  • Garmin just released their new top of the line do everything watch with their sharpest AMOLED display with the latest greatest software advancements, improved HR tracking, and even a built in flashlight. Apple just announced some of what’s coming to WatchOS 10 for their top of the line do everything, durable Apple Watch Ultra. So with all of these big new announcements, it got me thinking . . . How does the Apple Watch Ultra compare to the all new Garmin Epix Pro?

I have owned both a Garmin Epix 2 and an AW Ultra. I love Garmin's rugged Military look and toughness, they also had the best leather strap. However, the AWU is better FOR ME because of the extra features I use all the time and the fitness aspects are good enough for my needs, sleep tracking, running, and walking. The additional features that are better (again FOR ME) are unlocking my Mac, Unlocking my iPhone if I am not entirely looking directly at it, paying for everything while out (a much easier process, double tap one button), turning up music playing from my phone or through my headphones, skipping tracks, podcasts. Answering calls while driving, setting timers with my voice, turning lights on and off with a tap, while driving getting turn-by-turn feedback vibrating on my wrist when I need to listen to the GPS voice or when I need to turn, using it as the Apple TV remote to change shows and apps on the TV. There are probably more that i take for granted. Again this is my opinion and my experience, i am not going to get all tribal about it.

I agree. I like that you reiterated the “For Me” part. Some times this comment area feels like a religious holy war of brand loyalty and I appreciate level headed comments like this. Garmin does some things really well but it’s also cool that I can open my garage with my AW Ultra. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It shouldn’t be so hard to use the original apple tv remote and you can burn extra calories for this extra effort. I really can’t understand what is the point of using a watch for tv remote. All of the stuff you listed are just null for me. I prefer and i expect a way longer battery life from such an expensive device.
You can do the most of the things you mentioned above with the Garmin as well such as turn by turn navigation vibration and changing songs. Yes, i’m in the IOS ecosystem as well but come on, Apple is neither Ultra nor a good sports watch. The battery life is pathetic and the design reminds me of a calculator rather than a watch.

Really well done! Glad you mentioned Garmin Connect. That's another key difference that's often overlooked and is so much better than using a patchwork of apps for Apple.

Just got the Epix Pro 51mm to replace the Forerunner 745 and it's absolutely awesome. I've had the AWU for a while now and love it too. It's been my main watch on my left wrist while I only used the FR745 on my right wrist for running and workouts. Now that I've added the Epix Pro, it seems I'll be wearing both constantly. Hey, we have two wrists; why not adorn both with these technical marvels? Haha
The AWU has integrated so seamlessly and thoroughly with my Apple ecosystem for both work and personal usage that I can't do without it now. But, for my running, workouts, and long outdoor excursions, the Epix Pro leaves the AWU in the dust. It's not even close. The battery life on the Epix Pro 51mm is phenomenal for an AMOLED display. I have it on always-on mode with little power saving stuff turned on and it seems I'll easily get two full weeks before having to charge. Having used the FR745 for a while, I'm hooked on all the data and metrics that Garmin watches provide through the Connect app and online.
Well, to me, the AWU is an "apple" and the Epix Pro is an "orange", I guess. Obviously, they share similarities as smartwatches, but one is geared more towards mainstream usage with excellent all-round smartwatch features and good fitness/health features and the other is geared towards the serious athlete and sports enthusiast with the best cutting-edge fitness/health features and decent general purpose smartwatch features. And it seems it will stay that way for a while. Apple will try to catch up on fitness/health but Garmin will keep on working very hard to stay ahead while trying to catch up with Apple in other general purpose areas. Competition is good. I'll keep and use both. 😀

@@braddavister137 The AWU is a nice Apple ecosystem endpoint and great for not having to have a phone with me all the time.

@@CanInelli it will only really conflict when you do a workout as it will show two workouts, one by Apple and one by garmin. I have a myzone and that will show as a third workout sometimes. I try to only use the garmin for workouts though and then wear both out and about. Mainly because of the cellular feature on the Apple Watch for safety reasons at work.

    • @theghostofpcs2391

@@SirCharlesLikesChurros Even though I wasn't really interested in the Epix 2 (the regular one, the pro is way too expensive), I did take it into consideration, because it was only a few euro more than the Fenix 7 ss. I wear an apple watch 6 together with my garmin 24/7, so I had a good idea about what I like/dislike with both MIP and OLED screens. I love my aw, but the light coming from the screen tends to wear me down at times, especially in the evenings, when surroundings are darker. I also feel it looks more like a toy. I love my watch not getting in my way, unless I interact with it. Even with the backlight on, the F7 doesn't feel as intrusive. And for the Epix specifically, the black background during activity was an absolute deal breaker for me. From experience, I just find it easier to see what I need in a glance, when it's black on white. The watch looks absolutely stunning, but I'm not interested at the moment.

