  • This is a test of the 6 blade Boss 6 by All Blade Archery.
    (Pictured with VIP Archery Match Point & Extract Broadhead)
    Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Boss 6 posted in parenthesis as well.
    Total Score: 54.13 = 5 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 14 pts)
    This is not simply a test of how the heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score a Mech can receive is 20 & the max score a Fixed can receive is 16.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 17 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (which is a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (3" = 7 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (3" = 7 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1"=3 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 3.8 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 1075 grams = 1/10 = .9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +450 grams = 1/10= .9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score.
    (10/10= 2 pts (replace only)).
    4. Penetration (20%, 13.88 pts)
    There are 3 different penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. The depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7.25" & score 7.25)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. The # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score. (36 layers = 4.63 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 4 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is then judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (4 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate 2 times. Its condition is then judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (0/10 = 0 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is then judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (NA)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
    +1 extra large cut
    +1 modularity-used w/any broadhead or field tip
    +1 devastating tissue damage
    Total Score: 55.68 = 5 Golden Arrows
    Price: $3.33/head
    In addition the Overall Numerical Score each head will also receive a LUSK GRADE in 0-10 Golden Arrows as follows:
    90-10 =10 Golden Arrows
    85-90 = 9 Golden Arrows
    80-85 = 8 Golden Arrows
    70-80 = 7 Golden Arrows
    60-70 = 6 Golden Arrows

    This looks like a great idea for adding to a turkey style fixed broadhead to increase damage and slow the broadhead as it penetrates the bird. I think it would also make a great small game head with combined with either a field point or small broadhead. I dont think I'd trust it on deer as it may not work well if it hits a bone and its design will limit penetration

      Yeah, I hear ya. Remember, this is their crossbow model; they make ones with fewer blades for vertical bows, so they will penetrate more effectively.

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures Thank you. These are the heads I mentioned on a few of your other videos for making hybrids. I use a 405 fps crossbow and pair these with a 500 grain gold tip arrow. The end weight is 505-525 depending on what exact broadhead I pair it with and my lighted nocks. I think I should get good penetration with these seeing how as I usually get complete pass throughs with just a regular broadhead by itself. I'm only not had one pass through and that was because it hit the opposite side leg exiting and broke the doe's leg. She carried the arrow about 10 feet before dropping it and she only went 60 yards. Thank you for all your replies and for all the videos you make. It really helps the community. When talking with other hunters and friends, even committing on other TH-cam pages I often refer to your videos.

    Gotta give them credit for creativity. However, for my own style of hunting,I don't see a match. But for people hunting raccoons ? I think they would kick ass.
    Great test once again John. I'd have liked to see fresh ones thru the steel and another @ the concrete once it was determined the head couldn't hold up.
    Gel penetration actually was decent @ 7.25. MDF ? About half what some of the top heads do. But again for a raccoon, ? Why not ? I see small game all over this.
    Thanks again John, keep digging up these interesting heads. Much appreciated.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good thought. I have sharpened them on vids before and shown the increased sharpness gained. But honestly, sharpness has less to do with depth of penetration than people think--especially with the test mediums I use. I've compared a razor sharp head to one I dulled with a file--like butter knife dull--and it still penetrated almost as well.
      That being said, I do think it will make a difference in blood letting, as it cuts tissue more efficiently. I just don't have a test for that.

  • @bassman6211
    @bassman6211 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Man all these broadhead tests sure made it hard to pick one. I finally settled for the sevr titanium 2.0s. The 125s at approximately 390fps out of my crossbow should work REALLY well.

    I'm way ahead of you John. I came up with this idea 2 years ago. Wanted to find a way to slow down arrows after pass thru. I am using a crossbow and even the widest cut heads go through like butter and sail away up to 50 yds if shooting on level ground. I never followed thru and continued the test on a line animal.

    I agree with Long Draw...turkey is about all this thing should be used for. I hope this company isn't marketing this for deer and other large game. It's defeating the whole purpose of a broadhead. I imagine the penetration is horrible on game.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand the concern. And I'm not advocating for them. But remember, this is the crossbow model. They make them with fewer blades for vertical bows as they get better penetration.

  • @TheSpeyfisher
    @TheSpeyfisher ปีที่แล้ว +4

    My only question is real penetration???? The saw teeth to me not only rips going through but I believe would get hung up????? I honestly would not have the heart to try this on any large animals unless you want to track maybe half the day? Turkey, rabbits etc. sure no problem. As always John thanks and God bless.....

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
