@@jfender8023 Have you written a solo that's as iconic as Fade to Black, Creeping Death, The unforgiven, One, Ride the Lightning, Sanitarium, Master of Puppets? Exactly.
So true - this is entertaining but really important, too. I've heard from musicians I've always loved and wondered about but haven't heard a lot from, like the bassist from STP!
Rick proyects respect and when you proyect that, you are gold. When you have the hability to listen, like really listen theres nothing better than that.
Same. I learned guitar around 95-96 (I was 13 though lol) and spent so much time learning Metallica and Kirk lines. Now that I’m older I’ve been going back to a bunch of those solos and stuff that I could never play back then and learning them.
Rick is a great listener. Such a good host. So calm and patient and waits for the perfect moment to open a new vein into the conversation without without controlling the flow. He just gives it shape. The rest is up to the guest.
In 83 I had just turned 17. I was in my first band. We played Maiden and Priest songs. Sabbath!!! KILL EM ALL CAME OUT. Changed my path forever. I'm still gigging heavy music. Kirk =legend
That's kinda funny because a little to do with Kill'em all other than laying down solos. LOL. There is a cool interview with him on youtube about recording kill em all and there are pictures of recording process. Its pretty wild.
Yeah man I was a couple years younger but very similar story. Remember all the new metal coming out back then? Mercyful Fate, Metallica, Fates Warning, Slayer, it just kept getting better and better every year, every new release, it was an amazing time to be a guitarist in a band back then, or just a metal fan.
Rick, I must thank you for this. As a lifelong Metallica fan, Kirk is one of the main reasons I picked up the guitar. I’ve never seen an interview where he is as relaxed and comfortable as this one. Usually when he’s interviewed with his band mates, he’s quiet and reserved. It’s nice to see him speak so much and share his thoughts. Thank you Rick!
This. Exactly this. Every interview, he just sits to the side, and as others have said, he lets Lars and James be the voice of the band. That's fine. I remember when I met them on the Black album tour, and I just got the impression that there was more to Kirk than what you saw in interviews. So down to earth, and appreciative of the fans. I love this about him, and this interview is pure joy to watch. Thank you, Rick!
This is hands down the best interview that's been done with Kirk. For such an influential guitarist over the last 40yrs, he's not said that much before, well done Rick.
Love this interview. Kirk always comes across as salt of the earth, a kind and genuine human, no attitude. Born to a Filipina mother and white-American father and raised in working-class El Sobrante in the San Francisco East Bay, he's never forgotten his roots. I'm so glad Kirk's alive in the world! It also makes sense that he and Rob Trujillo are great pals.
Born to not only a White-American father, but a merchant mariner. Merchant sailors of the WW2 era, which Kirk's father was, are extremely special. Extremely. They are not technically - not legally - actually in the military. Yet they suffered, in WW2, greater casualty rates than any of the American, British, Canadian or other western Allied military branches. If they went to the Arctic, as many did, carrying Lend-Lease items to the embattled Soviets, it was worse still. Woodie Guthrie was also a WW2 era merchant sailor and may have even been on the same ship as Kirk's father. If he'd been lost, Metallica would be a very very different band!
I love this new phase of Rick, doing all these great interviews. We might not realise now, but in 20-30 years from now, when most of these musicians will not be playing or not be around anymore, this will be pure gold. This is an historical document as important as their records.
It’s been said before. The KEY thing I take from all these interviews is the SPACE you give the artist to actually TALK is unlike any interviewer I’ve seen do. Kirk can talk for 15-20 minutes with only one or two sentences coming out from you. Killer interview.
Great minds think alike. I know Kirk made a lot of points I've heard Rick, and a lot, if not all of the artists he's interviewed, has made. So he let him go to town. I would have enjoyed more stories from the old days, but I could have listened to that all day.
I hard agree. Too many interviewers make the interview about themselves and not the thoughts and insight’s of the interviewee. I appreciate how humble Kirk is. His shoes are ridiculous but he seems chill and like he just loves guitars and playing them.
