29:00 Animal Crossing came with a memory card because its save took up 58 blocks of a normal, 59-block memory card. Besides the special sticker, the memory cards in Animal Crossing have a one-block unlock save that prompts Tom Nook to give you some additional goodies.

I thought that one block was used for NES data/saves. Though interestingly, there's code in the game that implies that Nintendo could of sold memory cards with NES games built-in to them, allowing more NES games to be played in Animal Crossing than the ones already in the game itself.

That's crazy, that's a huge save file! All my GC games save to single digit block sizes, aside from NFS Carbon, which takes like 34. I wonder how long it takes to save lol.

Running the games on period correct hardware (a CRT TV) really helps with the looks of games from this era.
The textures and color dithering don't move over to an LCD very nicely, it just looks so much better on an old TV.

Glad to see you giving the GameCube a fair shot. Yeah, the games can be expensive, so I really don’t blame those who resort to emulation. Fortunately, we seem to be getting more and more GameCube games re-released on Switch, so we can finally see what we missed. Now that you’ve unboxed the Dreamcast, Xbox and GameCube does this mean you’re unboxing the PS2 next? Definitely looking forward to that.

You're better off buying a 2nd console and getting a optical drive emulator board so you can play .iso's on an SD card. Alternatively you can also use a Swiss memory card and put .iso's on an sd card to gamecube memory card adapter.
There's also the 1st gen wii's that you can soft mod with Nintendont and play games off a usb connected HDD.
I wouldn't buy Gamecube games in this current market the prices are too high because of speculative investors and I'd rather have the greedy investors and resellers get stuck holding their bag.

@@oOignignoktOo1 You can play gamecube games all the way up to the Wii U if you so desire; Although 1st gen Wiis are the only consoles that retain the NGC controller/memory card ports, so some of the more esoteric stuff like the GBA transfer cable are only available there or via PC emulation..

I got a purple one at launch, and perhaps "played it loud" too much because that one burned out in 3 years and then I bought one of these platinum ones at target for 99.99 to replace it. I didn't know how to mess with the laser potentiometer at the time. A year after that, I mod chipped it with a Q00b pro and to this day that console is still in service and can play ANYTHING. The internet is a good teacher.

I believe you might find it difficult to locate original component cables. I still have a multi adapter cable that has composite and S-video with the other end for Gamecube, XBox, and Playstation consoles at the time. Still works and I keep just in case. It looks like you have the version with the digital output, because I believe later revisions removed it. The square hole in the game box is the "hole" Blockbuster used for the yellow locking mechanism that slide inside the side of the case. Working there, it was easy to get fast unlocking or securing a crap load of rentals/returns. That was a great and fun video! 😊

You absolutely need to pick up Eternal Darkness if you can get it for a good price. And Viewtiful Joe.
And look out for an Action Replay or Gameshark as an oddware type thing (disc and custom memory card). I think the GameCube had the last one which actually ran on the system and modified the running game, instead of being a device to import hacked save data. Freeloader was another thing from Datel, for playing imports, though this was built in to the AR/GS as well.
Also, the official memory cards were grey (same colour as the front port surround) for the 59 block one and black for the 251 block cards.

I'd never seen those Japanese size cases before. I think they should've stuck to them for US. It would've helped retailers by taking up less space, and would've stood out to consumers for being different.

    • @julealgon
      @julealgon 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That's not really how it works in the US. Especially during this time, size was everything. People associate it with power. Their decision to use DVD cases instead of the smaller Japanese cases probably helped sales, even though the console was already doomed by its color and shape.

    • @BloodWraith777

"No no, make the NES cartridge hull over twice the size of the actual board, because them landfills won't pollute themselves with excess plastic. Also to make it look more like a VHS tape, because we reaaaaally don't want to be associated with the game crash. No, really, it's just a bizarro VHS player that plays games, lol." -Nintendo
But seriously, all game cases should be like, old PC/PS1 jewel case size, but made out of tougher plastic. So probably like a OG Nintendo DS game case (not the hollower and flimsier 3DS cases), but slightly bigger, and holds a disc instead of a cartridge. Even the Switch game cases should be made like 40% smaller (and 40% tougher).

8:25 about the GameCube triggers... they were odd ones. They were analog from the very beginning, with a sort of digital end-stop with that weird click you feel at the end of travel. Basically, game devs could map the analog travel of the trigger to one function and then have the end stop mapped to something else. If I remember right, Eternal Darkness and Smash Bros Melee used that function pretty well. Basically, Eternal Darkness used the triggers for targeting different parts of enemies' anatomy, and pressing the trigger all the way to the end really locked you in on a target. And in Melee, the triggers were for block/shield, where a moderate press of the trigger would put up a pretty mild block/shield that would only block pretty mild attacks, whereas going full-lock would protect you against just about anything but risk having your shield broken which would stun you.

I was obsessed with owning consoles as a kid and opted to save up any birthday and Christmas money I could get and buy more consoles (usually renting games primarily and just owning a handful). So I had Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox and GameCube during their heyday, even starting to have some more income to buy more games for all of them, and GC may have been my favourite. I was 13 in 2001. It mainly comes down to Nintendo's first party output I suppose, but watching this I'm seeing all the little things about it that were charming to me. You can push a button to release discs from the console! It's right in the middle. No need to pry them out.
I remember just sitting with my GC and inspecting it sometimes, taking the little nameplate off and opening up all the compartments. I was obsessed with that thing.

lol - trying to remember the things I was going to comment as you were walking through this. #1 is that the RTC uses a coin cell battery that should be serviced at this point, but thankfully nothing explodey. #2 is that the discs are proprietary but also /kind of/ in a good way - they're CAV instead of CLE which means they're formatted more like a computer disk drive with sectors. That trades off density for faster seeks. #3 is that the shoulder buttons are full analog with an additional button at the end - they are literally two separate mechanisms inside the controller. #4 it's a great system and there are some real gems. I hope you have a blast with it.

