Spray the tracks pins with a 50/50 mixture of diesel and ATF, then tighten the tracks to "stupid tight" and drive it around like that for a few hours. After that, loosen the tracks to proper tension and they should be free. If not, re tighten and drive it around some more.
had a buddy who took black paint and a fine brush and painted the raised gear numbers...anyways..your Dad has a good eye for detail, as well as you..great job
This is like "The Perils of Pauline" or "Radar Men From The Moon!" I keep wanting it to move under its own power and just loosen up the tracks and then I'm left hanging until the next episode!!! I guess I'll see you next time, same Bat time, same Bat channel! 🦇🦇🦇
I used that same seat on my D2 with side tank. It fit good other than the left armrest interferes with the tank. Ended up just cutting a piece of plywood and used that as a spacer. It worked great.
When I bought it they said it fit a D4 or a D2. I've noticed since then they changed the description. Theoretically only the bolt holes are different. Otherwise it's really not a bad seat. 👍
Have faith Brothers! It will come together! It bites when things like that happen but you'll get it fixed. Maybe build some temporary brackets to lift the fenders an inch or so. Then put them back down after you get the tracks loose again.
Gotta love it when all that biscuit and gravy prep finally pays off 👍 lol 🤣🤣 Fun fact - the reason why these old Cats only had the parking brake on the one brake pedal is because there is no differential between the tracks, only the steering clutches. So as long as both steering clutches are engaged, just the one brake lock holds both tracks 🤓
The biscuits and gravy were definitely my favorite prep work, 🤣. It never dawned on me until you mentioned it about the brakes. You would think I would have realized that when we took it all apart. Now it makes complete sense. 😁
Those rails will be fine - it just needs a mile or two on it to free up. Maybe take the other guard off, then just tow the D4 around the yard for an hour or so. Can also dribble acetone/ATF mix, into the gaps on the links. Any pins that remain tight, hit them with the oxy-acetylene torch and redo the oil application - they'll turn out mint. :)
I found a cat i think its the same model. Its on a gold mine way back in the mountains here in Alaska it is brand new still has factory paint on the tracks It looks like if you took yours and just parked it in the woods. Maybe 16 hours on it.
Those bloody stuck tracks have come back to haunt you and bruised D4, you both are doing a great job on the finishing touches, great to see you two having a difference of opinion on the seat. LOL just loved it. It's a good thing you guys are getting the injectors serviced, make old D4 run beautiful and per like a CAT. Cheers guys see on the next one. Peter from AUS✌🛠🔩🗜🪛☀🌊
Stuff happens when restoring cars or old equipment. Restored a couple old trucks myself. I can guarentee you. Not 1 person has restored anything and not had to fix and repaint something.
We're going to do a little work on the 7U toolbar Dozer. Finish the Chevrolet truck wiring. Then we have a 1945 5T 5 roller track frame D4 that will be our next big project!
Looking mighty fine boys, shame about the guard. I doubt very much that the plywood used for that seat base would be marina ply or waterproof, maybe paint it with tar paint or the like to seal it and save any rain damage resulting. Gee she’s looking sweet
Thank you! That's definitely a great idea to waterproof the seat. At least while it's under my watch the tractor won't sit outside very often. If it does you can bet the seat base will be kept inside. 👍
What a bummer. The fender got smucked. But now we might have solved the mystery why almost every D2 and D4 has the fenders ruined. The handbreak on these works exactly as on my own tractor.
Check with antique crawler parts in Laramie, Wyoming. I think he had a few. General gear in Idaho may have some. If you're a member of the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club, ACMOC, you can ask around on the form. That's where I would start. Unfortunately I don't have any extras at the moment. I'm going to be putting the other one I have on our 5T. Hope this helps. 👍
That’s not really something you’d want to do with a new engine and rings. If a cylinder runs dry or is over fueled during initial break in and seizes, the engine would have to come back apart. It takes a good 20 hour run time with about half of that under load before the stack will start to dry up.
If these machines were easy to restore they all would be restored.
I know stuff like this happens when restoring old equipment, but man what a kick in the gut.
We will definitely get past it! Things are going to get creative I'm sure. 👍

I have a lot of experience with 1 step forward and 2 back.
Well, that’s the long and short of it! 😂
Very true! I'm confident that we'll get there, we're very close. 😁
I was referring to the placement of the seat, and the difference in your height. I love your guys videos.
Holy smokes, that went right over my head! 🤣 Thanks again Tom!
Love you guys, you make the best videos!!!

Run theat thing in3rd gear those track won't loosen any other way
Keep up the good work that y’all are doing

I like mine but I definitely keep it covered up. It doesn't see much sun. keep up the great work!

That's a beautiful D2! 👍
Drive it around backwards with the bobcat if you have to , to loosen up the tracks will work better !!

Lipstick to mark stuff with I use red lipstick when putting up sheet rock or paneling
This too shall past chins up. You two have been very creative in the past.
You will find a way!!😊😊

Very funny closing story. I have one like it too.😂
I was surprised how far that tailgate bent. It honestly looks like a rainbow. I think we all have a story like that. 🤣
the spacers under the tool box are to allow water to dry under the box.
Opps

Interesting, I just love stories like this. If you can find the serial number on it I can let you know what year it is. 👍
@@lifeafterourloss Ya it may take a year shes under snow now:(
Yummy!
Biscuits and Gravy
I make them every Sunday morning. 😊
It's looking great. Nice work.
Thanks 👍

Work around Cat 40 years most in parts service in procurement…. I was involved in many of these classic parts purchases… nice work!!!!
Thank you, much appreciated! I've always enjoyed working with you guys. 😊
@@lifeafterourloss👍
Another great video. You guys just plain wear me out just watching all the effort you two are putting into the D4 to get it right.
The tool box looks so nice!
Excellent channel 👍

You guys are doing a fantastic job. Keep the old iron running. What’s the next project ? I see you have other cool things around the yard.

Amazingly you can remove the bolt and slide the little cover forward thru the dash to reset your pinion. Putting it back is hard tho!

It definitely explains the thicker fenders on later 6U & 7U models. Those fenders take a beating.
I need a cat tool box

OH! Too bad about the fender, hope you can get it fixed and get those track chains working.
We will definitely get this figured out. It just might take some time. 😊👍
Aaron, did I hear you say that you're using Korean komatsu paint on your American made classic D4 Caterpillar dozer?
I just don't know what to say
Yep Komatsu paint! It just happened to be the closest color match. 😊
You should have taken it out with the bad injectors and ran it till you got them loosened up

she sure is pretty
Bummer..
WHY NOT SPLIT THE TRACK AND FIX THOSE PINS ONCE AND FOR ALL/ CHEERS
I have a feeling that's going to be our next step. 👍