This is the best interview I have ever seen with Kirk. Rick’s style of letting the respondee talk without interruption is so rewarding, plus his knowledge about music and tech... Without Lars and James in the room taking over the conversation you see the multitude of depths in this old hero of mine since 35 years back. Now I see why Brian May was nervous about being interviewed by Rick! 👍🏻
@RickBeato it's so true...guitarists, songwriters and musicians in general just always seem so comfortable obviously realising they don't have to "dumb things down" or just feeling like they have to advertise whatever. The respect that always comes across in both directions is so wonderful to watch. My 4 and 5 year olds LOVE Battery, Seek and Destroy, I got demanded to turn up King Nothing yesterday...
It dawned on me that one reason Rick's interviews are so good, is that it just one musician having a "conservation" with another musician. Rick gets such a relaxed, candid feel from these great artists, that its a joy to listen to and absorb all that is revealed for us to enjoy !
The problem is that other people call him a great guitarist just because he was the right person for the band at at that time. Those are different things. And it is annoying.
I thnk it primarily comes from a musical standpoint and from overcorrection. He's a great guitar player but not the greatest of all time, so people attempt to correct the narrative by pointing out his flaws, which leads to people who don't entirely understand to simply just say "he's the worst ever and got lucky" without delving further than pentatonic scale and wah-wah pedals. I think at one point there was hatred towards him from Megadeth fans for the usual reasons, but even Dave Mustaine was more bitter that he'd been replaced in general and not who he was replaced with. That old feud settled down a long time ago anyway beyond interviewers prodding Mustaine to get him riled up. Lars tends to be the lightning rod for everything else because of And Justice for All's mixing or being the face of the anti-Napster campaign. Whenever I see him interviewed Kirk always seems like he's just joined the band and he's super stoked to be able to play music for a living. He brought a more artistic and melodic side to the band that James Hetfield ignored at the time. I'm sure Lars Ulrich appreciated it though since they as a duo were responsible for using Andres Serrano works on the covers of Load and Reload. Personally I think the greatest thing he ever did was make those green Jazz III picks. Easy to see when it's dark, feel great and I love the little cutout.
Kirk has such a nice way about him. He plays aggressive music & solos. But there is an uncanny tenderness about him which I've always found extremely endearing. The way he said that in his last show he would make sure to try and make eye contact/acknowledge people from every age group was just a beautiful to thing to hear. What a great guy, and so extremely humble and grateful for it all.
I can say he wasn't lying. My brother and I went to their shows in Detroit in early Nov. and we were right outside the stage (not snake pit, but still on the floor) and Kirk, James, and Rob all pointed out to the crowd, Kirk even pointed at me when I gave him the devil horns. My brother and I both ended up getting guitar picks that Kirk threw to the crowd too. Hella awesome first concert experience.
I went to their show in 2014 here in São Paulo and, during and justice for all he made eye contact with me and laughed he saw me totally lose my mind. One of the best moments of my life
Why is this interview so great? Rick let’s the interviewee lose themselves by allowing them to speak. Not once did Rick interrupt a thought Kirk had. Multiple times Rick allowed himself to be interrupted by Kirks own thoughts and there was no ego in it. Free flowing. Truly perfect.
Kirk is freaking awesome. Even though he kicked me in the head in 1985😂. Me and this dude were clawing our way onto the stage to stage dive. In the process, the clown next to me pulled kirks cord. Causing Kirks guitar to be pulled and messing him up. Also partially unplugged. Kirk looked down at both of us not knowing who was the culprit. I was the unfortunate recipient of a Chuck Taylor to the grille. 😂. I went to school the next day with a Chucky T waffle mark on my face bragging to everyone that Kirk kicked my ass . 🤣 So for everyone talking about Kirk being a gentle soul, well, he’s still metal AF. 🤘🏻. No hard feelings Kirk. I still love you almost 40 years later!
