Raped and murdered truly horrendous and the scumbag never spend a single day behind bars for it
There can be no closure for any person who has lost a loved one. When you love someone, you give a piece of your heart to them. When they pass, you are left with a hole in your heart that only they can fill. RIP Arliss.
I don't 100% agree. I have closure for the deaths that I have dealt with. My best friend drowned at 19 at a party with friends, and it took many years and lots of working through that trauma, but I have closure with the fact that he is now at rest and has peace. Also, my mom died pretty young from cancer, and my dad just quit living after. He killed himself 5 years later. I feel I have closure with those losses as well as they are together now in death, and the pain is no more. I don't struggle with the why's anymore. The grief is different and still there because I miss and love them, but there is closure.
@@estellar8186 tell us more when ( God forbid),u loose someone unexpectedly to murder. Hopefully u never find out
Now that I’ve realized it I’ve been in plenty of situations where I could’ve been killed due to cussing out bullies and calling the police on assholes , I’m glad I was spared
Self-insert.

Way to make this about you and your nonexistent tragedy.
@@bradsanders407 don’t care
I understand when there have been many times watching these tragic stories as an adult and realizing in retrospect how many times I put myself in unsafe situations when I was younger. This poor girl. Heartbreaking. 😢
What a horrible story. Poor girl.
It wouldn't be entirely accurate (but also not entirely wrong) to say they obtained a DNA sample in the 70s. A DNA sample is what they got, but the sample would have been intended for a blood type test. DNA was not used in court until 1986 and still wasn't used often for many years because it was too costly to test, too difficult to explain to a jury, and needed uniform procedures to be developed. We take it for granted now, but it was a really big deal in the late 90s to start using it for exonerations. It really surged into the spotlight and became a more household term through Dolly the sheep, the OJ case, and Jurassic Park. The first genetic fingerprint was mapped in 1984, and even into the late 80s was rarely used in court other than establishing paternity in contested cases (and only for those who could afford it, which is why so many clamored to get on TV shows willing to foot the bill. We poked even more fun at that back then than we do now. The Human Genome Project began in '90 and took 13 years to complete.
I used to work at a store down the road from the Del Coronado apartments. The day the police went to arrest Crawford the apartment manager came by and told us that he was the last person to see Crawford alive. He had the police wait at the front desk and told him they were there to question him.
Crazy! He used to be my neighbor . I used to live in the del Coronado apartments .
I hate to say it but she was probably a victim of opportunity. I don't imagine many young women go at night to pray at the church.
Agreed. Believing in satan and devil worshippers is a lot less scary than knowing monsters are really just other people.
@@LillibitOfHere
Yep. Evil looks like everyone else.
I don’t like the widely used term, “closure “. Identifying a perpetrator only answers “who”. The book never closes.
It does not, I like to say “the families got some answers”instead.
No matter how people die, you never ever get closure .
I still cry when I talk about my dad who died suddenly when I was nine.. no closure, still just pain and more questions😢
Exactly there is no closure at all
I understand what you all are saying, closure is used to readily, but finding the perpetrator is an end or closure. I agree that it never truly ends for a family and the “whys and what ifs” never stop. I am not sure what word or phrase would fit best but I do like your idea of getting some of the answers.
I don’t think there is much of a “why”, unfortunately. The “why” is that he was a beast and took an opportunity. Most murderers aren’t really that interesting. I think the families want to wring out of them how they could do this to their loved one and the answer is simply that the killer doesn’t care who the victim is, who loves them, or how much life they should have ahead of them-he just wants what he wants. But that’s not a very satisfying answer.
Unfortunately, even in cases with 'closure', the answer of why someone committed a murder is simply 'they are a bad person'.
Cant imagine being so irrationally angry about low tire pressure. Life was much simpler back then I guess.
Read: The Ultimate Evil by Maury Terry. The DNA of the security guard was found on the pew. There was other DNA, not tied to the guard, found other places. The guard didn’t do it alone…
I read it years ago. It was so fascinating.
