Hello Trevors, Wow I just ran into your bike museum site, it is amazing. In the early 80s I was a Cat-1 and working for the Japan Group in LA which consisted of Shimano, Araya, SR, etc. During the 1984 Olympics the Japan Group put me in charge of technically assisting and supplying the NZ team with anything they needed. When it was over the team gave me a jersey and a team time trail aero helmet which I proudly display in my shop. It is amazing how far safety has come at the Olympics because the aero helmet is just a thin 1mm thick shell of fiberglass and four small pieces of foam glued inside the shell with a simple nylon strap riveted to the shell.
If you ever need this helmet to complete a 1984 Olympic display just look me up as I am the only bike shop on Mercer Island Washington located near Seattle.

I remember when Colnago came out with that double tube frame.
I built a full Dura-Ace (AX aero cranks, the rest EX) on a gorgeous red anodised ALAN Alumiunium frame in early 80's Wellington, insured for NZ$2350 and it was stolen from Tory Street a few years later 😥 Originally on tubs but thankfully HP clinchers came along so no more gluing them onto rims. I scoured NZ for 54/11 gearing and having shortish (165mm?) cranks I could spin down the Ngauranga gorge to juuuust touch 100kph with a tailwind, the cateye quit at 99kph but I could spin to about 180rpm with then-skinny legs (less favourable winds I recall reading 83kph while peddling hard to undertake a car, the gorge was sooo much fun pre flyover).
The point(!) being that head down and arms aching I could see the front hub moving forward and backwards an alarming distance and at a pretty high frequency, it was like riding a rubber band. Honking up hills - my favourite thing cos I was absolute garbage on the flat - the bottom bracket moved left-right for what felt like miles.
From skinny to obese to gastric bypass, fast forward to 2009 when my gf said she'd leave me if I hit 100kg so I bought a bike off TradeMe - a $700 used EMC2 with Ultegra in Oamaru and a bit of front rim damage from being crashed. About five weeks later did Taupo solo, just the one lap lol, took 5hrs 35mins which at 95kg and not training I was stoked with, wish I hadn't started at the back of the six hour bunch. I'd do it again but it bought me six months of impotence - I regret nothing!😅
The FRAME difference tho... the old used EMC2 was my first carbon fibre frame - I hadn't ridden anything in a decade or so - and I remember one of the first rides I flicked across lanes and it nearly turned inside-out and spat me off, it's the literal opposite of the Alan. I pulled it apart for some reason and found cracks in the head so bought a really nice used Aluminium frame and couldn't believe it felt like lead compared to the carbon fibre frame so I sent the EMC2 frame to Graeme Pearson Composites who returned it like new.
Now I have a Giant Propel Advanced, live in a boat and can ride all over the planet with a used $450 Wahoo Kickr Snap and a Rouvy sub - times have definitely changed, that already OLD bike was a serious crash course on advances in frame technology. When we say "they don't make 'em like they used to" it isn't always a BAD thing, but I loved that Alan and I WANT TO FIND IT. *Serial number is 2235993JS8X57 as best I can read from a 1985 hand written insurance receipt!*

Hello Trevors, Since you are a Benotto fan I have a story about Senior BENOTTO and how I met my wife. While working for the Japan group, the president of Shimano USA (Ken Fujimura) called me and gave me the task of going to Mexico to visit Mr. Benotto himself to personally get the list of OEM products he will need for the following year. After our conversation Mr. Fujimura passed me over to his secretary to discuss travel arrangements etc., etc. She was this beautiful Korean girl who I met once at a Shimano party but she was way, way out of my league, "or so I thought".... During our travel conversation she kept praising me on how lucky I am to always be traveling all over the world etc. So I gather up what little bravado I had dealing with women and asked her out to a movie after I returned from my Mexico business trip. So I closed my eyes, and shrugged my shoulders and waited for the big "Sorry No"... Only to be met with a Gleeful YES! One year later we got married, and Shimano supplied everything for our wedding.. All thanks to the visit to see Mr. Benotto in Mexico.
