CARRIE CRAFTGEEK PODCAST: CLASHING OVER CONTINENTAL VERSUS ENGLISH STYLE KNITTING
#knitting
It seems in the knitting world there's always some debate over continental versus english style knitting. It seems some want just want feel they are knitting the best way. Am I one of those people? Some seem to think so. Well I want to clear the air about where I stand on English vs Continental style knitting.

    Thank you for your very informative videos about Lever knitting. As a Continental knitter looking for a better way to purl, this method is fantastic for uniformity of stitiches and preventing hand pain. Thank you, thank you!!

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Assuming this is a plied yarn, i love a braided or clasped join for this. I've been using clasped joins for a tshirt I'm knitting with LB Caboo which is a similar blend and is working great. (I have a video on clasp join which is becoming my go to. ) Braided join might need to be as long as 6-8 inches to hold. Neither requires yarn to stay twisted nor felting to keep secure. In an absolute pinch, might consider a magic knit if there were no other option or it's a homegood item.

    Yes, your mileage may vary. But my floors are not clean enough to do this, so I use a wastepaper basket, or small garbage can, or a cleàn box.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My yarn is usually in a box or bag on the floor if for no other reason that it's a law of knitting physics that unconfined yarn will roll under the couch.

  • @pamelasertich9850
    @pamelasertich9850 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Well I have been knitting for over 65 years and the only time my yarn is on the floor is when it falls off the couch or chair where I am knitting. Having it down lower makes the tension tighter, IMO

    Wow. Thank you. My mom knitted this way before she passed. It was mesmerizing to watch, and I never knew what it was called. She made me a worsted COTTON scarf, 500 yards, complete with checkerboard and cables in all of less than two hours. You’re the second person I’ve ever seen who does this. Where did you learn this?

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow your mom was fast. I learned from poking around on the internet. I had hear about lever knitting and lived it together from watching a video from a woman who took Yarn Harlot's class on Irish Cottage Knitting and a video of Yarn Harlot at a convention. There weren't any good videos at the time so I made my own so others could see it better.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It depends on the fiber to a large degree so I usually look to the ball band. If I'm unsure I tend toward lukewarm so if I put my hand in the water it's not cold but just a little bit warm. And if Im concerned about bleeding I'll use cool water. Cool or cold water is always safe.

    When I first started learning to knit, there weren't a lot of online resources yet, and I was mostly learning from my roommate at the time. Well... I dropped the hobby after she threw a hammer at me, and I moved out. It just reminded me too much of that time of my life, and, even though I kept my needles, I wasn't ready to pick it back up for the longest time. This year, I picked it back up and had to relearn everything--not that I had learned a lot when I dropped the hobby. The first project I chose was probably not one that most people would recommend as a first project--it had cables, increases, and passing stitches onto a stitch holder to make the thumbs later. Maybe it's because I had more crochet experience under my belt than that first time and a better feel for tension, but I knew I could figure it out, because I had done it before with teaching myself crochet. I'm now starting on my second project--it also is not a simple project--, but I'm writing this to say that I absolutely agree with the sentiment that you should learn to knit with patterns you are excited about knitting. I personally find it much easier to look up things as I go rather than knitting something simpler just to learn 1 or 2 techniques at a time.

    Thank you for this explanation. I now understand that I knit English lever style. It was how I was taught by my mother. I actually wrap the thread with my index finger, so the movement is smaller than how I see your movement. I tension by running thread over my ring finger.

    I knit exactly like you are at 4:45. Until a few months ago I didn't even have a style, I just kind of held it in my hands, let go of the needles to put the yarn, then picked them back up lol. When I heard of english and continental, I googled to see what they are and tried different ways of holding the needles and yarn. I was able to pick up english style pretty quickly and I work so much faster now! But literally every time I try continental my brain simply breaks and refuses to comply lol!!

  • @aprils.
    @aprils. 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Okay, so I just left a comment on the previous video 😂 but now that I’m watching this one, I think the only discernible difference between how I knit and Lever style is that I still technically throw my yarn. If I can get used to tensioning it in my fingers, I guess that’s the only change I need to make. I had no idea!

  • @aprils.
    @aprils. 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I’m left handed and learned how to knit English style in the typical right handed way. The way my knitting naturally evolved is a strange combination of English and Lever, I suppose. I still hold my right needle as in English style, BUT I actually end up working my left needle very much like Lever style, and I push my needle tips a lot. So I don’t know what to call it, other than mine 😂

    I'm an English-style knife grip lever knitter (try saying that 3 times fast lol). I have been told by countless people that I could knit faster if I switched to continental. My answer has made each and every one of them sputter: "Why is the goal to knit faster? I'm not a knitting Olympics athlete or something. Let me enjoy my stitches."

