This song was Brian May’s brainchild... The story goes that the guys were inspired by an audience that sang with them all concert, and before the encore, the audience sang a chant/song *to* the band. So Freddie and Brian challenged each other to write an audience-participation song . Brian came back with “We Will Rock You”... Freddie’s was “We Are The Champions” . These two songs were released as a double-A side single (rather than the usual A-side/B-side single)- and radio DJs ran with it, playing the two songs back-to-back (as they appeared on the album itself) - then Queen ran with that, and performed it like that in concerts. (In some later concerts, they put John & Freddie’s song “Friends Will Be Friends” between them- but traditionally, it was just “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions “ paired)

This was filmed in Rogers backyard garden of his house. They noticed that the audience were starting to sing at their concerts. It was not done that much at concerts back then. BRIAN stated that he wanted the audience to be able to participate so he came up with the stomp stomp clap.
This song was written by Guitarist Brian May as an anthem which is why the beat is so simple and strong. It was intended for the audience to sing, clap and stomp it along with the band.

Hey Hon, I AGREE... "Who Wants To Live Forever" is a MUST (BOTH the music video, AND a live performance because they are quite different.) Just a happy FYI, tho: Freddie was not sick at the time that they recorded/performed the song. (He looks GORGEOUS in the video, just my FanGirl opinion!) It was actually done as part of the music for the movie "Highlander" originally. Then, it came to have a different meaning for all of us fans later on, given how Freddie did end up getting sick/passing away so young. (It is true that during Queen's last tour in 1986 - which is when Freddie was performing the song live - he was having aches/pains, depleted energy and his Dr. was pestering him to come in for an HIV test... but he wasn't tested/diagnosed until 1987. Just FYI.)

Question: “Did Freddie Mercury know he had AIDS when Queen recorded "Who Wants to Live Forever"?” Answer: Thank you for the A2A: According to a couple of his very close, personal, friends he had first been tested with the, then, new HTLV-III/LAV ELISSA tests in 1985, and the results came back positive. However, the Dr then told him that the tests were new and were the first generation of the tests ever released - they were still experimental essentially - and that it had since been discovered that they had actually given false positives. They also weren’t designed to test if patients had ‘AIDS’, they were designed to test the blood supply in hospitals for the virus. This lead to them discovering that when used to test for the virus in people they could in fact give false positives. Initially this was taken by the medical people to be a ‘rare’ thing, however as more and more people were tested with them the Dr’s behind the tests, and the Dr’s doing the testing realized that the tests were in fact highly flawed, and false positives were not rare, they were actually very common. In fact those first generation tests had an approximate 50% chance of giving a false positive. As a result while the next generation of tests were developed Dr’s testing people were advised to do multiple tests, and be very careful with how the tests were handled, stored and conducted. For example, being pregnant could result in a false positive, certain illnesses, disease etc could lead to false positives, even just feeling run down and having a low immune system at the time of being tested could result in a false positive. They were also not able to detect if someone was recently infected(ie - someone that was tested in the first 3-4 months** of infection would come back as negative) **This ‘window’ was variable, and depended on several factors, but it was widely accepted that the tests couldn’t detect the virus until it had been in the body for at least 12 weeks, and in some cases longer. It was said at the time, and even in later years - by several people - that simply shaking, or putting the test down too hard could turn a negative into a positive - how true that is I don’t know, but it is something that several people have stated; although it may have been in jest at how many things could result in false positives, and wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. But I digress. The Dr was said to have told Freddie that the tests had a roughly 50% chance of being wrong, so he wanted Freddie to have a whole batch of tests run, and then they would look at the results as a whole (e.g- The patient would have 10 tests taken over a year or so, and if they are all positive(or most of them are) then you’re more than likely positive and they will monitor you for known symptoms etc while you try and live a healthier lifestyle. Basically the more tests you have taken, and over the longer period of time the more ‘accurate’ their educated ‘guess’ would be essentially.) Freddie was said to be not amused at this, and had been worrying a lot while waiting for the results to come in, and broke down when told the test was positive, only then to become furious when the Dr went on to say that the results ‘might’ be wrong, so not to worry as they needed to do an entire batch of the tests just to be sure. He’s said to have told the Dr that he felt fine, and that he wasn’t going to go through the hell of having anymore of these tests when they had such a high chance of being wrong, and that he’d get another test done when there was