I think the vast majority of manufacturers place negative reviews about cars and trucks like this because they are affordable and all the manufacturers want to do anymore is rip people off. There is a huge market for small affordable vehicles that are good on gas but don't have a lot of power, but you can't sell that for $50,000 dollars or $100,000 dollars so they won't offer it to people. It's a great car, ignore the negative reviews, it's just the greedy corporate elite trying to stick it to you again.

I really like the car. It's gotten 4,600 miles on it so far.
I also need to add, the door panels are plastic, which is good. Just be aware they scratch very easy. Also the plastic steering wheel is alright, but when I was going on a long 8 hour drive in the mountains, my hands got worn out a bit. So I put a cheap soft steering wheel cover on it. And it fixed the problem, even on the long 10-12 hour drives I've done in it.

The MPG does go down at those higher speeds. At 55 MPH, you get about 60 MPG. At 70 MPH, you get about 45 MPG. So you lose about 1 MPG for every 1 MPH gain.

Oh man, great review! I love economy class cars. It's sad the really cheap ones don't sell well. The sales numbers seem to point to everyone wants the step up. It's like when you go to a restaurant and you order a bottle of wine. You never get the cheapest bottle, you get the next step up. Meanwhile that cheap bottle was just as good. I drove this, a Versa, and a Rio back to back. I liked the Rio the most and ended up buying it. It easily had the most power. It sucks the kia boys thing is driving up insurance prices, at least the 2023 models are fixed, hopefully that fad dies down and I can save some money. But still, I really wanted something new to replace our second car, and something that is super cheap to repair. It was replacing a 20 year old car that I was fed up with the expensive parts. I've driven it on several 4+ hour road trips and was pleasantly surprised by it. I genuinely have no complaints about the car for the price. Heck I even got some money off which is wild considering how cheap it is. If I had to nitpick, the only thing that annoys me is I have to remove the headrest in the back seat to fit both the car seats. So whenever I remove those to drive someone else, I have to pull them out of the trunk and re-install them. My EV6 doesn't have this problem, I guess the headrests on the Rio are tilted forward or the back seat slopes weird? Who knows, it's just a nitpick.

@@dbzownz12345 I have no complaints. I live deep in the city and we get 35+ mpg. Which is wild. My Nissan rogue would get 16 and my Buick encore would never get above 17. On the highway, the Rio is getting at least 44 depending on the trip. It’s really similar mileage to the ford fusion hybrid we had.
No complaints about the steering. It seems average. I’ll say though, being pot hole season, the suspension can be a little rough. The car has only developed on squeak so far on the drivers door. I just unclipped it a little and then pressed it back on and that seems to have resolved it.
I do wish I got the tech package for push button start. Mainly because you can buy a cheap car starter that’s easy to install yourself. Mine had a key so I have to get a more expensive and harder to install remote starter. I’ll probably just skip it.

It's easy to make fun of the Mirage but think of this, these are things that are standard on the Mirage but were optional (or not available) on even large expensive Buicks Mercurys and Dodges not that many years ago:
Power windows, power brakes, power steering, keyless power locks, automatic transmission, air conditioning,
dual power side mirrors, AM FM radio, tachometer, cruise control, delay wipers, many airbags, (rear view camera and touch screen obviously would not have even been optional about 10 years ago on most cars).
All of this while getting 40mpg , and probably faster than most cars built between 1975 and 2010.
How far standard options have come, even if styling is... Meh.
But economy cars normally aren't pretty.
So when you start making fun of how "basic" this car is you should look and see what an actual basic car was like not that long ago, try driving a VW Beetle, Chevette, Pinto, Escort, Fiesta, Festiva, Neon, Geo, Fiat or Civic with crank windows no power steering and no air conditioning , no adjustable steering wheel, no tach, no body colored bumpers or maybe even no gas guage (Beetle), and usually not even a manual passenger side view mirror, any number of cars were truly that basic in 70s, 80s, 90s, even in 2000s.
Even big cars like an Impala, Fury, Galaxie, and "luxury" coupes like Monte Carlos and most imports would lack many of these features.
In many ways this car has every luxury feature that most people need other than the name plate and obviously not a lot of room, but as far as comfort and luxury features, it's really hard to be critical in any way of what this car offers for the price!

Harvard University says a 155-pound person riding a bicycle at 12 mph will burn roughly 576 calories per hour. To replenish that, it will take approximately two medium-sized avocados at $1.62 per unit, according to the most recent Hass Avocado Board retail sales figures. Consequently, biking is roughly $0.27 per mile in avocados, with or without the toast.
Fortunately, the Mitsubishi Mirage is much kinder to the environment. The American Automotive Association reports that as of May 22, 2023, nationwide average fuel prices are sitting at $3.54 per gallon for 87-octane pump gas. Given the Mirage’s EPA-rated 39 combined mpg, driving to work is just $0.09 per mile in the Japanese hatchback. And with the NHTSA’s (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) four-star crash safety rating, it’s a lot safer than your Cannondale.

Honestly I think a used Toyota would be better, these would be more appealing if they had a larger dealer network but where I'm from you have to drive close to 2 hours to get to a Mitsubishi dealer, which would really be a pain in the butt for WHEN this thing eventually breaks on you and you have to do warranty work. Kinda defeats the point of buying new, when you have to really go out of your way to use the warranty.

This is more reliable than any other brand new car for under $20k in the USA. Mitsubishi don't have reliability issues, so a breakdown is not the inevitability you pose it to be. This isn't the "cheapest car to buy in the USA", but it is the "cheapest car in the USA" due to the fact that it will be cheaper to own than any of its competitors when including all the factors that go into a total cost of ownership like fuel mileage, scheduled maintenance, and base price are combined. I wouldn't buy cars in this segment because of the lack of crash protection.

Im a mechanic and i wanted a cheap new fuel efficient 4 door car. I bought a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage. 5 speed, 1.2L 78hp 3 cylinder. It was voted the worst car in america by car and driver. I didnt understand why.
It went 0-60 in about 8 seconds and i would drive it at 80mph with no fear, it also got 50mph. I put 50k on it in 2 years with zero issues. I paid $9800 out the door for it.
The only issue i had with it was its traction control system, if it was raining with standing water on the road it would violently dip when the system cut power.
So everytime i got in i just turned taction control off and powered through hydroplanes.
Its simple, cheap, reliable, safe, easy to maintain.
I would buy it again if i needed a commuter.
