UK and night tend to be a little cooler than I imagine their habitat in the wild would be. Found lots of info on how long eggs take to hatch not so much how long till laying. Thanks for your great work matey, Chris

      Which means they don't have Melanin but that's not due to a fault in producing Tyrosinase, but somewhere else along the steps to producing Melanin.
      They're different coloured from T- Albinos due to the Tyrosinase colour as far as I understand it.