a new, better, and far more accurate test available. Freddie had apparently been talked into taking this test by someone he was very close because of the fact that he’d recently been told that one of his old friends from New York had died from AIDS, and that a couple of other friends of his from the US had been diagnosed with AIDS. It’s ‘after’ he was said to have had this test that he very abruptly left Germany, without saying goodbye to anyone - not even Barbara who he was living with at the time, nor his German lover. He simply upped and left without a word, moved back to the UK and settled down with Jim Hutton, leaving his old partying lifestyle behind. By 1986 he was certainly worried he might not be well. He made several comments to people that in retrospect people have been taken to mean that he either knew, or at the very least highly suspected he was - or could be - sick. The magic tour was also the last time he said he would tour because he couldn’t do it anymore - the band thought he was joking. But he had noticed that he hadn’t got the energy that he used to have. He wasn’t officially diagnosed with AIDS until May 1987, and according to the story he kept it to a very small number of people for quite some time while he processed it all. So did he ‘know’ - as in with medical verification - that he was sick when the song was written ? Maybe, maybe not. It really depends on who’s story you believe; whether the official story is the actual truth, or whether that too was partly, or entirely a lie, and whether the stories that some of his close friends have said is true or not. After all, when the story first ran in the paper that he’d been tested it was due to a ‘so called’ friend leaking stories to the media for money. Freddie, and the bands manager get out in front of it and said it was the sensible thing to do given the climate of the times etc, and that it was simply for peace of mind, and not because he was worried etc. Back to the song. The band have said that songs often had ‘nods’ and ‘winks’ to other things, and double meanings in certain lyrics. Like Rogers song to his children also contained a ‘nod’ to Freddie. He was private, and didn’t want to talk about his personal life, but at the same time they were all very close and working together in the studio a lot. So it would be hard ‘not’ to notice changes in their friend, and it would be hard not to worry about him when AIDS was all over the news, and front pages of the papers etc So, in my opinion, it’s highly possible that the lyrics were either consciously, or sub-consciously, influenced by their friendship, and what was happening around them - e.g:- drawing inspiration from what they saw in the media and worrying about Freddie. Not to mention if Freddie himself had any input into the song, and changed things around - as he often did - then it’s also possible that he too may have drawn from the things around him, and his worries. They would often play this song near the beginning of their concerts. Only it was a faster heavier version. Then they would play the traditional version near the end of the concert along with it's sister song We are the Champions. If you like this song try the "fast" version. The beat has something so primitive but effective. I remember at the time I was 16 years old and some of the guys in the courtyard during a recess period started this up. A few joined, a few more... soon everyone no matter if sitting on benches or not was joining. Imagine if you can something like +100 teen boys in a fairly small 4 sided walled in courtyard doing the stomp-stomp-clap stomp-stomp-clap.... the couple of teachers that were on duty to oversee us all... skedaddled. It just instilled a sense of power, of unity, of taken on the world in the ones doing it. I guess in those teachers it instilled a real sense of impending menace. :)
I bought this album when it came out...and saw them live on the next tour...the funny thing is...my daughter paid more for the movie tickets to see "Bohemian Rhapsody" than I did to see them live!
In concert, they would play this as an encore with We Are The Champions right behind it. You should really listen to both. Also, Somebody To Love live. Listen to the live version they have so much heart behind them. That's what makes Queen so special.
Y'all really should rent Bohemian Rhapsody. I think you'll enjoy a little history on the members of the band and how they came together. They play all their best songs and it gives you all the feels!
I love that My sons love 80's music, they flip though stations in the car and they hear Queen and they both insist on that being the one to listen to and sing along with every song. SO I relate with what you said about your Nephew. That is awesome!!
This video was filmed in Roger Taylor (Queen drummer) back yard. There is another great Queen song they performed that same day called "Spread Your Wings". Freddie's voice soars into the Stratosphere on that one!
As an old white guy, this was the whitest “get pumped” song ever in the 80s. We loved it in our little suburban football games. It doesn’t make sense anymore with way more intense rap and techno beats that can make someone feel ready to rock. But it was cool to see y’all give it a little love the best you could lol 😆
"Somebody to Love" live Montreal 1981. Will blow your mind!!! You can't fully experience the song unless you hear this live version. The Studio version just don't do it justice.
I'm SO glad i stumbled upon your site. I've been feeling a little sad lately. You both always put a smile on my face, your "good vibes" are infectious...TY.
