    I will describe my experience here, you people can judge me. I was using an Apple watch ultra for my running and strength training for 21k and I was very upset with the confusion of the Apple Watch to force me to use third-party apps to configure my interval runs and consolidate my information at the end of the day. I sold my Apple watch Ultra and move back to Garmin, bought a Forerunner 965. The out-of-the-box experience was excellent, I can connect my account with my trainer app on my iPhone and download my interval runs automatically. Better training status, better battery. I don't care about LTE or phone functions on my wrist. I want my training data being collected and consolidate efficiently.

      I will not judge you but I will judge Apple.
      What you described in nothing special, especially it is "just" running.
      There is still no roadmap available from Apple in terms of their commitment to more serious semi professional weekend warriors, which I asspire to be one. :)

      Did you sell your Garmin because it can’t answer your phone call or reply message? You dumb people bought Apple Watch but expect it to work like a sports watch, yet you never expect Garmin to work like a true smart watch. You fail the watch for being this dumb, the watch didn’t disappoint you and it does what it’s designed for.

    Excellent summary and contrast. I think the Apple watch ultra looks to fulfill all the potential of what a smartwatch can be, and has fitness functions, while the Garmin is for competitive athletes or people serious about fitness, and has smartwatch functions. The garmin has many more metrics that track and analyze performance, and Garmin Coach and was a major reason for me to buy Garmin (not to mention the buttons). But the AWU looks much better from a UI perspective and can do a lot more phone things. Both great devices, but for fairly different purposes. The Garmin is probably narrower in its focus on fitness and advanced health/activity tracking. While the AWU is a mini phone.

    Deciding factor #7 in Garmin's favor is their excellent customer service. I've started with Garmin with Forerunner 310 and even then when my wife's Forerunner broke way out of warranty they replaced it for a small fee with a re-certified unit. It just happened to me when my Fenix 6x Saphire broke, almost 3 years since purchase and they are replacing it with a re-certified unit for $150. Those watches are awesome but also pricey and having an option to get a replacement past warranty keeps me as their customer.

    • @VernL4
      @VernL4 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yep, Garmin has replaced watches for me after the warranty has expired as well. Their customer service is top-notch! Apple's customer service, on the other hand, is non-existent. Problems with Apple devices only days after purchase and they were unwilling to help me. Garmin has earned a customer in me!

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It's great that they are replacing it for minimal cost but breaking after 3 years is a bit of a concern. If you are spending a lot of money on something, I want it to last longer than 3 years before failing.

    Adding Garmin Messenger to the current capabilities (inReach) would take away any issue related individual’s connectivity while you’re out on the field, and most importantly worldwide, no conditions, no limitations. Having or not the iPhone with you, at that point become an individual’s choice. This is what makes Garmin watches insuperable for appassionate runners. Both Fenix 7 and Epix have great compatibility with IR, straight from the watch!

      @Nyelands 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm curious, do you only wear the Garmin for training or also the rest of the time? I have an AW and an older Forerunner I'm thinking about upgrading. I have my eyes on the FR 965, but it is expensive and a little much if you don't wear it outside training and the AW does a better job there. Not sure I want to wear two watches.

    • @paolaroblesgil
      @paolaroblesgil 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Nyelands that is really a dilemma also for me. I'm currently using both, the Garmin with an extended band so I can use it on my biceps or ankle, but I agree with you that it's not the most practical thing. I really love the AWU capabilities as a smartwatch, but Garmin's analysis wearing it 24/7 is much more insightful. I don't want to lose the data that takes weeks to build like HRV status. It's not an easy decision and I understand your concern. I was even sleeping with both watches, which is crazy because both devices are big. I've decided to stop using the AWU for sleep even though syncing Connect to Apple Health does not transfer sleep stages. I'm sorry I don't have the answer for you. I will continue testing what's more convenient, but for now that's where I am.

    • @Nyelands
      @Nyelands 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@paolaroblesgil Sounds like we have the same dilemma. I was thinking what I would prefer if I had to chose one or the other. A great smartwatch with so so fitness tracking or a great fitness tracking watch with so so smartwatch functionalities. One thing I love is being able to go to the supermarket right after running, Garmin Pay will work for that. Then we have music and LTE being able to answer to text message or take a call. I use it sometimes, but rarely. It would be nice if you are on a longer run and if you're not going straight home after afterwards, maybe enjoying the sun somewhere and not feeling disconnected and feel like you have to go home to check your phone. At the same time do you really need all the smart functions and notifications or is it really more a stress factor. I don't usually listen to music while running, on rare occasions I do, but then I could bring my phone, or wear two watches. Haha! Sorry for the long message, just thinking out loud.

