Man and it looks like he is having so much fun while doing it too, like he's just loving every moment. I love when you can see people loving the art they are sharing.
My Mom loved to be introduced to new music. A week before she passed (about a month ago), I was visiting her and my father and I played this for her. She loved it. "Feel" brought tears to her eyes. You were the last musician I introduced her to, and now every time I listen to you she is with me. Thank you for that. Your music will move music forward.
The beauty was that the chorus at the end was designed for anyone to sing and the variation speaks to the beauty that anyone can sing.... brings a tear to the eye honestly.
Imagine an artist, who's able to play piano like a genius, nearly every instrument on this world on a high level, has a perfect pitch, understands music on a level it has never been before AND being a insane entertainer, making music with the crowd like we have never seen before AND being an insanely kind human being. There you go, this is Jacob Collier. Man, I love this dude.
It's so perfect it feels soulless. I really don't like Jacob Collier, even if I admit he's a musical genius. For example, I've never seen him playing/singing acoustic blues, I'm pretty sure it would feel kind of robotic and non human.
The sound engineer did an absolutely stunning job with capturing every instrument tonal depth and clarity. The piano sounds like a studio sound room recording job!

Never heard of this guy. I think this is the best Tiny Desk I’ve ever seen. His music moved me to tears. Very profound musician. Those vocal harmonies were stunning.
How did you like his music? Did you see the stuff he crafted as an adolescent? Look at "don't you worry bout a thing" by him. A masterclass, he shows an incredibly broad understanding of even music (brazilian, african) he had no business knowing about at that age or even anyone should be able to master like he had at that age, playing not only each part, but each part masterfully, exquisitely. The most stunning pan-instrumentalist and gift to humanity I have ever seen in the musical world. But I really wonder how you feel about it. I was shocked to read that you only just came across him, but, understandable as that is, I just commented on that "don't you worry bout a thing" video that I can't believe it's only been seen 6 million times over the span of 10 years. I figured I must have watched it on 1000 different devices A crazy under-appreciation of his talent, if you ask me. Everyone should atleast hear and see him operate once in their life. Glad you came across him!
i guess there in lies my only issue with jacob...he has no readily identifiable style,. His style is pretty much i can take everyone else's style and do it well. now ofcourse developing your own style takes time but the day he does, it will be so powerful.
What freaks me out is I've written out my influences and those three always make the list. And the fact that Jacob made those choices and you noticed too makes the world just feel a little bit smaller. And connected. If art is morale then I can't think of anything more quietly inspiring than when someone you love, loves the same things you do.

Aw, I feel ya, man. I just sat almost whole night through with NPR concerts and I'm ending my today musical journey at 9am with this brilliant musical gem. And I barely understand what they singing about but seems like music is really an universal language.
Jacob's got that "1940's" old soul vibe & sound. Simply Masterful. And them backup singers were not "backup" singers. They are level with Jacob and simply stunning

This is fantastic. In my humble opinion, Jacob should play more shows in this "acoustic" format. Without live-looping and pre-recorded bits, the compositions really get a chance to breathe and the playful musicality factor is increased to 1000%.
you have to see his live shows with the same band (except Becca Stevens) he did in the last year.. for me it was incredible.. sure there are still some smal parts with looping but still it was fuckin awesome
Jacob Collier is a genius. That first song could have been a pretty standard two-chord folk song but moved into so many surprising directions and chord harmonies. So zesty.

@@K1LL14N how a out this one? He's a professional race driver and you go for a drive with him and he starts off with. "let's go shall we? First we put the car in reverse, down to neutral.. And then to drive.. Now, while I press the accelator you will feel, a, sensation, called G forces" *leans in close with that grin like he's playing the piano* "now, there's a sharp left tu" I'd have to say "DUDE JUST FUCKING DRIVE" thaaats it.. He performs like he thinks he needs to hold our hand the whole way. Most musicians when playing the part when he looked up in the air like he was playing stars would have looked down with their eyes closed or just invisioned things without showing us. He's a fireworks pointer, "you see that? See that?" I'm done.

