I grew up on the DS port, and I still find amazing replay value to this day. I had just as much fun playing the DS version than anyone would playing the N64 version.
But when I first got it, I had no clue why it was called Mario 64. Back then I had no idea what a N64 was.

While I played the N64 first before the DS one, once the DS copy was released I first noticed that there more characters that you could choose from. From Yoshi to Luigi and then to Wario, I noticed that the content was increased dramatically to include more things to do!
More worlds, more characters, more side missions, things to do, places to go! Oh My! Textures and models are improved/added to make things more modern and individual and more identifiable, for instance Mario now looks more like how he was in the box art.
But people who seem to be clinging to the original for the sake of nostalgia seem to be missing the point here.
Sure there is a change in resolution here and its all noticeable when viewing through capture footage of it being played through TH-cam and it being all stretched out and ugly and UN-anti-aliased. Nintendo knew what they were doing and its the same company that brought you the previous Mario 64 installation.
What this is, is a building upon an already established game, improving and updating what you may have already seen, but adding so much more. A re-release of a loved classic that even had people of the 90's fan base being re-engaged and invigorated to play what could have been in the original.
Point here is that if were to choose between the updated and the original, at least the DS version would keep me more busy. And heck, it even has multiplayer.

I loved the original 64 version when I was a kid but the remake is great too. I don't understand why there is a war here over which is "better". They are nearly the same game, the newer version just puts on some polish and nice features on an already great game, and the original IS that great game and the reason why the remake even exists.

      It's not that simple.
I love the look of the new character models, and new content, even if I miss the original lighting. But what happened to the controls? The DS version has, by far, the worst controls of any Nintendo developed Mario game. You can only choose between the same 4 way d-pad cross that was originally designed to play Game & Watch Donkey Kong, or scratching at the screen with no touch feedback at all.
Didn't we put these kinds of bad 3d control schemes to rest with Bubdy 3d? And no points awarded for pointing out the DS didn't have an analog controller, when Nintendo made the decision to exclude it themselves. It's the original reason why the Mario games ended up regressing to a 2d format.

    Simple and direct:
DS: More detailed modeling and effects, more far view, more objects, so much jagged edges.
N64: Best resolution, only this :)

DS- CPU speed:67 Mhz and 4mb of ram.
N64- CPU speed:94 Mhz and 8mb of ram (expansion pak).
I think its impressive how good the DS version looks even if its hardware its not as powerfull as the N64.
But then again Super Mario 64 is not exactly a tecnical prowess to show what the N64´s hardware could do, At least not compared to other N64 games like F-zero X, Majoras Mask or Perfect Dark.

    • @KeyToTime
      @KeyToTime 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's more to it than just clock speed and amount of ram. Ram speed and latency will come into it as well as CPU architecture. DS CPU might be easier to programme for example.
The DS is 32bit N64 is obviously 64bit. There are so many differences between the two you can't really make a comparison, they just handle things differently. The fact that the 64 used cartridges makes a big difference alone.
Generally though the 64 has the edge when it comes to resolution, colours and anti-aliasing. It also has better sound; capable of Dolby Pro Logic I surround.
The DS has polygon count and texture size.
The fact that the DS is running in a much smaller resolution means that there is less stress on the hardware and it runs at a higher frame rate.
Personally I prefer the 64, nice smooth graphics, no jagged edges and you can sit on a sofa and play with a controller on the TV.

What's funny is that they made a complete improvement to the Super Mario 64 on a 32 bit handheld console, this is probably because they didn't waste so much polygons on each individual model

Nintendo probably should have included support for texture filtering, it made games look worse than they could have. Hell, I played PSP games on an emulator and tried it with near pixel filtering instead of Linear and they looked substantially worse off for it.

    • @Shikadi297
      @Shikadi297 7 ปีที่แล้ว

MetroidJunkie Yup, as well as many other examples. An Intel CPU running in 32 bit mode will outperform an ARM CPU running in 64 bit mode at the same clock speed. The Wii U will outperform the GC even though the GC is 128 bits and the WiiU is 32 bits. Plenty of other examples too, but there are so many other factors like cache, pipeline depth, out of order execution, branch prediction, bus speed, clock speed, number of floating point units, etc.

