That pre-dynatech Raleigh 753 is nice and the nouvo record ti Raleigh bike nice too. Got offered Gerry Knetemans 753 team bike 30 yrs ago it's now in the Brooklands Museum looking a bit forlorn tbh - I have Fignons road 89 bike - wish I had his iconic 753 time trial bike with smaller front disc wheel he road on Champs Elysees mind !
Felipe Gimondi had so much class so he was the first significant rider I followed. Barry Hoban was second and Walter Godefroot close behind. After that, no one could match Sean Kelly.
The bike would be a Bianchi with full Campy or in a pinch, Universal brakes equipped. But the Kogo Miyatas were fantastic too.
Absolutely favorite bike for me was the paganini with full campag, gp4 magic rims. Bling!!!. Heros, Giani Bunio, duclo lazalle, Rominger,Yates, colourful Jerseys, shiney bikes, and skins of leather!!
If you ever get I et to Germany theres a bike shop that restores vintage bikes in Berlin.
Ti Raleigh Professional 531c
Great segment. I still ride my '77 PX-10 and my 1999 LeMond, they are not treated like museum pieces but upgraded with mid range components. They both ride great, I will never buy a "modern" bike. Both of these bikes will serve me to the end of my days!

Fun tour of the shop. Loved seeing these bikes. But….always a but. A catalog of inaccuracies. To name a few: Saying a bike was full C Record when the brakes and rear derailleur weren’t, Full Super Record when it was a mix of Nuovo Record and Super Record. Having a full and complete example of a 40 year old bike is difficult. Having a well maintained and functioning example is great in and of itself and rare. No need for claims beyond that.
Just wish. This was shot in 4K so we all could enjoyed these machines of beauty.
Definitely need to think about camera upgrades
What a lovely collection. Just saw a review of the latest S-works costing £13000 and it'll be superseded very quickly and obsolete a few years later. I'm sure it's great to ride but it didn't make me smile when i saw it. By tomorrow I'll hardly remember what it looked like apart from the fact it was black. Some of those vintage bikes are jaw droppingly beautiful and will remain so forever. Wonderful 😁👍

True story: two friends bought bikes in 1996. One bought a DeRosa with Chorus 8 and the other got a Trek OCLV with 105.
Today the OCLV is worth about $400 and the DeRosa $4000
1:50. “Those are the bikes we couldn’t afford as kids”. I know that’s the case for me, and for many other collectors too! (Although my “collection” is more of a “random assortment”!). I have to agree that the TI-Raleigh bike and kit holds a special place in my heart. (Unfortunately, I’ll never own one of those bikes!)

Always nice to see a collection - I collect team race bikes from 1975 to 2010 pre-electronics/disc brakes - eg Sean Kelly/Concorde SLX S/rec, Laurent Fignon/753 S/rec Raleigh, Malcolm Elliot (last ever bike I collected) Super Record Motorpoint/Opera, Miguel Indurain/1995 Pinarello/S-Rec...etc...etc...

I worked in a dream bike shop. Every morning I went to work was like being under the tree on Christmas morning. I had plenty of money, and access to wholesale parts
BUT,
the bike craze had hit full-blown. I rode a Cilo (Bass Sports).. not because I wanted a full Record, Nuovo Record with Weinmann brakes Cilo, but because the Colnago Super just didn’t exist. We rode the best we could find and often the search was long and unfruitful.
Watching this made me sadly miss my 1989 Bottecchia SL Campagnolo Chorus. My first road bike. Wish I still had it.

Fantastic video, some really beautiful bikes there. My favourite from the late 80's was the PDM teams Concorde Squadra. I recall they used to be advertised in Winning magazine at the time.