Yesyesyes, love you darlings!! Queen were so diverse and they made sooo many songs. This vid was made in the drummers (Roger) backyard, I even think Freddie was a little tipsy and threw up in the bushes? I suggest Live Aid. 20 epic minutes in music history. It was a charity gig for the famine in Ethiopië. Much bless to You and keep up the good work.
Back in the '70's they opened with this at Madison Square Garden. The place almost fell into Grand Central Station below with everyone in the place stamping and clapping.
Played this at every football, basketball, game, every wrestling tournament every single game we played at when I was in High School..Players ran out..this was playing. That was a long long time ago (like early 90s) but man...It was a required memorization for high school band...Great reaction..love love this song.
Watch their Live-Aid performance. Many many many people consider it the greatest live rock performance ever. The amount of people watching over television combined with the stadium... it was electric and magical. You guys would love it.
Ashton has fantastic taste in music. Much love Half & Jai! I find myself smiling and waving to y'all... hehehe. Thanks for the about out! Another one bites the dust is another well known Queen song with an awesome beat.
Trivia -- notice Brian's guitar in this one -- it's not the Red Special. It was so cold out, and with all the snow on the ground, he was afraid his primary guitar might get damaged, so he used a back-up guitar to make this video.
Gotta be "Somebody To Love (live) 1981" next!!! It's mindblowing. They are even better live if you can believe it! A must. Freddie has no equal on the stage.
It wasn't until I saw Bohemian Rhapsody that I found out Queen sung this. I was more into the Highlander theme from Princess of the Universe by Queen that my boy Apathy sampled for his song immortal...that and the Flash Gordon theme song by Queen.
I think this should always be listen to along with the next track, We Are The Champions. They always played it like that on 96Rock in ATL back in the day.
Almost all great music in the 80's was so emotionally powerful that the instrumental was essential as it allowed the audience to process what they were listening to before the heightened finally, some songs such as "Bohemian Rhapsody" absolutely needed this.
Its kinda long but you wont regret queen live aid. Freddie Mercury.can hold a crowd in the palm of his hands
And if you do live aid, please do the whole 20 minute set, don't break it up in parts. You won't get the full effect of it, if you break it up.

Queen - Somebody To Love Live in Montreal and also their live aid performance are a must!
The goal of writing this song was to give the live crowds something they would participate in.
Check out "Spread your wings" by queen, and "somebody to love" (especially the live version in Montreal of somebody to love) you will really like it :)
Freddie and David Bowie collaborated on "Under Pressure" another good one ... "One Vision" is another awesome song Love Queen❤
Yeah all of the members of Queen were super talented. Freddie Mercury was a genius. I miss him.
Man, since you're opening to Queen you should do a reaction to radio from the live at aids benefit concert. That's one for the ages but Queen had so many
They would often play this song near the beginning of their concerts. Only it was a faster heavier version. Then they would play the traditional version near the end of the concert along with it's sister song We are the Champions. If you like this song try the "fast" version. I can't decide which I like more.
Check the trailer for the movie "Bohemian rhapsody", a recent biopic on this band, with Rami Malek (the Mr. Robot actor) playing Freddie Mercury.
Movie was great
The song it outstanding! Thanks for what you two keep doing!
Jai does have a wonderful laugh😀
I knew when you said you'd never heard Queen before that this one would get ya back to 'Yes definitely I've heard them' 😎
Thanks for the video!
Peace!
Hi from the United Kingdom Nottinghamshire
I grew up listening to Rock Groups in 1977 went to see Queen it's ONE of the best I have seen And now suffering from Buzzing eardrums standings not away from the massive speaker's it was Awesome
I'm here for Jai's hair, the red is my favorite. You look great!
“I’ve paid my dues, time after time...”
Love the hoodie Jai!!! Always stylin and profilin'!!!😎😍
Check out Don't Stop Me Now. That's my favorite Queen song
You've got to do "Fat Bottom Girls"
Yesyesyes good suggestions🔥
YESSSS... "Fat Bottomed Girls" LIVE at Milton Keynes in 1982 is the BEST. (It includes Freddie pole dancing!)
My theme song!!!
It's always weird hearing this song without being backed up with we are the champions.
In concert, they would play this as an encore with We Are The Champions right behind it. You should really listen to both. Also, Somebody To Love live. Listen to the live version they have so much heart behind them. That's what makes Queen so special.
