“How can I help you?” My oldest was going through a trying moment and I asked him that….he burst into tears. Sometimes, a true caring interaction is all we need to get us through.
Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Finally someone who relates to being an introverted homemaker!!! I love my children and caring for our home but many times I think 💭…… Why are you talking to me? Why are you calling me?? I can be so task oriented that I have to remind myself that it’s equally important to serve them without being irritated. Thank you for sharing.
Mmmm hmmm. That’s me to the core. So task oriented that I literally make sure to write, “homeschool, playtime, outside, bath etc” into my daily planner. If I don’t - I find myself being aggravated by these “interruptions.”
I don’t even have kids and I find I have to be careful to not get annoyed by any type of interruptions. It must be very challenging for introverts with small children who never get enough time alone.
Thank you for putting this into words for me. I’m exactly this way. This is definitely a struggle for me too! I huge lightbulb went off for me with this realization. I’m comforted in knowing I’m not the only one who thinks this way. I’m going to work on my “ can I help you face”. ..
Couldn't agree more!!! Marmee is the "lost" character in the readings of this classic masterpiece...but if we turn our eyes to her, we learn sooo much! I can't count the number of women who have claimed to be "Jo"...but I'd rather be Marmee anytime, now that I'm an adult. She is the soul and heart of that home and she creates the space for each of her daughters to blossom and flourish individually. Thanks so much for sharing this and I'm very much looking forward to part 2!
Oh my goodness! I struggle so much with the "can I help you face?!" I am both introverted and highly sensitive to auditory stimulation, so with three rambunctious boys under age 10 I am increasingly struggling to maintain the patience and peaceful look and voice. It is so encouraging to know that I am not alone!
I think it is important to entertain and have guests over semi regularly. Nothing gets me seeing the house with fresh eyes quite like an impending guest visit. My entryway gets decluttered, baseboards get cleaned, the back patio gets swept.
Loved this video! I live here in Concord Massachusetts. Orchard House is less than two miles away and I pass by it often. I have been thinking recently how more and more middle-aged women keep popping up in the news showcasing their latest bikini picture and how they are fighting ageism, etc. While at 50 I want to look great and I love beauty treatments (and videos about beauty treatments!), I feel myself longing often lately to hear about middle-aged women working on strengthening their character and helping to strengthen others through things like hospitality. It just feels so absent from anything you hear in the news. The lessons in Little Women and the Little House books are so great to look to for these things. I have read them many times. Thank you so much for sharing these tips from Little Women--looking forward to part 2.
Because of you I started with The Long Winter and have since read all of the Little House on the Prairie books and loved them. These videos of yours are thoroughly delightful
I love that in spite of all of the devastating hardships that they had to live through they kept the correct focus, not mistakenly blaming God for all their many troubles but taking this world as it is and uncomplainingly walking that new path.
I love that idea of a "Can I help you look", I'm with you on this one Jennifer. Our faces can speak volumes and I could work on improving my expressions.
Yes! My daughter has read this twice and now I want to read it again! Such beautiful takeaways you have shared this far. Cannot wait for part 2. I too am on the reclusive side so homemaking can be a challenge at times, but the Lord has so worked His love in my heart so that I want to keep a cozy home for my family. I do find that taking time to read and be creative really help me to recharge. Oh, how I love your channel! Such a sweet corner of the internet that always leaves me feeling encouraged. Be blessed!
Strange to think that a book written 150 years ago is so full of such positive home making lessons and contagious homemaking sentiment. It makes me sad that the majority of young women today miss out on reading books like this.
This was a lovely vlog. "Little Women" is a lovely book, stretching beyond the miles of time, reminding us of beautiful days gone by. Thinking back, the March family had gone from being a rather affluent family with a variety of servants, to being a modest household, losing much of their standing in the community due to the parents move away from traditions of society into those intellectual Transcendentalists. Just like today, large, more expensive homes were usually built in the same neighborhoods. Lauri's wealthy grandfather, just as the March's mean Auntie, and their more societied friends thought the March Women to be "unfortunate" due to their family's financial loss due to their beloved Father's choices of late. It doesn't surprise me that Marmie, as much as she supported her wonderful husband, might just miss a few of the creature comforts she grew up with and become angry at the many societal injustices she witnesses first hand now aimed at herself and her lovely, sweet daughters.
Thank you for being honest. Sometimes I watch your videos and think to myself how can she be so calm, she must never get angry with her children, she must never yell or be irritated, she must be saintly in her patience. I felt better today knowing that you also struggle with these things and are working on being the more "can I help you" mother Little women is a lovely book, even my 2.5 year old had parts of it memorized because it's almost musical in it's prose. It flows and it's wonderful.
