Yarn Review: Has my favorite Acrylic Yarn Gone Bust?!?

One of my most popular videos was an epic review on economical Acrylic yarn. I ranked Joann Craft Big Twist as my number one choice. But, that was four years ago. Does my favorite Acrylic Yarn still hold up? Or has the quality gone down?

YES!!! I am so glad I'm not crazy! I noticed incredible differences too from my skeins I impulse-bought 2 years ago versus 2 months ago.

When I need a worsted weight acrylic yarn I like Bernat Premium. It's similar to RHSS, but not scratchy

Oh, bummer. I've noticed changes in quality for other yarns I liked in the past, too. I dont shop much for store bought yarn as much now that I spin, and when I have looked, I felt like they weren't as great as i remembered. But I could've also been biased now because of having more experience with other fibers. I'm relieved to hear it's not just me, but disappointed that another yarn isn't all that it used to be. Thanks for sharing the changes with us all. ❤🐻

I am not all that familiar with Big Twist... what I came across in Joanne's I was not very pleased with. I am a yarn snob due to what some yarns do to my hands. My hands get all red and get in hives. I have found that I can knit with Super Wash Merino and Cotton Acrylic blends. They no longer carry my favorite cotton acrylic yarn so I have been on the hunt for a new yarn to use in kids projects. I came across I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby and I think it's a winner in that category. Give it a try - I think you might be surprised. I will say though that my all time favorite yarn comes from the Fiber Seed. The twist, the feel and the stitch definition is off the charts and it is not ridiculously expensive. My other go to is Malabrigo Rios. That's my story... Happy Knitting! SasZ

I wonder if they make all of the yarn at the same facility or if there are different factories? Could explain the quality differences.
Also, my 2021 temperature blanket that went into hiatus in April '21 would like a word 😂😂😂. It was just starting to get interesting...

It's a possibility, but I suspect that JoAnn switched mills for their Big Twist value yarn.

I’m from Canada, no Joann’s here. I never ever liked the look of Red Heart yarns, instead I went with Michaels Loops and Threads Impeccable. These days I use more natural fibres but I think that’s a good one.

People need to stop being so judgy. As you said, acrylic yarn has a place and is very popular for reasons. If people like it, good for them.

What is your favorite? I think yrs ago heard someone say they liked paintbox yarn. Maybe that was you can’t remember. Sadly I think a lot of Co.s are cutting costs with the economy. Judy

Big Twist value was my favorite. So I'm now on the search for a new one. I'll have to try Paintbox. I really like Caron Simply Soft but it has drawbacks: it's splitty and does pill easily.
