  • Opening a hole up from 1/2" to 2" using a twist drill mounted on the carriage of my Broadbent Schofield lathe. 118 RPM and .018"/rev. The tool post wasn't pinned to the compound rest but the nut was reefed down with a wrench/cheater bar about 5' long.

It definitely makes it easy on a guy. Gotta save that right arm for lifting pints. Ken

That went well. And even blue chips at the end.

Thanks Rusty. I had used coolant on a few before this one but it made a mess all over the floor. Decided it was easier to re-grind the drill than clean up the mess. In the end I didn't have to re-grind the drill. Ken

Do you not split the point and drill pilit holes? Ive found my larger bits preform a bit better with spotting and no pilot holes. Splitting the point, ive had good success with up to a 1 1/6 drill cutting on size. Havent tried anything bigger as I simply dont own larger drills.

It depends on what I'm doing. In this case I started out drilling these on my smaller lathe and had drilled a pilot hole in all of them first (it could never drill to 2" without a pilot even with a split point.) I was using three drills to get it to size. When I changed to my large lathe I was able to just use two drills. This lathe is heavy enough that I could probably drill right to 2" without a pilot and without splitting the point. However, I don't know if the tool post could handle that without rotating (I don't have it pinned to the compound rest). Normally I only split the point on smaller drills when I have to use a hand drill. Ken

@hmw1972 I tend to split the point on everything I re-sharpen. I've always just drilled with the tailstock. Probably not a bad idea to get an MT3 tool holder though.

Whats the difference or advantages drilling with the lathe carriage? As apposed to using the tail stock?? Im a novice and im only learning 😂

I had a number of them to do so it just made it easier on me not to have to crank them through by hand with the tailstock. Also, when you feed the drill at the correct feed rate it stays sharp much longer. It is hard to feed a large drill fast enough by hand to be at the correct feed rate. Ken

Hi what did u do for work before own shop i know u had said turbine facility what sector does most of your work come from now

I had a few different jobs but after the gas turbine shop I spent most of my time as a design engineer for a company that made tools for the oil industry. Most of my work comes from the construction/manufacturing sector.

I think your tool post and your tool holder are not in total equation.

Hello Pierre. I'm not sure what you mean. Everything is lined up as well as it can be. One problem with this lathe is the underside of the carriage is so worn out that the carriage tilts forward toward the chuck. This causes the drill to point slightly downward resulting in an oversize hole. However, in this case I'll be boring this diameter out on my smaller, much more accurate lathe. Ken