Man oh man, did that hit home. I work from home and homeschool our 6 year old. It's so easy to unintentionally brush him aside, put him off or be more gruff than I intend to be in the deep focus of the day. Often, all he wants is a little attention and then he's back to his work or play. Excellent reminder. I had made a mental note to "pause" my day periodically, 15 minute here or there, a dedicated 30 minutes sitting down together for lunch, etc. Need to get back in the habit of that and remember what's truly important and what can wait - and to greet him with more patience and kindness.
I think I've been subconsciously waiting for this video! Every time I read a classic now, I notice the homemaking content, and wonder if you'll do a video about it! ;)
I love when you analyzed the classics and gave us all those advices. Thank you very much for all your efforts in helping us with our homemaking process.
Thank you for admitting you struggle with helping people all day long. It’s a mom thing and serving others all day long can be hard. Thank you for normalizing that struggle and putting words to it. I feel that often.
Little Women is one of my all-time favorite books. My mother died very young, and I used to read and imagine myself in the March family, wondering if I could ever be as good a mother as Marmee. I love how you've picked up on all these special home-keeping lessons found in this beautiful book! Thank you, Jennifer!
I will be added this book to my booklist for my children's read out loud. I'm a stay-at-home mother and my husband is an active-duty soldier. He will be gone next month and I already have my spa day planned and booked for when he returns. I use to never do things like that for myself however, they are non-negotiable now! I always have something planned that I can look forward to and get a much-needed break. Great video!
I enjoyed this tremendously that I didn't want the video to end! I'm delighted to hear there will be a part 2! This makes me want to read the book and seek out all the rich details of it!
Little Women is one of my favorite books! So beautifully written a true joy to read. I only wish I had read it with my daughter rather than after she read it and recommended it to me! Then go watch the movie version with Susan Sarandon as Marmie and Wynona Ryder as Jo. So precious!
(Melanie here) I love these videos so so much! I love the descriptions of home in books. I actually found you initially when I found your video on homemaking from another book. I love reading classics and homeschooled my kids for 7 years. They are grown now and we all have such fond memories of reading these books together.
The movie (starring Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon...) changed my life. From this day on, I wanted to have four daughters (I was 14 years old, then...). Now I have one and I try my best to be a good mother. Thank you so much for sharing these insights in the book! I am looking forward to part Two :) Greetings across the Miles from Berlin, Germany 👋
I love little house on the prairie tv show. I just discovered it a few months ago, and it is an absolute gem! I’m excited to read the book series with my kids when they are older. Also, thanks for giving us tid-bits about other similar books!
It reminds me of the quote from the book “mother Carey’s chickens”- One real home always makes another”. Out of print, but it is a lovely book that shows true family and home happiness.
Hi Jennifer you are such a joy to watch and listen to. Your honesty is beautiful. I know with God's help you too can possess the "gift of how can I help you?"
Jennifer! I love your channel ❤ Thank you for creating edifying content. I would love a video on your house plants - where you get them/basic care and how you decorate your home with them.
What a lovely look at literature. Thank you for giving your viewers these observations from a good sturdy story. Now I'm thinking it would be good to review Little Women again as part of my winter reading.
I LOVE this so much! The one about a “how can I help you?” look was very convicting to me. I am an introvert and very task oriented. I need to work on this. Thank you! 🤍
Oh....one of my favorite books! I just finished reading "the Wind in the Willows." So delightful to have all those pictures in your mind once more. Of course I picture all the characters in "Little Women" as those in the movie. Jo being my favorite. Thank you. This series is delightful.
There is a mostly animated movie of "Wind in the Willows" that my daughter and I watched several times.. plus we had the books. I haven't found it online to send to her children.. It had Vanessa Redgrave with her grandchildren visiting and she told the story.. they were also out walking on her property in England I believe.
One of my all time favorite books. I’m enjoying it in a fresh way through your eyes. I feel that each person in a family needs his/her own space even if it is a small corner. Marmee’s corner reminds me of the Danish hyggekrog.
Love you, this video, and your channel. Our world would be a much better place if we had more true dignified ladies like you, Ms. Scott! Love and prayers to you and your family at Christmas and always.
Hi Dawn! I am not a naturally tidy person, but I desire to learn. I have tried and failed more times than I can count. I love your videos! Keep them coming; they are helpful and this one was very helpful!!
