2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Test Drive Video Review

  • The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport represents a modern rare sweet spot today’s car buying world. You get: a fun and entertaining car to drive, room for 5 passengers, plenty of cargo space, good gas mileage, and a price under $22k. No other car on the market offers checks this many boxes.
The Honda Civic has been around since the early 1970’s and with the release of the current 10th generation model we get some unique changes both inside and out. The model seen here is the 5-door hatchback model in Sport Trim which has a base price of $21,300. The design is very polarizing and most either love it or hate it. Up front the lower fascia and black trim give the Civic an aggressive look. The 18-inch aluminum wheels look good in gloss black. Out back things get a little busy with the dual spoiler (one on the roof and the other on the hatch), dual center exhaust, and lower lip spoiler kit.
Under the hood is a 1.5 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder Earth Dreams engine that makes 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. There are 2 transmission choices: a CVT and a 6-speed manual which is seen here. Fuel Economy checks in at 30 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway.

I have been a Toyota guy for more than 20 years. They just last and last and leave my mechanic lonely. I recently just gave my 2006 Toyota Camry SE V6 (130K) to my daughter and was in the market for a 2018 Camry SE, which I test drove and love. One day on my way to work i saw someone driving the Civic Sport (same color as the video) and it peaked my interest. Researching led me to the Civic Si, and after test driving and comparing to the Camry, the $2500 cheaper price and 6 speed manual sold me, and after some negotiation, I came out the door $22K minus tax and license. The car is fast, and a pleasure to drive. It begs you to go hard on it, and the harder you go the more it rewards you. Cars for me are just to get from point A to B comfortably, but this car I just love to drive!

For the price, the combination of handling, acceleration, reliability, MPGs, at this price, can't be beat. A daily driver that is fun to drive.

Review is spot on. I have a civic sport 6 speed manual for two years now and still love it. No issues apart from a front sensor replacement, which was fairly cheap. Its like every Honda, you need to let it rev and it goes really nice, it is a light car considering the size. It does have a small turbo lag but where it actually excels is driving on a highway in 6th gear. No need to shift down or anything like that, just press the gas and the car goes surprisingly fast. It is electronically blocked to 230 kmh and it is great ratio of comfort, space, economy and fun. It also comes with almost all bells and whistles like cruise control, honda sensing etc.

This cars 180 hp engine is very quick and it really does pull well. It is more than fast enough for a commuter car, which is what this is. As long as your expectations are below the entry level performance car level (SI, GTI, etc.), then this car is more than quick enough. Does it have enough of a fun factor and enough personality (outside of the exterior design) ? Only you can decide that, as a test driver and/or owner.

I have the 2018 in Black but a pain to keep clean here in the UK. Excellent car to drive as it's mapped to 240 bhp more than enough power. Having it mapped out I don't get any blank spots in the little turbo, as for a first time drivers car I wouldn't recommend it as it as to many blind spots via the rear view and rear offside rightside.

There is one thing I don't like about it and that is the fabric of the cloth of the seats. It reminds me of the inside of Nike running shoes... The sort of shoes that always makes me wonder why so many woman think it's a good idea to not wear socks in them, in the summer, when it's 30°C outside...
It's the only thing I can think of everytime I take a seat and it is ruing it!
Black leather is ofcoure the solution, now just wait till Honda finally wants to combine the twin exhaust pipes (that is sooo cool) with the nice leather in Europe, they already do it in the US I have seen in some videos. Bring the good stuff to us, I know you build them in Britain!

I have been looking at the Elantra GT sport and civic hatch my self. I am only in the looking phase now so I have been comparing the pros and cons.
GT Pros : has more power / interior / warranty and leather seats at a cheaper price point.
cons : kinda blah exterior and rims, MPG is more like a SUV from what I can find so far

    • @TVinmyEye

john smith i have an Elantra Gt sport with the DCT and ive been getting 29 mpg combined City and Hwy which isnt too bad. The stick GT Sport is pretty bad tho. Styling wise I personally love the subdued look, it reminds me alot of the discontinued 2013 Audi A3. Plus the stock exhaust on the Gt Sport sounds absolutely incredible, it definitely surprises a lot of people.