    I'm a continental knitter (that is how learned) but after over 40 years of knitting I tried many different methods. English, Portuguese (one of my favs),armpit knitting, and soon i hope to try belt knitting. I believe changing up your style and alternating between different fiber crafts helps prevent injuries.

    I'm left handed and was taught by another left handed knitter and I knit "weird " compared to everyone. I finally worked out that I knit english with thrown stitches. . And after I stand on my head to read a pattern, I reckon that if I can produce a garment that will not fall apart after the first wash it's a win.

    I learned English style cuz it was easiest for me. I now know how to knit Continental and I use it occasionally. I have tried armpit knitting and belt knitting. I also like Portuguese knitting too. I think belt knitting is prolly the fastest. If you work at it. However at the end of the day, I just want to enjoy my craft and have nice result. Its a tactile craft, not a speed craft for me. I found your channel a couple of years ago and you were having this discussion then . I saved that vid to a playlist and watch it now and then to uplift me. Love your channel and your take on process. Eat,pray,knit (the way you like) and love

    I learned to knit about 3 years ago at the age of 62 (being a crocheter all my life) and I learned to knit in the English style from a set of videos on Craftsy. I love knitting, and my goal is not to be the fastest knitter. My goal is to enjoy knitting, to keep knitting as my happy place, and to make beautiful objects. I will probably never switch to continental. I’ve tried it and I don’t like it. So I find no reason to switch. People need to relax and allow each of us to knit in whatever way we find most enjoyable.

  • @kirsten07734
    @kirsten07734 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I am fluent in English, continental and other forms of knitting. I’m primarily a continental knitter in large part because I learned it first and it is (therefore?) most comfortable for me. I teach whatever form makes my student most comfortable because bottom line my goal is to get them loving a craft I love. FWIW the fastest knitter on record right now (Hazel Tindall) happens to be an English style knitter. So there’s that. Is fast knitting the highest goal? No. Happy knitting is. Is continental most ergonomic for everyone? No. Combination is most ergonomic for most able bodied knitters who master it in my own experience. It is for me and yet it is not my default. Is ergonomics the most important criteria? No. Whatever makes the craft enjoyable for the individual knitter is key. That might be the feel of the yarn slipping through the fingers, the needles in the hand, the project-there are at least a dozen criteria that affect enjoyment of knitting and ergonomics is only one. People need to stop basing their own happiness on forcing others into their view at the cost of the others’ happiness. Knit happy and carry on. This channel makes me happy. Thank you!

    I've been knitting as long as Carrie. I'm a leftie and taught myself to knit using a pamphlet that spoke to both handed knitter; therefore, I hold my yarn in my left hand, but "throw" it à la English knitting and come at patterns from the opposite direction. I love fair isle knitting, however which means when I'm working on a fair isle project with two colors, I knit English style with my left hand and Continental with my right hand. But my right hand always has tighter tension, and honestly, it goes slower, simply because I've knitted English for much longer. But truly, who cares how someone knits, as long as their stitches are accurate, they can read a pattern, and they come out with a finished, working project at the end of it?!

  • @Anita-bg9mz
    @Anita-bg9mz 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Ive experienced double bias as a left-handed english style knitter. Others try and convince me to knit right-handed. I've also have heard the comments about knitting faster as continental but I'm happy with my way as i have good tension, better ergonomics, purling is easy and i enjoy the process. Knitting smarter not harder 😊

      I can see that. Though I think when first learning having more than two inches of needle to hold onto is more comfortable. 😀. For socks I like using two 26 inch circular needles.

    Hello: if you are reading this pinned comment, it is near the end of 2024. Warning: I mispronounce Chiaogoo through the video. I now know how to pronounce the brand name. Unfortunately I was unaware until two years ago - after I filmed this - that I was mistaken for so long. Thank you to the people who kindly informed me.

    Where do you get your needles? Longish double pointed ones to use with the belt?

      Yes. For the socks I'm using 8 inch which I got from Jimmy Beans. BobnWeave on Etsy has even longer, metal DPN. See my pinned comment for the link (note it's an affiliate link)

    If you would like your own knitting belt or to source long DPN's, I purchased mine from BobnWeave on Etsy. This is a true small business making hand made knitting belts. tidd.ly/3ZbGTqf. (As an Etsy affiliate I earn on qualifying purchases. Thank you for your support)

    I have one too! Bought it after my Italian mother wouldn’t stop going on about how crazy my armpit knitting style was. She used a knitting sheath growing up. Same idea just cheaper because it was made of wood.