Back in the eighties I bought a Rossin Ghibli 57 cm steel frame. It had a seat tube angle of 75 degrees and at that time I didn’t know it but it was too steep for me. So it actually took me 20 years to unlock the full potential of the frame by putting a piece of a broomstick between the handlebars to stop me from falling off the bloody end. That was the first time I experienced the thing that is called planing. At the time I was riding it on a tacx fortius hometrainer and my power jumped from around 200 watts to 270-280 watts and this feeling of it just being so damned hard completely disappeared. It felt like starting a motor and then when it gets going, it just keeps going. I no longer have the frame, because I thought I could build a better bike and when I realized my mistake it was too late. The carbon bike I built didn’t have that property and I have now come to the conclusion that it was the steel frame. The big question I now have is, is this planing feature something all steel frames have or is it only some of them and why isn’t anybody talking about it ?. I mean for me that feature was a game changer, being on that bike was like being on drugs it was that addictive. For me modern bike frames is like the storie “The emperor's new clothes” by H.C. Andersen.
One thing I find odd is restoring the bikes to their former glory, I would never do that. I would build them up with modern components once I knew the frame was okay, some nice advances have been made in the component area.
Interesting stuff, just read up some more on planing. I have no idea why it’s not been adopted in future bikes, UCI ruling no doubt! Not sure if you’ve seen the Colnago Master build I did. Retro frame Campagnolo Delta callipers with 11 speed Groupset. That definitely was the best of both worlds. Thanks for watching and sharing your memories and knowledge. All the best 👍
Congrats on having owned a Ghibli. It's on my list that's for sure. On bikes I had owned and ridden for years I went and had a proper bike fit to sort out some niggles that had arisen over time and which transformed my life so I hear what you are saying. It wasn't a whole lot of changes either, just a bit of tweaking. Well worth the investment as it made the bikes way more enjoyable to ride.

and the BEST--G. Saronni's 1982 World champion red Colnago...mine is full C-Record with a SR rear derailleur because I swapped out the C-Record it had (looks too nice) and the Cobalto brakes which are basically SR models.

Stephen Moore......I was living [and riding my Gazelle 'Champion Mondiale'] in Chambery in 1989. So I had the privilege of seeing Greg Lemond 'in the flesh' during that year's Tour de France and in the World Championships - which was held in Chambery - both of which he won!
I regularly trained on the WC circuit [really brutal course] as well as the Col de Revard and down to Aix les Bain - which the Tour went through that year. Brilliant times and a truly gorgeous area.

I remember being a teenager in the early 80´s drooling over the freewheel catalogue,writing out loads of lists of the components and frame I was going buy when I left school and got a job,unfortunately got into scooters mod scene,in the early 90’s looking through the loot newspaper I saw a holdsworth Nuevo record bike and just had to buy it and I’ve been riding and racing ever since,joining the Archer RC and I remember going on my first club run with a young 13 year old Bradley Wiggins.vintage wise I’ve a gazelle champion mondiale AA special,so I’ve a soft spot for the gazelle although the chain looks a little short 😉Teamwise 80´s I’d have to say super confex ,90´s for me is Once.
Thé 90’s for me was my era I loved the pro racing back then.I live near the Pyrenees now so I’m still loving the cycling life.

My first road bike was 1976 Miyata 5 speed. Japanese brands were doing well in those years. I had a Univega and a Fuji in the '80s. All great bikes!

I also had a Gazelle Champion Mondiale [531P Reynolds tubing] when I first got into 'serious' cycling in the mid-80's - bought it from Fred Williams in Wolverhampton. Brilliant and gorgeous-looking little bike [pearlescent white with chromed front forks]. Did countless races, Crits, TT's, Audax events etc on it - never let me down and was a really comfortable ride.
Sadly, I decided to take it with me on a holiday to America - literally on my first day in Los Angeles I went out for a ride and was taken out by a hit-and-run motorist. My beautiful Gazelle was a total write-off. Absolutely broke my heart.

Awesome stuff. It's great to see that most of us collect these bikes for the same reasons. They were ridden by our heroes, and we couldn't afford them when we were young. For those reasons I have a Colnago Tecnos with full C record. A mint Ti raleigh with NOS Super Record and SSC rims. A NOS Bottecchia with full Mavic SSC. A Merckx SLX, with Dura Ace in Motorola colours (of course), which I raced on in the 90s. A 753 Peugeot awaiting a build. A Brian Rourke 653 with a mixed kit build. A 1997 Litespeed (Linski built) with period Dura Ace. Lots of others. My favourite: The Merckx. No other frame I've had comes close for ride quality.