Unless I missed something, at the beginning of the second song, the band starts singing a three part harmony without a starting pitch note. Any musicians out there will know how insanely talented and well rehearsed you have to be to do that. Basically means each member had to inherently know the key of the song in their head and adjust their harmony accordingly without hearing any music to base it off of. Mad props cause I know I woulda came in with some wild hyena note.
I want to talk about the drummer for a moment. Especially during 'feel'. He adds these subdivisions and stabs with the ride and hihat that fly completely under the radar. You don't hear them, you just... -feel- the change in the feel of the section of the song. That's what a great drummer should do to a song. Change it completely without it being obvious it was him. Just, such a humble and transformative approach to an otherwise loud and pride-prone instrument. (No shade, I'm a drummer, just stating as I see)
Jacob Collier's music is accessible and wonderful to listen to, but the more you know about music, the more every single part of it absolutely explodes your brain. How can anyone have so much command of the structure and texture of music, such unfathomable power to play with rhythm and harmony, seemingly completely effortlessly, and yet still manage to craft a melody so approachable and singable that he can get a whole group to sing along on their first hearing? What Jacob Collier does with music reflects the reasons I listen to Bach and Brahms: drawing you in with a beautiful and memorable melody, laid overtop a complex and spidering web of harmony, counterpoint, and structural interrelation, which deeply rewards every single repeated listening. I never imagined I would see in my lifetime a single man blessed with so much talent, but I'm glad I'm alive now to hear what he does.
Sir, I concur with your observations and could not have said it better. I haven't stopped listening to him since my first time, the songs and playing get better and juicier with repeated listening, though ever fresh and surprising. They unpack, rewire your brain, and become your favorite drug...

He literally hands over the bass to the bassplayer in the last song so he can do the solo on the other instrument, while he could've just done the rhythm section in the first half and let the poor guy play all the way through :p
What do you guys mean by chop out? Definitions online are kinda hard to put together. And the definition is kinda hard to understand for someone who doesn’t drum at all
I think what makes it special is the constraint. On his own Jacob goes wild with harmony, melody, layers upon layers as tall as skyscrapers as he can't pour out his voice quickly enough. Here there are 6 of them. Each, albeit, playing multiple parts and instruments, but still only 6. The essence of each piece has to be distilled to something performable, and performed at a tiny desk, no less. I like this kind of Jacob the best, and I think as he's matured as a musician we're seeing more and more restraint as he's practiced playing in constraint with different collaborators. I feel like it's freeing him more, and we're just getting better and better expressions of his overflowing musical fount with each passing year.

To be fair, I've heard people including my friend say he is just not really into Jacob's music. He listened to a bunch of his songs but wasn't impressed. I guess everyone has their own cup of tea, right? I can't imagine someone who only loves pop-music through and through to listen to Jacob to be fair.
I got tinnitus and its really loud. There are many times that I want my life to just end. Then I heard Jacob Collier. Through his music, I began to love my life again. Thank you so much, Jacob. Extend my gratitude to your mom and dad!
Exactly what I was thinking as I watched the smile on the drummer's face during the 2bd number... He just looks so happy to be there ... And yet he is also so gifted. All these musicians are playing on a much much higher plane than the rest of us mere mortals.
It’s not often artists this talented get mic’d and recorded by engineers and techs equal to the task. And we have to love Jacob and his coat of many colors.
Is no one going to talk about how good the backing vocalists were? Jacob is great because he's not one of those big headed celebrities which uses backing vocalists to enhance his performance, they are a fundamental part of the ensemble and they even have specific parts in which both of them sing alone. They could all easily have a solo career, and maybe they do. It really made me think about how true musicians often don’t care if they are leading or not, but that being a part of the sound is enough.
It's the most conflicting feeling listen to Jacob.. I realize the reason I don't play his music as background noise whether it be working out, getting ready to work or my commute, etc... is due to the fact that his music commands attention. It captivates you and takes you on a journey of feeling and thought. It's not mindless. I just finished this video and it was exhausting, it was so good
I agree, this music commands attention. Jacob has a way of becoming one with any instrument he’s playing, the musicians joining him on stage, harmonies, the audience… who also become musicians. And he made four albums in one year before this performance! I’m blown away by all of this.
I really like how Jacob gave the backsingers so much room. I feel like often times they are just assistants and no actual band member like in this one.
If you're familiar with his work, they're actually fully featured artists that he gave title credit on a handful of tracks -- definitely more than just "backup" singers to him
They're not even his band members, but rather good friends who support each other, and you can feel their relationship is bigger than just proffessional by the way they interact with each other... Just beautiful to watch
The best thing about Jacob Collier is that he show clearly shows the joy he feels while he performs his music. It's so obvious he is someone who chose to live his life for music and loves every second.
And it's so effortless, he is so at ease with musical complexities which would baffle most people that he can just lie back and play with all the patterns and intricacies and give us little bits of beauty, followed by fragments of tongue-in-cheek indecision, all blending together to create a really complex and fulfilling piece of time. cheek

