  • Is the Lovevery The Realist playkit the one to skip? Can we make the Lovevery The Realist Play Kit for 19-21 Months more affordable? Is the Lovevery The Realist Play Kit worth the $120 price tag, or is it extra clutter? Are the materials in this Lovevery box age appropriate and enough to forego all other toy investments? A lot to discuss this week and a lot of savings to be had with our Lovevery comparable dupes this week!
    We're returning to the "Make your own Montessori inspired play kits" series and taking a look at Lovevery's 'The Realist' Play Kit for 19-21 Months. We continue to see a pattern of materials that can certainly be used and would be enjoyed by kids in the specified age range, but would ideally have come in the previous play kit. Additionally, the Lovevery Realist Play Kit provides a material that is a bit too complex for this age range and could definitely be substituted for DIY materials.
    In my personal opinion only, this kit is absolutely the one to skip. You likely have quite a few of the items needed to recreate activities working the same skills or, it is quite likely your child is already working on a lot of these skills with other activities you have at home. If any of the individual items in the Realist play kit are of interest to you, I'd recommend looking into a secondhand option to get that one or two items instead!
    Our Lovevery dupe Montessori-inspired play kit allows your child to work the exact same skills, while reserving a budget for additional items that can support their growing interest in Practical Life activities and language explosion!
    As always, whether you choose to subscribe to Lovevery, another play kit service, buy these on your own, or DIY--do what works best for your family! Please remember that whatever you choose for your family is absolutely fine as well :)

    By popular demand, we do now have a storefront! I have only been able to add items from this video for now, but if you need a quick way to access all the items on Amazon, you can check it out! Some items are on other websites, so everything will continue to be linked in the description box.
    I will post a full update when the storefront is fully up and running 🥰

    What you say is exactly my problem with Lovevery - so often the included items are either too early or too late. The problem is that this subscription does not allow one of the Montessori key concepts, which is to follow the child. I keep complaining to them about this in their feedback requests 😁
    But I found a solution that works for us - we have the subscription and I request the kits earlier than recommended, whenever I see that our daughter starts having an interest in a certain concept that is represented by an item in one of their future boxes. Then I sell everything that she is not interested in - I always get the purchase price of the entire box back this way since it resells for so much despite always selling less than half the items. I sometimes hang on to some items that I think she may start to find useful in the future.
    I really appreciate your videos with alternatives, a couple times I got one of your suggestions to substitute something from the kits that I sold and so far everything has been a hit 👍

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I never understood how any subscription service can truly be Montessori or Montessori inspired if it dictates when the materials come to you..but I get the convenience factor and was looking into it myself when I intended to go back to work! My plan was similar-I was just going to use an earlier date to get all the kits early regardless of the subscription we went with, so I always had items ahead of time. But then I went too far into the "can't I just get my own things?" rabbit hole. It's great to hear they hold such good resell value! We still have our barely used 5-6 month play kit...I may look into reselling that then! And really happy to know the alternatives have all worked well for you too!

    Thank you for these videos!! I was going to buy a loveevery kit but I knew my toddler would only like 3 of the toys and the rest he had mastered. But I got some great ideas for DIY plus a few cheaper Amazon options that I know he’ll like. Such a better deal

      So happy to know this helped! That's exactly what I find to be true about the kits for us as well, so I never end up seeing the need to invest in one either. It's so much more tailored to the child if we have the opportunity to find these items ourselves too 🥰

    I’m actually really happy to see you talk a little bit in depth about that counting slide. I have it for my 15 month old son that I bought on Facebook marketplace. And I’ve always felt it’s a little bit too advanced for even a two or three year old. But wasn’t sure if maybe I just didn’t know enough about it to present it properly. Anyway I appreciate your perspective.

      I put this video off for a while because of that material specifically, to be honest. My mom (who directs a Montessori school) and I had a lengthy discussion about it too because it was just so peculiar. I've heard similar feedback like yours on other review videos as well. I'm sure there are kiddos out there who love this material dearly for the ring chute and object permanence aspect though.

    The realist box was a favorite of ours, but the ring chute was not. I've seen many other parents talk about their disappointment in the ring chut as well. The concept didn't really come alive when using it, but I see what they were trying to do.

