Your video was really helpful! Tattooed myself last night after practicing on the fake skin for months and I’m glad I put in all the work I did because I felt confident and it came out great! The first line took me a few tries to get the line in deep enough but after that it was fine. I wasn’t nervous at all but when I struggled with that first line I did get a bit shaky haha. I didn’t anticipate that so watching your video was a good heads up that that was normal. The pain was like my other tattoos honestly it was fine and after a few lines it was actually helpful to know I was getting the lines in to the same depth… it was sitting in the weird position to get to my ankle that was the worst ha. Thanks again! :)
Did my first tattoo on my left forearm. Slightly difficult on the side but I’m fairly happy with it! I’ve been challenging myself and this tattoo is mainly linework with minor shading. I found a way to position my arm while also stretching it with the hand I was tattooing with. Again mildly challenging and uncomfortable, but overall happy with the result. This channel has been my go to on my tattooing journey and can say that I’ve learned a lot!

I had to tattoo myself after getting a portrait tattoo. Tattoo artist really messed up the nose and had to fix the mouth. I stretched the arm with a clamp used for lamps...minus the lamp. I didn't put any lotion for a few days on that area. That part came off really easy with some slight scarring. Nothing too noticeable unless you look close. Was not perfect but very happy with the results.
I'm pro numbing sprays or creams. However I'm a firm believer when your doing your own first tattoo it should be done without numbing anything. So you know exactly how it feels and as a right of passage
I tattooed myself for the first time tonight using a lining needle after practising with fake skin doing lines waves circles and angles then I jumped in without stencils (freestyling it!) and they all look awesome. I did a treble clef, a moon and two hearts intertwined. Ankle one (the hearts) hurt a bit. I know you said don't do hand one but I found this video after the fact-Hand ones were actually awesome-moon on my mid finger and treble clef musical symbol was between thumb and first finger on back of the hand. They were all mini but I am super happy with them!
I straight up just went straight for practicing on my self, my right leg is gonna be a doodle sleeve. I felt the bet way to learn would to be just stick the middle into myself. I practice good sterile work ethic, I prep my workspace and self as if I were tattooing professionally in store. I'm not a tattoo artist. But it's better to remain in practice than out of it.
I saw this video too late! Didn't practice much on fake skin and then jumped straight to tattooing my own arm lol so I basically made all the mistakes But I don't regret it, they turned out ok. Watching this, I'm glad that tattooing doesn't feel painful to me, that certainly makes practicing easier
Love this video. Great advice. I definitely started the hard way. First one I did on myself was on my inside wrist. Lol. Then did thighs and more my forearm, and my ring finger. That was the hardest. You learn some ingenuity to be able to tattoo your own arms and hands.
Good advice and all, but as for myself, I started on myself with no practice ever, and now my whole body is covered except for my right arm. The progress is obvious, but they turned out pretty decent.
After a lot of fake skin practise I can confidently say I’m ready to tattoo myself, this video helped a lot! Is there a part two on the steps after you’ve finished ? Like a Wipe area/wrap/breakdown station explanation?
Did a couple practice pieces on fake skin then I did one on my thigh, started out small like you said and eventually covered my shin and the side of my calf with a couple of good size pieces and now few years later I have one leg almost covered and a couple of tatts on my other leg I need to add too🤣🤣
Just tattooed my upper knee last night, I had to blast some metal and bite a tongue depressor but it was a success! This’ll definitely teach you to be more gentle with you clientes 😅
Awesome channel:) What I find interesting about tattooing myself (been doing it for +10 years) was that it hardly hurts anything at all! I get so focused so I kind of just channel out the pain... But I do shake, especially when tattooing harder to reach areas! (Though the side of the ribs are quite the pain when I think about it haha)
Simple but very clean little tattoo! I enjoy tattooing myself. I've done several large tattoos on my left arm. Slowly filling it into a sleeve. Plan on doing a large skull on my shin tonight if I can get away from work early enough.
Love your vids...I can't practice on fake skin,,it's the way my mind works, I need thrown in at some depth and sink or swim...I am covered in pro tatts though so when I practice on myself it's small bits here and there and I'm totally self taught...really I only wanted to learn to shade in small gaps between pro tatts..I'm getting there..
thank you for such an informative video! i noticed that i happen to have the same machine as you, i was wondering if you could share the voltages you had the machine set to for each step of this process? i attempted my first tattoo on myself since getting this machine recently and i had to double line the whole thing because the end result was a bit scratchy.
Would you still recommend this to a young tattoo artist who is just starting out? I have people who would let me tattoo on them for practice as well as fake skin but for a teen would it be better to wait to be a full adult? I fully believe that I will become a tattoo artist and I want tattoos but should my first tattoo be something I do by myself?
