"Being of service. Helping people through their darkness. My flashlight works, sometimes it doesn't... and being able to say that out loud. It might be selfish, but it helps me stay grounded, and if it connects with someone else, then I'm serving my purpose." That hit me really hard. Much love to James, and to the rest of the band that quite literally defined my life.

So glad you shared this James. I’m 54 now and I have the same life long challenge to own my life and let go of the blame I put at my parents feet no matter how they chose to own their part or not. The irony is I wasn’t a Metallica fan in the 80’s and 90’s and it’s my 18 year old son who got me listening to you guys by playing your music on his guitars 24/7. Now looking back my son reminds me of you in the hair days. Haha Thanks brother.
May the Good Lord continue to bless James & all the Tallica boys. Almost 40 & these guys have been with me for a good chunk of that time. He's one of the most down to earth"rock stars" I believe ever. I can relate to alot of his struggles. Keep on keeping on 🤘🏼
This man has been my hero since I was ten years old. I’m forty now, and he’s even more of a hero to me now than ever before; for completely different reasons. If I were to say that to him in person, I’m sure it would make him feel awkward, so I never would. Instead, should I ever be lucky enough to meet him, I would simply shake his hand and say thank you. 🤘🏻😈🤘🏻 🙏🏻

Papa het is a legend him and Metallica have helped me through countless issues in my life.. I will always be grateful for Metallica! Never had the money or opportunity to see them in concert but I still am a life long fan at 42, I'm a homeless veteran now due to bad decisions.. but Metallica have given me strength.. Even in the worst of times!
Maybe it's God that has sustained you. He can and will and one day His will can bring you where you need to be in much better circumstances. Metallica will also be there for you to cherish.
This man has been my " idol " and inspiration since 1988 , 72 Seasons sounds so alive and vibrant and gives me hope for the future of our Band , James seems happy and healthy and that's all that matters! The new album kicking ass doesn't suck either ! Favourite track so far is Room of Mirrors, classic in the making!
I've grown up with Metallica and James has always been a rock and an inspiration to me. In my youth it was because he seemed bullet proof, like nothing could hurt him. I wanted to be that too. As the years have gone on and he's opened up about his vulnerabilities, so have I. He continues to be an inspiration to me.
It's comforting in its way to hear James say he's still trying to figure himself out. I'm in my mid-40s, certainly no where near being in a place in life and mentally where I want to be. I suppose one's whole life is the pursuit of that and you do what you can. Best of luck, James.
I first heard Metallica- Kill ‘Em All in 83 when I was 12 and in grade 6 haha ! ( I’m almost 52 now 🤟🏻😎🤟🏻 and still a headbanger 🤪🙂) I still love almost all metal music new or old. I’ve been super lucky over the years to see some unreal shows live ! seen Prong , Sepultura and Pantera in 1994. Such a Killer Show ! ( met Vinnie Paul in 2012 and had him autograph my ‘94 Far Beyond Driven tour concert shirt…18 years later 😄 Vin was really cool, friendly and funny ! 😊 also got to see Black Sabbath in 1999 at Ozzfest , and Ozzy solo 4x and tons more bands pretty much anyone you can list over the years, most of them 3 or 4 times . I have really been enjoying going deeper down the 🪣Buckethead 🤖 rabbit hole ( as I write this I think he’s at 500.+ !!! Albums! Bucketheadland Pikes series + about 80 or more other projects ?) it’s the greatest thing I’ve come across in the last 10 years or so ( maybe ever?) … that dude is so insanely good on a guitar! 🎸 I’ve played for 37 years myself at this point. To Anyone who has never heard his solo music.. You Absolutely Need To ! I can’t even begin to explain how incredible he is… Bucket 🪣 will quite literally Blow Your Mind ! an entire universe of different styles… and he can play them All… Extremely well!🎸🤟🏻🤯🤟🏻 Even after at least 10 years straight of playing his music every day… I am only continually even more amazed all the time at his skill on the 🎸axe 🪓 !
I just really discovered them this year after my son played me "No Leaf Clover" (I'm older than them). I'm now obsessed and have a LOT of material to go through!! Saw them last week and they were great. Saw Some Kind of Monster and cried several times. I dig their authenticity in addition to their talent and good looks.
This man. Listening to him is so therapeutic. He’s been through so much in his life, and even though I haven’t had a hard life, I’ve had moments of sadness and listening to Metallica has always helped. Hetfield’s lyrics just resonate.
James is like an uncle to me. His voice is soothing, his entire personality is amazing and the is such a kind and wholesome person. I could listen to him for hours. And, just mentioning it, my mum has a huge crush on him.