    Hi there, Dave! Quick question for you. Looking to get back into Garmin. Was considering the Epix Gen 2, as I cannot afford the pro. Thoughts on a watch that will soon be 2 years old? Honestly, I don’t train, I’m more of the every day exercise guy. But my old man eyes need the AMOLED screen, and the battery life is really one of the things that sells me on Garmin. I do use Maps, so that is actually kind of important to me. Also love round trip courses. Have also considered the 965, but I do love the look of the Epix. Hoping just for some advice. Thanks again! A very nice concise review of these watches. I my humble opinion the AWU and Apple Watches in general, including Samsung watches are trying to be a jack of all trades. For Apple it is about trying to capture the athletic market while still trying to cater to the non-athletic market. For Garmin it is all about the athletic market, which is obvious because they work on both mobile platforms. Apple has always been about drawing the customer into their ecosystem, hence it does not work on any other platform. That has been the negative factor in my opinion since I do not want to be tied down to one company and their ecosystem (i.e. "Apple Washed") as many people are prone to say. I have had Garmin and Samsung watches and my wife has an Apple Watch. I think the Garmin is the superior product since it works in both platforms and is factored to the athletic market. The Samsung and the Apple watches are just not there. The battery life on these watches is disappointing, especially using GPS or GPS while playing music as you run. I am glad that you did a very unbiased review as many reviews are biased, especially when it comes to Apple products.

      It can charge mid-activity but the charger is magnetic so it’s a little harder to situate in a backpack or running vest or the magnet will let go.

    I’ve just traded my Fenix 7 SS for an AW Ultra 2 and I cannot be more disappointed at the moment, the out of the box experience is just disappointing sadly. I regret it a lot. I mean, great hardware, but if the software and experience is no different from the standard AW… I don’t see the Ultra justified. I’m trying so hard to give it an opportunity but the desire of switching back is there. Great video as always!

    Hi there, I have a question about Apple Watch. Is there a way to measure rest time while doing intervals on the track with the Apple Watch ultra (using the action button)? I understand that I can set an interval workout with the workout app, but sometimes I just want to freestyle a workout. Right now when I press the lap button within the stopwatch app, it will only show me the total elapsed time. Is there a way to see how much time has passed since I pressed the lap button so I know when to start my next interval?
    PS. I do use the work outdoors app and I CANNOT use the action button to start a new lap which I thinks wastes the money that I spent to get that extra button ='(. This is why I specifically asked about the using the action button.

    I have both and wear both all the time - well, not the AWU when I go to sleep. To me, they are totally different kinds of watches. The AWU is an extension of my iPhone and another very useful and compact/mobile endpoint for my Apple ecosystem. For running and other sports activities, there is no comparison: it's the Garmin Epix Pro 51. Now, I have no need to take the phone with me on my runs, gym workouts, hikes, or whatever other physical activities. The AWU handles my phone calls, Messages, Apple Music, other general stuff and general Health info and the EP51 handles all the detailed sports and health-related data.
    They can each do some of what the other is best at, but not nearly as good. I also use the AWU with Stryd on my runs so that I can get another set of running data along with what EP51 is providing. So, to me, they are very complementary and I have two wrists, so why not both? I know that around $2K for both is a lot but is surely a lot less than luxury watches from the likes of Rolex, Omega, and Cartier, etc., a few of which I have and almost never wear except for a few stuffy social events every now and then when I have to wear a suit. I think both are great and love 'em. I have things set up so they don't overlap and each does what they are best at.

      do you wear them on both hands or on the same hand? Is it convenient?

    • @alexkhan2000
      @alexkhan2000 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nazar_ua I wear the AWU on my left wrist and the EP51 on my right. It's not inconvenient or uncomfortable at all. Before I got the EP51, I had the Forerunner 745 and wore it on my right wrist but only for running. Now, I consider EP51 the main watch although the AWU has pretty much replaced my iPhone for any outdoor activities as well as the gym.
      I don't even take the iPhone out with me when going out on short errands. The AWU has liberated me from having to take the phone wherever I go and that's a good feeling since I can take phone calls, receive and send texts, play my music library through the AirPods Pro 2, and handle a lot of the general phone stuff. I'm also using Siri and dictation a lot more now with the AWU when I didn't do that with the phone. It's so good to not have to have the phone with me all the time.

    Great review. I’ve had both and they are both great but the Apple Watch is basically a small phone which is great if you use it instead of your phone. If you run with a cellular Apple Watch you’ve basically got a phone on your wrist. You’re connected and you haven’t got a huge phone in your pocket. I settled with a Garmin because I can ride over 100 miles and I can run a bit and I use a Garmin for cycling. If that’s got a problem I have a Garmin on my wrist. The Garmin is a tool for training with a long battery life the Apple Watch is a small extension of a iPhone.

    I use to receive few calls and messages per week, if I'm doing sport I don't want to be disturbed at all, it's a moment only for me so I enjoy the lack of connection.

    Gave the 965 a shot but ended up back on my Ultra. Much like you said Dave, for 99% of people one watch or the other will suffice with a few adjustments.
    For me, it’s the LTE (on-call nurse who finds it handy to go on a run, but be able to quickly turn around if I’m called in). Yes, I could carry my phone, but prefer the convenience of being a phone call or text away from my wrist. Plus, there’s audible and podcasts which are bonuses.
