@@DanielYuck hey man good video. First once I’ve seen like this so far. Went in depth like we needed. I just about to start tatting and bought a dragon hawk mast pen. Are they any gd for a first gun to practice? Im going to get a better gun soon after but just want to see if I got it in me first. Thanks ahead
I can agree with that! When I got my first professional tattoo I remember the entire experience. I got a set of roses on my arm when I was around 18 I think. I remember the persons named was Kat, not Kat Von D, but another person whom went by that name. I remember he got an image from online and used speed stick to apply the tattoo stencil, I can still remember the smell from the speed stick in the tattoo shop as I use it for practice 🤦♂️ haha But from the moment I was in the tattooing environment was the moment I knew that one day I would be involved with tattooing. I knew I wanted to be involved with tattooing I just didn’t know when I was going to get into it at that time. Also, Should you have any questions at all don’t hesitate to reach out to me and I will do my best to assist you in the best possible direction🤝
I just got my 3rd but It's been 3 years so I told the artist I don't remember what the needle feels like he was like good because I forget how to tattoo I was like I hope ur kidding because I wasn't
Also just a side note it was my first one with shading and color it turned out great and is almost healed now it was nearly 3 weeks ago I still gotta remember not to scratch it though I wake up in the morning and scratch my arm and then I'm like shit lol
Hahah for real! That’s why I say it will be someone in that depth and not the full 2mm. It looks brutally painful, that’s why every tattoo I’ve ever got hurt so bad lol.
I agree, wow! I have just one larger tattoo and I feel pretty glad that I didn't know beforehand how deep the needle needs to go, haha. it hardly hurt, but I would have stressed out I think. now it also makes more sense to me why it apparently hurts to get your shins tattooed.
One of my tattoos is completely blown out and while getting it it literally felt like i was being stabbed. It hurt SO MUCH MORE than my other tattoos had and i just told myself it was because of the area (inner upper arm), but now seeing you demonstrate the blow out, it validates my feelings. I remember the artist telling me i just had low pain tolerance when in other sessions with other tattoo artists i would literally sleep while getting them. Still need to get that shit covered.
Man, the second a tattoo artist told me it was my fault/low pain tolerance, etc. I wouldn’t be going back to them for work. I know what my body can handle, you know?
Thats a horrible experience! I personally feel all of my tattoos hurt but they were not unbearable. I think if we are crossing into the threshold where the pain is excruciating I would take a look at the artist technical application, positioning, attention to detail. How did the tattoo end up healing?

THE BEST video!!! Seriously! This has been my biggest question starting out as a beginner! I love visuals and artists saying “you just have to feel it to know”, is not enough for me lol I understand in time and with more experience that is the case, but as a beginner this is so helpful and informative! Thank you so much sir! 🙏🏼

Love that clear silicone. What a cool & creative away to illustrate needle depth. What kind of ink do you use? Your black looks so much more vibrant than mine.
These clear silicone skins are from a company called "Frankenskins". I felt this clear skin would make for a great demonstration of needle depth. I am currently using Intenze Formula 23 for everything and for solid black I will use Intense Zuper Black. What ink are you currently using on your end?
Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! I'm an old gal in my 50's and I'm heavily tattooed. My first professional tattoo I was 15. I have to say 90% of my tattoos were with "heavy hand". There's only been one person who wasn't heavy handed and he's thankfully doing really great as an artist. Anyway, I bought myself a tattoo machine because I'm not doing well as far as my health and I'm an old 80's punk rock princess so I decided before I donate my body to the body farm, I'm going to go completely ape shit and fill in spots myself for family members that have passed recently. After watching your video, I know all the famous assholes that have tattooed me may have been great at art but I've been scarred badly and once my entire forearm was like hamburger meat. Anyway I just want to say thank you for this. I'm going out with a fucking bang and I'm going to die with all the tattoos I can give myself and trust that I know I don't have to worry about some one else causing me the extra pain and scarring - which I have had plenty of! Bless you and your family. ❤️
@@pumpkinqueen21 oh you can get him to do it! Grandparents-especially grandpas- will do anything for their grandchildren! Talk to him about it and ask him to help you come up with an idea for matching tats. I bet he’s always wanted a tattoo. 😘
Rock on 🤘🏼 im learning because i used to be a great artist drawing as a you ger kid..now in my 40’s im making a return and i want to dive into tattooing…wish me luck!
Not a tattoo artist but this was fascinating. I have to say this makes me appreciate the skill that this art form takes. Whenever I get tattooed I love to watch the artist do their thing but I honestly never realized just how much precision it takes. Wow!
The art form itself is def a world of it's own. I remember pulling line after line after line for about 7 months or so and for that entire time I was not able to get a good clean, solid line until things just started clicking. haha I appreciate you dropping a comment!
I’ve been a tattoo artist for 12 years and like he said everyone is different. A builder will need be the same as a 20 year old female and so on. And some people just do have tougher and dryer thicker skin. Some peoples skin is so white or feels more watery. It’s a larger variety than people think. But always remember it’s a steel needle hitting soft skin. And blow outs are worst than a slightly faded line. You can always add you can take away !
I have looked and asked so many people for this exact information. An already difficult task to explain I understand but this is the way that it should be shown and explained to anyone who ever plans on using a tattoo gun on human skin. My hats off to you for coming up with this method.