Respect James and the rest of the band so much. I couldn’t imagine the pressure on these guys for the last decades, they’ve dealt with it admirably and openly. I enjoy seeing their growth as people and as a band. Just my two cents worth. Even if they never played another note, I couldn’t be more thankful for everything.
As an AA member I´m feel really hopefull hearing James process. Theirs songs have a new meanning for me since I accepted my situation. Thanks James, thanks Metallica
Cheers to Steffan Chirazi for being such an important piece to the Metallica puzzle. He really does so much for, not only the fans, but for Metallica history in general. A lot of the insights we get into the band comes directly through his journalism.
Amen. Stefans ability to peel back the curtain is such a gift. Its amazing to see James answering these questions of vulnerability with such openness. Its a reminder that its OK to be weak at times because that leaves opportunities for growth mentally and spirituallly.
Everything I've been through in my life good, bad and indifferent James Hetfield has been in my ears to help me along. I am forever grateful for him (and the rest of the band) for that. James I love you as a musician and a person who is very open with your demons as I struggle with as well.
This man says so much in such simple words, yet poetic, humble and honest. Metallica speaks to me like no other band ever did. Metallica is not just the biggest band in the world, Metallica has loyal followers that will go through fire to hear what they will do next. Metallica is a spiritual entity, guiding you through the bull**it of life.
I love Metallica. Big shout out to James Hetfield. We are here to support you, Lars, Kirk and Robert. Not just the music, but for everything else as well. Thank you so much for introducing me to your badass music and metal in general. Metallica 4 life! 💯
Once again, Steffan knocks it out of the park with the deepest questions for the guys! Thanks for sharing and thank you James for being so open about the process for 72 Seasons!
James is such a legend! To be able to confront your demons time after time and to admit that you need help makes him such a good role model and blows away the stigma that men shouldn't show their weaknesses and admit their short-comings. How many prominent artists have we lost due to their demons and personal problems? Good on you, James. Oh, and the new album rocks!
The end of the interview had me emotional. Love James and I'm so proud of him. I really hope he knows how we all feel. I know he does, but I just hope he acknowledges it because we are so grateful for him.
I grew up with James and Metallica, and they have meant so much to me over the years. It felt like they left me after St. Anger was released and it became a void in my life until Hardwired which was when I started to reconnect with them again. And now with 72 seasons I feel like they have fully returned and I can truly embrace them again. It is almost like a long lost friend has returned. No idea if any of this would make sense to anyone but myself but my love for Metallica has never been stronger. 72 seasons is the album I have been waiting for for so long (over 23 years), I thought it would never happen but here we are! To me this is one of their absolute BEST albums ever!
Thank you for this gem of an album and everything you've done in your career. Much love to the Metallica family worldwide. You all continue to inspire and make our lives better.
So now I know why the riffs sound raw, and lively, and youthful. It was the OGV. I knew it, I just knew that he was using the original. MAN THAT IS SO BAD ASS. LIKE SUPER wicked to just, pickup the original and just play it again. The history and the sound is so good. A lot of us are scared James, but we are fucking proud of you indeed. Hit the nail right on the head man. Be proud of what you have done, and came out with. So good man, we're proud of the band, and the music and everything. Now go kick some ass.
Thank you James for the wonderful, amazing moment at Hamburg, while taking me Hands to put the Bandana in it. I will never forget, you brought back hope and hapiness in my life, i send all my love to you ❤
Powerful interview! James really has turned his pain into a positive message for many people with his song writing, made the beaten down feel like they can stand up strong through Metallica's music. 72 Seasons is a really good album.
“There’s some I need to work on, there’s some I need to completely forget, and there’s some I still need to find” “if you don’t like something learn about it, it will teach you something” keep truckin sir ✝️
James you really sound like you're finally at peace with your inner self. I've always prayed for you since back in your decadence days of the 80's. Stay on that Horse brother. ❤ Been a fan since Ride my teenage years and 72 seasons is a Band Masterpiece
James is an inspiration. If I could talk to him, I would say "Thank you for opening your heart and showing your fears, your imperfections and the search of being a better person". And I love yellow, it's my favorite colour and for me it means hapiness!
I consider myself truly blessed to be a contemporary of Metallica and have the privilege to go to one of their concerts. James is a musical genius who has remained true to his artform throughout his entire life. Beyond that he is just an awesome person that has the wisdom of years. Can't wait to see him in concert in August 2024 in Minneapolis.

Almost a year ago, may 12th, I was in Belo Horizonte, Brasil, watching Metallica. It was my show number 11 and I never saw James so emotional. We are definitely a big family and I'm happy for that.