Andy. As a 12 year old I remember watching brief TV highlights of I guess the 1982 Tour de France. Watching those fit looking riders on slim, shining bikes inspired me. The following summer I got an Ivory coloured Harry Quinn (a basic bike made by Coventry Eagle licensing Harry Quinn's name). It looked the business! The short mudguards were removed & toe clips & straps added. Now I could copy my heroes: Robert Millar, Bernard Hinault & Tony Doyle. The team has to be Renault-Elf, but Panasonic-Raleigh is another good shout.
Amusingly on this damp day I've been fettling. Not on anything sleek. A colleague at work has acquired his grandfathers 1947 BSA rod braked roadster. The hub gear is a BSA with a broken selector chain. I've pulled the hub apart, repaired the chain, freed a stuck pawl, & spent most of the day removing the grime & rust. Hopefully it will inspire my colleague to clean the rest of the bike. I believe my assistance is required on some other parts of the bike. PS the rims are so heavy I reckon they could happily go on a moped.

That was brilliant Andy. The way you two both talked about the bikes from this period was exactly the way I and most of my fellow cycling buddies would do too. It's great having the all singing and fancy carbon E tap bikes from today's current market but all that chrome and polished alloy metal with proper paint jobs makes them a work of art . You both shared the passion - in abundance might I add, so a big chapeau from this side of the Pennines. The Raleigh in the front window did it for me !

I've got a collection, all bought used. I recently really like English made Raleigh after getting a 1970s Raleigh Super Course with Cappella lugs. Great rider. Now I have a Super Course MK 2, and lower end 1970s Grand Prix need restoring.
Before I rode only Italian, Bianchi, Rossin etc. I thought as a young man originally from Italy, that Italian bikes were the best.. Now I even like the Japanese built Schwinn touring bikes and I have a Passage columbus tubed touring bike. A surprising favorite I bought a Paramount PDG 40 mountain bike made in Japan. So great bikes from all over the world that sometimes can be had for a deal. My favorite the Paramount PDG 40 I use as a commuter I got from a guy that had worked at the local Schwinn dealer gave it to me for 120. I guess new bike manufacturers don't make much cash from me 🤓😎😆

Left school in 1976 and my first bike was a Swinnerton 531 built by Mercian of Derby. Watching this just inspires me to begin a quest to start a retro project to replace that bike. Thanks for sharing…

Fantastic video. Such amazing machines. A common thread I here among bike enthusiasts is that the favorite bikes are the ones we pined for as kids. I started riding / racing at 15. I always wanted a bike with anything Campagnolo. I had magazine clippings of gleaming Campagnolo bits.
Today, part of my modest collocation is a beautiful 1991 Specialized Epic Carbon I built up with period Campy Chorus (8spd) It is a stunning bike. It was a dream come true and I love when people ask where it came from since it seems Specialized bikes were not often fitted with Campagnolo.

Obviously love the Master Piu for the Gilco crimped tubes, but that Gazelle with the wishbone seatstays and wheel indent is fantastic. The Mavic Heliums really finish it off.
I myself have an early De Bernardi (Tecnotrat of Cuneo) built with Columbus SL tubing which is a beautiful frame rides superbly and is extremely light with 10 speed Ultegra gruppo. I went for this because everyone has got Colnago, De Rosa, Wilier, Bianchi etc, and wanted something different. That's why the Gazelle does it for me.
Fantastic video chaps! I have a small collection, my very first racing bike that I competed in, a 1983 Raleigh Europa 12, fully restored, like you say, not high end at all, but it means the world to me :-) Kept my last race/training bike a 653 Graham Weigh and also have a an ‘83 Raleigh Sirocco (the Claret version), in 501. Recently sold a Raleigh Railde 531, mint but just too large for me, would dearly love to find my white Swinnerton 531 Pro frameset from back in the day, still got most of the components from it to reassemble it! Keep my eyes open for other potential projects, my job and main passion is motorcycle related but I can’t shake my past on human powered two wheels. Keep up the good work Andy! Your recent holiday trip took you past Colwyn Bay where I live, glad you enjoyed the roads, the traffic and standard of driving puts me off these days!