Hi Jennifer! I love this!! Your book lessons are my favorite videos on your channel! It's so helpful to hear a different perspective, especially using books most of us are very familiar with!! When you read to your girls, do you discuss any of these topics with them? Thank you for reminding me I need to work on my face, haha!!! I can't wait to hear the last seven lessons! Thank you so much!! Love, Kellie
Hi Kellie, sometimes we discuss these things, but I'm always marking up the book with notes. I do that with every book I read, actually. I want them to enjoy the storyline so I don't always interject the observations I have
Of all of Louisa May Alcott books this one is the most biographical. The fact of the matter is her father was a waste of space. One of the reasons Louisa wrote for magazines and papers was so they didn’t starve! Alcott took his transcendental belief to the point he basically abdicated his familial responsibilities. This could be why she wrote Marmee that way. I’m sure her mother was often angry at the fact that often their basic need were not being met.
These are such great points. I love the insight that we do need our own space untouched. We often feel guilty about wanting something that is just ours!
Wonderful, wonderful! Thank you for this series! My dad bought me Little Women and Black Beauty when I was younger! I read them over and over. You have inspired me to read them again as an adult! Thank you! Xoxox
Wow! It’s been so long since I read LW-- these home making lessons were exactly what I needed! I’ve been so intimidated to share our small starter home with anyone but you reminded me that I’m richer than some…and should appreciate what I have in spite of others’ IG-worthy homes. Thank you 😊
This is amazing Jennifer I never thought to have a time off from home and family as well as a space of my own. People clock out from work and go elsewhere, homemakers should too take a true break. Thanks so much for sharing !
Thank you Jennifer for a very interesting video. I couldn’t help but think that it is just like an expository sermon. I really enjoyed it so much. What a great idea to choose to read from Little Women.
It is so true. All the lessons of life have been taught and learned before. As Ecclesiastes 1:9 reminds us, “there is nothing new under the sun.” And that is the richness of literature. When they are ready, your girls must read Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own.
Jennifer, I love this series of videos you do! There are so many lessons to be learned from these classic novels. Now I need to go read Little Women again. :)
I’m so glad you’re making a video about Little Women. I think I’ll plan to reread this book in 2022. I originally read Little Women as an adult after having my first child and would read it aloud as I nursed her. I found myself identifying heavily with Meg and life with children. I don’t remember the details or much about her, just that most people talked about Jo when referring to the book. I wonder if I’ll be more tuned in to Marmie when I read it next now that I have older children. I can’t wait to hear the parenting tips you gleaned from Little Women! ❤️
Little Women is one of my favorite books, I read it at least once a year to inspire me and remind myself that not everyone is perfect, including Marmee. I try to take a day off at least once a month from homemaking. I call it my favorite things day and much like Marmee I take a day and enjoy myself. I treat myself to lunch, watch movies, write letters, and basically do some of my favorite things.
Love this topic Jennifer. You are such a gem with these beautiful well thought out videos. I learn so much from you 🌸. I will try to clean my house now with a better not bitter attitude. Hope you and your family are well and enjoying the season! 🌸💕
Little women (part one and two, in Italy) is my favourite book since I was twelve. I read it every two years and every time I “discover” something new or new views… At January I am going to find all the points you talk about!
Thank you for these delightful videos! I love going through these classics with you and hearing your thoughts! These videos are a favorite for me and I definitively take the time to watch them!
Absolutely wonderful and so helpful. Thank you for sharing about yourself with respect to having a Can I Help You expression. I’m the same way and hope to improve as well. Your honesty was very lovely and I wish you all the best. Looking forward to part two!
It’s been about 50 years since I read Little Women, I think I’ll order the audiobook. I have re-read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, as an adult, they’re so relaxing.
This was so pleasant! I sat in what is basically "my little corner" and drew at my art desk while listening to this video. I look forward to the second half - Little Women is a favorite of mine!
when I homeschooled our boys I learned that our environment sets the tone ... now I am a professional artist and I love helping my collectors surround themselves with inspiration and beauty
These are my favorite videos from you the ones from books I read your book Madame chic I really enjoyed it. I love books fiction classics ones like you mentioned and I love the lessons you share from each book. I really learned alot from how the Mediterranean countries in food how frugal minimalist lifestyle I live that way myself as an American born and raised my aunt lived in Europe for over 20 years. I will also check out your intermittent fasting videos have a good day ps I also liked the glow inside video you did
I love this because my daughter calls me Marmi and she’s 37! Her boyfriend asked her why she called her mother Marmi and she said because she’s an extraordinary Mommy.