To some it looks like a dream life, but I can't imagine how incredibly hard it is to keep your shit together in this industry for over 40 years! I'm so grateful for the band, but especially James' resilience. We love you James \m/
Album is meh. I mean, it's impressive Metallica can still make music and tour stadiums at their advanced age but this album is nothing memorable compared to old works. It's just a money maker to cash in with new generation. They are millionaires from royalties from past works.
He is just a normal person with feelings we all have, struggles and in need of a big hug from time to time. A good and very talented humble Dude‼️ I would say better than ever! Just go on Boy you rock it !!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🖤👊🏻
Killed us all with your insightful humility James, especially the description of the guitar mirroring your life passage, born in the sixties I can relate to that, old but with youthful exuberance.
Seeing James hold back emotions when he talked about his first guitar was a special moment, I can only imagine what thoughts went through his head at that split second
James Hetfield has always been a larger than life personality and he has a real presence on the concert stage! James has a commanding nature like a Lion with his voice, guitar playing, and lyrics but he's really just a flawed, vulnerable human being like the rest of us. He's finally coming to terms with all of his issues and is working hard to become a better man.
This was such an open and personal interview. I am grateful James is willing to go this deep. As well, him opening up about his own journey is definitely helpful in my own walk. Long live Metallica.

@streetsandpeaks3013 Thank You for Sharing ❤ This resonates (angry @ my own parents), and Helps me so much. ❤ MTA4EVA 🤘🤘🤘
His voice, his words, bring me so much peace and happiness. I could listen to him talk for hours. 💜💜💜
🤘🏻😈🤘🏻
🙏🏻
He’s always so candid and engaging
My soul is yours, my heart is yours, my life is yours
If years pass, my love will not die
You are a song which will continue all life
Will not fall on my lips for years ❤💛
Papa het is a legend him and Metallica have helped me through countless issues in my life.. I will always be grateful for Metallica!
Never had the money or opportunity to see them in concert but I still am a life long fan at 42, I'm a homeless veteran now due to bad decisions.. but Metallica have given me strength.. Even in the worst of times!
🙏🏻🌹😊
Maybe it's God that has sustained you. He can and will and one day His will can bring you where you need to be in much better circumstances. Metallica will also be there for you to cherish.
James has such a satisfying talking voice. He should do a celebrity audiobook reading or something.
This man has been my " idol " and inspiration since 1988 , 72 Seasons sounds so alive and vibrant and gives me hope for the future of our Band , James seems happy and healthy and that's all that matters!
The new album kicking ass doesn't suck either !
Favourite track so far is Room of Mirrors, classic in the making!
it is a great album. The best since the black album for sure!
I'm 42, Metallica has shaped my Life.
Room of Mirrors is growning on me but atm Shadow or 72 is my favourite
@@Vor_Tex_Sunreally tho? Like cmon since that u just cancel Death out ?
@Manvir Singh for me yes. Magnetic was good but this one tops that record for me
It's nice hearing how these songs were put together particularly why the vocals are a certain way. The singing was fantastic on this album.
We metallica fans love this man so much he's been through a lot in his life and we're here to support him
It's comforting in its way to hear James say he's still trying to figure himself out. I'm in my mid-40s, certainly no where near being in a place in life and mentally where I want to be. I suppose one's whole life is the pursuit of that and you do what you can. Best of luck, James.
I've been a fan of Metallica since the early 90s and I'm still loving the music they put out
Veteran 'Tallica fan lol
Yayyy finally!! Thank you for posting the whole interview ❤ I can listen to this guy talk for hours.
@@BonBonz21 Absolutely
Everything I've been through in my life good, bad and indifferent James Hetfield has been in my ears to help me along. I am forever grateful for him (and the rest of the band) for that. James I love you as a musician and a person who is very open with your demons as I struggle with as well.
Wow. James is so vulnerable and well-spoken about his life. He's a deep thinker. Lovely interview overall. Well done!
He really is.
James is just a Mentor to so many. Been a part of my musical life for 35 years such an incredible person. As has been everyone in Metalllica.
72 Seasons means the world to me. Been dealing with Mental Health issues lately and went through treatment, this album means the world to me. ❤
Why did you capitalize "mental health"?
@@borek92 idk why, doesn’t really matter. My literacy isn’t the greatest lol
@@borek92 who cares?
Hope you get well soon and overcome whatever you're dealing with!
@@rubytuesday8572 thank you❤️
Keep Chasing Light, this guy is my musical idol and someone Ive looked up too since age 14, Im 40 now
Same here man same here!!! Im 40 as well and i fanatic fan since was i 15!!! They are Gods of the music!!! 🤘🤘🤘
You missed death megneticand many great songs and ruffs like my Apocalypse
That was just your Life Judas Kiss cyanide....