@@larryb4598what you just said doesn't make someone a nobody. This guy is one of the most famous guitarist in the world. Regardless of your opinion of him, he is not a _"nobody"_ my dude. The *VAST* majority of Metallica fans as well as metal-heads have been wanting this interview for a long time, don't piss on our parade homie Larry.
Ola Englund has done some good interviews. These interviews are reminiscent of the work that Matt Pinfield did many years ago. Also, That Metal Show had interesting guests over the years although their format wasn't my favorite.
I've waited for 26 years for this interview. This guy was my idol. I picked up the guitar because of him. To me, he was and is the coolest guitarist of all time. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
And one of the most genuine guys ever. I love how he comes across as basically the same excited kid who first picked up guitar decades ago. I’ve always thought that whenever I’ve seen him in behind the scenes footage etc, there’s no ego to him whatsoever
@@TheHulksMistress You're right. When I went to hmv store in London for launching Hardwired. He and Rob were so calm sitting the middle singing albums. The most exciting experience of my life shaking hands and talking to my childhood idols. I was so speechless that my dream was coming true.
He's such the opposite of what the stereotype of a heavy metal lead guitarist is in most people's minds. I know as a metal head that in reality most metal heads are actually big nerds who love music, horror, music gear, etc. But the regular-joe out there thinks metal heads are the exact opposite of how Kirk is. He's so soft spoken and super nice even though his guitar is belching out evil sounding noise. Lol. If you go back and watch the behind the scenes in the studio when Metallica was recording the black album you be laughing your ass off at how everyone is arguing and is jumping down each other's throats... Then Kirk says as soft as a mouse _"hey guys, can't we just get along and go back to playing our songs?"_ and everyone just ignores Kirk and continues to scream at each other and slam doors. Lmao. If you watch the footage from back then it really feels like Kirk is a child watching his parents argue. I can only recall ONE TIME Kirk started an argument. And he never raised his voice and in the end he was SO RIGHT. He was arguing with Lars and James about not putting guitar solos in every song. Lars and James said that guitar solos are outdated and that Metallica needs to get with the times _(this is in the late 90s/ early 2000s)_ and follow many Nu Metal bands and have little to no solos. It's true that solos wasn't popular in Nu Metal at that time, but Kirk said _"if we dont have solos like the other bands then that will date the album to this time period"_ - that was paraphrased from memory but he was so correct. James and Lars couldn't have been more wrong. Lol
Kirk Hammet is one of the coolest famous musicians on this planet. He’s so down to earth. He’s one of us. He’s so passionate about music. He was one of the people who inspired me to play. The way he talks about things so honestly and candidly is beautiful. No hulking ego there. He isn’t afraid to look like a nerd. What a cool soul. My guy… i will never be able to afford a Greeny- but it makes me feel good that there are people like Kirk Hammet who would let me play his for 3 mins. What a guy.
Kirk is the opposite to Mustaine and it's so amazing. Metallica would break up with Mustaine sooner or later and this guy is the balance between 3 genius like James, Lars and Cliff.
@@Weeepaaa exactly. As I said to somebody else on here- he’s like the Ringo of the band who gets along with everyone and can sort of bring everyone together
I met kirk in the 90's when I was 15 and he was talking with us like he had known us his whole life. I've still got my blue Jean jacket that he signed and a paper with all 4 autographs. I was a 15 yr old kid in heaven meeting the guys I looked up to in high-school
What a legend. So humble and gracious. What a guy! He has no idea of the legend status he has and its refreshing to hear someone of his calibre talking so freely and openly. One of the best interviews youve done yet Rick. Thank you.

