2024 Mitsubishi Mirage ES Review- Is it the WORST new car?

  • We bought this car on September 27th, 2023.
    And so far, it has been very good.
    One thing to note, I did not show much audio of the car driving, as I have failed to set it up right for my dad to record. The video in the mountain the radio was on, which is copyright.
    And the video on the freeway didn't have the radio on, but the phones microphone was being aggressively blown on by the AC. But overall, this sounds about the same as a 2008 Toyota Prius on the freeway. Maybe a bit quieter.
    And with Vredestein Quatrac tires, or Bridgestone tires, the ride will be much more quiet than stock.
    I have heard the Vredestein Quatrac tires are better than Bridgestone, and others say Bridgestone is better. So I don't know.
    Here are some links to how the Mirage will drive, and with proper audio. These videos I am going to link are Not mine, but they are how mine drives. These videos are all from @kmckenzie2461 .

    As a Mirage owner, good job on this video production. Everything are on point.
    Wish you could suggest shopper to consider the Mirage sedan variant called G4 as it is more passenger friendly with a decent space. Yeah 1-2 less MPG than the hatchback but it is negligible.
    Btw: Did you know that the G4 is almost the same dimension as the 03-08 Corolla?? I felt amazed by it. Obviously more HP but INCAPABLE of reaching 50 MPG!

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think I will pin your comment, you have a great point, I completely forgot about the G4 when making this video, which is a very silly mistake.
      The G4/Sedan is a very nice car. I don't like how the seats don't fold down, making the trunk smaller. But for a lot of people, a G4 is a bit bigger for the back seats, and it has a decent trunk still.
      Also I didn't know the Corolla and G4 are close to the same. My Grandma had a 2005 Corolla. It is a nice car! My uncle has it now. It only has about 45,000 miles.

      @@extralock1045 yup. The G4 rear seat frame support is shaped as “X” and made out of steel (I think), and another material behind that is made out of rectangular cardboard lol. That’s why it doesn’t fold down. Not the end of the world.
      Mine the G4…and I love it. It too unpretentious and quirky, and no (@h8rs) it is not a dangerous car to be in. We are driver; not statistics, and we all share road with other vehicle in all shapes and forms.

    For anyone wondering the Bridgestone tires in question, they are the "Bridgestone Potenza RE92" which fun fact is the same tires that came on the first gen Honda insight. The stock dunlop tires that comes on the mirage is quite loud in terms of road noise but that is about where the differences end. (not sure why in this video you have Falken tires, maybe the 2024 switched to them, not sure but ik they are a cheaper tire then both the dunlop and RE92) I recommend these Bridgestone tires to anyone that owns a mirage, improves the ride by a lot. For anyone wondering I got the RE92s from Discount Tire, which was actually cheaper then the dunlops. Maybe the eco dunlops are going extinct now that the mirage is being killed off and they were designed for Mitsubishi cars of this size, might explain why Lock's Mirage has Falken tires and that dunlops cost more atleast in my area.

    Gotta ask. What made you choose the ES instead of the LE, BE or SE? $2k or less is not that far off from ES, especially the LE 🤔. Just genuinely curious.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you!
      So, I almost got an LE. But the reason I didn't is it doesn't add much. It has different looking rims.. But I can just go to Walmart and buy a cheap hubcap if I want it to look better.
      The LE also comes with fog lights, but I don't need fog lights where I live. If I remember right, the LE is about $500 more than the ES.
      Though, I do like the SE quite a lot. Like, it has heated seats. But really, if I want those seats, I can go down to the local junk yard, unbolt the seats on an SE, and put them in my ES for probably $100.
      I would like heated seats, I am not sure how to add that. Probably I need to get a seat with the heating element, which would just be any SE seat.
      And the wiring is probably already there, so I just need to add a switch. Or maybe not. Not sure. With the fog lights it is a plug and play install.
      But in my mind, the $2,000 fully loaded one is not a bad price. But I can do most of those upgraded my self, but for cheaper.
      Also, the car has 2,500 miles right now.

    Does the es mirage automatically come with a backup camera? Also, lane assistance is not available for the es?

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're right! The base model comes with a backup camera (every single vehicle sold in the US of the year 2018 and newer must have a camera), as well as Android and Apple Carplay.
      The ES also does not have lane keep "assist", (it just warns you when you leave the lane without signaling, doesn't correct you).
      The BE, SE, and Ralliart have lane keep assist though. And the SE has rain sensing wipers, and auto LED high beams.
      Every trim level (2021+) has forward collision mitigation, meaning if someone rapidly stops on front of you, and you don't react, the car will slam on the brakes. You can adjust how sensitive you want it as well by pressing the button on the dash.

    Great video and love that gorgeous yellow! Did you pay MSRP plus fees and taxes? How much did you pay for it? I'm wondering if I can negotiate a discount?