The Ultimate Evil mentions nothing about DNA. And besides, it's a work of fiction. Total garbage.
I can only imagine the possible guilt that her husband still carries for the petty argument that led her to go pray at the church.
Sadly, every action one takes is decided of their own volition… taking on someone else’s decision(s) assumes one knows fully why someone else “did what they did”… it’s toxic in thought at very least
After it being so long to finally find out the killer I wonder if he had anymore victims. Thats a brutal escalation of crime and to only do it once and get away with it I would assume is pretty rare. Id be surprised if thats the only rape or murder he committed in his lifetime. Such a horrific story.
So sad that the killer got away with the murder he took the easy way out in the end and never faced justice, not in this world anyway RIP Arlis Perry thank you DC 👏👏💜
‘Not in this life’ very true!
Such a tragic story.
What makes the resolution of the case very interesting is the fact that the DNA of the murderer was initially tested and it didn't matched, but then they made the test again years later and came out as a match. That makes me wonder if there are simillar situations with other unsolved cases.
This remains one of the most haunting cases from California, so disturbing on so many levels. It still gives me the creeps. That poor girl.
I do wonder if Berkowitz was one of the first infamous Incells!
I was familiar with the case, but I had no idea it was solved.
Realising where I'd heard the name and scenario from before made me want to go binge the Netflix series again...
Even if he weaseled his way out of facing true punishment for his crimes, I'm glad they at least found out who the killer was. I feel like the answer of why, in cases where they even get one, never really justifies an innocent life being taken, but revealing the monsters who commit these crimes at least provides clarity. And whether they're locked away to rot or they take themselves out, at least we know they'll hopefully never see the outside to hurt anyone again.
I went down this rabbit hole many years ago. Its disturbing and quite fascinating beyond the sadness and heartbreak of the families and the fear of the poor victims. They've recently interviewed Berkowitz in prison and it's quite startling. He's become a Christian tho Idk if it's another sect or what exactly. I hope Arliss and her Dad are together somewhere and her Mom gets what she needs. Sounds like Crawford belonged to some sort of....group as well. Thank you DC🙏💔🕊️🦌
What a terribly sad case. I feel it for the family as they never got justice as that was taken away from them. Another well researched case DC.
My goodness what a horrific tragedy.
The perp, an absolutely disgusting monster.
Arlis going to stay with me for a very long time.
Thank you for sharing her story with us.
Thank you DC for another exceptional episode. RIP Arlis Perry
RIP, Arlis 😭
Far out! Poor girl! This guy enjoyed 40 years freedom…😡 thank god for DNA
5:08 That’s a picture of an ice axe; not an ice pick. Big difference!
I lived in San Jose during the 70s I don’t remember hearing of this I thought for sure the husband of done it but I was wrong
I didn’t know this had been solved! I heard about it years ago from someone my mom used to know, who was at Stanford and the same time, although she didn’t know the Perrys.
I remember when this went down.
RIP!
What of the david berkowitz connection:" arliss perry- hunted, stalked and slain in california."?
Closure is such a myth! It’s a very unreal term. I am trained in many therapeutic methods. An always cringe when I hear that word tbh! It has a massive suggestion that something ends - anything we have been through can come back an sweep our feet at any time because of unforeseen triggers occurring. Finding answers brings some answers and maybe this brings some peace but closure has no presence in most cases - just sounds dismissive to me.
😢😢😢
The last thing he said to his wife was arguing over tire pressure…
Is that important?
@@eadweard.Yes - a ' heated ' argument over tire pressure ? why was it her job to check it ? SHE has to work to support HIM thru school - classic set-up - the way they did it back then - then, he's got all the education, career & money & power - and she could be dropped by divorce at any time - see - the Broderick case ...