I know this video is now 2 years old, but thank you for this. My first ever tattoo gun arrived today, my fake skins are definitely way too thin to be able to understand this properly. I’ve just ordered myself one that are at least 3mm to test this out. Thank you for explaining this so well!!! I’m guessing from what you are saying you can actually feel the layers of the skin on actual people??
Just randomly came across your video. You repeat yourself a million times, but the knowledge is there. I can respect the repeating because you are trying to make sure the point comes across. Overall, great video man. Keep up the good work.
I recently got a autograph tattoo and the artist was super gentle. I barely felt it. Since she did not go very deep at all, the lines are super crisp and thin. After healing, it looks like an actually autograph signed in pen. Just perfect. The other tattoos I have, are thick lines that went too deep. Now they are blurred and faded. They look out of focus. You have to always find the right artist for the right job.
I’ve grown up going to tattoo expos with my parents and as a young adult am quite tattooed now. I definitely have a new found appreciation for the work my artists have done. Thank you for your amazing insight into this incredible art form.
Showing this to my girlfriend who’s practicing right now. She was just awarded an apprenticeship with my artist I’ve been using! This is what she’s scared of. Nothing else.

Getting my first one done above my ankle in a couple weeks. Interested to see how it feels after watching this. My cousin is doing it and he’s been at it for over 10 years and said everyone’s different for pain!
Everyone is different and every tattoo is different. Even moving 1cm over on the skin can change how it feels. I think the most important thing is to make sure you're well fed, hydrated and in a good mindset. Get the basics right, and your body will be able to cope with pain better.
@@TheFreakonthenet I agree! Had 4 knee surgeries and a full ruptured Achilles through my soccer career, I think I’m pretty well prepped for the pain😂 only way to find out is to actually get it done! Will definitely eat well and drink lots of water before.
There's a lot of nerves endings down there so you may or may not twitch a few times. (As I did when I got my inside of my ankle done few years back.) But everyone's pain tolerance is different also be sure to have a sugary snack before getting tattooed. Hope all goes well!
@@jen7818 forgot about this! Got it yesterday! Took 10 minutes and wasn’t bad at all, some spots were a little uncomfortable but overall it was fine. Got the outline of my French bulldogs head just smaller than the size of a baseball just above my ankle!
I was giving myself a tattoo, and I'm new to tattooing. I couldn't figure out why I was drawing blood, and couldn't get the ink to go on my skin. Turned out it was cause I had my needle depth way too low, and the needle couldn't go back into the piece to grab more ink. Once I adjusted the needle depth, it did not hurt nearly as much! And I could actually inject the ink.
You are absolutely amazing and so incredibly helpful. I've never seen a video this packed with information. You've answered all of my questions and some more.