I can’t read music nor play anything. I love listening to music I don’t understand half of the technical stuff Kirk is talking about but I just find him mesmerizing and fascinating to listen to he’s a great interview subject
Kirk is surprisingly talkative. We're all used to Lars taking the lead in Metallica publicity matters, but Kirk has so many interesting tales to tell. And I love how there's always room for techy stuff (eq, picking etc) in your interviews, which most traditional interviews never make room for. Wonderful stuff Rick :)
Rick is going to be the most influential musicologist of this century and one of the greatest catalysts in helping to inspire the next generation of artists. Thank you for doing this!
Agreed, and a big part of that is because he lets the musicians talk without interrupting them. Rick's interviews are like music itself; he lets the musicians play, or in this case talk and teach.
The passion and unpretentiousness - also coming through in his guitar playing examples, have really impressed me about Kirk Hammett in this interview. Yet most impressive is that he appears to be clear-thinking, clean and sober headed and still in touch with his inner child…. that is a huge achievement for a member of a worldwide rock band phenomenon.
EXACTLY and he is at the top of the pile but is still like us all when we where snotty teens first getting into music, HIS music mostly lol But he is still one of us even tho he is a guitar GOD. No bullshit, genuine nice guy who just loves rocking out!!
Absolutely amazing interview. Massive props for just letting him TALK. Kirk seems to be letting 40 years of thought out all at once and it’s AWESOME. So kick ass
I was managing sales at Mesa/Boogie the day that Metallica came in to try some amps for the first time in Petaluma CA. They were totally cool, and Cliff played this long bass solo there in the demo room. All the sales guys came in to marvel at what was happening. Who knew how unspeakably huge, how Great, and how culturally significant they would become. Bravo!!!
As a serious Metallica mega fan for almost 40 years this is the best interview of Kirk by far. He is so incredibly passionate and genuine he seemed to be on the edge of tears throughout this interview.
@@BannedPhotoshop I am only speaking from my personal exchanges with him as a teen nearly 30 years ago. I can totally see how that would be hard to fathom based on media, post Napster thing etc. But I will say he was funny and super cool to me.
Metallica fan for about 32 years. I love to see Kirk talk about this stuff and show how much he appreciates what they have accomplished and how appreciative he is for all Metallica fans! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yea as soon as cliff comes up or some other topics he will be in tears, he as real of a person as you can get, lots of other famous people out there fake as fuck, not kirk of course.
The fact that Kirk speaks highly of Dime and turning down an offer to copy Dime’s signature wah pedal says a lot about him. Legend honoring a legend!❤️ Salute and respect to you Kirk!
Fantastic interview, thank you. I took my mum to see Metallica for the first time this year, she's 83 and absolutely loved it, so yes, the music does indeed span the generations.
I have so much respect for Kirk because he has always kept it real and true to himself. When he was arguing with Lars about solos - that was an epic discussion. And Kirk crying about breaking Greeny…. That takes a real special person to tell that story and breaking down. The dude is so damn authentic.
I love that he's a fan of The Hu, and watching his awe and honor that this Mongolian band would cover a Metallica tune. His enjoyment of music and musicmaking is so quick and so real that his pleasure is catching, just to hear him talk about it, and Rick gave him the space in which to do just that. This was a great interview.
And THIS is why this channel has almost 4 million subscribers. Well done Rick! Your knowledge and appreciation of music combined with humility sets you apart from all the others on TH-cam. You deserve all the success you’ve achieved. Now back to the show…
What a legend. This is probably the first time Ive been able to hear him speak freely, and really opening up. Being vulnerable. Rick, may you be blessed with more success. Thank you!❤
Yeah true. Lars and James don't usually let Kirk speak out much, and they've been treating him that way since 1983. Kirk usually just lets the music do the talking.
thank you, rick, truly! i don't think i've ever seen kirk so free to be himself, so open and animated. he gets better with time. i first heard them when master of puppets came out and they're still my #1.
When I was 19 or 20 I was in a used record store in Hollywood and Kirk walked in to talk to the guy behind the counter. He must've seen my jaw drop open because he smiled and gave a friendly nod. Now I'm watching this at 53, really happy that one of my favorite musicians really is the humble, friendly guy I took him for. What a fantastic interview.
