Revisiting this because I've been thinking recently, about a Father's contribution to our Homes. They do the heavy lifting & the manly tasks. Missing our Dad & thankful for the men in our Lives. 🙏for your Dad...

I have my grandmother's copy of Anne of Green Gables from 1915. She was raised on a farm in Prince Edward Island, a relatively short drive from here. She taught in a one-room school in the 1920's. She and her elder sister were both working at the time and had four younger siblings. One day their father decided he wanted to buy his first car. Since he couldn't afford it himself, he told the girls that each of them would pay half. They were not pleased as one would imagine, but they obeyed. One day, when her father wasn't home, my grandmother decided she would learn to drive that car. Her sister said something to the effect of, "But Catherine! What if Papa catches you?!" and when he did he had no defense. Not many women could drive at the time, and because she could, she went on to work for the Red Cross, traveling all around the Maritime provinces, and that is how she met my grandfather. It's a Romans 8:28 type of story that I absolutely love.

Jennifer, I have 2 master's degrees in children's literature, and I congratulate you on finding a new topic of discussion in children's lit, one that I never heard addressed in graduate classes, with regard to the Anne series, or actually, any such literature. One thing I would add to your analysis is a salient reason for such adherence to homemaking. Those were days of sustainability living. Clothing and household articles were made to last, sometimes for generations. Things took time to make and to save for. They were not easily replaceable. They had value from a physical and sentimental value. (Such as the pearls Anne received from Matthew Cuthbert).

I've always thought a part of Marilla taking the housekeeping so far is because she didn't have anyone but Matthew - and she was working through her emotions of that as she accepted Anne into her heart. I love the books.

When I was a teen, and later as a new bride, I would listen to "Anne of Green Gables", "Anne of Avonlea", and "Anne of the Island" on audio tape while I did chores. So good to see someone do a video on this! As a homeschooler, I love classic literature as well, but AOGG is my absolute favorite and I actually live in Prince Edward Island. I have often thought about Lucy's examples of good housekeeping in her works. Yes, Anne was overly imaginative and flighty as a girl but she still grew up to be a wonderfully kind mother, and good homemaker.

Love this, Jen. Another book to read again. I love “work done first” and play. When I was a stay at home mother, I would plan my day every day with the goal to be done with cleaning by noon, so I could spend time with my children with late afternoons used for sewing and baking toward the end of the daytime before dinner time. Tasting before the food is served, is great advice. As a young mother many years ago, a good friend of my husband’s came to visit us. I made a nice dinner with an apple cake for dessert. I completely forgot to add sugar to the cake! What a surprise and embarrassing moment when the taking the first bite. A whole new meaning to a meal never forgotten. Thank you for this series. Great content. I have 5 granddaughters and this has given me the idea to buy them each their own Ann of Green Gables book for Christmas next year.

I loved the "secret" -Look on the bright side- "there's more scope for the imagination". I live in a very rural area with a dog, cat and rancher husband going in and out of the house. Dust from the wood stove and air. The furniture is covered with blankets to keep them clean. I sit in my chair in the morning and imagine what it would be like with nicer furniture and a pretty rug. Going to town is a 40 minute drive but we sight -see all the way and appreciate the beauty God has given us. I read the book when I was about 13. I think I need to read it again. I'm looking forward to the next video.

    Good afternoon Jennifer.
I’m in the U.K. and have finally finished reading ‘Anne of Green Gables’.
It’s not that it took me long to read, but I borrowed it via my library who had to send for it from another library branch. Furthermore, it wasn’t easy as it was very much in demand; and others were waiting for it after me….I wonder if all the others are following your good self?
I found it a fascinating book; even though I have seen the TV series with my eldest daughter when she was 11 years old…she will soon be 49. Bless her.
I also very much appreciate you picking out the ‘home tips’ that are still relevant to this day. In fact, I mentioned your findings to the librarian and her response was…”Now that’s a lady who actually reads a book”. Very well done to you from the U.K.
As I wait for the follow on books to arrive, I am now reading ‘Postcards from the Past’ by Marcia Willett. A story about a ‘Brother and Sister’ who are living a quiet life in Cornwall, when they start receiving postcards from someone in their past….thus the mystery starts… Why after all these years!?
Thank you Jennifer, you have certainly re triggered my interest in reading and by visiting my library, I am also making new friends.

Enjoyed this - and it made me even more eager to read Anne of Green Gables to my daughters! :) Your last point struck me particularly, because we recently moved and I've noticed that I have a "consciousness" of the area around our home, which affects how I feel inside our home. Sometimes I feel as if I should be able to shut out my perception of the neighborhood/town around me and focus only on the atmosphere inside our home, but your reading about Anne's consciousness of what was outside her home and how it affected the overall way she felt about "home" made me realize that my current feelings are completely valid. ;)

I just loved this! I re-read Anne of Green Gables last year and I was reminded of how humorous it was! And as you said, it does have numerous lovely descriptions of the house or Anne’s room or the flora and fauna of the countryside. Such a great book. I love how you relate it to home making today.

I told my son the story of the linament cake the other day. My story's conclusion was "go ahead and lick your fingers when you get cake batter on them," after all, as Julia Child says, "you're the only one in the kitchen!" As fans of _Anne of Green Gables_ may recall, Anne had a cold and couldn't smell the linamemnt, but she'd have tasted it!
I love this series. I remember every book you've featured so far, and it's been great!

I remember that when I first read Anne of Green Gables, what struck me concerning homemaking was learning to cook things without a recipe, or rather, having the recipes memorized for all the things you might cook often.

I absolutely love your book series! It's amazing what tips you find and I have found a new appreciation for books that have been my absolute favorites for years. It's so lovely to be able to look at these books from a new perspective. My favorite homemaking secret was the same as yours, Home is a consciousness. It's always been one of my favorite parts of the book!

I loved the young actress who played Anne. Murilla’s kitchen was gorgeous in the movie.

I told a Dutch friend how much I admire Dutch homemaking, I’m part Dutch myself (my grandfather was from the North Polder region). She said they get carried away, though, for example, they wash every window daily. I’m lucky if I get the exteriors of mine washed annually (I’m not allowed to use ladder, and don’t think I could if I would).
