    Hey All - this video was just to document my experience.. I know there are a lot of variables that could of changed that like arrow weight, single bevel, different broadhead, Coriolis effect lol.. I also am not saying you shouldn't shoot a two blade broadhead.. I'm a fan of three blades for my hunts & experience thus far but you should test for yourself.. ABT - TC

      Went with, the Grim Reaper, 3 Blade, 125 grain, Micro Hades for the SAME Reasons,.. Better Blood Trails and, a Bigger Hole !
      They are, extremely Accurate ! NO fancy "Tuning", needed ! You ARE, doing the "Right" thing by switching, B-H's,.. IMO
      The 3 Bladed, B-H's that we've used, in My Family ( Shuttle T's, G-5 Strikers, Exodus ) Have always Killed, Elk / Moose very "Well" and with, GOOD Blood trails and I EXPECT that, the G R Micro Hades will Be,.. even Better !

    That shot was way back on a forward quartering deer. No deflection, it was shot placement combined with position of the deer.

    Man I didn't know the front shoulder was at the last rib 🤔 that shot was at a harder angle then you realize and exited inline with the angle shot.

    Last week I took 2 deer with a compound. 495 gr arrow going 250 fps. One was a magnus stinger 2 blade and the other was a Buzzcut 4 blade. Both heads hand sharpened and stropped. I put my pin lower 1/3rd in line with the far leg. The 2 blade deer went 40 yards and fell in sight of my stand. The other one went 80. Better blood on the 2 blade trail. All broadheads work I think we just need to pick the shot carefully depending what is on the arrow.
    Mechanicals; keep it behind the shoulder but only just. Fixed blade; Aim lower 1/3rd in line with the far leg. And don't worry about the scapula too much. Stick with quartering away and broadside for the angle.
    On my buck the arrow exited his far side scapula because of how he rolled and ducked. Both arrows stuck in the ground.
    Excellent discussion for all.

  • @CormierTC
    @CormierTC 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    My 2 cents are this, deflection very well could have happened, but also that deer could be slightly more quartered than you realize. Watching it back again and again, the front shoulders look like they are turning slightly to the right and making the quartering angle appear less severe than it is and if your camera is to your right when you shot, the replay will only magnify this illusion. Based on where the arrow exits on camera, it looks like less deflection and more the deer was quartering more than you thought.

    • @archery365
      @archery365 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CormierTC I think your spot on. The arrow path is quite a bit from the left of the video frame, the impact is pretty far back on the deer to begin with. Like you said if you take in consideration the arrows path and the deer quartering to angle at impact I don't believe the arrow deflected any.

      @rodneyparden6728 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CormierTC is spot on. No arrow deflection there. That deer was quartering in. Look at the off side back leg. If you see that much leg you know they are quartered in. Arrow stayed on its path and exited where it would be expected too.

  • @Waty8413
    @Waty8413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I really think that the deer was quartering more than you think, may have not been standing straight, and started moving on the shot. It's sort of a stacking of tolerances situation. Several things weren't quite right and that doesn't even take into account the actual arrow. I'm not sure any arrow would have done "better". Things didn't go perfectly, but the deer still died and you recovered it.

  • @jca7579
    @jca7579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The other thing I observed on your shot....It was a lot further back, high and quartering away than what the video shows. I agree it did deflect , but it was going in on a pretty good angle.

    I just got a deer with a cutthroat single bevel. Double lung at 30 yards. No deflection etc. but ZERO blood for 100 yards. A few drops we could barely track. The last 50-80 he started coughing. 650 grain weight. To finish the season I just re configured to 570 grain, micro hades pro. Next year will be around 500 grain.

    I had the same experience this year on a bull I shot. Broadside shot with no quartering. Perfect shot placement. Hit exactly perpendicular to them backside of a rib (cut a 3/8" groove in rib) and it exited a foot or more back and consequently only got one lung. Bad luck, yep! But it's a real risk with shooting the 2 blade. I think a steeper angled Broadhead would help, but I think I'll be going back to 3 blade...

    Love the thought and discussion provoking videos. I'll never shot a mechanical again after not getting more than 1 inch of penetration on a nice 9 point two years ago. I have gone with a fixed three blade elite from OzCut broadheads and love it. Simple to sharpen in the field, compact enough that it fits in the quiver without too much effort, and flies dead straight. Most importantly plows through intended target. Just put down a public land nilgai in Texas with one.
    Keep up the content guys.

    Really enjoy your almost innocent reviews. Your new and learning multiple aspects of bow hunting. With 500 grains, 290ftps, quality head. I’d put that right in his pump station from any angle.
    I’ve not been happy with the 2 blade blood trails. So I’ve moved on from
    them also. That GR fixed will be the lat head you need to try, good choice. I’ve shot 3 with the same VPA 3 blade, just resharpen and back in the quiver.

