I'm currently working with a non profit that gets bikes donated, fixed up and given away to needy families. I'm always on the lookout for collector bikes and pull them aside to hopefully go to a bike museum or a collector that'll preserve them for history. Every bike has a history, even cheap ones. Bikes are just cool.

You give them to the museum or collector, or sell the donation to them?

You should give the collector bikes to the needy families so they csn sell them to feed their kids xD

I find bikes at the dump all the time and most are easily fixable, patch a tube or juice up the cables and give them to programs. I’ll buy bundles of bikes if even one catches my eye and do the same. I’ve got my childhood cruiser still and a couple vintage ones that aren’t going anywhere haha

I’m amazed when shops like this can employ people and stay afloat. That’s tough when you typically have small margins anyway.

I got my first road bike there! My favorite LB shop! Side note: I own a bike shop in East TN now. They are one of the inspirations of getting into this business!

I LOVE this shop! It is like going to a vintage neighborhood bar where you can talk to very friendly mechanics while they work on your bike. I have an additional success story with them. They got me a new road bike for a very reasonable price and now I am on that bike about 200 miles a week!

Personally, I love the whole neo-retro builds I have been seeing online lately. I am currently riding a 1986 Specialized Allez (my friend actually bought the bike new right after college) with more modern 10 speed components, updated carbon fork, and other parts. It rides like a dream compared to my newer full car carbon steed, so much so, I am selling the newer bike. I have plans on upgrading the components to newer Shimano stuff as money allows. I cold worked the rear stays and dropouts to fit the newer 10 speed hub.

I'm so glad you featured The Bicycle Stand. There are a lot of great shops in SoCal, but this is my favorite for the vintage focus and how easy Evan is to work with. There's always something new (old) to look at every time I stop by. Evan has helped me with so many bikes, from a neo-retro Bianchi Tipo Corsa build for a friend to a wild wood-rimmed '53 Galmozzi in orange and lime green. Can't say enough good things about the shop. Oh, Evan's also a fantastic painter. I don't know what his availability is these days, but if you get a chance to have a frame painted by him, take it. You won't be disappointed.

I grew up in Nottingham England, my first job just down the road from the former Raleigh Factory, Carltons were made in Worksop North Nottinghamshire. I think Raleigh and Carlton stopped making bikes in England in the early 1980s. I can remember dreaming of owning a Carlton Criterion or Corsair as a teenager. Great to see a Carlton In the US being appreciated. Great shop, thanks for the vid.

He mentioned the old bike with 750 B wheels. Ive worked on/restored some very old bikes. Several times, my neighborhood bike shop has called me up to refurbish older roadbikes or provide vintage parts for their custmers. Ive learned a lot in 15 yrs. Id encourage anyone watching this channel to familiarize themselves with wheel size standards. I wont go into any detail, but its fascinating, and makes you the expert on wheels in nearly every discussion.
Up here in Canada, it seems a lot of 1970's/80's roadbikes were sold with 27" wheels, just a touch larger than 700. Just enough difference to make brake reach an issue, and tire selection is very limited. Twenty seven inch were usually found on lower priced bikes, but not always. Schwinn used some weirdo wheel sizes too. While restoring a 60's Schwinn traveller, I realized new tires were gonna be tough to find. Customer got his bike back about a year later. Ive also had shop owners give me 1950s/60's bikes for free, cuz they figgered they couldnt get tires. I happened to know that modern 700 × 35mm would mount perfectly, because I knew wheel standards. Another fun adventure can be installing modern road tires on vintage rims. I have one wheelset, 700c Gentleman rims, 36 spoke on tall flange Campagnolo record hubs. Lovely wheelset, I used on a few of my builds, close to 50 yrs old I figger. I always dread mounting new tires on em. Ive broken so many levers, haha. Anyway, great video. I was drooling.

I WILL VISIT THIS BIKE SHOP. I own a Modern Day 2021 Grave Bike and I paid about $1,200. It is ok, but it has nothing in my Baby, my 1984 Raleigh Sportiff I rebuilt from the ground up on behalf of my late Pops who passed away from Covid-19 Monday, December 27, 2021. When he introduced me to vintage bicycles as a kid, I took them for granted, but I kept it in my heart when he told my Vintage Bikes are reliable and the way to go long term. He told me to just take care of them.
When I go to this shop, I am definitely buying “Vintage” as soon as I walk in!

  • @borderlands6606
    @borderlands6606 ปีที่แล้ว +6

What's weird is the bikes our group rode in the 1980s and 90s, would all be considered collectable now, with some gear pure unobtainium. Almost none of those UK builders are still making, and the majority have passed on. Quite a few rode 1960s bikes, some had 1950s, one guy rode a 1930s frame and all were virtually identical to then contemporary bikes with the exception of details like seat stay diameter. Time marches on. To me, one downtube friction lever is the same as another, and if it keeps a bike on the road, go for it. Front derailleurs are another area where working competence outweighs authenticity, as ring diameter, seat tube angle and throw have conspired to make equipment redundant.

great shop. been there many times. definitely lots of eye candy. used to ride up from Newport. I do try and look up bike shops in areas I might be in or near. there are many great shops, though I've found they might also have funky hours of operation. having older bikes it's always a hunt to find a shop that has not just new parts and accessories. one should always seek out the shops that are available . like the bike stand, you'll be happy, amazed and maybe thrilled walking out with something new to you

The emphasis on freedom with bicycles in this video is what my inclination is. There are so many channels and cycling content creators that lean on both extremes of cutting edge tech and vintage, chasing only wireless or friction shifters, only alt components or aero stuff, etc. that "freedom" loses its meaning.
I wish to see modern frames with retro mechanical bling parts, retro frames with the latest components, bog standard bikes with expensive gear, expensive steeds with aliexpress stuff, electric and mechanical parts harmonizing together in some weird frankenbike, etc.
If it all works out fine, functional, and nondetrimental, then more power. I strive for that ethos in freedom of choice and freedom from paradigms.