I had been looking into garmin watches for a long time (maybe about 2 years). IMO its what you are used too. If you are an apple person then the ultra is for you. I got the ultra on the first release date and i loved it until the point that even 3 day battery life is sometimes not enough and maybe thats just me not remembering to charge it😂. About a month ago i finally caved in and got the fenix7x sapphire solar and although it was a good watch , it wasn’t an Apple Watch ultra. I returned it and appreciated my ultra more then before because it gave me the answer that i needed.

I have the epix pro 51mm and apple watch ultra. I just ran a 50K with both. They both lasted the entire run, the garmin had many days left of battery, but AW had 20% battery left. I was using stryd app on AW. Here is why the Garmin wins. I have had AWU "crash" during two long runs and I lost my run data. I have never had a garmin software crash during a run (I've owned dozens of garmin over the years).
I would say epix pro 51mm is the best fitness watch I have ever owned. Build quality, screen clarity, battery life, hrt sensor, accuracy. It's been a long time since I've found what I would call "a perfect device."

Mostly agree with your points - the Ultra is a great smartwatch and so-so sports watch the Garmins are the best sport watches but are meh at other things. I keep switching between the Ultra and the 965 and the Epix 2. Was a long time Garmin user till the Ultra came out. I love the functionality of the Ultra (since I have mainly Apple devices) and love not having to lug the phone around on rides. However, the Ultra is frustrating as I need to use at least three different aps to get the same type of functionality from a fitness standpoint that the Garmin provides. The aps data don't always seem to matchup and sometimes don't make any sense given the activity or recovery I have had plus they don't always work that cleanly with the Ultra's hardware. I mainly cycle and the new OS 10 features sound interesting but I wish Apple would allow the Ultra to work with ANT+ and broadcast heartrate to my bike comp. I still have to remember to pop on the chest or armband monitor and I really wish Apple would allow you to disable the touch screen during workouts. The Garmin is great as a fitness tool. I love the metrics especially the training load and the impact your workout has had (or not had - I love when Garmin tells you your workout was shit) on your fitness. The Garmin's are great training tools as they actually track and provide feedback on training and recovery. Plus the battery lasts - the Ultra is decent but I have races that could go 14+ hours I don't want to have to gimp the Ultra (low power mode) to be able to make sure it lasts a long race. I do miss how much more useful the Ultra is for other than workout stuff. So for now will keep watching content and switching between lol.

The pros and cons of epix vs awu leaves me unable to decide on an upgrade. 6x is a lousy smartwatch, but good at activities, battery, etc. awu is a great smartwatch but apparently not to great for activities. So I’m telling myself, again, to wait for the awu 3. No idea if there are any major garmin releases due this year. My feeling though is that Apple will win in the end because of more frequent software updates, a bigger ecosystem and they are starting with the smartwatch piece solved, which I sense is the harder thing to do. From workouts not being interrupted to using the map while on a walk to the insane battery life the 600 bucks spent on technology that was available in 2019 just blew me away and kind of demonstrated that the Ultra Running Explorer Deep Diver myth Apple is marketing their watch too, is just that. I have been using the Apple Watch Ultra since the day it came out. I use it mainly to track my open water swim sessions. I swim every single day out in the sea. Unfortunately AWU has been acting weird time to time. It's not that reliable in terms of GPS accuracy during open water swimming. What I mean is; out of every 10 swim sessions, 2-3 of them gets wrong distance and bad GPS points. However there are also times when AWU works fantastic, GPS accuracy is spot on. So I don't know why it's been doing this tbh. Seems like a software bug that Apple isn't fixing. Yesterday I swam 7000 meters, AWU thinks I did 8500 meters. But before that I did a 4k, and it measured 4k exact with perfect tracking. It's really annoying to jump in the water and not know whether AWU will provide correct data today or not.. I think they're both great options. Wish my garmin had more smartwatch features but I'm very happy with it. Garmin definitely is a cut above on health metrics and activity tracking. I love that it has automatic rep counting when lifting weights and a very accurate auto assigned set type (i.e. Front squat, bench press etc). You can also edit all that. One thing that isn't in Garmins favor though is their OS. It still retains the design philosophy of low res MIPS displays (transflective memory in pixel, which is best IN sunlight). Those displays needed bright colors to be more visible in lower light and the low resolution required simple icons and menus. Now that they are moving more and more watches to hi res amoled screens (their epix, Fenix, and forerunner lines all have them now) they really, really need to redesign their layout to take advantage of the bigger higher res displays. The whole layout/formatting is a holdover from a different tech with different requirements for readability. It looks quite dated in my opinion, and doesn't use the large size and res of the amoled like apple. All that being said, I still prefer garmin for the physical buttons (touch inputs are strictly optional) and excellent activity and health metrics. One things for sure though, apple is finally giving garmin some decent competition and garmin's devices are overpriced. Hopefully Apple pushes them to put more smartwatch features and lower the price.