    I appreciate the experience and the discussion. I’ve done some digging myself as I’ve been shooting a 3 blade with good success. From doing my research, I’ll be switching to magnus broadheads 2 blade with bleeders, an annihilator broadheads which is a flared 3 blade and a SEVR 1.5/1.7/2.0 which is a mechanical but has a few points going for it: one; you can close it with a retaining screw meaning your actual broadheads turns into a practice head, and when it’s open the blades lock and swivel around bones so you can avoid the issue you had.
    Just my thoughts.

    I think low poundage bows are another variable to consider when discussing using two bladed arrows for deeper penetration or pass throughs. I know I could just get a different bow with draw length adjustment holes in the cam but I probably wouldn't have bought the one I have if it wasn't so cheap., So Im trying to make it work out.Still your video was very good food for thought. I was not aware of the deflection issue with two blades. Thanks...

    Great video, the arrow never changed directions. It went point A-B without moving. Until it struck the tree on the left side, which you see just slight above the back line of the buck, then deflects to the left striking the next tree where it’s pushed again back to the right. This deer and camera angle make it seem as if it made a turn but it did not. It maintained its course until striking the tree on its path. Plus if you are shooting that head and FOC 290’/ps, the arrow would have been placed in a bind at 45 degrees to the breaking point but I’m not sure a 250 spine shaft could get that far along. Great video share…

    I am not majorly experienced but from mine. Shot magnus stingers with bleeds, rage hypodermic, g5 Montecs(when they were made o BETTER steel and not cheap chinaism steel), but best results have been with the g5 montecs. Something with that 3 blade and punch that triangle hole. Just seems to kill them faster! This year is the QAD exodus 125grain. Total arrow weight 500grains 60lb bow. I will let you know the results. Have to say learning how yo sharpen your broadheads makes a HUGE different though! Even just a quick strop before going out make a HUGE difference more then anything. With the magnus and montecs! Pentration doubled!

    I agree, everyone has to do their own tinkering because I might not find the same success as you or anyone else. Your channel got me into tinkering with my setup and when it's not season, best believe I'm messing with every bit of gear I own to see what can be improved, what works and what doesn't.
    As far as testing and flight goes, Annihilator broadheads and Grim Reapers have had the best flight and accuracy on my bow, but I've already started building next year's arrows and we will see if these 2 stay in the quiver or if I swap over to a Thorn.
    Good video and good luck out there

    Glad you got the deer. I want to say thanks for sharing this. Footage like this is one of the greatest learning tools out there. After looking at the footage which is really excellent, the deer's position right before the impact as he ducked really shows how quartered to you he was. It is very deceiving in the woods and I have been tricked before too. The only aiming point on that deer IMO was right on the shoulder to slightly in front of it. I'm not condoning that type of shot but guys do it with the right setup. I don't shoot a setup like that so I have to pass or wait. I personally think the arrow exited very close to in line with the shot. Before the arrow was through him, the body movement could even contribute to an arrow veering off path slightly. Not saying it didn't deflect at all. Just saying there are other variables there. That same shot going in on a perfectly broadside deer is as far back as I would ever want to be hitting. I do not think that is close to behind the shoulder. I simply can't fault the 2 blade head for that. I watch all these broadhead videos online as I am just a junkie for this stuff but the truth really is if you pick a good broadhead 2, 3 or 4 blades that matches your type of setup, I don't care which, and send it through a couple deer a season for a dozen seasons, you will find differences in the results. Size of holes, blood trails, deflections, penetration, you name it. Thanks again for sharing. This is just my opinion. You make a good case for yours too.

    I had a very similar experience like this last year on a mule deer using a two blade single bevel. Ended up losing a very nice mule deer buck because of it. I shot him broadside if anything a slight quarter away at 50 yards behind his shoulder and somehow my arrow exited high and towards his rear end….I thought he was toast. Had lung blood but from my findings only ended up with one lung. Found him a week in a half later still alive and could sit and study the wounds. Along with my hunting buddy being able to see him and the arrow the day of before he disappeared. That was my first time trying a single bevel two blade and I never will again.

    Hey guys, in my opinion, I don't think deflection was a key player in that first shot. That deer was pretty aggressively quartering and that shot landed pretty far off the front shoulder. At that angle, I would be aiming for the offside shoulder with a durable arrow and razor-sharp head.

