  • If you're in the market for a family car there's a good chance that on your shortlist is the Volkswagen Golf. In this CarGurus used car review Chris Knapman takes a look at how the sixth generation of Golf stacks up as a used buy.
    Written review:
    www.cargurus.co.uk/research/V...
    Pros
Sensibly and thoughtfully designed inside and out
Good fun to drive - especially GTI
    Decent long-distance refinement
    Cons
A bit of a conservative choice
    Reliability concerns, especially DSG gearboxes
Not the most practical car in its class
    The CarGurus verdict
Realistically, any serious faults with a mk6 Golf should already have been sorted out by now, either under warranty or at the previous owner’s expense. But check the service records and other invoices diligently to make sure remedial work has taken place, especially on cars fitted with the DSG automatic gearbox.
Conservative choice though it may be, a mainstream Golf represents mid-level motoring at its refined and well-executed best. And while most of the range will maintain your pulse rate at an unremarkable level, the GTI and R versions are held in high regard by thrill-seeking sports car aficionados.

Greetings from South Africa. The Golf 6 is one of my favourite Golf generations, especially with the 1.6l petrol engine. I think the Golf 4, 5 and 6 are the best of the modern golfs.

I have a 2012 Golf, bought new, in the entry-level American trim with a 2.5-liter inline five. My one big problem with the car was a constant stalling at stoplights that took seventeen tries for my dealer to fix. The DSG has never been a problem for me because I get my oil changed every year and I drive much less than 14,000 miles annually.

Did the base trim have DSG? "DSG" refers to the dual clutch automatic, I believe the base trim had a torque converter automatic.

I bought a 1.6TDI back 2016, great MPG and only £30 road tax. Sure it’s not the fastest thing but there’s plenty of low end grunt for overtaking and it’s comfortable for driving around town. Yes the clutch did start to go around 60-70k (I bought it used with 56k) but due to circumstances didn’t get it changed until 114k, so I managed to get it to last that long. I’ve had it 5 years now but it’ll have to go as it’s not ULEZ compliant, if it wasn’t for that I’d probably would keep it.

I've heard that there are loads of problems with the Golf VI to 2012, that were barely touched on in this video - so it's probably not the video you would make your decisions on if you're looking to purchase one second hand

My '07 Rabbit (Mk V Golf in the US market) has a trunk leak, but it hasn't caused any corrosion issues, VW has exceptionally good rustproofing, it is a minor annoyance, and sometimes I have to bilge pump out the rear tire well after a particularly heavy rain...