It's tough to say. Mario 64 has better hardware, but didn't know how to implement it at the time and this was also the plumber's first 3D experience. In Mario DS the hardware is worse, but the textures and models are given a much better revision due to the changes and fixes on Mario's design and other characters'. And everything is layed out better and looks more realistic. If both games were switched around then N64 for sure, but DS has many more features. If you want good sounding music and nostalgia then get 64; but if you want more gameplay options, refined textures and portability then get DS

Coming from someone who enjoyed the original before playing through the remake, I can say I like the N64 version better. I was one of the first people to get a DS with the Metroid Prime demo and got Mario 64 DS at launch, and I was stoked for it. I have gotten all 150 stars on the remake and 120 stars on the original more times than I can remember, but I do know I've done it more times on the DS version than on the original.
Playing through the DS version for the first time, so many things seemed off. I didn't particularly like the addition of the characters, though I didn't mind it. I thought it made it more tedious. And all the additions were okay, but again, I never cared for them much. The silver star levels and extra rabbits added some interesting search-and-find stuff. But who seriously wants to keep walking in and out of the castle hundreds of times with Yoshi just to find that last silver rabbit? (A technique I figured out on my own before I saw it surfaced on the internet)
But the biggest thing that bugged me was how RIDICULOUSLY easier the DS version was. Mario could jump a heck of a lot higher, his wall jump required no skill whatsoever, and it just seemed more like a little kids game. Some of the hardest stars to get in the original were extremely easy in the remake, and many of them you could just cheat your way to by backflipping or triple jumping with Luigi or by wall jumping extraordinarily high with Mario instead of doing it the way you were originally supposed to. It just felt like they tweaked too much from the play mechanics. All the magic I remembered from playing the original was completely gone. And after going back and playing the original again, it was definitely a more enjoyable experience.
The DS port was more boring in my opinion, and way too easy. Plus, there's just something about playing on a TV with big speakers that makes it ALL more worth it.
Yes, the DS version has "better graphics" because they used the updated modern character models. You have to remember though that the original Mario 64 DEFINED the 3D Mario character models. They had no source material to take from other than Super Mario World.

I prefer the DS version because it has way more things to do. It has multiplayer battles, more stars, more missions, mini-games, more characters, better models, some cool glitches, bunnies are added. :3 Also let's not forget new secret areas. :)
I have not played the N64 version and the only way I can play that is from the Wii Shop, however I don't have enough stars to try it. By the looks of it, it's got less stars and less features then the DS version, however it's got some missions that never made it into the DS remake. Not only that, it's got way more glitches for me to try out. :D
I'll just wait and see if it ends up on the E-Shop store for Wii U... by the time I get enough stars to get it on the Wii Store the store will close down...

What do you mean there's no point buying Wii games? There's great games, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Brothers Wii, Mario Kart Wii (It's still enjoyable offline) and many more!
Personally I find it great still and I do miss offline but it's gone and never coming back.

I didn't say that the games needed to be hacked, But the wii has ended it's support and etc. Also there is no more online as the online support has ended. I know that supporting the company is good and all, but all there is, is used games that mostly just go to those who are reselling. Wii games aren't freshly produced anymore. You don't really have to hack it. But hacking it will bring more life into the system, All dem hombrews to be played. Lots of people have made really good stuff for the homebrew audience.

      1. Analogue control 2. Nicer Aesthetics 3. Smoother, cleaner graphics. Yes the DS version has more polygons, characters, levels (only because SM64 was Nintendo's first 3D game) but it is also missing a tonne of the effects and of course that analogue control that made the original show stopping!

lol graphics is nothing over the Adventure. if you played Banjoo kazooie, konker's bad fur day, Donkey kong 64 etc you will now what i mean. the N64 basically was the generation that put a stop to the big High score based games and made the brakethrough on how to have fun in games instead of getting annoyed at that you couldn't beat your highscore. Flappy bird is such an example people rather wanna bash their phones in rather than have fun with it. you could basically say it's because of game like those mentioned that we have the genres of games we have today. and just make bad reboots like the DS version is a sorry excuse because nintendo tried to relive that glory time again. as far as the console producers have been it's been nintendo= living in the past, Xbox= living in the Present and the Playstation= looks at the future.