@@DanielYuck be careful what you wish for! I just got back into tattooing after an 8 years break and I only tattooed for a year before I stopped. I’ll definitely take you up on that.
I'm a very amateur artist on the skin & I just moved onto doing my own thigh. I tattood 3 separate ideas & found SOME areas where I may have gone a little deep cause it looks darker than the rest of my line but once I got used to the depth, all my lines came out super smooth & it's so satisfying when you wipe & you reveal a clean line under. What I wanted to say before I got carried away was that I have NEVER seen anyone demonstrate depths the way you did. I, along with a lot of others, appreciate the time & thought you put into this video. You've earned my sub & you can count on my view from here on out. 🎉🤝🏽

Me again....back to learn...Still learning correct depth as its harder on curves, contours of the body....over collar bone etc.....appreciate this video!!! 😀 even in shops they hit my lines too deep!
Ahhhh yea bro it’s super easy for anyone to blow out someone skin. I take it lite and slow with everyone so I can feel out the area and become better acquainted with the skin type at hand. A blow out doesn’t indicate bad skillsets as there as sooo many reasons why it can happen. There is also a lot we as tattooist can do to avoid blowouts as well.
I'm researching my best before i get my first tattoo, and I'm so glad I found this video. I never really thought about the needle depth in this detail, so knowing that an artist can potentially give you nerve damage PLUS a horrid tat, I'll be shopping for artists even extra carefully lol
I agree! It’s a world of its own and can definitely be interesting to observe. Prior to me ever getting into tattooing I was always amazed with the mechanics and buzzing of a machine. I breed and show pedigreed Flemish Giant and Beveren rabbits, tattoos are required in the right ear for the rabbitry identification at shows and in the left ear for the registration tattoo. I have used a pen for tatting their ears since June 2014. This month, January 2023, I will be tatting both ears of my first registered Nubian goat kids. This is the first time I have actually SEEN an example of tattooing at specific depths. I must say thank you, as this helps me understand a lot better about adjusting the needle depth for the ears on the different animals. You will help make a world of difference in the quality and life of the tats I put on my critters for showing and for selling. Thank you.
I'm absolutely terrified of needles, it makes me queazy looking at it going in tbh. I passed out after 4 vaccines when I was 15, I still have an incredibly high phobia of looking at a needle. Everyone said I couldn't do it and it made me want to do it even more, so I got a starter machine since I wouldn't be able to do a stick and poke. After 3 days of practice I managed to do it on my wrist and thigh in one sitting, I went to light a lot of the time but I got it to where I feel proud of it. This video helped at lot to demonstrate it and I found it helpfull after I finished my first two. Edit: grammar
Im very scared because my wrists are really really skinny and that’s where I want my tattoo.. UPDATE: got my tattoo, didnt hurt at all, will turn it into a sleeve, if I had to describe the pain yeah its really just as if a sharp hot pencil is dragged on your skin, not too terrible
Ahhh that’s great to hear you got your tattoo done! I have my wrist area done on my left hand and I can’t remember the pain too much so for me it probably wasn’t too bad, if I don’t remember it. Haha I remember my fingers, now that pain I can still remember clearly. The fingers for me are bad haha they hurt bad for me. I think that’s a cool way to describe what you felt, as if a sharp hot pencil is dragged on your skin. I always looked at a tattoo like mini incisions, kind of like a medical procedure haha so in my mind I correlate the tattoo pain to some sort of “incisual” pain. How did you like the way the tattoo came out?
I tattooed a girls bicep and she has reaaaally thin skin, but it was the easiest one ive tattooed and the most painless she's had. Skin doesn't make sense lol

@@DanielYuck My first tattoo is of a tree growing out of a book. I'm a believer of always pursuing knowledge. I try to learn something new everyday! My second tattoo is actually more personal to me. I only told 3 people when I first got it. Because it wasn't about showing it off. It's a tattoo of moon jellyfish. They are my favorite animal. To me they represent peace, freedom, beauty, and hidden strength. I have an anxiety disorder and watching jellyfish just slowly and peacefully move through water is very calming. The next tattoo I'm planning to get is "I'd rather be free"
@@UsrNmTkn That is amazingly awesome! Such powerful concepts and meaning behind them. Even the thought of thinking about a jellyfish swimming is very calming. If I may,Where are you going to get your Id rather be free tattoo?
I got my first tattoo like a month ago at this point and I got a whole sleeve done so this is interesting to see especially cause I'm in an anatomy and physiology class and we studied the skin. Pretty sure my artist did a good job and didn't cause any blowouts (which I didn't know existed). Getting the tattoo did feel... I could probably word that better. It didn't really hurt cept on the bone of my elbow and up near my armpit. Other than that it just kinda felt like a burning sensation? But not really a burning sensation idk.