Some of the most beautiful titles ever released (like Resi 4) were ported with *_worse_* graphics to other consoles, and others (like Tales of Symphonia) were lost to time until being re-issued on Switch. And don't forget the Wii was internally a GameCube on steroids! And modern Mario Kart is still based on the new game model introduced in Double-Dash on the Cube. It was a graphically groundbreaking system.

Have had all three, I still have a couple GameCubes, sold and repurchased a PS2, and had the X-Box for a month and traded it in for a GBA SP long-long ago... still have the SP.

looks a lot like a gameboy advance SP - I had a GBA in this color, and every time Clint turns the gamecube over, it reminds me exactly of my old gameboy.

Still having the fresh memory of how my siblings mistreated my n64 and its controllers in my mind, I ordered two GC bundles with mario kart, one for me and one for them. Yes I was older and bought it near its demise, but, mine is still pristine today, not so much the other one... I can really only remember playing smash.

I remember my mom taking me to Walmart so I could buy one with my own money that I had been saving since I heard it was coming out. We got the purple one right at midnight when they went on sale. I had just turned 15 so I'm sure it was a lot of birthday cash.

I can relate to gamers that get their hands on a console no one else where live even heard of, then having to get rid of it because of not being able to find games for that system where they live, for me it was a Sega Dream Cast.

I never actually owned one of these. But I remember playing on one at the 2001 E3 I attended. They had Luigi's Manion and I took home a foam gba and game cube. Heh. I remember telling my little brother I had gotten him a game cube and handed him the foam one. :D. My brother did end up owning a real one before too long, so I ended up playing through Super Mario Sunshine and a few others on his system.

    GameCube has aged like fine wine & I never owned one! I was a PS2/Xbox 360 kid and GameCubes always seemed underpowered at the time;
looking back and realizing the games make or break the console makes me realize GameCube will stand the test of time with one of the best gaming libraries available for kids and some adults.

I actually passed up a PS2 at first in favor of a Gamecube because I was so impressed with my neighbours N64 compared to my PS1. I eventually moved over to PS2 when stores stopped supporting the Gamecube, but I'll always love it. Glad you found some love for it as well.🤣

The menu music is actually a severely slowed down version of the boot music that plays on the famicom disk system. I learned that from did you know gaming, lol. The gc is one of my all-time fave consoles. If I was forced to choose a console of that gen, I would begrudgingly pick the ps2purely for the quantity and quality of games, plus that dvd player really helped. But i would really miss not being able to play gc games as I can't remeber ever owning a bad one

You know it really does astound me at just how well the GameCube has held up over all these years. The thing is over 20 years old, and playing on a CRT, it really does look great, graphically, even today. I don't think there's a single thing that came out on the GameCube (first-party wise, anyway) that I could definitely say just looked "ugly."

I'd love to see a retrospective of the Rogue Squadron games...
When I was a kid, I had the Rogue Squadron demo on my computer and played it religiously for months. Just the demo. (god, I miss the days of ungodly amounts of PC demos) My father ended up buying me the CD-ROM for Christmas. He never really paid attention to video games or technology so it was a really cool surprise.

I had a Gamecube but my ex took it in the divorce...even though she didn't really want it, she just didn't want me having it. But I kept MY games lol...which I eventually sold. It was a good system, I loved it for the short period I had it (less than 1 year). I wonder what she ended up doing with it...
Oh and you're not wrong about the console being good for "party games", that's the main reason my ex and I got it, because we were always hosting hang outs there every weekend. The system had 4 joystick ports and a ton of fun party games. Mario Kart, Mario Party and Warioware were our favorites at the time. So I do have a lot of fond memories of it...until the divorce :P

I have fond memories of this console. I had just moved into a place with my girlfriend, and for my birthday, she bought me an Indigo GameCube with the GBA Player, and Super Mario Sunshine. I would spend Saturdays playing it until she would get home from work, then we would hang out together. She talked about that for years, how she would open the door and I would be there, curled up on the couch, relaxed, and happy to see her. It was one of her favorite things.

I’ve never been much of a gamer and never owned a console of my own. That said, I have lots of good memories playing GameCube games with my brother and occasionally with his gamer friends. It was the last console he owned before we both moved out and went our separate ways. Smash Brothers, Mario Party and Mario Cart were excellent games that were tons of fun, even for teenagers and even without a ton of violence and mature ratings like the most popular PS and Xbox games. I have nothing against reasonable game violence, but it isn’t necessary to have fun.
“Scanning Mario’s dick” is not a phrase I ever thought I’d hear.

If you're getting told to set the calendar every time you turn it on, the internal RTC battery has died.
Had I not known this was in production ahead of time, I could have lent you some games for you to demo on there, along with a Memory Card with my saves.

Insurrection industries has a very solid component cable that is on the same level as the oem. It wasnt untill a few years ago that it was even possible to make third party cables because of something locking others out that smart ass people reverse engineered. Thank god for the retro community.