100% the N64 version, for the pure reason of having much better controls.
I owned the DS version and the story seemed really good and the extra use of characters were exciting but I had to stop half way through because controlling 3D characters with a D-Pad just didn't work. What made it worse was I played it on my 3DS and pushing the joystick far still caused the character to walk. I would love it if they re-released it for the 3DS, making use of the control stick (like Mario 3D Land)

Funny thing, Ocarina of Time was made on a heavily modified SM64 engine. It still has some left over textures like inside the castle walls and the L is Real 2401 texture that is used in Dodongo's Cavern. A lot of N64 games did this, Majora's Mask was a modified OoT engine, Perfect Dark was a heavily modified GoldenEye 007 engine, and so on, but they weren't the same like games are now, they had differences that were noticeable and were reasonable.

And the shitty pixel count of the DS version. I'm not nostalgia-blind, as I had the DS version far before I ever played the original. The original is what got me to actually like the game, though. It also sucked ass holding Y to run.

TheBoltMaster No, not nostalgia. It's because it's their opinion, and because. On some points, it is. Sure you can bring up the mini games, and sure you can bring up the larger cast of characters, but I feel like SM64 has more charm to it than the ds does. I know, because I own both versions. Like, in the N64 version, Mario can use any power up he likes. In the DS version, the power ups are restricted to only certain characters, which takes away a bit of the freedom the N64 version held. Also, there's a map on the bottom screen to tell you where the star is. To me, this takes away the feel of adventure and actually *finding* stars instead of the game telling you where to find it. Same with the red coin tips Bob-Omb buddies give you. If you have DS version on the ds rather than the 3ds, then you know how it feels to play a 3d game with a D-Pad. It's not all that fun. Now, there are some things the ds version does better, like the Mario wall jump, but I feel like it's not enough to trump the Original Game. The original game is better (in my opinion) also because of the little things. Like when Mario gets a star, he says"Here we go!" on beat, like it's some sort of jingle, while on the DS version, he just says it immediately after he freaking touches the star and it just feels a bit rushed. On the N64 version when Mario finishes a level, he takes off his hat and neatens up his hair, and if he doesn't have his hat he searches himself for it and gets disappointed if he doesn't have it, while in the DS version after finishing a level, all the characters do this stiff generic pose, which also feels lazy, I don't know what Mario does without this hat though, mainly because in the DS version, I never bothered, mainly because it didn't feel as fun. The N64 version it had Mario as the protagonist, mainly because it was Super *Mario* 64. In the ds version, it felt like Yoshi was the main character in Mario's game. The DS version has more levels and minigames. The original game has more charm and makes people want to finish it. The DS version is "meh" in my opinion. I feel like you can have all these new flashy things, but if thee's no love and charm put into it, it's as good as garbage. I feel like the only way I'd like the ds version is because of nostalgia. But after playing the original, then the DS version, it felt like a downgrade. We all have our opinions on things, and on what we like, so please, make sure before you make a comment, it's nothing offending people's opinion unless it's bad and needs to be addressed.

I have to say the original is much better. It kinda sucks too because the DS version looks much better and has more content, but the controls and camera in the DS version just completely suck. I've died so many times in the DS version where I wouldn't have in the 64 version simply because of the bad controls/camera. Also the fact to use certain abilities you HAVE to play as a certain character, like having to use slow ass wario, just to turn metal, which sucks even worse since not only is wario slow, the water makes you slower in the levels you actually need metal wario for. While I can definitely see the plusses the DS version gives, and I play both back and forth, the N64 version doesn't make me want to pull my hair out nearly as much.

      Epic Furry I know right!
I have gotten all stars in the n64 version and I decided to give this a go and I am enjoying it but it also frustrates me when I die due to crappy controls.
I want to do a long jump and instead I do a ground pound into a pit of doom!
I am walking straight then the camera turns slightly left by itself and then Mario decides to walk off the freaking edge of the map!
I really wish they waited for the 3ds to make this. Because this is a game i really wanted to enjoy more then I currently am...
The features are nice and some of the graphics look amazing (bowser) but the controls make me wonder how Nintendo could release this on a system without a analog stick or slider nub...also I really hate the run movement being assigned to a button because sometimes I will be walking up a slanted are and have Mario just stand there or walk super slow.
Also using this game on the 3ds doesn't make the controls better it still controls like it's being used with a D pad even though it's not!
Other then this small rant though it is a very fun game, It could have been a lot better if they just waited though.