Definitely a big help! & hell yea once it hits the hipodermis it will bleed in the skin leaving it look like a bruise. I got my knee tatted, line work only & he blew out some lines! 😣
i'm super late to this comment but here's my thoughts- i did two knee tattoos on myself, they were painful (as tattoos are) typically when you get a knee tattoo, you want to have your legs out in front of you, if you're specially tatting above, or on the knees itself, you want to have that extra cushion there because either way it's gonna suck- i couldn't even finish my knee tats because it was a bit too much. I know they aren't blown out but a little bit of knowledge for anyone thinking of getting one lok

Your video gave me the visual aid I need to set the correct depth. Should I adjust the depth around the wrist and elbow? Any helpful advice is welcomed and appreciated. Thank you for the tutorials.
Thanks so much for this educational video! I'm planning on getting a full body project (long time dream of mine) and I'm really struggling to figure out how to pick the most suitable artist for this. It's something really big, expensive and time consuming. Not even mentioning the trust the artist and i will have to put into this endeavor. I'd love to have "parts" that, together form an expanding tattoo. For example: underarms and upper arms, with the pattern moving together and maybe getting intertwined. A back piece and a chest piece that reach each other over the shoulders and on the ribs. Do you think this would be a good way to do this? Somewhat symmetrical tattoos over the course of probably a few years?

Apparently also you can get a good idea from reading how it wrinkles then. Or so my local tattoo artist explained it to me. Naturally it may not work with super obese people.
@@PencilsGraphite hmmmm that’s a good question ! I’m not certain how I feel about that. It never crossed my mind to pinch someone skin to find the depth. I guess because even if I did I would not truly know the accurate depth. I find the depth using the fundamental senses. The vibration when the skin breaks, the sound of the skin breaking, and my eyes to visually see the ink going where I need it to go. That is simply my approach tho. Someone may find insight from the pinch approach should they know what they are looking for upon doing so.
This makes me wonder why the hell i got a sleeve and half sleeve... In theory tattoos sound incredibly stupid to do to yourself but... they look so good and it's a really cool unique experience that keeps bringing me back for more.
So the 2 mm. you were trying to achieve is how deep the needle should go and not necessarily how far the ink goes down? Because I’m confused between what you said first and the measurements you do after. I’m starting my portfolio to become a tattoo apprentice and this helps
This is a great question! Different parts of the skin require different depths for multiple reasons, so I don't have a 1 off answer. Are they any gd for a first gun to practice? Im going to get a better gun soon after but just want to see if I got it in me first. Thanks ahead
Got my first tattoo last month and now I’m obsessed with learning everything about the process. Such a cool art form!
I can agree with that! When I got my first professional tattoo I remember the entire experience. I got a set of roses on my arm when I was around 18 I think. I remember the persons named was Kat, not Kat Von D, but another person whom went by that name. I remember he got an image from online and used speed stick to apply the tattoo stencil, I can still remember the smell from the speed stick in the tattoo shop as I use it for practice 🤦♂️ haha
But from the moment I was in the tattooing environment was the moment I knew that one day I would be involved with tattooing. I knew I wanted to be involved with tattooing I just didn’t know when I was going to get into it at that time.

