Nice. I would recommend you invest in a dead-blow hammer though, they really are the best tool for knocking the part hard into a chuck or machine vice, perfect for getting the part sitting hard against a parallel strip. If you can't invest the money to buy one (there are some reasonably cheap ones) then invest some time and scrap to make one. It's just a soft faced hammer with a hollow head which is filled mostly full of steel or lead shot. The shot provides a second impact that helps prevent the part from bouncing back. Every machinist needs a dead-blow hammer, it was one of my first projects as an apprentice.

He makes contact and then turns in a specific distance from that contact point. The first face is at a random place in space, the 2nd and 3rd are set by the protractor. The next 3 are just by spacing against the bar up against the face of the chuck. Straight forward but still very smart.
What’s not clear to me is how far into the piece do you advance the cutter when creating the faces of the hexagon, without doing the math. I must be missing a detail in the “bucket chemistry” mentioned here 😉
@@toddz8579 yep. You just cut them all to the same depth. That is all you need for a hexagon, 6 cuts to the same depth, and indexed somehow in 60 degree steps.
Interessante, porém perigoso! E o avanço for alto e a ferramenta travar na peça, ela pode se soltar e acertar a cabeça do torneiro. Serviço específico para fresadora e não para torno !!!

Unfortunately, he forgot to take a measurement somewhere, and then turn half of his hex width from each face. Then the outer contour would be good enough for a nut.
Interesting but ever had one of those spacer bars pop out at you when you start up!? Centrifugal force is a wonderful thing. 😮
Intersting technique.
I would be scrared of that hexagonal bar.

Very interesting. Enjoyed watching. I was a machinist for years but never saw this.
Brilliant. May not be to the .0001 but would be great for a shade tree guy like myself putting flats on a turnbuckle or something. Love it

Хордите на шестогама никога по този начин няма да са еднакви,ти на фреза с деференциал пак трудно ще ги получиш камили ,по този начин на струг.

Yes, the "trick" to making a hexagon is to use your handy 60-degree angle piece. Who would've thought of doing that? Very original.
For beginners/hobbyists in machining wihout a lot tolling it is a valuable idea how to make things.
Absolutely great thank you
Fantastic sir , what kind of carbide tool you are using ? Many thanks
Great way of doing it

Must have used the wrong plastic "machinist" triangle...I actually moved my head when he started that lathe with that dodgy "precision" setup jig.

You should explain how you proceed to obtain a regular hexagon with 6 identical faces and whose axis coincides with that of the starting cylinder.
He doesnt.
This is the equivalent of "bucket chemistry" in machining.
The best you get is a HSO 😁

His chatter was getting too bad. A problem with the tool or the tool post, rigidity is the issue.
Probably no more stick out available on the tool. At the small remaining diameter chatter should not be a problem.
Very clever. But having that bar stick out past the chuck is just a stupid unnecessary safety hazard.
Научись сначала резцы точить и отрезать 😅