This is, hands down, one of the best interviews I’ve ever watched…as a guitar player, as a musician and as a Metallica fan. Very entertaining and insightful. You can tell just how much Kirk was completely at ease and engaged throughout the entire conversation. Well worth the watch. 👍
If you think it is, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Sadly we are not allowed to force other people to have the same (the best) opinion as us, but at least we can make a choice not to give a single fuck about theirs. :)
40:28 - 40:44 I think Kirk's words here will always stick with me. Seeing the tears in his eyes as he expresses how music impacted his life is breathtaking.
Kirk is a true artist. Each Metallica song is a painting, and Kirk has a very unique brush to apply to their music. What a great interview, thanks Rick and Kirk!
Right ?! His solos are so distinct, and have so much character. They’re never just random noise (like so many other metal leads tend to churn out). And they are all unique and immediately recognizable. Like you could hear some random new snippet for the first time and you’ll automatically know that it’s Kirk . I always felt Dimebag had this ability as well. SO freakin great 🤘🏻🙌🏻
Kirks enthusiasm for music shines through, after a long career full of success it’s so wonderful to see his love for Music is still there. Rock on Kirk!! 🤟🏼
Kirk inspired me to really start playing and now I have 9 guitars. Some people may not like him, but anyway people begin with a main guitarist and he was mine. Metallica and mainly Kirk changed my life. Thank you guys for all the great work and I will be a metfan for life
This is like the gold standard type of interview for me. Playing songs, have the artist react, and also be able to play something to get points/thoughts across. Bravo to everyone involved with this.
This is the most open and relaxed I have ever seen Kirk Hammet in an interview. Kirk's passion for music and guitar is so infectious and inspiring, Listening to him speak about it makes you want to pick up guitar and start playing. I immensely enjoyed this interview and look forward to what Rick's doing next. Rick has become THE gold standard for music channels on youtube.
Kirk's absolute love and respect for Dimebag, and for Cliff after all this time, as well as the clear emotion that Kirk has for life are so heartwarming, and I'm going to give his album a listen.
rumor has it that James hated the fact that Jason was working on a side project before he left the band, and it was the reason WHY Jason quit. it is interesting that Kirk put out a side project, and James said nothing about it.
@@mylovesongs2429Lars and James eventually realized the mistake they made and how unfair it was to expect Jason or anyone to have no other creative outlet for things that do not fit into Metallica. They have discussed this publicly.
Metal IS therapeutic. In my teens I used to fall asleep to "And Justice For All" playing on my Sony Walkman. I don't mean that in a critical or negative way. My life was so chaotic that listening to that album every night calmed me down to the point where I could fall asleep peacefully.
Feels like Kirk has been waiting his whole life to be interviewed by Rick. He poured it all out. This says so much about Rick Biato what an amazing channel.
52 yo Lifelong Metallica Fan here. Best interview I have ever seen with Kirk. I LOVE how you gave him space and time to lay out his thoughts. I always knew Kirk was a deep soul. It was fantastic to see him have his own platform to speak his mind. Thank you Rick! Thank you Kirk!!
Was thinking the same thing! Kirk has the most to say and least time to say it all it seems. Very thoughtful and passionate dude who may have been overshadowed by the aggression of his scene.
Absolutely! This one blew my mind and personally connected with it artistically at the same time. I'd give anything to sit behind my drums in a room with Hammett!! 🤯🤩🤪🥰
I was amazed by Kirk’s humility and depth of thinking. And how openly he shared how he thinks about and makes music. Love Kirk more than ever. Thank for this interview Rick Beato. Fans cannot thank you enough. This one is for posterity.
I love that Rick's interviews are always centered around the music, NOT the controversy. For that reason, Kirk was the best member of Metallica to interview on his channel!!
