I feel like whenever people say "Where are the 2D games" they forget about......the 2D games. Y'know like Advance 1-3, Rush and Rush Adventure, the 3DS versions of Colours and Generations, Pocket Adventure. But NO! Let's focus on Sonic 4 cause it's bad and Sonic Mania cause it's the "FirSt GoOd SoNIc GaMe IN 15 YeARs."

Not many people know about obscure ones like pocket adventure for the Neo Geo. Sonic mania might not have been the best sonic game in 15 years to some, but it is factually the most successful sonic game in 15 years.
Reminds me of someone who was bragging on how Classic Sonic never had a bad game because he was fundamentally perfect, only for someone to bring up Sonic Blast on the Game Gear. They said it didn't count naturally.

Nah now he sucks and is a joke. Was good for most of the 2000s but after 2007 sonic stopped being sonic. Even the classic games were shounen. They based the adventure games off the japanese lore because sonic was always meant to have that shounen vibe.

I mean even 8 year old me noticed the short cutscenes that were in sonic 3 that clearly told the story of sonic going on a new island with tails but while on his journey has to deal with some red dude that has a grudge against him and deal with Eggman.

Though with that said, there is a video of an IGN game reviewer who was stuck in cupheads tutorial level for at least five minutes... so there's definitely some game reviewers that probably have less brain cells than an 8 year old.
@NS 317 I emulated it and It's pretty fun! I would say that the Sonic and the secret rings party mode has better mini games and more variety in modes but I had fun playing both. Also in Sonic shuffle the AI is pretty op. They can see almost all the cards and do pretty well in mini games on the easy mode.

This is what the term was originally referring to, but some people misuse it to smear the adventure games even though they are great. The rough transition was the dry spell that it took for them to finally make a 3D game. The 3D games didn't start really tanking until I guess Shadow.

The reason people don't talk about them is because the phrase is, for some reason, specifically used when talking about Sonic Adventure (DX). It's very bizarre.
Every game has some rough edges when coming to 3D for the first time, but despite the weird glitches, bad face animations and some questionable boss choices the game gives so much freedom to approach levels that is fun and unreal, YOU, make your shortcuts on these games more often than not
Funny thing about the Garfield comparison; Garfield HAS had a compelling story before. Garfield: His Nine Lives is about the nine lives Garfield lives through, from the primordial soup to the distant future. And when his lives are all up, the higher beings that created him and Odie decide that since fate was so cruel to the both of them constantly, they give the pair their 9 lives back. It's an interesting story, at least for Garfield.
If you really think about it, Sonic kinda did. Ever since Sonic 3 & Knuckles, SEGA and Sonic Team have struggled to find a perfect 3D formula. Sonic was way different then other platforming characters, so it was even more difficult for them. First it was Sonic R, a racing game. Then there was the absolute development hell that was Sonic Xtreme (It’s a really long story). Then finally Sonic 3D Blast, which wasn’t even technically 3D. It was only until Sonic Adventure where they had found a good 3D formula for Sonic.
You know if those other shoddier 3d games for Sonic were more well known maybe SA1 would be better appreciated because they would understand how much it improved over those mediocre games.
the only way to make this better would be to refer to every character as "the hedgehog", tails the hedgehog, knuckles the hedgehog, rouge the hedgehog, everyone knows there are no other animals in the sonic franchise
That bit about exploration... been saying that for over a decade. People complain about no exploration, but the minute you give em gameplay about exploration, its a problem.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 Knuckles' speed in those stages is great because it lets you set the pace of the level. His speed is only high if you are able to maintain your speed and flow through the stages and his ability to do that at all allows good players to cover more ground. Its one of the core tenants of Sonic gameplay.
Sonic goes fast: "This game is just hold forward to win. Also I can't react in time!" Sonic doesn't go fast: "I thought the whole point was going fast! As you can see, Sonic is an inherently flawed concept and if you like it you have shit taste and are nostalgia blind and probably a furry." Add "Sonic Mania doesn't count because it's a rom hack made by stupid Sonic fans" for extra effect ;)
Well guess what? I went through a WHOLE STAGE without glitches in you guessed it, the apparent “glitch ridden game” SONIC ADVENTURE DX! I went through Amy’s Story, no problems! Tails’ Story, no problems! And even KNUCKLES’ Story. NO PROBLEMS.

Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast is a masterpiece. For the time, it was absolutely phenomenal and groundbreaking and playing the Dreamcast version today, It 100% holds up. The ports of Adventure are awful though

And when you look at these statements together, well, it tells you something about game journalists you probably already knew.
On the other hand, when I hear someone argue the phrase "Sonic had a rough transition to 3D" is flat out untrue, all I can think is "Are you familiar with the entirety of the Sega Saturn's lifespan?"

@@shyguymike 3D blast wasnty 3D, it had pre-rendered sprites on a 2.5D background and Sonic Jam is less of a game and more of a fun little hub world that was the proof of concept for Sonic adventure.
The reason people don't talk about them is because the phrase is, for some reason, specifically used when talking about Sonic Adventure (DX). It's very bizarre.

Every game has some rough edges when coming to 3D for the first time, but despite the weird glitches, bad face animations and some questionable boss choices the game gives so much freedom to approach levels that is fun and unreal, YOU, make your shortcuts on these games more often than not

Funny thing about the Garfield comparison; Garfield HAS had a compelling story before.
Garfield: His Nine Lives is about the nine lives Garfield lives through, from the primordial soup to the distant future. And when his lives are all up, the higher beings that created him and Odie decide that since fate was so cruel to the both of them constantly, they give the pair their 9 lives back. It's an interesting story, at least for Garfield.

If you really think about it, Sonic kinda did. Ever since Sonic 3 & Knuckles, SEGA and Sonic Team have struggled to find a perfect 3D formula. Sonic was way different then other platforming characters, so it was even more difficult for them. First it was Sonic R, a racing game. Then there was the absolute development hell that was Sonic Xtreme (It’s a really long story). Then finally Sonic 3D Blast, which wasn’t even technically 3D. It was only until Sonic Adventure where they had found a good 3D formula for Sonic.
You know if those other shoddier 3d games for Sonic were more well known maybe SA1 would be better appreciated because they would understand how much it improved over those mediocre games.

That bit about exploration... been saying that for over a decade. People complain about no exploration, but the minute you give em gameplay about exploration, its a problem.

@@AkameGaKillfan777 Knuckles' speed in those stages is great because it lets you set the pace of the level. His speed is only high if you are able to maintain your speed and flow through the stages and his ability to do that at all allows good players to cover more ground. Its one of the core tenants of Sonic gameplay.
Sonic goes fast: "This game is just hold forward to win. Also I can't react in time!"
Sonic doesn't go fast: "I thought the whole point was going fast! As you can see, Sonic is an inherently flawed concept and if you like it you have shit taste and are nostalgia blind and probably a furry."

Sonic did have a rough transition. Sonic 3D blast and the Saturn games struggled to have an actual 3D sonic game
Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast is a masterpiece. For the time, it was absolutely phenomenal and groundbreaking and playing the Dreamcast version today, It 100% holds up. The ports of Adventure are awful though
The sad part is, this is far from inaccurate from what clickbaiting attention seekers/gaming journalists would say unironically