Like you, I “can’t shake my past” either! I’ve been riding and racing since the early ‘80’s, (age 14) and now have quite of collection of (somewhat) modern road and CX bikes. But, this summer, I found a new prize to add to the collection…a near-mint Fuji del Rey…like you say, “not high-end at all” but the exact model that was my first “real” bike all those years ago! I cracked the frame on the original (way back in ‘85) and now enjoy memory rides on the “new” replacement!

Mitch, I am 6’ 1”, my frame set was approx 23”, so ta sound like yours would be too small, chrome forks and rear triangle, I have some (poor) racing pictures of me on it. Also my name on top tube Lol

My favourite is the Gazelle but the Neo classic theme is the way forwards with these bikes, my 2 Basso bikes a Gap with Centaur Record mix and a Viper with Record Chorus mix are ridden regularly and reliable. @@BikeItUK ......Hi Andy. In the late 1980's, my brother bought a Colnago Master Piu direct from Ernesto - he had it 'custom-painted' with the Italian tricolour. [predominantly white, but with green and red bands at the junction of the top and down tube with the seat tube]. It took NINE months to be delivered!
It was fitted with 'power forks' [chromed] which Ernesto had just launched and caused quite a lot of controversy. [I remember Eddy Mercxk and many others claiming that they were dangerously unsafe!]
Whatever the case - it was a stunning looking bike! But I have to say, it was really heavy [compared to my Gazelle Champion Mondiale] and the 'straight-down' power forks took some getting used to.
Interestingly, my brother also bought a Dawes 753 as his second/winter bike - which was painted up in black and used by Shane Sutton when he rode for the Raleigh-Dawes pro team. [He bought it from Rob Nixon, the Raleigh-Dawes team mechanic who we were good friends with].
It used to crack us if we were riding behind my brother! Clearly, it had taken some rough treatment from Sutton [typically!] and the frame was out of track - so it would 'crab' as it went down the road!
By the way, for the past 20+ years, I have ridden GIOS bikes - all custom-built by Alfredo Gios in Italy. I started in 1998 with the all aluminium 'Cinquantenario' [50th anniversary Kelme team issue] but with carbon front forks - and have also had the 'Carbon', 'Carbon Plus' and 'Gress'.
Absolutely lovely and much-loved little bikes and I know that Aldo and Marco Gios have continued the tradition by producing a range of gorgeous 'vintage' frames. It would be great to see you do a feature on GIOS if possible?

Fantastic video, thank you, my personal favourite from the era has to be the t i raleigh what a team they were and i totally agree about the colours, red,black,yellow. My own bike which i bought from new and raced in the early 90s is a Dawes Omega, Reynolds 653 tubing, shimano 600 group set, campagnolo omega wheels on campagnolo sante hubs, it hangs in my garage totally imaculate, original and complete, what memories.

Outstanding collection of Exceptional bikes. I really think you should seriously consider building your first frame from tubes and lugs. I made mine with no experience at all simply reading a book by Andre Chimonas - Lugged bicycle frame construction, watching his step by step TH-cam videos and had a friend Master Welder check the solder joints. Minimal equipment needed. Been riding it since 2012 and it feels like a Ferrari of bikes -Amazing. A pic is on this comment avatar.

Forgot to answer your questions. Love the Roberts for sure. Raleigh has always been my favorite. Growing up i always wanted a Gran Prix instead my parents bought me an Atala Gran Prix. I have a Raleigh Gran Prix i got from ebay and is my custom 3 speed to ride with my Wife and daughter on weekends. Favorite rider Greg LeMond for sure.

Yes the Raleigh Team Panasonic is quite special totally get why it’s your favorite. I have enjoyed all of the videos, binge watched them during Covid lockdown. Appreciate all the restoration details and hard work. It’s excellent you are breathing New Life to these under rated Bicycles that will last a Lifetime with proper care!
I think the contemporary high-performance groupsets and wheels sit very well on steel frames, be they vintage or modern. That beautiful Chas Roberts with blacked out Shamal Mille Wheels and carbon Record makes my heart skip a beat.