I had the pleasure of interviewing Kirk and Cliff back in February 1985 while I was a college radio DJ. At that time underground Metal bands were trying to play as fast as possible with no regards to writing great songs, and fans were also worried about Metallica becoming "sell-outs" since they signed with a major label, Elektra. In our conversation about that I'll always remember Kirk saying that Metallica's main goal was to make "Good musical statements". I may not have liked all of their releases, but I always respected the chances they took. Their first 3 albums are on my desert island list, too.
@@stephanjones8424Who says they don’t like Load and Reload? They still play quite a few songs from those albums. I’m pretty sure Fuel is one of Hetfield’s favorite songs to play live. They’ve been playing some St. Anger stuff lately, too.
@@stephanjones8424 I like all those albums, they aren't classic metal, but they are good albums. (St. Anger I understand if you don't like the 00's Nu-Metal sound, but I do.)
Another unbelievable interview, Rick. Hearing guitar legends like Kirk, Nuno etc in their own words, being so humble and grateful is just mind blowing. Kirk is such a gentle man with a wonderful philosophy on music, the band and the influences that shaped him. Only Rick can get these guys in the zone to be so open and generous.
Kirk is such a cool soul. I love that he's excited that their music has become more accessible over time to the listener. When earlier audiences found it challenging. That he finds the positive side of that. Some artists would be irritated and their egoes bruised. But he's right, it's a great thing. It allows their music to keep inspiring people. Makes their music continuously a part of culture. Great way to look at it. Great interview Rick!
Kirk is a pure artist and completely authentic. Such a wonderful soul, it’s mesmerizing to hear him share so much. Awesome interview Rick, great conversation!
Every other interview with Kirk, he sounded really nervous with stops and starts in his speech. Here with Rick, he sounds relaxed and confident like the Kirk that those who know him must recognize.
I think some of that has to do with the venue. He’s sitting in a studio in front of some amps with his guitar. In his comfort zone, and after he starts holding his guitar, it’s even easier. Sometimes in life, I have felt more comfortable talking with my guitar in my lap than with nothing in my hands.
This interview was something really special. I had never heard Kirk talk like this and I've gained a new respect for him not as a guitarist or musician, but as a genuinely amazing human being. It seemed as though his voice was cracking up when he touched on his childhood and how he now sees himself as an older man. When he said "It's important for me to acknowledge the power of inspiration.", I felt it. I haven't listened to much Metallica after Justice, but that takes nothing away from the rest of their work and the intergenerational quality of it. Metallica has inspired countless young folk and I'm really thankful for it. I also got a huge kick out of him totally, unabashedly, owning his love for wah wah pedals! Long may you live, Kirk. \m/
I've read the magazine interviews, short video interviews and the documentary. And yet I still had no idea how much passion and emotion overflows from this man. I didn't think it was still possible, but I have a new level of admiration for Kirk Hammett. Thank you for this interview, Rick.
Such a long interview with Kirk is unprecedented. He usually doesn’t talk much during band interviews. I’m intrigued to learn more about his personality. Good job Rick. Thanks
Rick Beato … a personal hero of mine, could’ve interviewed Lars or James, but instead brings us in the room with Kirk. Fresh take. Fresh perspective. Fresh inspiration.
This stuff is always amazing to me... I used to read Guitar World magazine articles about this guy and try to figure out ride the lightning riffs in my room back in the late 90s...
Kirk is one of my heroes. Effortlessly cool and endlessly warm at the same time...a great musician, such a nice guy every time you hear him talk. And oddly enough, the older he gets the more he looks like my mother in law...
GREAT INTERVIEW Rick. Thank you! Kirk: Humble legend. Fun to hear him talk, you can hear the passion still after over 40 years. That's. true artist and lover of his craft.
This is the first real interview I've seen with Kirk. Getting strong ADHD/ASD vibes. Explains the creativity. Explains the difficult childhood. Explains his immersion into guitar. Explains the aversion to eye contact. Explains being a gear nerd. Explains being idea-driven. Explains the flighty story narratives. Kirk was my hero since I was 12yo, and remains to be so. Rock on dude.