@@MusickopatH Nope, didn't miss anything. To me that album was even worse than St. Anger.
This interview is amazing. So good to see a long interview like this with James, and with good questions at that. Het seems like such a cool guy.
James, you have been my flashlight so many times over the years. Thank You, keep your light on! ❤❤
Yessssss! Thank you for this full interview, I have been waiting for ❤️🙏
i love you james. You saved my life when i was a kid. Thank you.
I could listen to James for at least 2hrs more. I love hearing him reflect on his life and his challenges. Because they belong to all of us.
Thank you for this gem of an album and everything you've done in your career. Much love to the Metallica family worldwide.
You all continue to inspire and make our lives better.
A genuinely good man. Your vulnerability and honesty is such an inspiration to so many. Love ya JH
I Love you James, We all Love you, Stay Strong Legend🤘🏻!💙💙💙
I just love Metallica and James. Keep it up we need your gift. Irish love and loyalty. 5o years old still a massive fan, hugs to my band xxxx
“There’s some I need to work on, there’s some I need to completely forget, and there’s some I still need to find” “if you don’t like something learn about it, it will teach you something” keep truckin sir ✝️
James, thank you for this interview. We love you. Big hugs.
Metallica has always helped me through my darkness, always my light
James you really sound like you're finally at peace with your inner self. I've always prayed for you since back in your decadence days of the 80's. Stay on that Horse brother. ❤ Been a fan since Ride my teenage years and 72 seasons is a Band Masterpiece
James is an inspiration. If I could talk to him, I would say "Thank you for opening your heart and showing your fears, your imperfections and the search of being a better person". And I love yellow, it's my favorite colour and for me it means hapiness!
I like James' answer to being asked about his greatest hopes. "Connecting with people. Being of service."
As a musician and for many years that you've been doing it I give you so much credit that you've been through I'm a very big fan of you and your band you have the most awesome voice ever I am 58 years old and been a fan since day one music was always a therapy for me if it was in a car or your house wherever if I was in that dark place listening to music made me feel better I know what it feels like cuz I've been through depression and mental illness and having anxiety and panic attacks through my life and listening to your music always just took that darkness away and I thank you so much and thumbs up to you that you went and got your stuff together it's not easy especially you as a very big entertainer especially being around a million people and traveling all the time that's got to be very stressful I mean it sounds like fun but when you've been doing it for as many as years of you guys been doing it I really don't know how it is but I thank you and just keep positive and stay out of darkness because you are one badass musician you have a very beautiful gift I wish you the best and I will always be listening to you till the day that I die thank you for being you 👍✌️🎶🎤💯
Almost a year ago, may 12th, I was in Belo Horizonte, Brasil, watching Metallica. It was my show number 11 and I never saw James so emotional. We are definitely a big family and I'm happy for that.
This man will always be an inspiration to me. His openness and fight to keep on going amidst the world of fame and a kind of unspoken pressure is phenomenal. To some it looks like a dream life, but I can't imagine how incredibly hard it is to keep your shit together in this industry for over 40 years! I'm so grateful for the band, but especially James' resilience. We love you James \m/
This man and his music has been a colossal inspiration to me for many, many years now. So great to see him grow into the man he has now become.
The whole album is pure gold, James.
Idk bout all that lol. Its not St.anger bad but i would say that hardwires was better
@@ryanlarrabee9811 nah your opinion sucks my opinion is better, 72 seasons is great 😂
@@intraterrestrial5035 Dude like his own comment
Lol yeah right the new stuff rocks! 🔥
Album is meh. I mean, it's impressive Metallica can still make music and tour stadiums at their advanced age but this album is nothing memorable compared to old works. It's just a money maker to cash in with new generation. They are millionaires from royalties from past works.
49:58 talking about inamorata. Love it cause I feel a connection to the song
Man, the more I listen to 72 seasons, the more I love it!
James, we love you. Big hugs ❤❤❤
"Honesty is My Only Excuse". Talk about HEAVY.🔥
Beautiful interview. I'm glad we have James with us. I hope this guy keeps making music for a long time.
Seeing James hold back emotions when he talked about his first guitar was a special moment, I can only imagine what thoughts went through his head at that split second
listening to james explaining about inamorata makes me wanna listen to it times and times again
thank you so much for these long interviews!
Life without Metallica would really suck. James is the man
This was such an open and personal interview. I am grateful James is willing to go this deep.
As well, him opening up about his own journey is definitely helpful in my own walk.
Long live Metallica.
James - my biggest musical inspiration
I love this man. I have for 35 years. Bless you, Papa.