I think that there are several wonderful parallels between Marmee and Ma (perhaps most notably, putting others before themselves)…Both are such powerful, quiet forces for good in the home. I loved their characters as a child, but now I truly and deeply admire them.
Thank you Jennifer. This was very enlightening and enjoyable as I was feeling a little down as my husband went away on a business trip and was staying at the Radisson blu while I stayed yet again at home. It made me realize that I can achieve a relaxing and tranquil space of my own and really appreciate what I have. I will re-listen to this and re-evaluate my values and blessings 🌹
Jennifer, this has nothing to do with the topic you are speaking on ( which I’m enjoying and appreciate). But, the colour of your blouse is so flattering on you.
How timely! I just started re-reading this book over the weekend and was making mental notes about how many examples are set in this book…housekeeping and motherly advice and how to work on your weaknesses. Love Little Women! Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
Thank you for this thoughtful reflection on homemaking! May I suggest that Marmee is more of a Saint then we may observe. Sainthood is achieved through overcoming our state of sin through sacrifice and acts of love. It is not being born with the perfect constitution or having a a meek personality necessarily. After Mother Teresa passed, we learned that she was depressed and unsure of her direction most of her life. I was quite shocked when I learned that about her. The pursuit of sainthood ( which really means joining our Lord in heaven after our earthly life concludes) is one for all of us. It means overcoming our weakness through the grace of God, rather than giving in to cynicism. I think Marmee was a Saint because she overcame her own weaknesses and loved her children and her husband, despite his shortcomings and lack of leadership at times. She remained grateful and loving in the face of great loss, suffering and disappointment. Mother Teresa once advised people to stop traveling the world to find people to serve and simply love and bloom where you are...this is exactly what Marmee did. Thank you for sharing this wonderful analysis with us- it brings literature to life in a new way and from a new perspective that never really occurred to me.
I agree with all of this. But also think Being a “saint” is not required to be a good mother. And further, each of the girls are exceptional despite being flawed in their own ways. I think those characteristics are what have allowed this story to endure through so many years. We can look at our own families and see others flaws and love them despite them.
@@Chelseyandfam Great point! -we must love others in spite of our flaws and the girls are exceptional which is why they continue to inspire generations of women ( and men really). I was just thinking from the Christian perspective on life. None of us can be Saints until we die, but that is the goal of every Christian- to join God in heaven as a Saint. It just somehow struck me that Marmee was really following the path that leads to Sainthood in spite of her flaws ( which we all have). I am so grateful for this community because we care about and engage in conversations like this. Motherhood, homemaking, the role of a wife, the role of women in society and the Christian life are often belittled in our culture today. In reality, all of these are integral to thriving families and ultimately to a thriving society that honors the human person. Thank you, Jennifer for sparking these wonderful discussions. I rarely comment, but I am often inspired by this community. 💕
Greetings from England, Jennifer! I want to thank you because I, too, can relate to the character in this book who does not like housework. Until I found your TH-cam channel and then read your books, I had a negative attitude about being a homemaker. I still can't cook - and I'm 60! But you have helped me gain a valuable attitude adjustment and now I hum and sing as I do dishes and clean. I still cannot cook but I will tackle my attitude and fear about that next. You have made a wonderful difference in my life and, having a grown son, I wish I would have realized the importance of being a homemaker and home leader when he was small. You are a treasure and a blessing, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Merry Christmas, Kathy
Jennifer from England, I feel the same as you about Jennifer, from. USA! Realizing I want to support her by not only subscribing, but maybe even joining her club in 2022.
Guess it’s time to read little women again! Thank you for sharing about being an introverted homemaker. I have 5 children ages 1-10 and I’m very introverted. We live in a 2 bedroom house that we are waiting to renovate and living on top of each other with no way for me to go have time to myself or have a place for myself. It’s so hard to interact all day. I’m very encouraged by Marmee!
Beautiful inspiring message as always, you are a breath of lovliness in this nasty world. Your lipstick today is incredible, I would love to know what it is.
I read the book as a child and have watched a few different movie versions. The production with Elizabeth Taylor was my favourite. You've encouraged me to read it as an adult. Thankyou again for all the time and effort you put into your channel. Hi from Australia xx
I love this story and intend to read it to my grand daughters next time I see them. If you are interested in dress history Abbey Cox does a review of the more recent film costumes - it doesn’t come off so well and the 1990’s version of Little Women is a much better and more accurate depiction of the story both aesthetically and narratively. thanks for the vid- always an interesting 10=15 minutes of my life when I pause to enjoy.
