No problem. Your welcome. Its sadly coming to the end of the season now. Trout season is finished and salmon closing very soon too. There is always course fish though.

Nice video Iain. I think the only club stocking trout these days is Cumnock so very unlikely to catch stocks these days. With the new counter in at Nethermills last year, very few sea trout entered the river last year....less than 50 went through the counter as far as we can tell. However, there were reasonable numbers of salmon, particularly encouraging in May June and July. There was so much high water in the back end and problems with the counter that we are unsure of what went through later in the season.
Thanks. Im pretty sure that that was a stocked fish. Only my opinion like but you could tell from the fin damage. I caught a few bigger stocked trout over the season. Im not sure who is putting them in. I wonder if they have been in the river a while as most were on the larger size. I certainly know that the club im in doesnt stock any trout. Sad that so few sea trout are entering the system. Could they be jumping over the weir instead of going thru the fish counter? Also nice to here that there is a few salmon running. I did see a few but only caught 2 Salmon at the back end of the season. I did get one 3 years ago at the end of April so I know they do run thru then. To be fair I didnt really fish for them much till the back end as was mostly trout fishing. I do love salmon fishing but there is alot of blanks unfortunately these days.
@@afishermansdiarywithiainup5377 Yes if it was indeed a stockie, then that leaves the question of 'who'? I'd be very happy to look at scale samples from any trout you catch in future that you think may be stocked or are unusual in any way. We can normally distinguish between wild and stocks easily and certainly can often age fish.It would be interesting to know how old that large trout was so if you ever catch more like it, then I would love to see scale samples. Give me a call at Ayrshire Rivers Trust sometime as it would be good to chat about these things. As for the sea trout, until Autumn, there was no possibility of them entering over the weirs as the levels were low and the only route available was the fish pass with the counter. I take that on board but I did eat the fish and it was delicious. For the record I caught 168 brown trout out the river last year and only kept 8. I ate the fish over the winter. it is legal to keep 2 fish per day that are over a certain size

Something is wrong, handle isnt sqeeking:) I dont know how it works there but here in Norway i have found the slimmer wobblers or plugs or rapala style baits fish quite a bit better than the fat ones so what do you think about that?
Slim ones work well its true. I fish all sorts of shapes and sizes of lures. I would say the action or vibration of the lure is more important than the shape. At the moment I fish short fat ones like in the video because I like the action they have. Also I buy them from china and change the hooks before fishing with them. That way when I loose them and get snagged it isnt too expensive. When you loose as many lures as me if they are proper rapalas then it gets very expensive.
@@afishermansdiarywithiainup5377 Hmm, i live 100 meters from the Gaula and consider it a bad season if i lose 2 but i obv know the river welll and its not a shallow river so i mostly use the handmade ones and sometimes rapala CD in 5-7-9 cm. i have used them for 48 years so i am holding my ground and think the slim ones are a bit better atleast here in Gaula, Orkla and stjoerdal river.
@@MrKveite1 Im glad the slim ones work well for you. I have caught alot of fish on both fat and slim lures. If you dont loose many I can understand using the more expensive lures. I know they are good. I just loose so many it works out more cost effective to buy cheaper ones and change the hooks. Last year I didnt loose quite as many but 2 years ago I lost 6 in one fishing session. Hand made lures are nice. I got a couple from poland and really liked them but then lost them like all the rest
@@iainupton3214 Handmade ones here are msotly around 30-35 gbp direct from the ones that make them so its def expensive to lose quite a few. The difference from say a rapala CD to a handmade one is the handmade ones can be tuned to move a lot more in calmer parts of the river, with good flow there is basicly no diff exept the price and facebook status for the small p...s guys. But obv the river isnt high all the time and that's where the expensive ones are better. When that's said, the rapala CD 5 cm are really good when the river get low. really really good:)

I dont always follow that but as I like all methods of fishing it gives me a chance to try different methods. Sometimes its just what I fancy that day.
I was fishing at sorn a few years ago and hooked what i thought was a grilse, turned oot to be a 5pun broonie with a kyped jaw. Just took i quick pic n released it
Thats a good fish you got. My record is 5lb from the river Ayr. I returned that one aswell. To be fair I do return most of the trout I catch. I keep the odd one for the table. I caught 168 trout out the river last year and kept 8 as I like to eat them.
The lure is a red and white proberous lure. Its about 12 g I think. Earlier in the video when I was on the pool above that one it is hooked onto my rod and you can just about see it. When I caught the big trout I was using a black flying c lure fishing for salmon. In my later videos I usually show the lure Now. Thanks

Great video and scenery,but maybe use barbelss hooks,and handle fish better when releasing.

A seatrout has no red spots ever so look at the spots and it say 100 sure wich specie it is no mather the colour of the fish itself.