@@DanielYuck omg ur so nicee, i love your repplies to people :)
Got my first two today. Here I am on TH-cam watching every tattoo video I can find 💀
Even the correct depth looks deeper than I thought..
Still need to get that shit covered.
i have a quite large inner arm tattoo, and it hardly hurt, except very close to the armpit
@@AliceHasenkohl yeah i got another one on the other arm, same spot, last month and it barely hurt at all. this time i got a good artist tho hahaha

Not a tattoo artist but this was fascinating. I have to say this makes me appreciate the skill that this art form takes. Whenever I get tattooed I love to watch the artist do their thing but I honestly never realized just how much precision it takes. Wow!
The art form itself is def a world of it's own. I remember pulling line after line after line for about 7 months or so and for that entire time I was not able to get a good clean, solid line until things just started clicking. haha
I appreciate you dropping a comment!
Every time I get tattooed the artist tells me I have dream skin. I'm a light skinned Black woman and they literally always say it- it's so funny.
That’s a good point I want to bang out single pass lines every time but I will definitely start out lighter until I find the right depth

Oh wow! So your first tattoo was done above your ankle ? That spot may hurt a bit I feel. How did the session go for you on your end?
I was giving myself a tattoo, and I'm new to tattooing. I couldn't figure out why I was drawing blood, and couldn't get the ink to go on my skin. Turned out it was cause I had my needle depth way too low, and the needle couldn't go back into the piece to grab more ink. Once I adjusted the needle depth, it did not hurt nearly as much! That's a cute raichu on the skin. I got my first tattoo earlier this year, it's a bulbasaur. It's neat seeing how tattoos are made.

Love this video, great visuals. My blow out tat has outlived my others. 25 yrs looks brand new, had to retouch all the others.
Wow, what an excellent presentation. This visual really advanced my understanding of the ACTUAL thickness of the skin. Man, thank you so much. You're a hero🙌 PS- "gruesome" 😅🤣😂
Haha I’m glad I could help you! I’m glad I was able to shed some light for you.

@@abashedAuthor honey idk who told u to have your leg out in front of u I’m assuming u meant laying flat while u tat yourself. The way my knee was done i had my knee bent in front of me you want your skin as flat as possible.
Thank you for your kind feedback and support Karisma!
Blowouts suck and hurt! How did the tattoo heal overall?
@@DanielYuck tattoo came out nice just some lines look like they have a little bruise. But they are not too bad

I got my second tat 2 weeks ago and it was on hand and up my wrist. The hand was absolute agony!!!! The wrist and up my arm didn’t hurt at all
Liked and subscribed! Doing a blackout tattoo on the arm. I'm using a large curved magnum cartridge from Mast. I'm thinking of letting the needles hang out at 2mm and just ride the rim while packing.
Awesome visual! Really helpful! Thanks for listing you supplies, those Frankenskins are exactly what I've been looking for!
Thank you very much for your support and feedback! I appreciate you.
I do my best to inform everyone on the tools I am using to help others gain access to good quality tools.
Lately I have been using Trueskin and Reelskin fake skin, I highly recommend those fake skins as well.

Best video on this topic I've seen. Thank you, this clears a lot of my mistakes up, now I need to hone my craft. Thanks for a great video.
This was such a good video!!! Literally pulled my first good line after this video!
This is an incredible explanation
I've just purchased my first supplies to start practicing. Are there any videos or resources that you would suggest that a beginner take a look at while practicing on the practice skins?
This has been my biggest anxiety and this video appeared right before I get to tattoo my first apprentice tattoo tomorrow x thanks so much 😍
How did it go?
Thank you homie very clear and concise, I appreciate you very much.
I rlly wanna tattoo for a living so I'm trying to eat live and breathe tattoo rn. This vid is super helpful!

I usually go about the thickness of a dime. No blown lines and no loss of lines after healing
Just started learning how to tattoo, been having issues with needle depth, its interesting but i dont know if I'd ever tattoo people
Bro best video on needle depth. Good job. I have a much much better understanding. 2mm got it.

@@DanielYuck What's your thought on the "pinch some skin between fingers and look at the fold, then half it's thickness" method to figure out the needle depth?
Very good examples thanks for the help.
This makes me wonder why the hell i got a sleeve and half sleeve... In theory tattoos sound incredibly stupid to do to yourself but... they look so good and it's a really cool unique experience that keeps bringing me back for more.
Newbie here, This video helped a lot and answered the questions I had. I couldn't get my ink to stay in my fake skin.
I recently made a video where I share with you all what a blow out on human skin looks like, how it happens and what to look for. I will link that video below for you. If you have any questions drop a comment and I will assist you in a better direction.