  • @alexkitakis3917
    @alexkitakis3917 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Your deflection is due to two things. Mostly, a 3 :1 head has much lower deflection, and it gets worse the more that ratio goes down. Secondly, your TAW wasn’t high enough. This means your head was spending more time slowed down allowing the deflection angle to become the easier path until the momentum was able to overcome resistance and continue forward.
    I think you’d be pleasantly surprised if you tried following the Ashby reports. A person can’t expect to see the same results just picking one of the 12 items, it is a system and you have to follow in order as much as possible.
    Aside from that, a two or four blade head is better for bone penetration than a three, because three has to wedge 3 directions vs two or four only moving 2.
    Good luck out there

    Try Tooth Of The Arrow broadheads. They are 4 blade head that flys true and are a machined one piece broadhead.

    Bullets can enter a body and go on crazy paths after that. There is no basis of this 2 blade arrowhead causing deflection. In fact with an arrow deflection would be a good thing to bring an animal down faster.

    Had the same thing happen with a 4 blade tooth of the arrow. In my opinion it has nothing to do with how many blades the broadhead has

    I have to say, from that footage it looks like there was almost no deflection at all. From where you were shooting compared to where the camera was and with how the deer was quartering to you, at most you had a very minor deflection

    I think you have just to a jumped to an errant conclusion. How far did the deer go? You never said. From the video (I would have been nice to see a replay on slo-mo so we could deduce a little more about what got hit inside the deer. First error, your shot was about 6-7" back behind the shoulder, which means you most likely missed the lungs and came out about 3-4" in front of the rear leg. You definitely missed the heart. When the game is quartering toward you, you need to aim closer to the centerline of the forward leg closest to you. As fast as your arrow went through that deer you may want to move up to the 200gr head, which is slight bigger. VPA now makes a 250gr arrow too. I prefer the single bevel model myself. Three blade broadheads are fine too. Use what you have confidence in. Good luck this year.

    I killed my elk in Alberta with a 2 blade broadhead (200g Jager) Taw was 635g from a 55lb recurve. Frontal shot at 19 meters. Penetrated to the nock. I've also used same setup to blow though deer and Wild Boar. Never had a redirected shot. However I am using a heavy arrow at a pretty low(ish) speed. Now I'm flirting with the "Dark Side" and got my PSE Xpedite compound I'm playing with a smaller 3 blade broadhead (Montec 125g G5 which are really popular this side of the pond) I like it but im just more confident with the 2 blade. And it that's the most important thing. If you're more confident in the micro hades then that's the one for you I guess. Love the channel BTW. I have a Hobbit draw length like Dan so it's good to see lol.

    Your the only person I know that went backwards with good broadheads. Your fix is to get a single bevel Broadhead, not a two blade Broadhead it will twist and breakthrough bones, and go straight like a corkscrew through the animal

    Man I blow through both scapula with sever 2.0 try the 1.5 if you're worried about penatration and put blood on the ground buddy

    Your are using a traditional 2 blade Broadhead on a compound bow. If you use a traditional bow, the traditional Broadhead works best

  • @tiredpatriot5205

    I'm sorry man but you cant blame that on the broadhead. That deer is quartering to you and started turning before impact. What you experienced did not happen based off of the head. I am glad you recovered the deer and in the end shoot what makes you happy but also be willing to accept that shit happens and you cant always blame it on the equipment.

    And I don't shoot that far back looked like center or a little back of lung an far back of lungs on exit your set up you have no problem shooting a good mechanical buddy

    Love your stuff as well as your demeanour. Really enjoy watching your journey. That said, your rationale makes zero sense here. Your “wedge” theory destroys itself cuz in reality more blades mean more wedges. As far as the buck you killed with the 2 blade, you simply shot at it angled toward you. Great shot still but it was the angle not the deflection

    I have been playing with the Micro hades as well. I like the full size 4 blade but they are tough to tune at longer ranges. Its a toss up up between GR Micro hades and the QAD exodus. Gotta keep tinkerin. Love your videos. Keep em comin.

    Rookie hunter trying to make excuses for his mistakes because for one that shot was way back for the angle the deer was on and you can clearly see in the video the arrow hit right in line with the front of that hind leg!! Arrow went straight through it was a questionable shot and needed an excuse made for it so what do we blame yep the broadhead!!

    All heads deflect at some point your shooting moving bone and muscle almost always that is why entrance is important on the shot you took glad you got the deer but just as easy could of been piece of lung live and guts and deer would of been lost for a while being that you say your in experienced you got lucky on that shot alot of people don't and they always are crying that there head did this or that and didn't open or some crap and they just smoked it behind shoulder and xyz head is junk you should of put it in lower and farther forward and ray Charles could of seen the blood trail from the blind or atleast he could if ya shot it with flapper junk two blade lol

    That wasn’t right behind the shoulder, man. Also, if it did kick sides ways and go from front to back of the animal, isn’t that the biggest possible wound channel?
