  • Another great question this week for Kenan. This one comes from Patreon supporter Nathan See who asks "Do Cherry Heads do better in groups of 2-3 instead of keeping just 1?" Group life vs the single life for a tortoise keeper is a question many people who are just getting started in reptiles ask themselves. Find out Kenan's answer now!

I love that two. I have 2 Sulcata babies. I notice most of the time the smaller one sleeps ontop of the bigger one lol. I love watching them eat and interact. It was funny when they both didnt realize they grabbed the same piece of food. It was like a lady and the trap moment lol.

Some tortoises live single lives, some live group lives. But I wouldn't recommend thug life for tortoises, though. Young hooligan tortoises holding up cabbage patches. Then the police tortoises show up and are like "what's all this then". Then the old wise judge tortoise will be like "I have to give you the harshest possible punishment. I hereby sentence you to be flipped over." Too fast-paced if you ask me.

I bought a young Red-Footed Tortoise last August. I decided that I would like a couple more so I bought two more just over three weeks ago. It has made a big difference to the feeding of the original Animal which is now taking a lot more varied diet. It was refusing skin on fruit but now eats. Although the new ones are a year younger and a year smaller they all get along fine together with the original happily sharing its favourite hide.

I had a redfoot for 42 years. Her name was Studebaker. She had full run of my kitchen, was paper trained and loved to be hand fed. Every year I'd take her to a local library during their summer reading program. I don't know how old she was, but she was almost full grown when I got her. After a few years I got adopted by a cat named Motor City Kitty and they slept together. They made quite a pair.

I just got a red footed tortoise and wanted to build him/her an outdoor enclosure for the summer because I live in Ohio. What would you recommend on how to build an enclosure that I can walk into like a gate or something and how do I prevent other animals like squirrels and mice, etc from entering? Thanks kenan!!! I also tried sending you an email but it keeps coming back and doesn’t work.

I'd add that it is important to try as best you can to source your group from the same source. This helps with knowing the locality and genetics, as well as health history. Parasites are a big issue in imports and even some "CB" tortoises and turtles, and having some back history saves you some potential headache
