    LOVE THIS! And I have to add, it's not just pie-making and room decor that can help heal a broken or wounded heart...it's plain ol' housework. Doing dishes, dusting, laundry, sweeping and mopping floors...the hard work itself helps remind the body and mind that life goes on and that's a comfort, particularly in times of grief and loss. These are wonderful life lessons from Little Women and I'm so grateful you took the time to share them with us. Merry Christmas!

      Agreed ❤ Regular housework is what kept me tethered when going through a particularly long and difficult time. Something about working in spite of the tears was stabilizing and allowed me to grieve without fully succumbing to despair.

    Really enjoyed this video. When my children were home, whenever they were grumpy about housework, I would tell them “Never deny yourself the pleasure and satisfaction of a job well done”. It is so funny now that they use this exact phrase with their own kids.
    That saying can actually be used for ANY task that needs doing, whether at home, work or even just personal goals.

    Yes, in times of grief and stress I want to keep busy working. It's also my go to when others are grieving, what work do they need done right now. I'm not good at being the shoulder to cry on, but need a meal? Need laundry done? Need a sitter? Need a ride? Put me to work!

    I shared the home making tips with my grown daughter from your last video. It just so happened that she bought the book Little Women the day before at a thrift store. She loved listening to what I learned from your part one video as she has four young children. She couldn't wait to start reading Little Women. Being cheerful, joyful, greatful and helpful really does make a happy home. Your series really are inspiring, thank you for this. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

    Hi Jennifer! Are you familiar with the Advent/Christmas hymn "People Look East"? We sing it in our church every year. It was written by Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965) in 1928. (She also wrote "Morning Has Broken".) The first verse says "Make your home fair AS YOU ARE ABLE. Trim the hearth and set the table." Yes, do what you can with what you have; it's the love that counts. :)

    This was really great! It's such a pertinent topic. I loved what you said about work helping us through hard times. It reminds me of a line from the movie Out of Africa where Meryl Streep's character is dealing with layers of emotional stress and she begs the workers on her coffee plantation to give her work to do along side them- to literally relieve her mind. Great topic!

    Hi Jennifer, I am enjoying your take aways from each classic book. The items left behind from the one daughter sparked a memory for me: my brother was in charge of teaching me on Saturday afternoons how to detail the family car so it was spotless for Sunday. My parents did not want our best clothes to brush up against a dirty car and be spoiled. My brother went on to have his own painting business and hired me to detail clean before he painted. Sadly, my brother passed away a week before he was to paint our home we were building. I think of him often as I see our painted walls these 24 years and know he had his workers do our home gratuit.
    Character building chores for our children are not a burden but building block for life.
    Thanks again and all the best, Julie 🌷

    I have to smile when you do these videos because so many of the principles you glean from these books are Scriptural---Proverbs 21:5 Good planning and hard work leads to prosperity; 12:14 hard work brings rewards; Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine---and we must not forget about the ants and learn from their ways in Proverbs 6! I know you love to quote that verse.

    Loved these two videos. The tip about when you get behind everything else will also be a mess I totally agree with. I find that with homeschooling especially. Part of our day needs to be dedicated to keeping the house up. That includes just keeping things clean and tidy but also laundry, dishes, making wonderful meals etc. I view it all together instead of trying to compartmentalizing it all.

    I am on day 6 of isolating with covid.
    When I watched Part 1, I was reminded of the book ‘What Katy Did’ , in which the convalescent Katy was boosted by having a wash, changing on to clean clothes and freshening her room. It certainly worked for me too.

    Thank you for gleaning these helpful tips for us, Jennifer! What you said about family remembering scents of cleaning products and muffins, etc. is so true. It seems there is at least one child in a family that has a more acute sense of smell. One of our 7 year old granddaughters stated one day, "It smells like Grams' house." Her mother, our daughter, being dissatisfied with laundry soaps she had tried began using what she was raised with, the product I use. They all agreed that it was the laundry soap that reminded them of Grams' house. I love the portion of this video about the happiest kingdom being home!