2:00 haven't garmin watches generally been multi-band for years? everyone's talking like this is some new amazing feature, but you could switch on GPS + Galileo etc on watches from years ago.
Also, i wish it'd be talked about more how smaller battery life means a shorter device life. Say a Li-ion battery gets 500 cycles (as a high-estimate at that) before being too degraded - if you're charging once every 2 weeks that's plenty of years of use, but if you're charging every 3 days, so 120 times a year, you're maybe getting 4 years out of an $800 watch. In theory as long as it's under 5 years they have to offer you an out-of-warranty solution to that (at least under EU law), but tbh more people should take this into consideration who don't

    • @mlegrand

This new GPS chipset (as of about a year ago) allows for two different frequencies which means that the chip can connect to two different types of GPS satellite systems at the same time. It's a little different that what Garmin had before.
Good call on the battery life. Right at about 2 years these lithium ion batteries start to degrade.

Battery Life was never an issue as I throw both apple watches on the charger every morning when I shower and by the time I am ready to leave out for work /play they are ready to roll. Just sent my AWU back and slapped my Garmin back on. AWU is still a toy. You need subscriptions to get like half of the info the Garmin gives you for free basically but then can’t even run a 2h run and listen to music at the same time because the battery will die halfway through. The action button is useless most of the time and try to use a touchscreen when you sweat like pig after a hard workout. Or try to exactly time a swim when you have to unlock the screen prior to any action. The Garmin I can use without even looking at. The AW I need special gloves or remove them from my hands just to use it outside in winter. Apple should give the AWU a real battery and make it an actual „ultra“ watch with button nav. Imho the AWU is too expensive for what it really is.
My two cents: the AWU is a high class smart watch with the basics in sport and the Garmin is a high class sports watch with like the most basic smart watch features.

For me the Epix removes all the reasons I own a Garmin such as VERY LONG battery life and solar charging in the 7x Solar Sapphire. Ironically, the 7x is easier to see outside than the Epix as the sun actually helps the screen. I also wear an Apple Watch Ultra as the technology is truly light years ahead. The Garmin is like an Atari, complete with sounds, while the AWU is like a PS4. I wear my 7x because of the health metrics such as stress and body battery. Also, if I have no cell reception, the Garmin keeps tracking. The Apple Watch is great for receiving phone calls, using Siri to schedule meetings or look something up, get taps from my maps app while driving so I don't miss a turn and much more. So sadly, I have to wear two expensive watches to get all the functionality I want.

Hi, I hv been using FR945 for last over 3 yrs & Apple watch 7 for over one & half yrs. The information, FR946 provides is awesome compared to Apple watch. Apple watch doesn’t provide barometer reading. 3rd party apps are totally inaccurate & unreliable for barometer reading wherein FR945 provides almost correct pressure. Hv compered barometer/elevation for over two weeks. I believe, with Garmin watch, one can predict weather through observation of pressure change.
FR945 provides aerobic & anaerobic effect, no of counts of weight, push ups, squats, or any repeat exercise which are missing with Apple watch. FR945’s Body battery & sleep scores are brilliant. I have observed that if you do an exercise before going to bed or have alcohol late in evening, the next day, your body battery wouldn’t charge properly & your sleep score would be reduced than a normal day. Apple is totally missing on this feature.
I believe Apple watch still in generation-1 wherein Garmin is at gen-4 or 5 especially with fitness features.
Despite my love for Garmin, I must admit that using Garmin as well as Apple watch just confuses me more & more. After a week of using FR945, I get bored & then use apple watch 7 & keep repeating😅 . This left my FR945 without adequate data for the period I use apple watch.