Love the joy you two spread! Good vibes fam💙💙🙌🏼🙌🏼
It seems cut in half without we are the champion's. Excellent work Half&Jai❤
It still works I bet if some sports team played it out the Blue that stadium would be rocking and everyone would know the song.
@@ritapreston3809 yes, I wasn’t saying it doesn’t get the job done. It still does indeed!
great with "We are the Champions. Somebody to love, Love of my life......just soooo many great Queen songs!
You’ve already earned my likes and my subscription, but the fact that you guys drink Bud Light platinum on top of it....you earned my love.
Ya know it's true love when you headband in unison!
Their Concert at Wembley Stadium is awesome!!!
Back in the '70's they opened with this at Madison Square Garden. The place almost fell into Grand Central Station below with everyone in the place stamping and clapping.
Brings back wonderful memories of my sons and their teammates taking the field before each game ready to kick some ass!
You have to listen to Innuendo! Its a masterpiece. I personally think its better than Bohemian Rhapsody!
I love Innuendo ❤
Absolutely AGREE !!!
Inuendo, the last album from queen.!!
Even as far back as the 90’s! We ( cheerleaders)used this to enter the gym for pep-rallies. This song has always rocked and still rocks!
Y'all have a blessed day 🙏
Ashton has fantastic taste in music. Much love Half & Jai! I find myself smiling and waving to y'all... hehehe. Thanks for the about out! Another one bites the dust is another well known Queen song with an awesome beat.
I am so sad I missed Queen at there greatness I was born in June of 1991 so just missed them rest in peace ✌️ Freddie mercury
See half, we told you you knew queen lol Much Love!!!!!!
Nothing but Good Vibes from N.C. Half and Jai. Peace and Love. Y'all keep doing your thing!
Freddie was the ultimate showman. 100% all the time.
Queen " Princes of the Universe " you will not regret it 🙂👍
We will rock you and we are the champions were played together back in the 70s on the radio.
There isnt anything simple about queen
Those guys rocked
I love you how started beating on the desk, which is exactly what they wanted you to do.
Keep going down the rabbit hole, a must on your Queen Playlist is Love of my Life, live in Rio ❤❤❤
Freddie was and will always be special
Hey Half if you ever wonder if Jai Loves You? Let me tell you she does! You can hear it in her voice and see it in her eyes! You are blessed brother..
Just joined the squad...Really appreciate you 2 gonna have to show my wife yall HOME TEAM...Keep it up nothin but love from Milw Wi....
💖💖💖 your red hair jai, looks awesome 👍👍 Queen is legendary, the music is so unique/awesome 👍🎶🔥🎸👍🎶🔥🎸 👍🎶🔥🎸
Of course he is loving it, there isnt a possibility to not love queen.
QUEEN has powerful music...👍👊😎
So glad I found ya'll, so positive, makes me smile!
The kids got GREAT taste 😜 What can I say ? Climb right on up into the Queen bus, cause we’ve got room for EVERYONE little dude !!!!
You two are amazing and work so well together. Good vibes to you both and God bless!!🇨🇦🇨🇦
Trivia -- notice Brian's guitar in this one -- it's not the Red Special. It was so cold out, and with all the snow on the ground, he was afraid his primary guitar might get damaged, so he used a back-up guitar to make this video.
RIP Heath! Love you and what you accomplished in your short life!!!!🍻
Gotta be "Somebody To Love (live) 1981" next!!! It's mindblowing. They are even better live if you can believe it! A must. Freddie has no equal on the stage.
It's awesome how it doesn't get old, decades later. 😁
It is Queen at their best.Rock and roll bravado.
Takes me back to basketball games, baseball games...stompin' the feet / clappin' the hands!🤗 GOOD TIMES!
It wasn't until I saw Bohemian Rhapsody that I found out Queen sung this. I was more into the Highlander theme from Princess of the Universe by Queen that my boy Apathy sampled for his song immortal...that and the Flash Gordon theme song by Queen.
This song should always be followed by We Are The Champions because that is how it was played on the radio for over thirty years.
You two have some great chemistry on camera. Keep it up! Blessings.
STOMP STOMP CLAP ...... ICONIC! 😁 Great reaction guys!!
They did 3 iconic sports anthems
We will rock you
We are the champions
Another one bites the dust
You almost have to be dead not to tap to this song lol 10 year old granddaughter is singing along .. this song is Timeless !!
This was the school football rally song when I was in high school....when the whole school stamped and clapped to the beat....fired up! Lol
All Queen songs are anthems.
