      I was thinking of ordering a xeno from aliexpress, but when he mentioned the laser thing I got turned off, on aliexpress it has the SD2SP2 and the xeno chip and a mini DVD disc in the listing
      my question is what is that disc? if you have the xeno do you need to use a boot disc and is that what that is? or is just a disc with software for your PC like swiss etc,
      does using the xeno with a SD2SP2 require me to rely on a boot disc and the laser being tuned righ?

    • @Chris-Courage
      @Chris-Courage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andreamitchell4758 that disk must just be extra software to use other things. I know that with a xeno chip you should just be able to burn whatever game to a disk and have it load without the use of an extra boot disk. Like I mentioned before, I haven't had to make any lens adjustments but depending on the type of disks being used a minor lens adjustment might be needed

    • @andreamitchell4758
      @andreamitchell4758 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chris-Courage thanks but I meant
      if you want to load a backup from an SD gecko or an SD2SP2 with swiss ,do you need a boot disc for that? or would the xeno chip just automatically look for the swiss boot file and if it finds it on the D gecko or SD2SP2 then load it ,or is there a button combo or something
      I assumed that the disc was a boot disc for loading swiss from an SD /gecko/SD2SP2
      I just watched a tutorial about the POT mod and the guy said that it's because the DVD-R discs are darker on the laser side and the laser needs to be turned up brighter to compensate to read the darker colored discs, but a pressed disc would be the same color so it might not be an issue then I suppose

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the GC Loader for enabling homebrew. It replaces the entire dvd assembly with a pcb and sd card. Load your backups onto an sd card and good to go. No soldering required.

    • @coolaj86
      @coolaj86  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That didn't exist yet when I scripted the video. Also, it's still a bit pricey, DIY-ish, and not yet fully compatible with Swiss and other homebrew (i.e. emulators) - you can't update config or write save files to the inserted card.
      If you're going to take the whole thing apart you might as well put in the XenoGC.
      That said, I think GC Loader is your best option if your laser is starting to fail.
      Once everything is updated and made compatible I may get one - by that time they may also be cheaper and manufactured versions (rather than 3d printed fittings) may exist - just like what happened with the Carby / Kaico.

    Excellent video. What's the issue with 7-zip? No cost to download (free as in cash), open license (LGPL), lzma2 compression and available on just about any platform. Ssome older homebrew or emulators may only read into zip archives but you can also extract and re-zip with 7-zip as well. On embedded systems with a limited CPU you might use zip to avoid taxing the system or using more memory.

    This was an extremely informative video and I am in the same spot you were in when you started this journey. I'm looking for a way where I can play GameBoy and GameBoy Advanced Games on my Gamecube using the GameBoy Player but without the disc. Even after watching this video (which helped a lot with understanding things) I'm not 100% confident in my ability.
    If I wanted to play GBA games using the GameBoy Player without the disc, is there a way I can do that using the memory slot on the GameCube? I know I can do it if I have another game like Wind Waker but due to a fire all I have is Crash Tag Team and NHL 07 so thats not an option for me and GC games are pricey right now :P

      If you just want gbi and nothing else, you can buy memory cards on ebay that are preloaded with save exploits and the GBI software so all you need to do is plug the memory card into slot a and insert a game disc from a list of compatible gamecube games that would be included in the listing. When the gamecube tries to load the hacked save it will instead boot into GBI.

      The only other option is the GC Loader, which will run you about $90+shipping and you'll never need the laser again.
      Interestingly, the GC Loader is a Xilinx chip just like the Carby, but uses an SD card slot to emulate the DVD drive.

      @@rainerquintela9125 The NES/SNES/etc emulators are pretty old and not always updated with the latest Homebrew methods. I'd suggest using a 2gb card in the SD gecko, freshly formatted (no deleted files), and making sure that all of the folders for game saves, etc are created ahead of time. Worse, some of them are partially updated and you have to pick a version that supports either the Gecko or SD2SP2.
      I'd say search through the Github issues for Snex9xGX and open a new one to ask your question there if you don't find an answer.

      Point 1: The GameCube doesn't have an Operating System. The entire software aside from the IPL (the boot loader) lives on the game DVD.
      Therefore, you can't hack the OS to rewrite gamesaves to the SD card because there is no OS to hack. The game contains the software that writes to the card, directly on the DVD / ISO.
      To get around this, each game would individually have to be hacked to write to the SD card.

