I was listening to her song "anything" from her 2020 solo album and I realized there is a line "dragon in the new warm mountain / didn't you believe in me?" on the bridge. I came back here to drop this and I still have no clue what it means, but I am even more fascinated.

Damn, I was surprised to hear Little Things was a miss for you. For me it perfectly captures the tension of some of Big Thief's most intense songs (real love, not, parralels etc). It feels like emotion spilling out in every direction. It also weirdly sounds like the memory of a song, or being trapped a dream. It balances ethereality and tangibility in the way her lyrics often do.

I'm so glad you reviewed this album. Big thief is probably my favorite group since I started actively listening to music again in 2018 after checking out for over 30 years. This might be their best album, which is saying a lot considering the quality of all their work. It's probably cheating a bit for me to say they're my favorite group, being that they are so in my wheelhouse of music I loved growing up. That being the folk rock of the time like Dylan, Neil Young and so many others that I loved and still love. They are very much in that tradition and yet completely of this time, which I must say, makes me very happy. Listening to this album fills me with a sense of beauty, wonder, stillness openness and peace ( Thats very hippie of me isn't it). I thought your insights about how to make a comparison to Dylan without all the baggage was, right on. Wonderful review. Live forever until you die.

The name of the album is "Dragon* New Warm Mountain I Believe In You", but a great review nonetheless

Another thing which might add some backstory to the lyrics is that Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek were once married.

I don't own any egg shakers but you've convinced me. Great review. Hope you check out Big Thief's back catalogue. You're gonna find a lot of amazing music done in such a short period of time. I've never been as overwhelmed by how an already incredible band has only increased both the quality and quantity of their music.

I cry every time I hear this album, from the very first song lol. Something about it.... If they'd dropped a few songs this would've been a 10/10 imo. Will def keep an eye on Big Thief!

Dear Professor Skye, I really enjoy your reviews these days, and I was wondering if you could do some reviews for classic albums as well. I would love love love to see you talk about my favourite album Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Is that something you could imagine doing, or is your plan to rather review new albums for now?

Buck is from Texas, not Brooklyn. Brooklyn is where the band formed.

I just found this account and i love your take on Big Thief’s and Lenkers music. If you could please do their album Capacity and Masterpiece and specifically the songs Not and Pretty Things. These songs have affected me so much and i really want your perspective on them. You dive so deep and it helps me understand so much

I remember coming back to your "songs" review a few times, was so happy to see your buck review & this was the icing on the cake! Check out the song "Not" if you wanna see the extent of her gritty voice

I like your "Plane of Love" Neil Young song! Great review, Professor Skye. I listened to this record (have never really listened to this band before but have heard the buzz about them) and liked very much about it, though agreed with you it was too long....but kind of like a greasy spoon restaurant who serves nice generous portions really start questioning this line of critique (too many songs) of mine that I had. I think you are right that the lyrics are usually very well written and provocative. The idea about death is quite resonant even though - or maybe because- we all think it and dang-it she made it in simple yet not showy rhyme and meter! But lots of other more interesting ideas too. I agree that the drumming is quite cool. Could not put my finger on why but you articulated it perfectly and humorously; that idea of drummers loving to hear themselves put their stamps on things....continually...continuously....throughout. But he does not....very nice beats and very restrained to serve the song. Finally at the end of the album, I found myself questioning can I listen to her voice this much (and thus should I buy the record/CD?). I also agree with you that there are too many songs that are not really songs in the classic sense of songs needing to have more than just one part....maybe a chorus or gasp....middle eight/bridge.....not really happening. Still somehow it is generally a good album. I will I think get use to the timbre of her voice (a very personal taste in what we like and what we do not). I hear a bit of Fleetwood Mac in a few of their songs. Otherwise pretty original band this. Thanks for the post! Keep up the great work! Hope you recover fully!
