Canada lore incoming: Prince Edward Island, while being more densely populated than most provinces, is still mostly farmland and remote beaches. Their capital city only has a population of 40 thousand. Also, there isn't much French influence in Cape Breton or PEI, most of that bleeds from Quebec into New Brunswick and doesn't reach any further.
So, most of Alvvays is influenced by Scottish tradition from Cape Breton and rural maritime Canadian culture in general.

Hi prof. Skye! Camera Obscura's keyboardist Carey Lander has died of Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in 2015. I was really heartbroken to learn about it since I started listening to the band the past year or so. The band hasn't released any albums since 2013 and she'd been battling cancer since 2011 or so.

Great insights shared Prof. Like you I'm a Prof (from Australia: field of cultural studies / media and communication), recently getting back into contemporary music and trying to branch out more from my tastes grounded in my formative music listening from the 1980s and 1990s (Talking Heads; Television; Smashing Pumpkins; Smiths; The Police; Prince; Joy Division; Sonic Youth; My Bloody Valentine etc) and my listening of course to earlier classic rock and pop (Led Zep, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dylan, Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Bowie, Radiohead (through the 90s). Anything much past that have dabbled in The National; Bon Iver; Fleet Foxes; Father John Misty; Sufjan Stevens; Big Thief). Your videos are proving to be incredibly helpful as something of a guide as I spread my musical taste and appreciation horizons.
I've watched your vid with Ro Ramdin on Quadeca's Didn't Mean to Haunt You, incredibly enlightening and as a result I've given that album a good 4 or so listens through now. It has some special qualities I'm still getting my head and ears around. Also helping me to start listening to and getting genres such as Hip-hop / rap that I've never really got but want to. I've just turned 57 and decided I didn't want to become out of touch with the cultural and emotional life impact that music has. Anyway, just a thank you really as i'm finding this channel both insightful and inspiring.
I love the Alvvays album, their distinctive take on that shoegaze My Bloody Valentine sound is really worth listening to and I've enjoyed spending time in that soundscape. Pressed is so Smith's influenced, but not in a limiting, derivative way. My interpretation: the lyrics are kind of functioning also as a meta comment on the relationship to the Smiths ('And if i could retrace it, I'd match the steps we took to merely recreate it' etc). There's something here in the tone of the lyrics implied about discomfort with that connection (perhaps with where Morrissey has ended up in his thinking and a distancing from that). Also the refusal to apolgise at the end , the defiance in that ('And I won't apologize for something I'm not sorry fo'r), perhaps could be listened to as a refual to apologise for that Smith's influnce :). Great line, so Morrissey in phrasing and timing, but refusing at same time to apologise for that Smith / Morrisey influence. Just one possible take /listen.

Just went to their concert in Brazil last sunday. Didn't realize until then how much they sounded like the Smiths! So enticing. Appreciate them even more now.
For me tho, their angelical singing is very reminiscent of Cocteau Twins - not bad too!

Alvvays are the only band I’ve seen live in recent times ( I’m old) They’re the only modern band who aren’t sterile, shallow and overproduced. Melodic songs, talented nice people, great to watch and Molly is everything.?❤❤❤❤

I couldn’t help but relate to your feelings on musicians who look like or are similar to yourself. It’s hard to get past the ego sometimes, but in Alvvays’ case it is worth it.

This is an amazing review! I love how in depth you go into where artists are from, the cultures they’re apart of, and how that influences their music. An album you that I would love to hear your thoughts on is Viewfinder Vol.2 by Sam Gellaitry. Technically a mixtape and not an album, but I think Gellaitry has put out some of the most interestingly produced dance music in a while! He’s a dj and producer from Scotland who just recently started to release music with his vocals. Very creative and unique sounding pop/dance record.

some great 2022 albums I haven't seen you review yet:
    leroy - Dariacore 3... At Least That's What I Think It's Called?
amaii - I've Seen Better Days (its considered a mixtape, but i think it has a proper amount of cohesion that makes it worthwhile)
Vylet Pony - Can Opener's Notebook: Fish Whisperer (trust me, you don't have to be a brony to love this one)
    Weiland - Vices
quinn - I'm Going Insane (i prefer this mixtape to her self titled album that also came out this year, but you might prefer the album)
Teen Su!cide (censored to avoid youtube flags, which might put you off from reviewing it, but i would be remiss to leave this out) - honeybee table at the butterfly feast

one album you missed that is worth checking out in my opinion is Heart Under by the irish band Just Mustard. It's also shoegaze (and mbv influenced), but kind of darker than something like alvvays, plus there are some post-punk elements as well. an atmospheric listen with powerful female vocals that rise out from the wall of sound in such a beautiful contrast.
