      @@disndat1000 That would be an awesome content to watch - which equipment they use, who is behind the mix and how they mix and master it. I believe it would be somehow similiar to mixing an orchestra, but the wide variety of instruments makes it 1000 times harder. I think they usually just record these live sessions (several of them) and then take the best one, but with no overdubs, so it must be prepared very carefully. Also the cinematography is top notch. Hands down to their techs/backstage!.

    Fun facts: two of the backup singers are sisters, the third is Sput's (the drummer with the sunglasses) sister, and all three of them are former members of God's Property, a gospel choir founded by Sput's mother. Amongst the choir's band members were Sput himself and Shaun Martin.

    Can you imagine the incredible puzzle of getting all the musicians together to practice all this, setting up all the gear on the live sound side (all the cables and routing and speakers so they can hear each other), then routing all the recording cables, getting all the levels right for each other and for the recording, then adding lighting and camera equipment?!

    Collier to me is quite probably the greatest all around musician of this generation. Don't shoot me just yet. Think about the effortless way he plays EVERY instrument (other vids) plus sings incredibly well, and his ear for harmonizing with those substitution and accidental chords he uses is other worldly. Then there's the intricate rhythms. His talent rises to the level of a Mozart in my opinion. He's only 18 years old and the fact that Quincy Jones is singing on his video should give you a flag as to the importance of this kid. He is the future I think.

    Ok, so I've watched this video at least 20+ times in the past six years... and tonight I got to see Jacob Collier perform live at the Majestic Theater in Detroit... and he played this song in his set. It was like a cosmically joyous punch in my solar plexus... and I loved every second of it. Another big bucket list item checked off: I saw Jacob perform live, in front of me... and it was truly wonderful. But after I came home and began the long process of winding down from such an experience, I knew I had to revisit this video. Because this captures a truly miraculous point in time. Yes, I'll say it. This performance was a miracle, and we all get to revisit and witness it again whenever we want. I'm so grateful for that. Thank you, Jacob; thank you, Snarky Puppy; thank you TH-cam. You've no idea how important this will always be to me. Truly makes life worth living.

    I've listened to it many times and the best realization is how great michael league does what he does. At the beginning of the whole vamping section right before jacob collier's solo, michael league keeps a constant steady pulse before the percussion section drummers and all join him in keeping time (and also in the intro with the drone of eighth notes coming from the synth or something...). Throughout all of the cymbal flourishes, synth effects, and all of the beautiful unorganized connection into collier's solo, he manages to keep the whole ensemble together with a little more than 4 or 5 notes in a steady rhythm. If you listen closely, you can hear him. It's not only until the percussion section joins him, he has more freedom to change up what he's playing and if you wanna be exact, he syncopates his parts more and makes them more groovy and complicated but not too complicated. Out of all of the craziness, technical, and mind-boggling parts, his role in this song is the best part out of all of the parts in the ensemble in my opinion. I've come to respect Michael League on a very different level than most other musicians.

    • @1997jankuschef

    • @uubuuh
      @uubuuh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Exactly so! And here League adds in even more than his usual leader/player magnificence - being some of the nastiest bass unison parts, with the tuba. I think this is very innovative - another example is the session with Knower, he does unison with Cory's moog bass to awesome effect. This unison dimensionalizes the bass, in the sense of accessing funk space a la P-Funk/Bootsy - bass is a habitable place completely evidenced by two players locked in identically on diverse instruments. You hear it and it makes your face go funny, and I for one want in.

      Personally I think it's really fascinating having a visionary-level genius working specifically in the realm of pop fusion; we got enough jazz piano prodigies already 😆 It's been too long since we had someone new on the scene like Stevie Wonder, someone with an incredible musicality, a deep understanding of harmony, and a desire to make pop bangers rather than modern/experimental jazz. Pop has been stale and lifeless for so long that I feel like we all just started thinking pop music _had_ to be stale, lifeless, and manufactured.

    How they can get that many players all playing on top of each other without it going to mush is beyond me. What a joy to listen to!

    Musical prodigy for the ages, Jacob Collier meets Snarky Puppy. An atomic future bomb of music. Did anyone see any sheet music? I didn't, Wha? Just a room full of musical mastery! Amazing. Beyond the beyond

    i think this is by far the best arrangement of Don't You Know..... every single one of the musicians is so perfectly locked into the pocket and it flows so beautifully.... I think Collier wrote this to be played with Snarky Puppy

      Spot on. It's like his album version was a demo to send to Michael in preparation for this (though I'm not sure which came out first, now I think about it).

      @@MrConnor6A1 I'd have to agree. This is a super rare case of a live Jacob version being even better than his recorded masterpieces. A bit of sacred jazz history in these 10 minutes imho

      @@lalaricky1 I like that characterisation of this performance. This video touches me more than any other of his works - and that's REALLY saying something. I've stopped listening to it so much lately simply because it overwhelms me emotionally. Kept for special occasions now!