    I loved this! I think these types of videos are my favorites of yours. Girl’s classic novels are my favorite books, having shared them with my girls, this is such a fun revisit! My youngest daughter is pregnant for the second time and told me just today that she is craving my homemade bread and that “for some reason” she keeps thinking of the smell of the homemade cleaners, in which I used Dr Bronner’s Peppermint soap. Thank you for commenting on the importance of those simple memories.
    And I can’t wait for the Anne videos! She is an absolute favorite memory of when my girls were young. I actually used her unit study with my oldest in our homeschooling. …so much fun!

    Life as a full time working woman is really interesting. Not what i wanted as a child, planned to have lots of kids and work at home. I find myself feeling so trapped to that stupid laptop and constant spreadsheets. All i want to do is sweep the floor and clean the counter. Wash the laundry and vacuum the floors clean. There is so much satisfaction making something gross and dirty and chaotic into something clean, shiny, and orderly. It requires thinking, but a completely different kind of thinking that my spreadsheet brain is crying out for. I know many women would trade housework for spreadsheets every single day of the week. But boy, it's not me.

      I wanted to reply. You may discover that you have an opportunity to telework from home which is my compromise. I’m able to utilize my breaks and do the tasks that I love more so technically than my data entry. I wish you well and creating your dream life that your heart desires.

    • @mschenandlerbong8539

      Lady Kathryn Perry The sad thing is, i do work from home. Yes, i can clean a bit on my breaks. But it's like I'm sitting there chained to my laptop while I'm looking around at things i would rather be doing. Or that really need my attention. Watching your home suffer while you are sitting in it is really annoying. I do constantly work on my perspective and attitude about it. I try to lean into gratitude for the many blessings associated with my situation (there are many). But i so have the urge to be released from staring at screens and numbers all day long. It feels like a waste of my life and it's terrible for my body and physical health. I just want to move and work.

      I came up on the beginning of women's lib. I wanted to be a career woman and have been doing it ever since. But a part of me always envied--and still do-- stay at home women. I'm appreciative of having a job, but each morning is a chore to go to the office. I just want to be a housewife. Who knew.... And yes, I know it is probably not all it's cracked up to be, but I still wish.........

    • @mschenandlerbong8539
      @mschenandlerbong8539 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cjay I would be willing to bet 90% of the women in my office feel the same. We got sold a career ideal when in reality it's just a job. And the trade off for losing time at home and building families cannot be recovered by the time you figure it out. I hope our future generations of daughters are taught better. If you are pulled to a certain calling in life, no matter what it is, get it. And yes that will always include mothering and homemaking in the options :)

    • @cjay233
      @cjay233 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mschenandlerbong8539 Agreed. My office same. When pandemic hit, a lot of mothers found out it was cheaper to stay home--and wanted to--and keep their own children w/ unemployment rather than pay daycare.

    Merry Christmas, Jennifer🌲 This Christmas I got my daughter My Little House Crafts Book and it got me poking around for similar books online. Did you know there is The Little Women Treasury?? I am so excited! It made me think of you and this video and I wanted to share that with you. Have a lovely holiday!

    My husband knows there is something wrong with my when I start cooking like it’s thanksgiving 😂. I also love to clean out my closet, skincare & makeup when I’m anxious/stressed, I think it gives me a sense of control when life is out of my control.

    Appreciate your videos SO much 🤗 Lost over a year due to ill health and many tasks fell behind! Feel it’s up to me regarding my mindset: is this my sanctuary or my prison?! I get to choose 👍 What a special society we have here! It offers both comfort and hope! “Make the most of what we have!” Wishing all the Happiest December! 🎄🌟🎅🏼

    This was great! There was one point I wish I could shout from the roof tops. The one about not trying to do it all on your own. You see, somehow, I was not successful in teaching my children the importance of teamwork as a family.
    One small correction: Beth was the third born, not the youngest. Finally, I have been studying the stack of books over your left shoulder, trying to figure out what the one on top is. It makes me think of the cover of The Little Women Devotional by Rachel Dodge. Have you heard of it and her other literary based devotionals? ♥ ~ Heather ~

    Hello Jennifer, I remember seeing the basin with built-in washboard for hand washing delicate laundry in one of your videos. Would you be so kind to please let me know the brand and style/model name/number? Thank you.

    An off the subject question. I see you have the book "A Vintage Christmas" on the table next to you. I'm looking for that book. Do you recall where you bought it? Thank you. Little Women is one of my favorites!