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Thanks! Here is how it worked out.
      So, I been looking at these cars since ~2017. And back then they where usually less than $10,000, not including fees. Out the door high $11,000, low $12,000.
      And I didn't even drive then, so I didn't get it. But now in 2023, these cars tend to be marked up. Usually it is MSRP, but they add on paint protection, and some other things. It varies, but usually they have add ones. Some dealers will remove them if you ask, some wont. (I never seen one remove it).
      The first one I tried to get, the dealer lied in more ways than 1, and they tried hiding up charges.. They said there was no up charges, but it was $2,000 over what it should have been. Didn't find out until I was about to write a check, then I finally got a price break down. So we left. Do NOT go to Cerritos Mitsubishi.
      The 2nd time, I went to Puente Hills, Mitsubishi. They had this one coming in with nothing added from the factory, but they did add on things at the dealer, and that is paint protection, and a security thing.. Not a big deal. But it did jack the price up about $1,500. But they also grant discounts to members of Costco, so those add ons where free. So I paid nothing for them.
      The guy over there, Moe, was very honest, and up front about everything, and that is awesome. I don't like how they add on stuff like that before the car is sold, but they are still up front with it. And being honest goes a long way with me.
      I got my Mitsubishi Mirage ES for MSRP, which is $18,110. And there was no stuff added from the factory, like an arm rest or center console. Just the bare bones Mirage with the Welcome Package, and the Tonneau Cover, which come with every Mirage.
      So, the MSRP after destination was $18,110. And after sales tax (here it is 7.75%), fees, and registration, the total price came out to $19,951.11. So not quite $20,000. But very close.
      Some dealers also have discounts for financing, or trading something in. And also they can have military discounts too. The dealer I was at did not have any discounts, but I have seen some do, but they are not here in California.
      I should also add, if the dealer you are at has both the ES, and SE, check the prices on both. The SE might be worth the extra $1,500-2,000 to you. It has nicer looking seats, heated seats, an arm rest, auto high beams, auto wipers, fog lights, a nicer steering wheel, and a nicer trim around the doors. It just overall looks nicer, and is probably a bit more comfortable.
      The ES steering wheel you might want a cover on, as it is rough and wore my hands out on a 5 hour drive through the mountains. But now with a $1.25 steering wheel cover from Dollar Tree, that fixed the problem.
      Also in terms of getting a discount, it is worth asking.. But ask that last. As if you can get a finance discount, or a Costco discount, get those first, then ask if you can get an extra discount. Or if they don't do that kind of discount from financing, or Costco, then ask about just a nice discount.

I've had it since 9/25/21, and it replaced a 1994 Mercury Tracer wagon with 184,000+ miles that got totaled in an accident earlier that month when I was T-boned by a Kenworth flatbed truck that ran a red light. The Focus is the "high end" model with a sunroof and a CD player. I want a new Mirage because of its simplicity and reliability. My slogan is "Sweet and simple, cheap and cheerful". I took it up to Big Bear Lake, California. It is a steep mountain road going about 6,000 feet in elevation gain in about 15 miles. It did good. 2,500 RPM got about 35-40 MPH.
      Today I made it a bit mad on a very steep, fast street. I had 915 pounds worth of people in the Mirage, and I was going up a steep hill. At 4,000 RPM it was going 40 MPH. Then I had to get in the left lane to turn left, which people tend to go about 75 MPH in. So I gave it 5,000 RPM and went a whopping 50 MPH. Maybe if I turned the AC off it would help. It was so much weight the suspension was bottomed out.
      But normally up the hill I go about 45 MPH with cruise control, and it's at 1,950 RPM. I highly recommend it. It has enough power to get around. I made a video taking this on the mountain interstate, going up and down 6% grades. It does even better with hills in the city.

      I think you would find this car pretty refreshing then, maintenance is relatively cheap especially if you are willing to get your hands dirty and do it yourself. I do all my maintenance in my apartment parking lot and it saves me ALOT of money. Oil changes 5k miles, Transmission services 20k, brake flush, coolant flush, brake pads, tire rotations and other random things that have broken or worn out over the years like a window regulator ive fixed and I tore the bumper off on the curb but I fixed it myself. All this being done by myself, Im not a mechanic. The car gets really good gas mileage, and if you are willing to drive more conservatively then you will get even better mpg then what its rated for. Its only like an 8gal tank but lasts a good while, so nice to just put 20 dollars worth of gas in and it just goes. If you do the maintenance on time it will just keep going and going and going. Hey and you dont have to worry about shady used cars and not knowing how it was taken care of.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Or if you're a MPG nerd, you fill the tank fully, then need to get change which might be annoying. But the $20 route works good too! At let's say $3/gallon, that gets you over 350 miles of freeway driving. @@OrganicFoxes

    No lies, Mitsubishi has a great team of designers and they don’t disappoint (MHO).
    The CVT technology is as reliable as a junkie addict with your money.
    For that short time Mitsubishi has Manual Transmission and they don’t go bad unless the person don’t know how to drive Manual.
    Sad Mitsubishi stopped the Manual Transmission on the Mirage.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do understand why they stopped making the manual. Not that many people know how to drive the manual, the CVT is pretty reliable if you take care of it, and the CVT actually gets better MPG than the manual, even on the highway.
      These CVT's can go 400,000+ miles if you change the CVT oil and filters every ~25,000 miles.

    CVT transmission is ok, is reliable?

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It depends. If you don't take care of it like change the fluid and filters in it every 30,000 miles, it's not reliable. You need to make sure to change the fluid and filters in the transmission every 30,000. No later. If you do Mountain Driving change it earlier. Maybe 20,000 mi.