The genuine humility of Kirk always appreciating the support of the fan base is a key element of Metallica's continued popularity. I am 70yo and discovered the musical genius of the band a couple years ago.
Oh man. I can’t imagine what it must be like to discover Metallica’s discography just now. I’d give anything to hear some of those albums for the first time again
Just found this. Deeply informative and inspiring. I love the way Kirk is so generous and free, and the way he conveys this material. I found it extremely enjoyable. Great interview brother!!!! Killer job!!!!❤
This is the best interview I think I've ever seen with Kirk and I love it. All of the introspection, and his talk about Greenie and the creative process... It's perfect. Thank you Rick, from a guy who largely became a guitarist as a result of Kirk and Clapton 30 years ago.
Man, he is a real musician. So happy to hear him giving props to Johnny Ramone, Phil Rudd, Gary Moore... also he speaks of rhythm, melody, arrangement, harmonics... I remember 1986 very well, I remember well when Master of Puppets came out, and what that was like. I got it, I liked it. He knows about the power of music, how it affects people, therapeutically, universally. He speaks of heavy metal as world music. He's brilliant. Great interview, Rick.
oh yeah, I was glad he mentioned the Hu, and their cover of Sad but true, which is actually heavier than the original, sad but true! XD seriously, it's one of the heaviest things I've ever heard, but they wouldn't have done it if Metallica hadn't written it first.

Rick and Kirk are the same age, well of course he would feel more comfortable talking to someone his own age, I would think.

Kirk is a wonderful human being. One of my favorites. Metallica fan for life
The Gibson interview Kirk did was fantastic as well...same passion and energy. I really enjoy his insights into everything.
He never stopped being a kid. Super humble dude who is clearly beyond grateful for the blessings he was given.
He is easily my favourite member from Metallica.

Getting here just now, he wasn't given anything, he earned it! : D
This is hands down the best interview that's been done with Kirk. For such an influential guitarist over the last 40yrs, he's not said that much before, well done Rick.
100%
What Genesis song was he playing?
For sure, much better than those stupid Gibson 30 minute interviews.
I didn’t know his mom is Filipina. Huh. Same as my kids.
100%
It's pure gold now!
And who else could do what he’s doing?? Rick, please keep it up!
Well said. I've watched all the interviews but that aspect never occurred to me. 👍
It’s been said before. The KEY thing I take from all these interviews is the SPACE you give the artist to actually TALK is unlike any interviewer I’ve seen do. Kirk can talk for 15-20 minutes with only one or two sentences coming out from you.
Killer interview.
100%. In addition to being a musical genius, Rick is a gifted interviewer.
Exactly, Kirk is not an extrovert at all, he's so verbal here because of Rick's genuine curiosity, enthusiasm and sincerity, soooo good.
Great minds think alike. I know Kirk made a lot of points I've heard Rick, and a lot, if not all of the artists he's interviewed, has made. So he let him go to town. I would have enjoyed more stories from the old days, but I could have listened to that all day.
I’ve noticed that it takes Kirk 15 minutes to complete a thought!!
So I guess it works out?
Well said! It’s great when Kirk gets the spotlight, seems like a guy you could have a beer with any day.

@@abrupt_oliver That's like 12 bucks; don't worry, dude :p
I don't know how anybody can hate on Kirk, even if you don't like his playing. He's one of nicest and most humble rockstars we've ever had.
People that hate him just do it for the sake of hating. I like him more the older I get
The problem is that other people call him a great guitarist just because he was the right person for the band at at that time.

Exactly!! ❤
Beautifully and accurately said. ❤
it's because Lars doesn't let the others talk that much. lol Hearing the other guys talking is fascinating.
The fact that what qualifies for a good interviewer nowadays is someone who doesn't interupt the person answering the questions is pretty sad.
In todays world, the interviewer wants all the limelight.
