7:06 It gets worse. Not only does Sonic eat a regular chililess hot dog in Sonic X, he also ate a bowl of chili in another episode. Meaning Sonic ate both hot dogs and chili in the Sonic X continuity but never thought to put them together.

I don't know why they chose chili dogs exactly, but irl hedgehogs are obligate carnivores (they strictly eat meat, in their case it's comprised of mainly insects and scavenged meat). Chili dogs are definitely meaty and the beans add extra protein, so I like to think it's a meaty treat that naturally appeals to him.
Can almosy guarantee the people who came up with this did not go through that level of thinking, but this is just a reasoning I like to think about! I love hedgehogs just as much as I love Sonic

@@ameliathehedgehogfairy9386 While there's not been a lot of consistent info on that, most people generally agree that they're insectivores, which is a subclass of carnivores. Bugs are just a type of meat, generally with a lot more chitin. Some hedgehogs do snack on fruits and vegetables, but their digestive track doesn't really extract nutrition from them that well. It's kinda like how some cats will snack on non-meaty things, but 95% of their diet should be meat.

I swear I heard somewhere that it's because chili dogs have a lot of calories and protein, something sonic uses a lot of. My best guess is it's portable, not requiring a bowl or dish.

I always thought sonic liking chilli dogs was joke of sorts where chilli is known to give people the shits otherwise known as the runs. As it gives people the runs maybe the devs used that play on words since sonic runs fast

@@inkchariot6147 well, in the restaurants defense, it did come 41 years before Sega. Also, there would be a LOT of paperwork and contractual shit to deal with. Also, it wouldn't be a partnership because Sonic (restaurant) makes WAAAY more money than Sega right now. So one is buying the other (spoiler, it ain't Sega). So the only way for this partnership to happen is a sponsorship in the Sonic movie or Sonic Rangers

out of all the cool stuff archie introduced, shard the metal sonic, scourge, silver as a timecop, the only thing to make it into the mainline games was sonic's chilli dog addiction
To be fair Gemerl in the IDW comics is essentially Shard in everything but name. But yes Scourge and Silver in Time Adventures would be cool too

I tried making a Chilli Dog with Hot Dog Bread, a sausage, Chilli (obviously) and mashed potatoes. But I exaggerated the Chilli and the things got TOO spicy. But it was delicious!

It's one of the only concepts taken from outside of the games and became a mainstay. A lot of people tend to forget that, despite many fans out there irrationally disliking anything else from other canons. I guess tasty food are an exception to that. *shrugs*

I remember that when I was a kid I didn't understand English yet, so when I saw chilly dogs on Sonic games I used to think it was just a Choripan (A food similar to a hotdog that is just a chorizo inside a piece of bread with a lot of spices)
He let me know that they were introduced into the Japanese Canon in Sonic Advanced 3, but never explained why they were picked to begin with

I made a vegan version of Sonic's recipe for me and my husband (only without barbecue sauce) and i absolutely love it, it's one of my favorite recipes now

I always thought it was some kind of inside joke with the Sonic drive in's which are world famous for their chilli dogs.
You see, chilli dogs actually make their first appearance in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog in its first episode.
Coconuts was selling Chillidogs. Well, as a trick, but still.
I knew that this was going to be covered on this channel eventually thanks for discussing this topic I also love chili dogs and the fact that sonic's actual favorite food is chili dogs makes me like him more wonder what made them think chili dogs would be Sonic's ideal choice for his favorite food
My theory is that a writer really liked them or maybe had them for lunch around that time and decided to include them lol

Great video. I just wondering if u could confirm something for me: it’s my understanding that the sonic archie comic was based on development materials for the dic cartoons. So I’m assuming that chili dogs were mentioned as Sonic’s fav food in the Satam or Adventures bible and that’s why chilidogs first appearance was in the archie comic. If anyone could confirm this I’d be appreciative
That’s actually true. The Archie comic got notes from the SatAm Bible (ken penders, yea I know, mentioned it years ago). Since Adventure was also in development and aired first, the early comic took a comedic tone but with the SatAm characters, with beta versions of Sally and Rotor named Boomer.
So technically the chili dog obsession comes from the SatAm/Adventures Bible and character notes, but the Archie comic was released first so it gets the prize for 1st mention of chili dogs

I did this recipe today, the sweetness is countered by the salty beef hotdog( I wrapped bacon on my hot dogs so maybe that helped too.) Overall a solid meal I'm glad I tried out.

I know the answer might be obvious beef or pork or something, and I might be over thinking it but what kind of beef, like do regular cows exist in sonic, I know other animals do. Chili Dogs in Japanese Sonic came earlier than that. Sonic and his friends occasionally snack on Chili Dogs in season 1 of Sonic X, and that series came out a year before Sonic Advance 3.