“How can I help you?”
My oldest was going through a trying moment and I asked him that….he burst into tears. Sometimes, a true caring interaction is all we need to get us through.
I love this

The "how can I help you look" is a look that I'm striving for. It doesn't mean martyrdom, it means service to others to please our Lord.
Oh my goodness! I struggle so much with the "can I help you face?!" I am both introverted and highly sensitive to auditory stimulation, so with three rambunctious boys under age 10 I am increasingly struggling to maintain the patience and peaceful look and voice. Yes, yes, yes! LOL
My mother always told me the best way to get your house clean is to have company.

Please do more videos like this, going through classic books
Great video and so different from everything on TH-cam! Thank you 😊

I want them to enjoy the storyline so I don't always interject the observations I have
How interesting your comment about the parallels between Little Women and The Secret Garden is. Well said!
Truly--this is my favorite series on your channel. Thank you so much!
I enjoy the music....I could listen to this all day!
Great video
These are such great points. I love the insight that we do need our own space untouched. We often feel guilty about wanting something that is just ours!
This is my favourite series from you!
Wonderful, wonderful! Thank you for this series! My dad bought me Little Women and Black Beauty when I was younger! I read them over and over. You have inspired me to read them again as an adult! Thank you! Xoxox
Awwwww what a lovely dad! :)
This is so nice to listen to and very honest. I think a lot of us who are moms have similar feelings. The book is great! Thank you for your channel.
Thank you Jennifer! I love these talks about books and homemaking. One of my favourite subjects on your channel! Greetings from Amsterdam
I read it after my daughter recommended it. I only wish we had read it together! It would make a great read aloud! Love this book!
I would love a book series from a parenting pov. That's a wonderful idea.
You reminded me how much I used to love this book! I'm going to re-read this. By the way, Jennifer, you look wonderful in that jewel green shade.
Great tips. I've personally been awareness and working on how my face looks at home, so this is a funny reminder!
I enjoy this, Jennifer. My 11-year-old daughter was listening too. We both love Little Women
Little women (part one and two, in Italy) is my favourite book since I was twelve. I read it every two years and every time I “discover” something new or new views… At January I am going to find all the points you talk about!
Wonderful!
Thank you for these delightful videos! I love going through these classics with you and hearing your thoughts! These videos are a favorite for me and I definitively take the time to watch them!
Oh how I love the story of Little Women...it's one of my all-time most favorite books! Thank you Jennifer for sharing those insights. 😊
This series and the 3 articles on dress are my favorite videos of yours, loved it!
This was so pleasant! I sat in what is basically "my little corner" and drew at my art desk while listening to this video. I look forward to the second half - Little Women is a favorite of mine!
Yes, very much enjoying this series! Thank you!
My favorite book and great reminders!
I love these videos that you give tips from books about homes and managing them hop you do more I want more books to Reed👏🏻😃✨🙏🏻🌷❤️
when I homeschooled our boys I learned that our environment sets the tone ... now I am a professional artist and I love helping my collectors surround themselves with inspiration and beauty
Your videos are so refreshing. Thank you! 🤗
I love your v-log. You have really encouraged me to be presentable and calm and cherish my home!
Yes, we absolutely need our own little space to be alone with your thoughts! ❤️
Lovely!!! Than you so much, looking forward to more!
I love this so much! I can't wait to watch part two!❤
Thank you for watching!
This was wonderful!! I would also love to see one from the Anne of Green Gables series
Jennifer, this is sheer genius. Excellent points, and so relatable. Looking forward to the next!
This was fun because we are reading Little Women for book club next month.
Thank you for these interesting observations!
Thank you, Kathy! Merry Christmas!
Jennifer from England, I feel the same as you about Jennifer, from. USA! Realizing I want to support her by not only subscribing, but maybe even joining her club in 2022.
Your dress color looks stunning on you. I kept being drawn to your eyes which were beautiful and looked like they were nearly the same color.
I love these videos I have all the others too & they help me more than I thought they would 😊 thank you Jennifer x
" breath of loveliness in this nasty world" ....so true.
I am learning so much from you. Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing @ #2 the introverts struggle. I struggle with needing peace yet I have extroverted kids as is their dad. 🤭😬😅
I absolutely LOVE these videos!! They are so unique and lovely! Thank you!
I love that some things, the fundamental things, never change.
Melissa 🎄
I really like these series. They really are very helpful.
