  • UPDATE: since the publication of this video, I've updated my method of aligning the flag onto the grid. Take a look at this video for just that part.
    What I do, is copy two shorts stripes and place them on above stripe #2 and below stripe #12. This allows for me to then resize and align the flag ensuring i account for stripes #1 and #13. Much easier to just watch it but just wanted to add some text on this too.

    Hey Everyone,
    In this video I share with you how to carve an American Flag using Carbide Create. I'll be using my Shaepeoko but this can be replicated on any cnc.
    The American Flag is a very popular cnc job and the Shapeoko makes easy work of it. The flag is also a stepping stone to more complicated and custom designs!
    Hope this helps!

      It’s just practice man. Keep at it. Once you find your niche products, you’ll keep doing it over and over and over. so it’s just rinse and repeat.

    I am wondering how you put your flags together? Do you glue your stripes together and have 3 strips on the back to hold them together?
    If you have strips on the back when setting up your tool paths do you take into account the extra height of material from the strips on the back or doesn’t it matter?
    Thank you for your feedback.

      Hey Eric,
      This example is using a single piece flag. I typically use edge glued panels from Lowe’s but in this video I used plywood.
      When I carve a full flag, including stripes, it will be a single piece flag.
      When I make a flag with 13 individual strips I will only carve the union on my cnc. I like to use 4 strips in the back.
      To answer you specific question, no you would not have to account for the extra height of the back strips as extra material because you still need to set you z-zero at the top of your flag. You tell the program where the top is regardless whether it’s on the back strips or not. The cnc will carve according to the settings you put in carbide create, which would be 3/4” thick material.
      Hope that helps!

    Thank you for the video. I do have a question our stars are cutting very small even though we are doing everything you are doing. Any advice.

      When I get inconsistent stars, including small stars, it’s because my material is not flat.
      So I would check that the material is flat. Simply press down on your material to see if you have any give in the material.
      Also, it would be good to double check your stars. Make sure they’re proportional to the rest of the flag. It is unlikely That they’re not proportional, but it’s good to check everything.
      Lastly, make sure you’re carving stars to max depth (carbide create) or the thickness of your material (other programs).
      Also make sure to reset your z-zero where your union is to account for a difference in height from where you originally set your z-zero.
      Most the time, when I get these issues it comes down to the material flatness, so if everything else is right, make sure it’s flat. Try a practice piece by using brad nails to really flatten the board and see if you have that issue. That may confirm whether it was the material.
      Long response, but wanted to make it thorough.

    Excellent video! Just getting started with a CNC. I got one question maybe you know - how / can Carbide Create do "tiling"? Lets say I want to do a 37"x19" flag but my Y travel is only 30 inches. Somehow I need to push the material thru another 7 inches and continue but how do I do that *and* keep all the remaining 7 inches of stripes aligned with the first 30 inches?

      Welcome to the CNC world.
      You’ll have fun!
      As far as tiling goes I got you covered. I have two tiling videos. Check this one out.

    How would you go about painting the stripes white if you didn't want them the wood color?

    Thank you for the great video. do you use a bit setter when you run the advance V-cut. or will the new version of CC let you manually change the bit? Again thanks

      Thanks Ricardo! I appreciate it!
      I run the bit setter when using the advanced v-carve.
      I don’t think they’ve changed that in the latest CC version. To be honest I always have it on unless doing a surfacing job.

    So how long did the flag take total sir?

    • @aetimberpine
      @aetimberpine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Steve,
      This one was about 30 minutes because it was a small flag. I don’t remember the exact times. You can see the toolpaths we’re about 7minutes each.
      The painting, staining and drying slows you down a bit. But it all depends on how large the flag is.

    In the simulation I am only able to get the stars to look like a bunch of stars. It's not showing anything that looks like stars. I'm guessing this will not produce the right engraving. Suggestions?

    • @aetimberpine
      @aetimberpine  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would start over, sometimes it’s just best to refresh not only the toolpaths but also you. Step away and then Make sure you’re groups are correct.
      Stars should be one group and the other group are the stripes.
      Make sure you’re using a vbit with a vcarve toolpath on those stars.
      Advanced vcarve on the stripes.

      Thank you. I did start over and took another look at your process. It produced the same results when I was looking at the tool path. But I noticed you had “tool path” and “show Rapids” unchecked. When I did the same and only looked at the “show simulation”, it was showing stars as I would expect, so I went ahead and sent it to my machine and it engraved correctly. Thanks for your response!

    I just watched your video on carving the flag. If what i saw was correct when you set the max depth of the stars it was.75 is that correct? How does that work if I am carving in 3/4 material?
    Thank you for your insight.

    • @aetimberpine
      @aetimberpine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Eric. That’s a very good question.
      Take a look at my TH-cam post. I just shared an image that helped me understand why max depth is chosen. It allows the program to determine the correct depth to allow for the blades of the vbit touch the two ends of the vector you’re carving. (The image clarifies it better)
