    I love this camera. I bought it used in 2022 and shot a feature doc that was nationally distributed by PBS (television and Amazon). Shot the whole thing in 8-bit. I agree that it has to be the best 8-bit of all time.

    Bought my C200 this summer in mint condition for 1100 USD, picked up a Sigma 18-35 for another 400. I feel this is the end game camera for me, can't imagine wanting anything more. 4K, 12bit raw, insanely ergonomic, the screen tilts up and has a mirror function so that even a huge teleprompter doesn't obstruct it. Apple M chips crunch the raw files without problem. I just don't see anything even close on the horizon without spending multiples of this amount. It has a zen feeling too that's hard to explain, I just want to film with it, the buttons, the inputs, the handle, the easy to understand menu (coming after multiple Sony mirrorless...). I am beyond happy to have found this camera. Before I was looking at C100 Mk2s which sometimes also go for this price, but I held out to have that 4K futureproof, now I'm done searching.

    As a long time C200 user: black balance semi-frequently, and lower the iso in low light situations. Those two things can help with tremendously with noise.
    I also highly recommend Juan Melara’s C-Log 2 to Alexa power grade, and setting your resolve Raw settings to read canon raw files as C-Log 2 and cinema gamut by default and then saving that to be your default setting.

  • @theyoungsphoto

    I agree with ALL of this! Such a beast for the LOW price you can find them for. My biggest hang up used to be the MASSIVE file sizes when shooting RAW, but with media storage being so cheap these days, this is an AMAZING choice for anyone wanting to break into the world of cinema cameras!

    I think the c200 was a solid camera, but where canon nailed the market was and is the c70. Aside from its connection shortfalls, the c70 is the most versatile cinema camera in canon’s line up for good reason. Looking forward to seeing what the c400 does, but of course that’s in a much higher price bracket vs the used 200 market.

    Validating my choice to purchase 2 Canon C200's in the past month, virtually replacing my C300 Mii and C100 Mii. Easy to find EC copies. Like new, really. And the Mac M2 chips handle the RAW files with ease. It was a camera ahead of its time in file size and price. Now at $1500-2000, with more powerful computers, it's a steal. Been following your journey to this camera. Thanks for your honesty and for having a little fun along the way.

    I have 2 of these cameras that I use for work in a live-to-tape multicam studio setting and that I've been using for about 5 years. I absolutely love them. I did shoot once in 8-bit before I got a dummy cfast to 1TB ssd adaptor - and it was ok IMO - but the raw light is fantastic. Full transparency, I would NOT have bought them had it not been for the cfast dummy adaptor to ssd at a fraction of the cost vs the cfast cards which were (and are) in the stoopid zone of cost... internal 10bit would have been nice, but Canon would have most certainly cannibalized (canonbalized?) sales of the c300ii.
    Anyway, I only shoot in raw and have a large NAS for storage, although I do shoot the proxy 8bit mp4's that I'll edit with before relinking to the raw footage for grading and render.
    Bottom line is that I'll be using this camera for years to come and I'm ignoring all the new cameras with new bells & whistles - it's the forever black hole all us gear nuts always and inevitably keep falling into, and they'll always be something better.
    Otherwise, great review -

    FS7 is the way to go - shooting internal 10bit Slog 3 you get beautiful colors out of it. only downside is the missing autofocus (if you need it)

    • @sammorganmoore
      @sammorganmoore 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I own both c200 and fs7. The fs7 has no af and a terrible screen. So the only way for focus is to buy a 7in monitior.. and power it.. you end up with a monster rig.. which can be a problem. C200 AF or MF green box means you can use the little screen and keep the build small. Also raw is just gets what fs7 misses.

    • @noBfilm
      @noBfilm 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      c200 got a good working autofocus you can use while filming. for everything else, FS7 is way better. canon was so spoiled about their C300 / C100 sells, so they crippled the cam. if canon added a 10bit internal recording, the C200 would be the one-trick-pony everyone was still using until this day, but canon wanted it not so close to the C300. so they fucked it up and everyone went to Sony / Blackmagic / fuji

      I did a standard picture profile test on my channel of the FS7 paired with Canon FD SSC glass. I shoot a lot of talking head corporate work and my cam op also has the FS7. It’s just easy to shoot two cam setup, use very little storage and get really soft skin tones and character from the FD glass.

    The Sony FS5 is an interesting alternative to this camera if you cared about having a codec in between 8 bit and 12 bit with reasonable file sizes. The only downside is that the internal 10 bit is only HD.

    • @noBfilm
      @noBfilm 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yea, that makes the FS5 useless - because it produces ugly skin tones. same like the FS7 in 8bit - but with the FS7 you can record 10bit Slog3 and get nice colors in post. would not recommend a FS5 today

    I've had the C200 for four years now. Works perfectly for my jobs - there is no reason to switch it. At first I was shocked of how much noise there was but you just have to over expose a bit and it's not a problem. The C200 has the most pleasing image of all the cameras I've used. Much better than RED for example.
    It's cheap, reliable and the image is just reeeeally good. Soft, filmlike and full of emotion. :DD

On the topic of 10bit, initially Canon didnt give us 10 bit because they wanted to protect sales of the c300s and above. At the time it made sense but many many years later it didnt. Many models had come and gone but Canon refused to give us that 10 bit update for c200. Even this month they released an update for the c500 mk2 giving it features that at the time many said was protecting the c70. So yeah, Canon life.
