Queen made songs that let the audience feel like we were part of the band. This is one of my favorites. 😊

The song is penned by Brian May (the guitarist) and was made for the crowd participation. It is also recorded without any instruments (just a bit of guitar at the end). All claps and stomps were made by Queen members and all their staff clapping and stumping while recording in an abandoned church. Brian even found some old boards laying there and they made a perfect sound ....
And yes the song We are the champions, penned by Freddie was always played after that at the concerts and on the radio.

This song and We Are the Champions was played at every high school event😂❤These two songs aired together. The latter song was my senior class song and Prom theme song.😂❤❤Class of 82😂

You'll notice Brian isn't playing his famous "Red Special" here. Probably didn't want to expose it to the cold too much. It was a freezing day when they filmed this (in Roger's back garden, incidentally).

To answer your question: Yes. It had immediate traction at sporting events and here;s why: I was in high school when this song was new, I was a huge fan of Queen. Pep assemblies in the gym, bleachers, basketball games in the gym on wooden bleachers. We students started stamping the beat on the bleachers - it sounds EXACTLY like the record, I mean EXACTLY (p.s. the recording's "beat" is Queen & friends' boots stomping on floorboards in some old building - that's right, it's NOT DRUMS!). Anyway, back to 1977-1978, it got to the point where we were stomping the beat so much, so continuously, that people would start chanting the words, and then... after awhile, expecting the electric guitar player in the band on the main floor to suddently step in & perform the solo at the end (poor guy didn't expect it, didn't know it, etc., but eventually did give it a go once, I think, and did reasonably well for being in the equivalent of a "marching band".) Anyway, if you need convincing, go try it yourself - attend a local basketball game, start stomping the rhythm on the bleachers (if they're still wooden) & get this beat started in the crowd - you'll be amazed.

Gradually took hold over the years, but also with We Re The Champoins, which Freddie wrote with the same idea Brian did with this, it was so the audience could participate in concert, because they were already singing all the lyrics to their song when they performed live. Genius!! They’ll live on, always.

One of Queen's iconic anthems. Most people just think this song was always out ther and don't have any idea who wrote it or performed it. Brian May, (lead guitar) wrote this one.

On the radio We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions were always played together back to back. Probably cause they are short songs.

dude thats actually crazy to know, ive never gone out of my way to listen to this song itself and only ever heard it on radio so i just thought it was a weird song with two parts whenever it came on

@@MILLs_666 I always thought it was awesome that they played both, I just wondered why and realized after this video that they are short songs.

There is an awesome fast version of this in the 1981 Montreal concert. This was filmed in the garden of Roger Taylor's just purchased house that he didn't even yet have the keys for.

I’m not sure when it first started being played at sporting events. Maybe by the end of
The 80’s? It was a huge hit from the get go.

  • @ellet6560
    @ellet6560 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

It was released as a double-A single. I don't believe you've reacted to the "other" A side but you've definitely heard it! It's the last song they perform for their Live Aid set.
I had a 80 minute commute at the time of release and heard them several times daily. (Thank goodness I didn't carpool, I might have been kicked out for my singing!)
FUN FACT: There are no drums used on the studio recording. The stomping sound is just that, band and crew stamping their feet on the drum riser boards!
    Thanks.

Yes it is a short song but I've always associated this song as the intro to "we are the champions" since it's the song that always immediately follows during their live performances

There is an another official version of this that is kinda Hip Hop. See: We will Rock You (1991 bonus remix ruined by Rick Rubin)
I think it is better than the original.

No worries if it was before your time it is wonderful to discover things now; i have a funny story with this song.Back in the eighties when the Iron Curtain divided West and East Europe (literally!) we went on a school trip like an Exchange program for 10 days we went to Czechoslovakia (i was 15) and they took us to a cinema one night. The place was stacked with the communist army to watch The Platoon which was a weird experience in itself btw, but half way through they paused the film and started banging there boots to this rhythm and singing we will rock you! We joined in and for just one moment in time we were united!! It felt crazy to unite with 'the enemy' - a few years later the wall + the iron curtain was taken down but I will never forget that moment

    Google:
The main types of football are association football, American football, Canadian football, Australian rules football, Gaelic football, rugby league, and rugby union.
It has been estimated that there are 250 million association football players in the world,[1] and many play other forms of football.
Baseball started in the United States in the 1700s and 1800s. Many people in North America, South America, and East Asia play baseball, but the sport is most known in the United States and Japan.
How many countries are there in cricket?
The ICC currently has 108 member nations: 12 Full Members that play Test matches, and 96 Associate Members. The ICC is responsible for the organisation and governance of cricket's major international tournaments, most notably the Cricket World Cup, T20 World Cup, and ICC World Test Championship.
