Worm fishing for salmon on the river Moy

  • Water levels on the river are dropping off nicely after a recent flood, there's a nice bit of colour still in the river making conditions perfect for fishing the worm. I manage to hit 3 fish one after an another in the same spot in the first hour of arriving on the river. I damaged my line on hooking the 2nd as he was deep hooked resulting in me breaking in the 3rd fish.

    I won the fishing competition on this river back in 1993. I was on holiday with my dad over there and caught the only salmon of the day on the worm. I loved it over there, the pubs were amazing (even though I was only 13 lol), the festival was amazing too. Cracking place! I've always wanted to go back

    Long shank hook, 8" forceps, barbed shank hold worm, debarb barb on gape, open salmons mouth (bottom lip),
    hold line in middle finger, put 8" forceps down fishes mouth, lift up any loose worm/s, put forceps in gape of hook
    gently squeeze gape with forceps, down, twist and pull out, takes all in (staying relaxed and confident) approx
    5 - 8 seconds to un hook any size of salmon. Try it (not you but those that can't un hook any round fish. Tried and tested over many many years. More you try it it gets very easy to do, remember debarb your barb on gape, i use single hooks with two barbs up the shank to hold the worm. We are not allowed to float fish for salmon, but if i was i would be using a much smaller float, that looks like a float for sea fishing. Tight lines.

    Question: If salmon don't eat in fresh water why then do they swallow the worm so deep, I've seen this many times before??

    • @waynecarberry
      @waynecarberry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a good question but one I have no answer for. Fresh running fish seem to take the worn well down but when in the system a few weeks thay don't take it as hard.

    • @atlantic_fishing_pursuits
      @atlantic_fishing_pursuits 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I reckon it's because they are full of adrenaline when they're fresh also I've seen them just blow out my worms before and I use big enough hooks that theyre not as likely to gut hook!! I found though most salmon on worm take it down far but if you can set the hook as fast as possible then that helps aswell

    • @jack-zz9hb
      @jack-zz9hb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fish a river that salmon would have to travel about 80 miles from the sea to get to and they still swallow the worm. I'm convinced they eat them.

      Another theory is that worms replicate something they feed on at sea, baby squid or whatever, who knows, Iv seen more evidence that they do feed in fresh water because there are so many things they take. So many mysteries behind them though

    • @everylittlethinggonnabealright
      @everylittlethinggonnabealright ปีที่แล้ว

      It's instincts.. You must remember when out at sea Salmon are opportunistic feeders and feed on all types of crustaceans, krill, shrimp, prawns, sprats, herring, sand eels, lug, rag worm, octapus, crayfish the list is endless So upon entering freshwater just straight from the sea that feeding instinct is still fairly powerful like a cat playing with a ball of wool. It's only after being in the rivers few weeks this feeding habit wanes and the fat reserves kicks in.. Nature's way of protecting the fish and the next generation of salmon smolts.

    ....which is why worm is often banned on most waters.......you end up playing the poor salmon from it's guts. Salmon often swallow a worm greedily. Shrimps, they often bite savagely and shake, and incredibly often spit out without getting hooked lol, but worms they gulp down.
    You are very lucky Irish waters a) allow you to take spring fish for the pot (here in stupid England, all salmon must be returned before June 16th. Madness.) and b) allowed to worm fish.

    I travel up from South East England to west Scotland twice a year and the salmon numbers resulting from salmon farms is astonishing and I have yet to catch one though I have caught a lot of sea trout and brown trout,it's almost all catch and release there and even though I understand that they are trying to help the small amount of rod fisherman fishing now adays is so small and the amount of seals and cormarent taking fish is crazy! I have no problems with someone who pays hundreds of pounds to take a few small fish it's better than the bigger three seasons at sea fish we need to save!! I also think I would also like to keep my first fish if it's a fresh run smaller fish as it's my first but would probably return most every single fish after that! As long as you don't take loads I can't see the problem???

      @@tonebonetones worming will never be banned but always frowned upon, the method of working has provided meals for generation's of my family, I see more damage being done my pollution and netsmen and commercial fisherman than anything else, anglers in fairness are trying their best but no matter what they do it won't make a difference to declining stocks, I'm not saying we should or will kill every fish we catch but at the same time, why miss out?

    That’s all your gonna catch with that method. Tiny fish, best method in the moy is the fly or my personal favourite the black fly n c. I had 20 last year at foxford all released the biggest was 15lbs. Your just killing baby fish with that terrible method