I just watched his Glastonbury show as a Jacob Collier newbie and was blown apart by his talent. This video was my next stop. Dear god, this guy is just off the chart talented and deserves to be recognised on a truly global scale. Plus, he’s the best thing outta Britain right now!! 👏
i think his new stuff is meant to be played with a band and not the "single man show" that i liked aswell. But seems like Djesse vol2 is perfect for this stuff. Im also waiting to see what else can he do on the upcomming releases.

Watching this for the first time July 2023 because MARO had her own Tiny Desk a few days ago that I enjoyed. Whenever I feel like modern music is trash, I come to Tiny Desk and they introduce me to stuff like these talented folks.
In my 8 years on TH-cam, I don't think I have never commented on a youtube video before, but if any video deserves it, this is probably it. I knew that Jacob Collier was an amazing musician, but: WOW. Just at a loss for words at the talent on display here. Astounded? Blown away? Flabbergasted? Humbled? Grateful? None of them do proper justice to the emotion I felt watching this.

I think my favourite thing about Jacob Collier is that he knows how to show off while still letting his accompanying musicians shine - on Feel especially. That requires some serious skill that goes beyond natural talent.
My God... I've been listening to music for well over 40 years... I've heard it all, truly. But this young man, who sounds like the BEST of singers from the 1940s and 50s, is pure magic. So sincere... so genuine... its totally retro, and yet somehow, so new.

Jacob does not TOUCH the best of 40s and 50s singers list. He does not come close to any best singer list of any time period. I like his music, very smooth and nice sounding. I'm with you Mark, been listening to music for most of my close to 80yrs and Jacob is a genius. How do you define a "great singer"? Opera singers can "sing" but Jacob moves me in more ways, just with his sense of timing and feel for the emotion of the song.
One of the most impressive parts of this performance is when they all come in together at the beginning of Feel at 5:29 singing that F# sus 2 and its perfectly pitched. No reference tone from the piano, just that quick check around the room at 5:15, so subtle you'd miss it if you weren't paying attention. That's what perfect pitch looks like.
Whisker Whippers ™️ True. At 5:14 you can hear the bass barely play the chord , while a singer hums the arpeggio. But still incredible to hit that chord and make it almost ring. So impressive!
It's truly amazing how the human ear can do that! I was in a choir for more than 10 years, and sometimes when singing something we would use notes from the piece that came before as references if we had to start with difficult chords. It worked (almost) every time xD
Jacob Collier is one of the most brilliant minds alive when it comes to harmony and melody. His understanding of music, and as a result respect garnered from the heavy hitters, is beyond under appreciated. I wish nothing but the best for him!

Aw, I feel ya, man. I just sat almost whole night through with NPR concerts and I'm ending my today musical journey at 9am with this brilliant musical gem. And I barely understand what they singing about but seems like music is really an universal language.

This is fantastic. In my humble opinion, Jacob should play more shows in this "acoustic" format. Without live-looping and pre-recorded bits, the compositions really get a chance to breathe and the playful musicality factor is increased to 1000%.

Falsetto is not a voice classification. Every bass singer has a falsetto. Jacob is also more of a low baritone, not a real bass.

Unless I missed something, at the beginning of the second song, the band starts singing a three part harmony without a starting pitch note. Any musicians out there will know how insanely talented and well rehearsed you have to be to do that. Basically means each member had to inherently know the key of the song in their head and adjust their harmony accordingly without hearing any music to base it off of. Mad props cause I know I woulda came in with some wild hyena note.