Lol

I love that Rick's interviews are always centered around the music, NOT the controversy. For that reason, Kirk was the best member of Metallica to interview on his channel!!
What controversy?
I met Kirk backstage at a velvet underground concert and he was such a nice guy
I had the pleasure of interviewing Kirk and Cliff back in February 1985 while I was a college radio DJ. At that time underground Metal bands were trying to play as fast as possible with no regards to writing great songs, and fans were also worried about Metallica becoming "sell-outs" since they signed with a major label, Elektra. In our conversation about that I'll always remember Kirk saying that Metallica's main goal was to make "Good musical statements". I may not have liked all of their releases, but I always respected the chances they took. Their first 3 albums are on my desert island list, too.
every album they have released to date is amazing!!!!!!
@brydoncordero5762 Load, Reload, Saint Anger? Really? Even they don't like those.
I always wondered how different the music would be if cliff was still alive.
Leper Messiah is such a groovy song. It’s also criminally underrated.
Kirk is an absolute sweetheart. Absolutely deserves all the success and accolades.
That’s because Rick is like a kick-ass rockin’ brother.
I'd say he's been working on his speech anxiety, stuttering and fluency. Good on him.
I noticed he sounded nervous and now about 10 minutes in, he seems to have chilled out. Maybe he's baked.
Yeah, I was a bit surprised. He is usually much less articulate.
Kirks a legend. I hope he recognizes the amount of people he’s inspired 🤟
He talks about recognizing this.
What a humble superstar. He appreciates where he came from and who helped them get there. Rick has some great interviews.
I've read the magazine interviews, short video interviews and the documentary. And yet I still had no idea how much passion and emotion overflows from this man. I didn't think it was still possible, but I have a new level of admiration for Kirk Hammett. Thank you for this interview, Rick.
Rick just sat back and let Kirk talk. Such a great interviewer. Thank you for all the great interviews.
Ive only seen a few interviews with Kirk.. What a genuine, lovely human being. Such a nice guy. What a legend.
such a beautiful soul, loved his story about Johnny Ramone, just imagine hanging out with them two wow
Well said. He's a true music legend in my book!
I freaking love Kirk even more after watching this. The guy has so much joy in him that it's contagious
Hands down the best Kirk interview, ever. He's such a sweet man and so open and innocent. I can't explain how much he and Metallica mean to me.
This stuff is always amazing to me... I used to read Guitar World magazine articles about this guy and try to figure out ride the lightning riffs in my room back in the late 90s...
This guy's a great interview. Good stories, no stumbling, knows exactly what he wants and needs to say!
Good job Rick.
Rick never ceases to surprise me.
So cool.
Kirk seems like such a humble and grateful guy.
Dead on. Also struggling to find the right words at times. I have ADHD and that is a big problem for me.
Most definitely
The genuine humility of Kirk always appreciating the support of the fan base is a key element of Metallica's continued popularity. I am 70yo and discovered the musical genius of the band a couple years ago.
Oh man. I can’t imagine what it must be like to discover Metallica’s discography just now. I’d give anything to hear some of those albums for the first time again
That's so awesome. It's never too late! I envy the ability to start with a clean slate and go through their albums for the first time.
Amazing interview!! improvising is vital and we need more of it in contemporary music! Kirk is absolutely right
Hey Kiko, how much did this guy influence you?
😂
Just found this. Deeply informative and inspiring. I love the way Kirk is so generous and free, and the way he conveys this material. I found it extremely enjoyable. Great interview brother!!!! Killer job!!!!❤
Kirk is awesome and so humble. With all of Metallica's accomplishments, Kirk still has this vibe like he will "make it" some day.
Exactly; he's the opposite of Mustaine, who's a narcissistic, bitter old man, sad to say.
True, and that's why they fired Dave and hired Kirk.@@colico14
Anyone who makes music is a real musician. That's literally the definition, and no amount of gatekeeping will change that.