  • @diebyeguy
    @diebyeguy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Let's be honest, although the n64 specs may be slightly better than a DS. It's clear that developers by this time knew how to utilize a game systems power to bring out its full potential. As the DS version surely looks better. Let's just face it, and I'm saying this as the n64 being my favorite system of all time. However…, graphics don't make the game. While the DS version may look a bit better the n64 definitely feels better when you are playing it. Since you have a joystick and many more buttons to work with the n64's controls feel a bit more solid. Due to the tight controls and it simply being the original groundbreaking game, the n64 wins. The DS version loses in just about every area except graphics. Graphically it clearly has the n64 beat. But again there is much more to a game than graphics.
    Better looking version (graphically): DS
    Superior version overall: N64

I had a Playstation back in the day and I didn't really have any friends with an N64, or any friends for that matter, so I never really had an opportunity to play a lot of these awesome Nintendo games until years later. But I always had a Nintendo handheld, and this was the very first game that I got on my original DS and I love it, love it to this day, I was actually surprised when I found out that Luigi and the others weren't in the original, it all felt so seamless.

This depends.Whereas physics were mostly kept intact, there were a few changes. In DS characters have actual inertia in their jumps,so they were more affected by moving platforms.Along with that, wall jumping is considerably easier in DS version. The main reason people complained about the controls was due to the D pad,and how you had a run button to accommodate limited control.People (like me) who are used to playing 3D games with a D pad or Keyboard didn't have that issue.Another complaint for DS was lower resolution and realistic textures that looked washed out.People say textures are lower quality, but in reality N64 used simple colors for models even smaller texture wise.Ds has 32x64 to 128x256 but N64 was 16x16 to 64x64

    N64...
No matter how I look at it, the DS sucks...
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    NDS.
GAMEPLAY: Same as N64 but only split in to 4 characters.
    For example:
    Yoshi: Easy Mode.
Mario: Standard Mode, and given the ability to use the Wing Cap.
Luigi: Standard Mode, and as always he slips and slides around with the ability to flutter in the air and uses the Invisibility Cap.
Wario: Hard Mode I guess? Well it's kinda expected from a power character, and he uses the Metal Cap.
And the map on the bottom screen makes it really FUCKING easy to find the star, the red coins and the silver stars.
CONTROLS: D-Pad... To be honest, it was okay but one problem, the shoulder buttons break really easy so there was a high chance you couldn't progress any further in the game.
MUSIC: It's the same I guess.
GRAPHICS: I personally don't like it as much as the N64, it was pixelated and it was darker themed :/
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    N64
GAMEPLAY: It's the same as the DS but with less unlockable stuff.
CONTROLS: Analog Stick! No run button needed.
    MUSIC: Yeah no fucking change.
GRAPHICS: Colourful and bright (DS was darker).

Nintendo 64: Better use of lighting and goureaud shading, thus giving a more realistic looking. Also, N64 had antiliasing back then.
Nintendo DS: Better textures and much improved polygon models. Let's admit Peach, Mario, all minibosses, Bowser and practically ALL other models, including goombas, koopa troopas, etc look WAAAAAY better in SM64DS.

So i havent played this game yet, but most people perfer the n64 version over the ds version for the sole, though understandable fact that the controls are wonky because of the d pad. But if you play it on the 3ds cant you just use the circle pad? Im genuinely asking because if so i perfer the 3ds circle pad over the n64 analog stick.

n64 has the best sound and had less jaggies, while ds had more in terms of polygon count, 3d objects, and more characters. the ds also added in terms of more missions and side quests (such as the white rabbits) If there is a second remake, let's keep the best of the two and add waluigi. (seriously, we need an explanation of who he is and what he's after, and even more is the fact we would like to see how he plays as a platformer character.)