I want to talk about the drummer for a moment. Especially during 'feel'.
He adds these subdivisions and stabs with the ride and hihat that fly completely under the radar. You don't hear them, you just... -feel- the change in the feel of the section of the song. That's what a great drummer should do to a song. Change it completely without it being obvious it was him. Just, such a humble and transformative approach to an otherwise loud and pride-prone instrument. (No shade, I'm a drummer, just stating as I see)
He's definitely good at 'shuffling' the notes- real fidgety. Also I LOVE drummers who can play that softly.. rare (and brilliant) trait

Jacob Collier's music is accessible and wonderful to listen to, but the more you know about music, the more every single part of it absolutely explodes your brain. How can anyone have so much command of the structure and texture of music, such unfathomable power to play with rhythm and harmony, seemingly completely effortlessly, and yet still manage to craft a melody so approachable and singable that he can get a whole group to sing along on their first hearing? What Jacob Collier does with music reflects the reasons I listen to Bach and Brahms: drawing you in with a beautiful and memorable melody, laid overtop a complex and spidering web of harmony, counterpoint, and structural interrelation, which deeply rewards every single repeated listening. I never imagined I would see in my lifetime a single man blessed with so much talent, but I'm glad I'm alive now to hear what he does.

My exact feeling as well.
I think what makes it special is the constraint. On his own Jacob goes wild with harmony, melody, layers upon layers as tall as skyscrapers as he can't pour out his voice quickly enough.
Here there are 6 of them. Each, albeit, playing multiple parts and instruments, but still only 6. The essence of each piece has to be distilled to something performable, and performed at a tiny desk, no less. I like this kind of Jacob the best, and I think as he's matured as a musician we're seeing more and more restraint as he's practiced playing in constraint with different collaborators. I feel like it's freeing him more, and we're just getting better and better expressions of his overflowing musical fount with each passing year.

Is no one going to talk about how good the backing vocalists were? Jacob is great because he's not one of those big headed celebrities which uses backing vocalists to enhance his performance, they are a fundamental part of the ensemble and they even have specific parts in which both of them sing alone. Amazing.

They could all easily have a solo career, and maybe they do. It really made me think about how true musicians often don’t care if they are leading or not, but that being a part of the sound is enough.
From child prodigy, to Quincy Jones' protege, to musical force; this young man is one of the most versatile musicians I have ever heard.
He reminds me a lot of Sufjan Stevens.
It's the most conflicting feeling listen to Jacob.. I realize the reason I don't play his music as background noise whether it be working out, getting ready to work or my commute, etc... is due to the fact that his music commands attention. It captivates you and takes you on a journey of feeling and thought. It's not mindless. I just finished this video and it was exhausting, it was so good

The best thing about Jacob Collier is that he show clearly shows the joy he feels while he performs his music. It's so obvious he is someone who chose to live his life for music and loves every second.
And it's so effortless, he is so at ease with musical complexities which would baffle most people that he can just lie back and play with all the patterns and intricacies and give us little bits of beauty, followed by fragments of tongue-in-cheek indecision, all blending together to create a really complex and fulfilling piece of time.

One of the most impressive parts of this performance is when they all come in together at the beginning of Feel at 5:29 singing that F# sus 2 and its perfectly pitched. No reference tone from the piano, just that quick check around the room at 5:15, so subtle you'd miss it if you weren't paying attention. That's what perfect pitch looks like.
Became absolutely dumbfounded by this, so I had to search for this comment. That is absolutely insane.
But the bass played some reference notes and she followed with her voice...is that what you’re referring to?
Whisker Whippers ™️ True. At 5:14 you can hear the bass barely play the chord , while a singer hums the arpeggio. But still incredible to hit that chord and make it almost ring. So impressive!
It's truly amazing how the human ear can do that! I was in a choir for more than 10 years, and sometimes when singing something we would use notes from the piece that came before as references if we had to start with difficult chords. It worked (almost) every time xD

Honestly Tiny Desk is incredible. They can get a better mix with a live recording than I get get with months of finessing

Jacob Collier is one of the most brilliant minds alive when it comes to harmony and melody. His understanding of music, and as a result respect garnered from the heavy hitters, is beyond under appreciated. I wish nothing but the best for him!
he's great, but literally everyone who knows about jacob collier is constantly jerking him off about how great he is