Favorite bike: Gazelle Champion Mondial.
At the time I had love-hate feelings towards Gazelle. Didn’t’ had the money to buy a racing level Gazelle and made do with my Belgisch Rijwielhuis ‘velo Emile’. However; fitted with Campagnolo nuovo Strada it was, and still is ! In hindsight I am pretty pleased I bought that bike and am delighted i still have it in fairly good condition. But seeing the Gazelle in your episode just now made me smile and think how much I had wanted a Gazelle.
What amazes me though is that there seems to be a secret stash of Campagnolo parts out there! How do you all mange to get your hands on those?!

In the 1980s I built a raleigh system u frame and forks with shimano dura ace mavic wheels cineli bars and stem and a San Marco Rolls saddle, I loved that bike if you ever had a problem with your raleigh frame you could call the specialist division, those were the good old days for me at the time it was great to see that same bike being riden in the tour de France
Actually the raleigh frame and forks I used wasn't the system u team frame it was the castorama team replica
I’m pretty sure the System U and Castorama team at some point used the same bike

I have just discovered this channel (TH-cam knows what you like!) and enjoyed this episode very much. When living in Europe I participated in many retro rides (l"Eroica, Retro Ronde. Velo Vintage, etc) but here in Canada there is not much of a a vintage racing bike community so it was great to see a store so full of treasures! I will admit to a Raleigh soft spot (I have an SBDU bike in Team Raleigh USA colours) but also have a pristine Masi Gran Criterium, Colnago Super, Rickert Spezial and a Peugeot PXN-10, plus more recent bikes, including a custom Marinoni and a Tommasini. Steel is real! Looking forward to all those restoration videos and further encouragement!

Had a 1984 or so Kuahara as my original street bike, with the first generation look pedals and smith shoes. Loved that bike. Unfortunately my wife doesn't subscribe to the"You can never have enough bikes". Out of his collection I like the Gazelle.

Back in the day my favorite team was Le Vie Claire. The retro bike I’d like to have are the Huffy bikes made for the Le Vie Claire. I have a double interest there as some of my family members worked for Huffy.

you do know that Huffy and Schwinn didn't make top end road frames. Even the ones for 7-eleven in the 80s were made by Serotta (a custom builder from Colorado). I guess the La Vie Claire were by some European builder.
@@ralphc1405 I do know that both Schwinn and Huffy made high end road bikes. The Bikes Huffy Built for team 7-11 and the 84 U.S. Olympic team and for Le Vie Claire (Though only the North American riders ride the Huffy’s and the rest road Hinault Bikes).
Many of Bikes that were branded Huffy for those teams were either fabricated at Ben Serrota’s shop or were built at Huffy’s Specialty Bike and R&D center in Dayton, OH.
As I said my sister worked at Huffy’s main production plant, at that time, in Celina, OH. So in knew several of the fabricators who worked at the Celina plant who went to either Ben Serrota’s Shop in upper New York State (Not Colorado. The Serrota Colorado was built at his New York shop after he completed his contract with Huffy and were named Colorado because he sold a lot of his custom bikes in that State.)or their Dayton facility on temporary assignments and built some of those frames themselves.
As for Schwinn I bought a Schwinn Paramount built at the Schwinn PDG facility in Waterford, WI (Now Waterford Bikes) just before Schwinn was sold and started building bikes overseas, including the Paramount and yes, at that time my Paramount was a top tier road bike. In fact I still own it and it’s ride quality is still one of the best of any bike I’ve ever road.

Do they bring back your youth and last and last! Not so much in my experience - will they be loved in the future like their older cousins ?
Yes I hope so but perhaps not as much .
So enjoy them and use them as they were part of a golden era - our youth !

When you visit USA, visit the Bisbee Bicycle Brothel, in Arizona. Yes the business originally started in an old western brothel. All vintage bicycles.