I'm just beginning tattooing. I appreciate your knowledge and your non judgmental attitude. Huge respect to genuine souls - such as yourself. P.S. do I hear a Philly accent? I'm originally from Philly Texas now since 1996
What stuff are you wiping on your stencil lines before pulling each line. Is it Vaseline? Would of been cool if you showed the placing of the stencil as well
All I can say is I love your videos. I am considering getting myself into tattooing and your videos really help to clarify things. ❤ I would though have a question. Do you consider it wrong if a begginer "drives" machine on the skin first starting and not floating like you do? Keep up with the good work, you are awesome! 😊
Happy to come across this because I’m nervous as I’ve yet to even start practicing but I wanted to jump in head first, now I know better and I appreciated seeing your video it stopped me from most likely making a huge lifelong error lol!!
Another soul saved! 😂 But really I'm glad that this video helped you. I always recommend to start out on fake skins first to practice your techniques and build your skills before jumping onto live skin
When you change colors during the session what suggestions do you have to make sure you don't accidentally mix a little bit of black with your next color ?
Dip your needle in a cup of distilled water and then touch the needle to a clean paper towel to get the water out. Repeat that until the ink chamber is clear. Or just use a different needle. The black and colored ink won't mix once it's in your skin. Black covers everything.
I just tattooed myself a couple weeks ago, waiting on it to heal a bit more to go back in and do more. Wish I had this video first. Didn’t come out as bad as I thought it would though.
You will know when you need to re-dip as it will be like when a pen runs out and starts to fade when you are using it. So to answer your question simply: as many times as it takes, but I recommend only putting a SMALL amount of ink in the pot at a time or you will incur huge waste.
i love that it hurts you too. now i dont feel so bad because i was doing my first tattoo on myself and of course i picked the back of my left hand and didnt know about stretching skin and i have jumped right in clueless and i quit and spent a lot of time tuning
That ouch reaction took me back. The thigh hurts more than people admit. I literally started a design I did on my left thigh and stopped 😅 my right thigh is blasted though. I’ve come to the conclusion that only someone else can do my thighs lol thanks for the video, appreciate the honesty!

I dont have any problem with pain when getting a tattoo but i think it hurts more doing it yourself because you know the pain is comming and inflicting it yourself. Pls keep putting up this great content for the noobies among us
I had to tattoo myself after getting a portrait tattoo.
Loved the "Ouch" :) thanks so much for your tutorials
Didn't practice much on fake skin and then jumped straight to tattooing my own arm lol so I basically made all the mistakes
But I don't regret it, they turned out ok. Watching this, I'm glad that tattooing doesn't feel painful to me, that certainly makes practicing easier
This
Love this video.
What is the ointment you use on your glove to put on tattoo? Awesome video also it's actually second time watching it 😎👍
What did you use for lubricant (idk if that’s what it is) while tattooing? Would A&D or just regular Vaseline work the same?
Huge fan, love your content. It’s been so helpful over the years
tattoos are such a damn cool thing.
I started on my knee and I must say it was a good spot for me to start
Great tattoo also. The shading was awesome. I just bought my machine product. About to start this tattoo journey with your videos
Did a couple practice pieces on fake skin then I did one on my thigh, started out small like you said and eventually covered my shin and the side of my calf with a couple of good size pieces and now few years later I have one leg almost covered and a couple of tatts on my other leg I need to add too🤣🤣
Genuinely gotta give this guy more credit for what he do
Just tattooed my upper knee last night, I had to blast some metal and bite a tongue depressor but it was a success! This’ll definitely teach you to be more gentle with you clientes 😅
I just ordered a machine and supplies, should be here today and i cant wait to start (on fake skin first)
I really appreciate you mentioning the shakiness; I have a very steady hand unless I am tattooing myself😭
What’s the gel you’re using?
Awesome channel:) What I find interesting about tattooing myself (been doing it for +10 years) was that it hardly hurts anything at all! I get so focused so I kind of just channel out the pain... But I do shake, especially when tattooing harder to reach areas! (Though the side of the ribs are quite the pain when I think about it haha)
Tons of information with some good energy first video i clicked, everything i was looking for! Thank you
Glad it was helpful man!
Hi, Great videos. Which needle and voltage are you at? TIA
Its Sauron's finger chopped off with ring and everything, I loved it, It turned out great
Simple but very clean little tattoo! I enjoy tattooing myself. I've done several large tattoos on my left arm. Slowly filling it into a sleeve. Plan on doing a large skull on my shin tonight if I can get away from work early enough.
Were you able to get around to it?