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I saw the exact same on the reviews I watched! I tried to see how the kiddos play with it and they really do just use it as a ring slide, but with only 4 rings, even that doesn't hold their attention much. I'm thinking it may get left out if they ever re-vamp this play kit again.

    Wish I had this video when we got the kit. I will say the items have changed. The matching pocket set was in the babbler play kit (13-15 months) when we got the subscription. We also never got the ring counting slide

      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah they redid a bunch of the kits not too long ago! Some of the stuff got moved, some added, but some take out. It seems the previous kit had a bit more in it ...Definitely more books!

    Hi Maria, thank you so much for your research and video. This has been super informative and helpful to me! Would you be able to tell me where to buy the exact pegboard Stella is playing with? I noticed it's different than the ones listed in the description. Thank you so much! Love your channel!

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Thank you-so happy this is helpful! The pegboard was unfortunately not something I bought. It was passed down to us from an Infant/Toddler class that closed a long time ago-so it's a material that's older than me! I have searched high and low for it with the information that remained, but it was a local store that is no longer in business and I've never been able to find the exact same item (this is true for many of the older materials we have. They just don't make them the same anymore!) There is another style that is most similar to ours. It's from Learning Resources - I added to the storefront and in the description box. It has different shapes instead of just cylinders, but it's more similar than the mushroom style. I'll try to add the link in the next comment as well, but sometimes it gets blocked by TH-cam.

    Hi Maria, will you be creating a video review on the Free Spirit kit? I was wondering if you have any opinions about the wooden counting box. My son is 26 months and already knows how to count up to 20. For that reason, I was thinking of buying the Free Spirit Kit and introducing parts of it (wooden counting box and matching game earlier). Any insight?

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yes, I will be, but it will be I'm a while still. The wooden counting box appears to be Lovevery's take on an item that used to be only at TAG toys, which we were fortunate to get passed down to us! There have since been others recreating the same item on a smaller scale (I haven't checked how they compare to the size of Lovebery, but they are smaller than the TAG Toys one, which was quite large).
      This is one of those recreated versions: amzn.to/3U3v02O
      What I liked about the original and these versions better, is they're more closely sticking to and odd/even pattern (though the number 3 is just one row instead of side by side 🫠). That is a GREAT way to visually see odd vs even from the Start and naturally start to grasp that concept. The layout of Lovevery's is just any which way.
      We have been using this material for a very long time (I've featured it even in the 19-20 months activities ideas) so I definitely think it makes way more sense to have it early 🤷‍♀️ But one thing to consider with this item and counting in general is the difference between memorizing sequence, counting with 1:1 correspondence, counting to understand how many items are in the group, and associating a quantity with a number. All of those are individual concepts to work on - even if we are just sticking with 10 or even 5 at first.
      As for the matching game, I'm not sure why it's so late in the sequence for them. Matching and sorting are well under way before that age. Yes we can use it for a memory game or counting, etc but certainly would get far more use if introduced earlier!

    Maria! So good to see you again 😁 I am longing to catch up on your videos I have fallen behind 😬
    Great video! My husband surprised me with a few kits and I think this one is coming up for us so I appreciate your perspective ❤️ That’s definitely a downside to the playkits- each child is on a unique developmental path, some items are needed earlier while others would be best introduced much later /:

      Aw Priscilla I have missed seeing your comments! Hope you've been well! What a lovely surprise from your husband ❤️ From what I've briefly looked at, after this playkit, they seem to be much more interesting (in my opinion)! But yes, definitely a big trade Orr between super convenient and not as customized to the child's timeline.

    This video needs to take into account shipping costs as the grand total would be more than $117. I went to order the glass and pitching set and the shipping was $8 for the 1 item. I'd much rather pay the full $120 and get free shipping from Lovevery than have to pay almost $10 in shipping for one item.

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Montessori Services regularly does free shipping offers, but I also did show an Amazon option which does have free shipping and would be even cheaper. Not to mention that the pouring set comes with 2 glass pitchers, not plastic like Lovevery, a tray, and a sponge, which is already more value. But everyone finds value in different things and if all the Lovevery items are worth it for you, then that's great. Many people find they only need a couple of the items and not everything in the playkit and these are the options you can get in that case.