@@lisasmith5422 never have a relationship before? Sometime people lose their cool over trivial stuff. Doesn't make them bad people. And there's no reason to bring up betty broderick. Chill
@@meghanphillips3495 who said they were bad people ? but, he was bitching at his newlywed bride about a job he should've done while she was being set up to support his future while leaving herself dependent on him - no signs of narcissism there 🙄
and he sure snapped back pretty quick & strong - they didn't mention him having any issues - just zoomed along on his career path - probably right after marrying another lady who'd support him - forbid he support himself
Must gave a lot of guilt
Unlike some people, I wouldn't say that the killer "got away with it": he's dead as a doornail and can't hurt anyone else, and that's all that matters now. He also died in fear, knowing that he'd been caught and was screwed, and that's satisfaction enough. In fact, I may honestly prefer not having to dirty my hands with this guy.
I've heard of this case but I hadn't heard about identifying the murderer. What a sicko!

RIP
She had a lovely smile R.I.P
RIP arils.
I have heard about Arlis's murder before. But this is the 1st time i had heard about what caused her & her hubs Bruce to argue. Tire pressure? I'm sorry, but getting upset enough over low tire pressure, to the point of arguing? Very sad, and Arlis deserved better.
That’s a terrible way to imply that her husband then is partially to blame.
Couples argue about stupid stuff sometimes, that’s not abnormal.
@grantgrandison Right. Absolute nonsense of a statement by brandyjean
Yeah, 19 year old newlyweds never argue about stupid things./s
I'm not an arguer. I wasn't implying that he was responsible in any way. I did Google him & he never remarried, so I'm pretty sure he regrets that petty argument as well.
@brandyjean7015 Your comment was still absolute nonsense implying she deserves better than a simple nonsense argument as if her murder is causation direct
A murderer and a coward.
I would bet anything he was an unfound serial killer and that's a big reason for the self offing.
I still don't buy the official version that states that Crawford did it. It still makes no sense, despite whatever DNA evidence they might have recovered 40 yrs later. They already had DNA evidence from the semen left on the pillow and handprint on the candle used on Arlis and neither matched Crawford's at the time. Why would that suddenly change now? If anything, this fact alone points to a different perpetrator or perpetrators. The police refuses to acknowledge that. It seems to me that Sheriff Smith was just looking for her 15 minutes of fame. They never investigated the existence of a phone listing for a fake Bruce D Perry nor the blonde man who approached Arlis at her work place the day before the murder and who resembled the man that entered the church after her. Nothing adds up in this case. One last thing, why would Crawford just sit still waiting for the cops to show up one day if he was actually guilty? He would've at least moved out of state and tried to change his identity if he was in fact the killer. My guess is that he committed suicide because he thought they were after him to jail him again for the stolen items from Stanford or some other thing (which he didn't want to go to prison for), not murder. THIS IS STILL A COLD CASE TO ME and anyone who has a brain.
Strange case strange story! The day of the murder Oct 12th am I the only one that knows that is Aleister Crowleys birthday?
I didn’t know! Hummmmm…
So? It’s also the day Columbus discovered the Americas, leading him to rejoice at his discovery of India. But every day of the year has some significance in some way. It’s not remarkable, even though it may seem to be.
@matthewgliatto7339 our EC from Les Houches reply is, oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Mrs Arlis is already happy and in love in heaven with all the angels, saints and our Lord Jesus. The vile disgusting evil Crawford is getting way worse than what he did to that angel in hell. The law may get away from you but God wont.
Amen you said it! that is what people forget alot of the time.
Horrible rip
Um, that was a pic of an ice axe - quite different to an ice pick methinks. 😂
Why is it that everyone who is ever murdered is always described as well liked? Surely, throughout time, someone who has been murdered has been hated by most people..
They say the same at funerals
I've said that very same thing many times before. As soon as you die you become a sweet angel that was the life of the party. You really lit up every room you were in... It's almost as if no assholes ever die.
I mean, opportunity of crime exists and I wouldn’t say everyone is described as well liked always although I get it.
There are people who will if given the chance take the opportunity to do harm to someone whether they know em personally or not ya know.
Most people?? I guess you're talking about yourself.
ok and what does that have to do with Arlis?? Jeffery Dahmer was murdered by a cell mate and he wasn't well-liked so there ya go!
tyvm for another interesting history tale upload.