Love your vids...I can't practice on fake skin,,it's the way my mind works, I need thrown in at some depth and sink or swim...I am covered in pro tatts though so when I practice on myself it's small bits here and there and I'm totally self taught...really I only wanted to learn to shade in small gaps between pro tatts..I'm getting there..
Great work. You made it look very easy. Top tips.
Glad you liked it!
Which machine did you use to tattoo yourself?
this dude is cool. i think being able to do this is badass
Great job, well done. I have full tattooed leg sleeves made by myself. It looks awesome
Thank for making this video, I just ordered a kit from Amaxon, and this is helpful !
Well how’d it go???
Hands down best tattooing 101 video out there. Very helpful thanks. If only you could mention what needles you used
They where kwadren needles
thank you for such an informative video! i noticed that i happen to have the same machine as you, i was wondering if you could share the voltages you had the machine set to for each step of this process? i attempted my first tattoo on myself since getting this machine recently and i had to double line the whole thing because the end result was a bit scratchy.
Depth was what i was wondering. Im definitely following through with this. Luckily im a decent artist so i have that going for me at least.
Thank you for all the advice. Just started and am not to the point I’d do it on myself yet. But feel like I’d be more ready now when I am.
That Sauron is sick!
This content is very helpful for me because i want to learn tattooing.
May I ask, what is the lubricant on the glove that you are using and why?
I'm just beginning tattooing. I appreciate your knowledge and your non judgmental attitude. Huge respect to genuine souls - such as yourself. P.S. do I hear a Philly accent? I'm originally from Philly Texas now since 1996
Originally from pennsylvania :)
Really good sharp lines which looks great. :)
Awesome you're definitely one of the best out there your work is so smooth and clean
Thank you so much 😀
What stuff are you wiping on your stencil lines before pulling each line. Is it Vaseline?
Would of been cool if you showed the placing of the stencil as well
Prob an antibac, but don't quote me on it. Definitely NOT Vaseline though, and that stuff should be avoided on tattoos to high hell.
Is that Aquaphor on your glove? What you’re applying throughout the tattoo?
Late reply but he said it’s green glide (you can use Vaseline as well).
Great video. What machine are you using? Also do you use any specific product (like a tattoo balm)
All I can say is I love your videos. I am considering getting myself into tattooing and your videos really help to clarify things. ❤ I would though have a question. Do you consider it wrong if a begginer "drives" machine on the skin first starting and not floating like you do? Keep up with the good work, you are awesome! 😊
Excellent quality 👌 👏 👍 🙌 😎 😀 👌 👏 👍 loving watching this xxxxxx
Just started tattooing myself about a month ago and now I can’t stop
What are you wiping on it as you go? The stuff on the back of your hand?
yea man , you're my dude for this, big ups Bra. love from New zealand
Quick question what were you using/rubbing on your skin before each line? (It was on your glove) Does it help slide or move the needle?
I use green glide or purple glide. But Vaseline works just as well.
@@Tattooing101 awesome thanks so much
Happy to come across this because I’m nervous as I’ve yet to even start practicing but I wanted to jump in head first, now I know better and I appreciated seeing your video it stopped me from most likely making a huge lifelong error lol!!
Another soul saved! 😂 But really I'm glad that this video helped you. I always recommend to start out on fake skins first to practice your techniques and build your skills before jumping onto live skin
What is on your glove that you keep rubbing on your skin. Also what kind of soap do you use and when do you use it.
You made it look super easy
I just tattooed myself a couple weeks ago, waiting on it to heal a bit more to go back in and do more. Wish I had this video first. Didn’t come out as bad as I thought it would though.
What gel are you wiping over the tattoo during the session?
Looks awesome! Gonna keep practicing before I get here!!
You got this!
What needle size, did you use for the line work?
Sauron lol freaking Nice didnt see that one yet hell yeah 🤟
I have a question. I'm a beginner... How many times do you deep the needle in the ink while tattooing?
You will know when you need to re-dip as it will be like when a pen runs out and starts to fade when you are using it. So to answer your question simply: as many times as it takes, but I recommend only putting a SMALL amount of ink in the pot at a time or you will incur huge waste.
i love that it hurts you too. now i dont feel so bad because i was doing my first tattoo on myself and of course i picked the back of my left hand and didnt know about stretching skin and i have jumped right in clueless and i quit and spent a lot of time tuning
I have tattooed myself many times, it`s kinda pleasntly :D
I started with lettering and doing negative shading on myself now I do grey wash and free hand on myself
That ouch reaction took me back. The thigh hurts more than people admit. I literally started a design I did on my left thigh and stopped 😅 my right thigh is blasted though. I’ve come to the conclusion that only someone else can do my thighs lol thanks for the video, appreciate the honesty!
dude your awesome !!! ... i usually dont say things like that so its a pretty good compliment
Thank you so much