    • @coolaj86
      @coolaj86  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. No hacks will ruin a disc. This is not physically possible AFAIK.
      2. For Game Save hacks Swiss is directly on the Game Card. It does NOT load from SD. Once Swiss is loaded it can read from either the SD Gecko or the SD2SP2 just fine.
      3. You can use GCMM exactly as demonstrated in the video for creating a backup card, but load GBI instead of loading Swiss. Then you can boot directly to GBI without Swiss.
      4. SD2SP2 has nothing to do with modded or unmodded. It's an accessory just like a controller or memory card or network adapter. If you can load Swiss - by any means - then you can use the SD2SP2.
      5. You can think of all of the Memory Card and Serial Port slots on a GameCube much like modern day USB. You can plug anything into any of them, it's up to the software (on the game disc, or Swiss, or other homebrew) to decide what to do with them. Unless a game says on the box that you're supposed to plug something into SP2 to play it, then it will ignore SP2. However, I don't think that they ever created a game that actually used SP2, which is why it was removed in the 2nd revision of the GameCube DOL-101.
      Does that help?

    I hope this doesn't sound harsh -- why do you recommend the Datel) Action Replay SD Media Launcher disc even though it is, in your words, "outdated and very slow" - wouldn't buying a card pre-loaded with Swiss just make more sense? Also, that disk is sold out on the CodeJunkie's website.

      This _is_ a few years old - obviously I can't back-edit the video to account for what's happened since - and I do have a video on GameSave Exploits (th-cam.com/video/lUTk3ARrltA/w-d-xo.html), but the reason I prefer the Datel disc is that you can't accidentally format it, and you can use it to make Hacked Game Saves, so it's a win-win.
      Also, the Datel Disc turns out to be just as fast as anything else with the compressed Swiss binaries that came out after the video.

    Which method is best for an DOL-101 model GameCube since it doesn't have the second serial port

    • @coolaj86
      @coolaj86  ปีที่แล้ว

      The serial port SD is just a neat convenience and lets you use both memory slots at all times, but it doesn't really matter. The HDMI port is pretty nice though. I think the simplest method right now is either a hacked game save or the no-solder whole drive replacement.

    it's not necessary to create a memory card if you already have action replay at hand. just put swiss on there, launch it and then replace your small 2GB SD card with a bigger one that holds all of your games.

      Check my kit links. I only recommend Silicon Power and Samsung EVO because they're the most consistent and cheapest. Sandisk used to be a top brand, but they've been riding on their name too long and don't provide as good of a product compared to SP and Samsung.

      Yes, with the caveat that you may need to retweak because you can't really know if your tweak worked or not until you try with the discs that you burn.

    • @coolaj86
      @coolaj86  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not. It's a bit of trial and error due to the variances between consoles. You can find an image of the board and just try small 1/8 or 1/4 turns until the laser is able to read the disc. If you get lucky it'll work without modification. HOWEVER, you MUST have the mod chip to read them. You may prefer GC Loader (no soldering) or the new PicoBoot.

    • @coolaj86

      It's trial and error. You measure the resistance between the test points with a multimeter, turn the dial an eighth of a turn, boot it up and see if it reads burned discs, rinse, repeat.
      You have to turn it just past where it starts working otherwise it will be able to read the start of the disc, but not the end of the disc - or it may only work with some brands of burned discs and not others.
      A good way to test might be to use something like CleanRIP and see if it can read the whole disc or if it errors out.

    Hi, AJ! I just recently purchased a DOL-001 and plan on buying the Game Boy Player, as well as a HDMI converter to connect on my flatscreen.
    I really want to run Game Boy Interface using home brew on my unmodified GameCube so that I can play my collection of GBA, GBC, and GB games as smooth and crisp as possible on my television. I went on the official website to buy a SD Media Launcher US but they are sold out as I’m sure you might be aware of.
    What is the best budget-friendly way I can run home brew on a unmodified DOL-001 in 2021 without the action replay? I was thinking it would with the hacked game save method by using a hacked memory card with Swiss in Slot A and a game like Wind Waker to boot up the program. Would I then need to put a memory card adapter like SD Gecko into Slot B (or install a SD2SP2 ) in order to run Game Boy Interface? Am I over complicated everything? Can you please give some feedback and your recommendation?
    Thank you!

    • @coolaj86

      I’ve done my own test backups, but I’m on a Mac and I couldn’t get the nkit tools to work so I ended up just using publicly available nkit archives rather than creating all of my own from scratch. Since most games only had one edition, there’s almost never any variance between what you have on disc and what’s in the vault.
      Plus it takes longer to create a backup than it does to download one in most cases.
