Love the honesty. You call balls and strikes, harp when necessary but also recognize when something might work for someone else. You videos never feel like a commercial for something which already puts you way ahead of must other filmmaking youtiubes who just focus on gear they love or those who are paying them. kudos for admitting, "that's just me though, I know there's some out there that would look at this thing like the holy grail of lenses, nd if that's you, go for it. If you buy this lens and shoot something really cool with it, then you're already doing more filmmaking than someone like me who's just sitting here complaining about it.". Respect. Keep it up.
The composite plastic holds up pretty well over time, keeps the camera lightweight enough to easily work with common gimbal systems, and the screen isn't an issue once you're aware of it. As an owner operator of a c70 for several years now, I wouldn't put the build quality as a mark against it unless you're planning on renting it out. Also, the digital stabilization is fine in the right situations - too often people turn it on forget about it leading to bad pulsing issues in the your footage, but if you're using it correctly, it can be the difference between a usable shot, and one that you just have to pray post will be able to fix. Not knocking your review, but I was one that went for years just leaving it off for safety, and recently came back to it for more handheld work realizing what I've been leaving on the table - could have saved me a lot of trouble. And it's worth noting that when paired with Canon's IS lenses like their RF line, the end result is actually pretty close to the physical IBIS systems in a lot of other cameras - but RF costs are what they are so... Canon actually kept this in the newer c400 as well, because as a digital stabilization system you can turn it off. Any camera using a physical IBIS will always have that floating design to work through, which can cause issues with percision in certain situations. Nice review, auto focus in practice is its biggest weakpoint, especially when there's multiple subjects in frame. Love the camera, and love the IQ you can get it out if with vintage or basically any cine glass, the mk2 will most likely stay s35 since the c400 is RF FF, Canon has a habit of announcing the more expensive model first then quickly following up with more affordable ones, with the c400 due in September, I wouldn't be surprised to see a c70 mk2 announced this year, but if not it's probably not long off.
I totally agree about the build quality not all composite materials are equal, and canon does indeed has really HQ materials. My cameras and lenses really went through some rough conditions and everything managed to survive without a noticeable damage. I do agree with the Jake and his video that the wheel and the display hinge could be done better, also the mounting point for handle tends to come loose. But when I talk with my rental their favourite cameras are canons cause they just work....

Great review! Quick tip: your first CST that goes from log -> log: it's better to disable tone mapping. With tone mapping on the transformation isn't accurate.
i've owned the c70 since day one and i'm selling it now because i use my S5 II and IIX more on jobs... but it pains me to see it go. it's been a wonderful workhorse and has such an insane image quality
Great video dude! The C70 is definitely a GREAT camera (as I've told you repeatedly hahaha). The build quality, and in particular the screen, is my single biggest complaint about the camera. Looking forward to what they might do with a Mark II version!
Honestly, I have seen so many videos where I thought, wow, the image is wonderful, just to find out it was shot with the C70. As I am more into photography I went with the R5, but the C70 is just a dream video camera.
I don't get what people mean when they say they don't like the build quality. Because I think this is build like a tank, except for the flippy screen. Everything feels very solidly put together. All the buttons feel good, nothing is rattling. The battery gives a good click when you insert if, giving confidence. Power switch as well. Plastics are also solid, feel rather thick and don't give way when pushed. The hand grip is solid. I don't know what you mean. Other than the screen which is super flimsy. But maybe it need's only one part to make the whole feel bad?

I wonder if your perception of the 24-105 is because you’re not using it on a full frame sensor! I haven’t used it but it seems like the ultimate utilitarian tool for weddings.
Probably for a lot of applications but for run and gun rough dock style it can't beat older c style bodies. That c400 looks great too! (Hopefully it says strong and robust as the past models) I had to return my c70s because the screens kept getting destroyed.
I don’t get the complaint of crippling. While the C70 isn’t something related to crippling, it seems that people want there to be no restrictions on less expensive cameras. They have to bring the price down somehow.

But when other brands have shortcomings you never hear them say it's "crippled". For example: when the EOS R came out, everyone said it was crippled because it had a crop in 4k. THREE YEARS later the Sony a7iv comes out with a crop in 4k 60, but somehow there was no mention of the camera being crippled smh.
For an owner operator who would take care of their gear, I can see this being a a truthful statement but when it comes to a rental product, the C70 becomes a janky toy that feels like it's about to fall apart. I've had to rent C70's quite a bit and every time it's like about to just spontaneously combust. They would have record errors and ultimately I had to urge a client to stop using it because we lost an entire card in an instant. So if you take care of your things and use it with the utmost respect and dignity, sure. But it's not a tangible rental solution and I would urge anyone considering to rent it to RUN FAR AWAY.
are you sure that was not an issue with the cards? My rental house love c70, the only thing they dont like is the display and its hinge. But after first service canon did improve it a lot. They never reported any other problems with it.
I’ve rented from multiple different vendors with consistent issues across the board, including the record errors. So unless all cards are bad, it seems like a software / hardware bug. But I agree the hinge is one of the worst points of potential physical failure. It always feels like it’s about to bend a bit too far and snap off, and they have varying degrees of tolerance so the more used it is the less the hinge works as intended. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a canon fan, my first DSLR pre video was a the rebel, I was in the trenches with the 7D and 5D, own a C100 Mk2 and a C200 and EOS R. I have loved the C300 and even the C700 for its large quirks. But the C70 feels like a toy comparatively and I have never gotten any rental of that camera to live up to the work horse value of the others. Especially after being a Beta tester for RED with the Komodo back in 2020, I’d take a preproduction model Komodo over the C70 (and i did move the job I rented C70s for to 3 Komodo’s).
@@jgermain453interesting I own c70 for year and a half, have many friends that use it, red bull media house uses it a lot because of its reliability and this is first time I’ve heard about any issues except the hinge and the top handle mount. Wonder is it up to the series of the model since I’m based in Europe but it seams those 20 cameras I’m aware of ended up being the lucky bunch 😅
Agreed it’s not too bad apart for the screen hinge. Used mine for 3 years. I don’t really baby my gear. The mini XLR ports you need to be careful with, when cables are plugged in. Broke one once by accident.
This camera was in my radar until I hold it in the shop. Build quality feels very cheap and I might have to baby it. Canon's plastic isn't on par with the like of Sony and Nikon.
A lot of guys could vastly improve their image quality, by investing $2.50 towards a pack of Walmart safety razors, instead of another $2,500 into a yet another 4K camera system.

The lack of EVF is pretty devastating to me. Addon EVF's screw up the ergonomics. The C100 mk2-style body better IMO.

Better DR if you push but more noise at high iso and probably a bit softer as it isnt a 6k down sample
