Hi Kenan, thanks so much for answering my question. I will definitely try the brightly coloured ball and see how we get on. If not I’ll have to persuade the mrs for a female ha.

    • @2Swift4u
      @2Swift4u 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Keep in mind though, that with hermans toirtoises you should have at least a 1:3 male - female ratio. So that means you would have to get at least 3 females for your male. If you had only one female it could get very stressful and even dangerous for the female because male hermans tortoises are known for persuing the femals and ramming them during the breeding season. So if there's only one female your male will constantly persue the same female. So either keep the male animal by itself or build a whole group with at least 4 animals.

Did the brightly coloured ball work for your male Hermann's? Our 19 y/o Hermann's girl isn't really bitey, unless she feels like the amount of food we gave her wasn't enough... and especially when my girlfriend has red nail polish on her toes... :P

Keir Gibbons We had also Greek tortoise. He loved tomatoes and watermelon :) his home was in our sauna because the floor was colder over there. Every morning he walked to the kitchen and scraped the fridge with his arms because he knew where the salaf and tomatoes are. Sometimes he came to knock our doors with his little toes, to wake us up and give him food :D During summer if he wanted to go out into the Sun, he went by himself, sometimes he flipped over because he had to climb over one obstacle. He even had his own sandbox outside where he dug his burrow. When he wanted to come back in, he came (all dirty of course). He was also aggressive sometimes and tried to snap your toes and fingers, but sometimes he just fell asleep next to me when I was laying on the floor. One good, trick was to give him a cherry tomato. He had to chase it down before he could grab and eat it so that way he also consumed the extra energy he had.
When he had eaten outside (and had plenty of food), after he had finished he had no interest in biting. He just wanted to find a peaceful place to take a nap, either a warm place in the Sun or a colder, shady place.
And as he lived in our sauna, he used to take a shower every time somebody else took a shower. He also liked to drink from the floor.

I put little ping pong balls in his table so my Hermann’s can play. I also made sure his table was bigger than he really needs (5ftx8ft)and it has plenty of different grasses, plants, bridges and rock piles for him to climb over and break up his vision so the table feels larger plus it helps build muscle strength . 🐢🤗 im uk based too Hope this may help 🤞🏻🐢🤞🏻

I would suggest feeding the tortoise more. Also, tortoises are attracted to bright colors, particularly orange, red yellow and green. The tortoises I work with (sulcatas) get fed from an orange bucket, and even though I put down delicious grasses for them right in front of their faces, if I don’t pull the bucket away and hide it, they will chase me down trying to bite at the bucket. Tortoises are definitely creatures of habit, check the color of the shoes you are wearing, or it might be wanting it’s favorite treat from you. Try giving it a foraging activity, Kenan’s idea of chasing a little red ball is a great idea, (just make sure the little guy can’t eat it) also do a scatter feeding in/outside its enclosure. Because tortoises are hind gut fermenters, they need to eat several times a day, think grazers such as horses. It’s incredible how much these little guys will eat. Great question.

First of all if your tortoise walks along the walls of it's enclosure all the time then that's a sign that it's not happy with the situation. My greeks used to do the same thing when they were inside. Now they live outside in a big enclosure and they don't do it anymore. So get the tortoise outside and build a natural environment for it where it can be a tortoise. Don't interact with it all the time either. It shouldn't be focused on persons.

Yes very good video spot on about the possible reason for snapping , the problem I believe with many tortoise is they have bad eye sight some have been kept with the wrong light type on them or their sight deteriorates over time , sometimes they are hungry or just randy , since we lost one of ours we give the male an old boot or two , often he will hump the boots for a good hour before he is happy again ....thanks for interesting points .
    One question .....
When introducing a new tortoise to an existing group shouldn't you keep them apart for several weeks and is this because of the risk of infection being brought in by the new tortoise ?
    Many thanks
    G
    From London GB
Ps I have my one who lives in the house at night time but roams freely in the garden during the day .
The fox is a known predictor to watch out for and large birds that can swoop down and pick up a tortoise ....Rats all these things have to be thought of , also if you bait mice with poison the mice take the poison but in the time it takes to die the poison seems to make the mice attack and munch on anything so keep eyes sharp ....don't let them munch on the tortoise...

a red shoe on s string hanging just off the ground that he can push , twist, fight with helps greatly as stimulation and exercise otherwise he takes it all out on the female hurting or injuring her with constant contact, cornering, harassment. works really well the shoe on a 45 degree hanger or crane design. he plays with it for hours. made a huge difference with my male.

Turtle's are very inteligent and like the elephant, they never forget. They also have feelings and can feel happy, joy, sadness, anger, all the feelings we feel. If someone mistreated them, they WILL remember it and it takes time and patients to break them of that habit. I had a wild turtle that was injured from a car (old damage) to his back leg, he seemed mean, snaping all the time, me and my turtle baby broke him of it, tho I did tap him lightly on his shell and told him no and let him feel my emotions, I also called him by his name. He became very friendly after that, of course baby didn't like him snaping at me either.....lol. Just give him plenty of love and care. Just as we learn about other ppl, their personalities, watch and learn about a turtle and any other animal the same way. Hope this helps.

My Herman has tried to eat my toe when I let him loose in house one time but I think he was checking for food since I just took off my shoes and my feet stunk. but he isn't aggressive like he wants to hurt me . I do think he is some what territoral in his enclosure. Though ,I act like my hand is walking around and he tries to chase it away! I think it's a territorial thing with yours.I would put a few live like little tortoise figurines that are close to his size or bigger out when you let him out maybe he might think this is not his territory or maybe he will attach those instead. Good luck!

He goes for toes and fingers but if we can distract him with food he usually stops and then eats. He will not try to bite bare skin like legs or arms, just toes or fingers that are small enough. I've seen him chow down a a worm on the sidewalk as well

To the person that asked the question.
Constant pacing of the tortoise table is common with indoor tortoises. It usually down to the heat light being too hot, and the complete lack of structure in the table. 4 x 2 is also too small for an adult male. if you increase the size, add plenty of structure like plants, rocks and wood and make sure that you have your heat lamp on a thermostat and you let it go off overnight you should be fine. UK house temps on averege is around 20 to 21 degrees. Thats fine for a tortoise overnight. You should look to get him outside pretty much permanently for the summer months.

Should I worry about house and horse flies bugging my new tortoise? In my area there's been more flies in the late spring - early fall, and I'm a bit worried that they might disturb my new adult tortoises since this will be the first time they are outside for warmer weather, please let me me know what I could do to help
